See what perils await our beloved blue-haired adventurer in the sixth book of Luke Pearson’s widely praised series. We rejoin our heroine for her latest adventure just as she awakes to find herself...in the body of a troll! Her mother is worried sick, and is perplexed by the strange creature that seems to have taken Hilda’s place. Now, both of them are in a race to be reunited before Ahlberg and his safety patrol get the chance to use their new secret weapon to lay waste to the trolls, and Hilda along with them!
Luke Pearson is a British illustrator, cartoonist, and comic book writer best known for the Hilda series of comics for Nobrow Press, and Hilda, the Netflix series based on the comics. He has also storyboarded episodes of the Cartoon Network series Adventure Time, during its fifth and seventh seasons.
Our favorite little blue-haired girl gets to find out more about trolls than she bargained for in this delightful adventure that she shares with her mother.
For a lot of the book I wasn't sure if I liked it or not, it had great elements, the idea of changelings, treasure hoards, people who shoot first and question later, the politics of walls, that seemed all too disparate and disconnected, and then it clicked. The love of mothers, the care between parent and child, everything just worked and the balance between civilization and nature was found. And thankfully this volume did NOT end on a cliffhanger!
The last book was quite disappointing, but this ode to mothers wraps up the two-part story quite magnificently as Hilda works to return to her normal life after being kidnapped by trolls.
"Wow efekt" z Hildy mi už vyprchal, přesto je Král hory setsakra dobrej a v žánru dětských komiksů exceluje.
(As an aside, I bought the hardcover version of this book. Had I known sooner the beautiful binding that the hardcover versions had, I would've bought them sooner. As it stood, I've gotta figure out what to do with the softcover versions of volume 1 - 5: whether to keep them or gift them.)
In any case, this seemed like a very satisfying conclusion to what Luke Pearson had been teasing since the start of the series - that is, why there is much animosity between humans and trolls. I'm glad that I've gotten my hands on it. It's heaps of fun, and I thoroughly enjoyed the message behind it, regarding a mother's love. It's what Hilda needed to hear and learn.
4.5* A wonderful finale to a lovingly crafted, innovative comic series ful of heart and whimsy. At times, a little bizarre and filled with more tension than is usual for a Hilda comic, but it made me laugh, smile and a cry at the end. One of my favourite comic series of all time and one of the few that I own physically. I will surely come back to these on a rainy day when I need a little comfort.
The 6th volume and this time tons of trolls, revelations, and a few moments that brought tears to my eyes.
I read this one in Dutch, but wrote my review in English so more people can read it.
I just LOVE the Hilda series. Well, OK, when I first started the series years ago I wasn’t such a big fan of Hilda. But now after re-reading the series again, watching the show on Netflix when it aired, and read the books that were made after that (which features some parts of the show/GNs but also have new material), I can say I love the series, Hilda is an amazing and strong character.
This one continues where the 5th volume left off. Hilda wakes up as a troll, and we see her place at home in the city has been taken by a troll child. From that point we see two POVs. Hilda’s as she tries to figure out how to get home, how to become human, how to make things normal again. Hilda’s mom as she desperately tries to get Hilda back. I definitely had a few moments during Hilda’s mom’s POV that I was tearing up. I loved how, despite all the dangers, she kept searching, kept looking, kept thinking of new ideas.
Along the way we learn more about the city, about the trolls that live so close to it. Continuing on the last volume, we see that the trolls are getting closer to the city. Not always because they want to, but because something is luring them to it. I loved that this was added. That not only do we see Hilda trying to get back, but that we also get an explanation on what is going on with the trolls. Because the trolls aren’t all bad. Yes, sure, some of them are, but this also goes for humans.
I do wish that Hilda thought a bit more about things, those bells weren’t hung for nothing, yet she thinks nothing of it.
The ending had me tearing up and smiling. It was just so wonderful, and it explains so much about the trolls. I am glad that thanks to this ordeal Hilda learned to talk to trolls so she could help out with the situation.
I do hope that this doesn’t mean the end of the series though. Given the ending (which I loved), I am a bit worried. I want more Hilda, and I am sure this world is still full with stories left to tell. Adventures to have. crosses fingers
All in all, a beautiful and gorgeous volume and I would highly recommend this and the other books.
Note: I also wrote this review for the Manchester Public Library (CT) Goodreads account.
At the time of my reading this, "Hilda and the Mountain King" is the last book in this series. I am a notorious series quitter (my track record for finishing entire series is pretty poor) but I went through this one very quickly and would easily pick up more if they were published. The characters are wonderful and the illustrations are beautiful and creative. A win all around.
Výborne prepojenie života Hildy v meste so životom trollov. Tento komiks má opäť všetko, čo potrebuje - napínavý pre deti, zaujímavý pre dospelých, zvrat, priateľstvo, no jednoducho všetko.
I love Hilda´s adventures so much! I tried reading it translated, but they did really bad job - so here we are, reading the original. Beautifully drawn, captivating story, all the stars from me. Thanks!
After such a looooong wait for part two, I couldn't be more pleased with the resolution! The information revealed at the climax was totally unexpected and created quite a bit of drama and suspense, and it all resolved so beautifully. More of a focus on big events than relationships and characters (like the series usually is), but it's entirely appropriate here. My love for Hilda and her folks (human, animal, or magical) continues to grow.
After the cliffhanger ending of Hilda and the Stone Forest, fans had to endure a 3-year wait for this continuation. Not me though, because I only started this series earlier this year, ha ha suckers! That's what you get for reading current books!
Mocking aside, it was worth the wait. Pearson continues to deliver charm, adventure, mystery, and terror to readers of all ages. This is the culmination of the entire series and... might be the last volume? It certainly could be, story-wise, although it does not have to be if Pearson wants to continue making this series. I am happy if it ends here and he moves on to other projects.
Hilda has been transformed into a changling troll, and a troll child has replaced her in the human city. While Hilda's mother searches for her daughter on the mountainside by day, Hilda is learning about the trolls' inner life underground in the caves. She befriends a mysterious troll who promises to turn her back into a human, if she completes three dangerous tasks.
I love this fun graphic novel! The story is so imaginative, and the characters are compelling and emotional. I love the relationship between Hilda and her mother. The artwork is beautiful and strange, perfectly capturing the moods of the magical land where Hilda has her adventures. I have really enjoyed the books much more than the Netflix show, and I like the direction the story takes much better in the books.
As always, the illustrations were fantastic. Sometimes I stopped reading to admire the artwork. It’s really well done.
I loved the other Hilda graphic novels, but this one was even more insightful and heartwarming as the other ones. It really was worth the wait and I still cannot believe, that now the Hilda series has come to an end. This special graphic novel will always have a place in my heart. (By the way, I can really recommend the Netflix series. It’s also very heartwarming and cozy.)
This is my favourite Hilda story so far (and they're all great so the bar was high) because it focuses a lot on the mother/daughter relationship between Hilda and her mum, and also on human relationship to the Trolls, who have been a big part of the entire series and world. I love the premise and the way it's treated, I love how we see Hilda's mum and Hilda being badass on their own and together, and I love how lyrical and magical the ending is. I hope Luke Pearson writes more stories in this universe, but I also won't be mad if it ends here, because that was a great conclusion. Can't wait to see the animated film adaptation!
that was so cute and whimsy! I know it’s weird to read the last book but I just found this and wanted to read it! And I loved it because of the story, the characters and the drawings!!! Luke Pearson is a great story teller and I can’t wait to read all the other graphic novels about Hilda’s adventures.
