Lumberjanes #9

Leñadoras: Fuera Bromas

Rate this book

A volume that starts off on whether Diana (being an Greek immortal!) gets to remain a Zodiac Lumberjane quickly descends into pure fun, comedy and friendship building as the series somehow becomes focused on a roller derby! 7.5 out of 12 :) Originally this was called... Might As Wheel!

Oh Hedy Lamarr... Hollywood legend... and inventor!

Lumberjanes plus Roller Derby equals perfection! This was awesome. It was bound to happen and it finally did happen. The Lumberjanes have to win back a tree house that the yeti's lost to the sasquatches when they went grocery shopping. The stakes are roller derby- winner take all. It's pretty awesome. It's also a very lumberjaney type Roller Derby too.

The characters are drawn a lot differently and I didn't like that. Rosie really looks different. She got a whole lot thinner. One thing I do love is that it was a heat wave and everyone was melting from the heat. Then they got involved with Roller derby and not a drop of sweat was given off over all the exertion. Funny.

Ripley was awesome, their roller derby names were awesome and Jen was pretty awesome as the ref. The story felt short and sweet, but it was epic. It was the antidote I needed at this moment. I do wonder if this will go on forever, or if this will eventually have an end to it's run. This is another one that would make a fun and campy TV series. There is plenty to go off of.

I always say it, Lumberjanes is a bit up and down for me, it’s a rollercoaster series. This particular volume… wasn’t one of the better ones.
As always, I loved the girls, and I love the addition of Barney too, but having an already established relationship with the characters (as we are on volume 9 now) doesn’t excuse a thoroughly lacking plot. I felt like there was no substance to this volume at all, and was mightily disappointed with it. There was no action, no mystery, nothing to solve… it was just lacking.
Of course I will continue with the series, I am invested so will get the next volume, I just hope it’s better than this one… as I said, it’s up and down. 2* simply for the cool girl gang though, that I continue to love.

I'm confused.. do have a roller derby league or not?! Because I wouldn't mind this comic turning into a sports manga. Am I the only one that thought so?

The book kicks off with a one shot: is Diane up to her old tricks? Nice to occasionally see a story focusing on characters other than the Roanokes.

Then we’re on to our main story. The yetis are kicked out of their treehouse by a pack of sasquatches, so the Roanokes come to the rescue by challenging them to a roller derby match. Honestly, that sentence really does make perfect sense, no matter what you may think. I am not off my meds! Put that straitjacket down …

This far into the series, Lumberjanes is running like a well-oiled machine. It could probably keep going indefinitely, especially if they maintain this high level of quality. It's not building to a climax because it's not the sort of series that has a definite endpoint. It will either eventually run out of steam, or become a beloved institution like Archie or something.

Continuing indefinitely isn't a bad thing, but it does make reviewing individual volumes difficult. Eventually one runs out of variations on, “This series rocks!”, “Yay, Ripley!”, “I wish scouting had been this cool when I was younger,” and the like.

It's a pleasing blend of fantasy, comedy, adventure, and action that shows no signs of slowing down, and it is Highly recommended!

This was so good!! I loved that the Yetis were back and I loved the rep!

Barney is also one of my favourite characters, though they didn't get too much action in the later issues, I loved the beginning with Barney <3

4 stars!

Not my absolute favourite lumberjanes volume but definitely still a very fun and enjoyable read!

The lumberjanes always warm my heart with all their incredible friendship bonds and their wild adventures.

I feel like I myself am also part of the lumberjanes by now and can’t wait to see what adventure I get myself into next with my wonderful lumberjanes friends!

The Lumberjanes are back at it and some old friends, the Yetis, have come back to join them. This time though the Lumberjanes are in a high stakes race, roller derby style.

This is still an adorable series, that is a fun, quick read. Definitely still enjoying the series and it is a nice break from all of the dark and gritty stories out there.

This has the feel of classic Lumberjanes. Crisp storytelling, full of heart and hijinks with a concise ending.

I'm so sad because I really did not enjoy this very much. I'll probably give the next one a chance, but if that one doesn't step up, I may be done with the series.

In Volume #9 we have the Lumberjanes solving one mystery of the melting ice-cream as they learn that someone is stealing the camp's power supply. The girls travel along and find Yetis and Sasquatches. The yetis have been kicked out of their treehouse by the Sasquatches. Mal finds an old roller rink and decides to set up a competition for the Yeti's to get their house back. The Roanoke cabin aka the Lumberjanes will challenge the Sasquatches to a game of roller derby.
Meanwhile, during this book, Jo is off in her little world as she has received a letter asking her to come to a Science camp and though this could change her life forever, it would mean leaving all her friends behind which she could never do. The other thing that happens in this book is that the Zodiac cabin is complete with Diane and Barney becoming more accepted of the Lumberjanes camp. I did enjoy this book but felt it had lacked a bit of the usual Lumberjane mischief and mayhem. Stay tuned for Volume #10 to come on The Phantom Paragrapher.

Reading new Lumberjanes feels more like rereading the series. Even this book's story is a bit better than the previous one, the schema is still the same. And the subtle (not all the time, though) LGBT+ propaganda leads to the point that it's a bit over the top - everybody here is this way or not specified (until it is specified in a convenient LGBT way). That leads to the world, where being "something else" is OK (and that's right), but you must be like that or you are not cool one. Yes, agitation eventually turns in the same principle as is the thing you agitate against. Hey, we got the point in the first book and now we just want to live in that world, no need to smear it on our faces again and again. And I forget - I'm just getting bored in the art.

I guess the fact that the library book was literally falling apart with pages falling out all over that place did not bode well for this volume. I thought that I was perhaps getting tired of reading one Lumberjane after another, but my daughter also did not care for this volume.

Again, the artwork. I much prefer the original illustrator. Also, the sasquatches just looked *weird*. Then, the story seemed a mishmash at first until the roller derby came into play. The girls’ crazy roller derby names were pretty fun, and probably the highlight of this volume for me. Still, I was pretty disengaged throughout most of this volume.

It was absolutely wonderful dipping back into this world. I loved the cohesive, short story arc, the yetis and sasquatches, the roller derby (it sounds so fun but so painful!), and the art is wonderful as always!

Vol. 9: On A Roll 🍒🍒🍒🍒🍌
Chapters # 33-36

2018

When Jo decides to find out why the electricity is not working, she discovers a group of unhappy Yeti. Their home has been taken over by the Sasquatches and refuse to leave. When they discover an old box of roller skates, they decide to form Roller Derby teams, winner takes all. As Sasquatches come to watch game, the Yeti move back into their home.

I love this series. Its positive, and fun. Graphics are really good, and the beginning lessons of each volume are fantastic. Esp great for middle grade girls!! Inspiring.

Another wonderful instalment in the Lumberjanes series, involving roller derby and yetis. Barney's character was further developed and they are going by they/them pronouns now. I am so glad that younger audiences have this kind of representation in this series, it's so important for people to see themselves represented and accepted, and I loved the fact that the scene had this teaching moment about what pronouns were- it was integrated so seamlessly and it's fantastic to know that the younger audience is being educated and affirmed.

Story
This series continues to delite. Sasquatches playing roller derby is not a thing I ever thought I needed to read about, but apparently I did, and it was fantastic.

Artwork
I think they switched artists again. I can't be sure anymore at this point. Thankfully through all the changes I continue to enjoy the artwork.

Read as single issues. I think first time I’ve given lumberjanes only three stars. Hate, hate the art. It made the whole story ugly. (The story was cute, so it wasn’t all bad. But. Damn. They’ve been scraping the barrel with artists, lately.)
