Rock Valley High #6

Dare You to Catfish the Hockey Player

Rate this book
A little dare never hurt anybody...

I’ve never been one of those girly girls. I prefer sneakers to heels and covering up my curls with a beanie hat. But there’s one thing I do own and it’s my gaming skills. In the history of Rock Valley High, no girl has ever won the online gaming tournament.

But I'm going to make history this year.

Only two guys stand in my way: the Corrigan brothers.

Gabriel Corrigan and his twin, Michael, aren’t just huge hockey stars. They’re gamers, too. If they had it their way, a girl like me would never touch a controller again.

But sometimes, a girl’s gotta game.

What they don’t know is that I’ve been fooling Gabriel with my fake online profile for months and now we’re partners for the tournament. He won’t know he’s been catfished until the final round – when it’s every man (and woman) for themselves.

Sweet justice.

But the more time I spend offline with Gabriel, the more I realize I might have been wrong.

The way he looks at me. The way he talks when his brother isn’t around. None of it makes sense, especially how being near him makes me feel all kinds of delicious things.

Now my heart is starting to wonder if the gaming tournament might not be the only prize worth winning...

This is Beth’s story – the final sweet young adult romance in the Rock Valley High series of stand-alone novels.

No lie I was so ready to read this book. More than the book with Lexi. Because I wanted to know what will happen when Gabriel finds out he was being catfish.

But the thing is; he didn’t say anything he still wanted something with Beth. Which I liked because he found the camera chip (I forgot the name) lol. And didn’t say anything to Beth about he found it.

In my mind I assume that Gabriel did find it. I was right too. The funny thing was Michael, Gab horrible twin brother tried to ruin things between both Gabriel and Beth. But in the end Gab don’t even care. Because he already knew who Beth username name was. Didn’t say nothing!

I think he she wouldn’t have ran out of it the classroom she would’ve learned that Gabriel wasn’t mad at her. Especially with him sending her a message explaining that he already knew who her gamer tag was....

In the end I was just glad that Beth did won that tournament and stick to Michael because he was horrible to her since middle school over losing a game. Smh! & Gabriel finally telling his brother off about how he treating woman was a good one. I just wish I could’ve read what Gab actually said and did to or said to his twin brother...

Eeeeek!! This was such a fun book and a great finale to the series! Beth was a feisty one and I’m so glad Gabriel accepted her exactly as she was. High school is a hard time and there are definitely insecurities that come out during those years. I’m grateful that Gabriel didn’t bat and eye at any of Beth’s insecurities and he was there to help encourage her. That’s needed in a healthy relationship. Now if only she can do the same for him, that would be great! Also, can we talk about that kiss? Shoot!! That definitely gave me butterflies! 😅

I’m not a huge gamer but I know my way around Call of Duty and other video games...Thanks to my husband mostly. This was a fun and refreshing storyline. Hockey and video games. :) Can’t get better than that! I loved it and highly suggest this one! It may be my favorite from the entire series. Even though there were a lot of great ones.

I received a complementary advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review. This in no way affected my opinion. It was a great read! Thank you, Lacy Andersen!

I've loved all the books in this series but this book was by far my favourite of the series. I loved the evolution of Beth and Gabriel's relationship and how their history affected their relationship. I also enjoyed the aspect of the catfishing and how it led to multiple revelations throughout the book and I really liked how hockey was weaved into the plot so effortlessly with their class project and that the hockey rink was host to some of the most pivotal moments in the book. I also really enjoyed the friend dynamic between Beth, Charlotte and Lexi (I think I liked them better than Audrey, Trina and Mandy) and how supportive they were of each other throughout each of their books. Overall this was a very well written book and a great conclusion to the series (though I wouldn't say no to more books in this world 😉)

It was pretty cute. I'm such a sucker for online love. This technically wasn't online love but I liked it nonetheless

Dang, this book surprised me with how good it was!

Jutting out my chin, I summoned all the courage I had and made up my mind on the spot. I was going to enter this year's gamer tournament. And I was going to win. No one--not even Michael or Gabriel Corrigan--was going to stop me. That was a promise.

Likes:

• Beth had personality (something sorely lacking in most YA MCs) and was relatable and likable. She's someone I'd love to be friends with irl. Also, I love when YA girls gobble large amounts of food unashamedly.

My craving for fast food came roaring back, so I grabbed a handful of fries and shoved them all in my mouth at once. "I'm not sure what you mean," I said quickly, my mouth full. If my mom were here, she would've given me the eye for my lack of table manners.

• Gabriel was such a sweet, kind, and understanding guy. It was so refreshing to read about a love interest who actually supported the MC and let her be strong instead of trying to get in her face and protect her. He knew the whole time that she didn't need his protection and I loved that he took a step back and let her do her thing. It was very respectful and pleasant to read about.
• Gaming aspect was super unique and interesting.
• Beth's inner turmoil throughout the book was spot on and really added depth to her character. Her desire for honesty and her raw emotions were really cool.
• Both Beth and Gabriel liked Harry Potter. Okay, this speaks for itself. My only issue was that they dared to say Gryffindor is superior... Ravenclaw forever and always, guys 💙 (Jk, all the houses are awesome!)

Dislikes:

• People chewed/bit their lips way too much. It kinda drove me insane. All throughout the book they'd do that and it was just plain painful to read.
• The romance, while lovely and enjoyable, started out slow burn but then escalated a little too quickly for my taste right before the halfway mark. I would've liked it to be dragged out a tad longer. However, I don't think it was that big of a deal because there was a big conflict that kept them apart shortly after.
• Beth's BFFs, Lexi and Charlotte, were kinda annoying. Idk if it's just me, but they grated on my nerves throughout the book. They were supportive toward Beth, but it still seemed like they were a bit shallow.
• Beth came off as a bit condescending/mocking toward other girls who wore makeup and pretty dresses. It's totally okay to like dressing up and styling makeup--who says you can't do those things and be sassy and badbutt?

I gestured at myself. "At this whole girly thing. At dancing with a boy. At being the type of girl that wears dresses and makeup and acts all sweet all the time. That's not me--at least, not most of the time. Tomorrow, I'll go back to being the girl who wears beanies and baggy black t-shirts and loves video games."

I kinda get what the author was trying to convey there, but who says you can't wear pretty dresses and love gaming at the same time? Seems totally okay to me. And the part about acting "all sweet all the time" really bugged me. Just because you're wearing a dress and mascara, doesn't mean you're automatically the nicest person alive. I wish ppl wouldn't stereotype others so much.

• Writing contradicted itself a few times. Ex: Michael's and Gabriel's eyes were described as gray at the beginning of the book, but later on were always referred to as blue.
Also, this phrase popped up on one of the pages: The breath I hadn't known I was holding left my lungs in a whoosh. *groans*

Overall, I really liked this book and I'm very glad I read it!

Michael Corrigan has always bullied and criticized 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐫𝐲𝐞 (h) for being a girl gamer. When she gets partnered with his brother 𝐆𝐚𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐧 for a project (H) she assumes it will be a terrible experience. However, the two unknowingly have a friendship as Battlescar13 and CurrerBFighting (her online @) so Beth can game without judgment from the guys at her school. When she enters the gaming competition under her online persona and he becomes her partner, she wants to tell Gabe the truth behind her online account because she doesn’t want to lie to him. When she realizes he isn’t a terrible person and likes him, she fears he will lash out when he discovers that she has been catfishing him and entered the competition as his partner without telling him.

This book was what you would expect from a YA book – it was short, sweet, and had typical teenage problems. Beth was such an interesting character, and I loved that she was a better gamer than everyone, and she KNEW IT – girl boss. It was a cute concept, and it was interesting to see how she had this online persona and got along really well with her bully’s identical twin brother. I wish she hadn’t judged Gabriel based on Michael’s actions alone because it could have saved them both the miscommunication. It was adorable that Gabe had liked her the entire time but didn’t know how to stand up to his brother. In another universe, I am certain that Michale would have had a slight crush on Beth if he wasn’t such a red flag.

Gabriel is the sweeter brother who loves to volunteer his time to teach kids hockey and crushes on a gamer girl, aka Beth, in secret. He was timid and didn’t say anything to defend her, but he would step up in his own way. His development at the end was really good, and I loved that there wasn’t a dramatic fight because he understood why she kept her identity a secret from him. Do I think they would grow up and end up together… not exactly. However, it is their perfect first love relationship, and it's still cute.

This is a quick read, so if you love YA HS romance books, this might pull you out of a slump. It isn’t very memorable, but you will enjoy reading it and probably have swoon moments because of Gabriel.

★ ★ ★ ★ (4/5)

i found this through Lacy’s tiktok and thought it sounded right up my alley, so i decided to give it a shot and i’m so glad i did!

this was a short, adorable read! i’ve been reading a book a day for this year, and i was afraid i wasn’t going to finish a book for January 4th (because… hockey), but i read this in about an hour and a half and finished it right before it turned into January 5th 🫣

obviously i think if you even take a quick glance at my page, you’ll realize that i LOVE hockey books, and this one was SO CUTE! hockey gamer boy x gamer girl?! count me in!

Gabriel was sweet, and although it took the entire almost 150 pages for him to finally stand up to his brother, i’m actually kinda glad, because we got to see what an absolute badass Beth was. she took no shit and never held back in telling Michael just how it is.

i loved the secret online identity concept! and the fact that Gabriel liked her the entire time?! ABSOLUTE SWOON!

i knocked off a star just because the whole “not like other girls” thing annoyed me. i think i’ve spoken on before about how much i dislike the fact that a lot of authors buy into the whole “not like other girls” thing and as a certified girly girl, i wish there could be more badass girls who still love pink and makeup and all sorts of other stereotypical “girly” things. but i also can how the fact that she wasn’t like “other girls” was relevant to the plot, which is why i only took away one star when usually i would take away two.

Do i recommend: i do! it was a cute, quick, and fun read!

Spanish & English Opinion ::

ESP ::

ENG ::

I loved this book. The cover, the plot, the characters, everything.
Beth and Gabriel are a sweet, cute couple.

It’s unbelievable that even though we have virtual world, modern things and lots of technology, chauvinistic ideas are still around, believing women cannot do some things.

This is why I loved Beth. She’s fierce, talented, authentic and encounters a guy that admired her, loves her how she is and supports her also.
Gabriel is this book boyfriend that is reserved, mysterious but really sweet.

Loved it!

A wonderful end to the series and my favourite of the three secondary cast of girls (Charlotte and Lexi being the two before this book). But I've read every book in this series and enjoyed them all. :)

The romance in this one is super sweet and again I like how there are lessons to be learned. From girls being gamers to self confidence and standing up to bullies. Beth made a great protagonist and Gabriel a swoony love interest. Though I'm not a big gamer, I did enjoy the gaming references. Perfect for if you're looking for a sweet and clean, swoony romance.

(I received an ARC and this is my honest and voluntary review)

1.2/5

The girl is VERY 'quirky'. She's "not like other girls" in a very annoying way.
I guess my main issue is that most of the characters are unlikeable and it is completely unrealistic. A 5k$ prize for a high school gaming tournament first off?? NO. And there are people being sexist saying "girls can't game" and no one defends the victim? Usually that doesn't happen. Plus, the idea of girls being gamers is viewed as taboo and sooooo baffling, but it's not. Like, it's really common and to pretend otherwise is really embarrassing. The writing was pretty simple, no nuance, very matter of fact.

This book is probably suitable for 10-13-year-olds, I would say.
Thank god it was short :)

sports romance, high school, YA romance

Being a gamer myself and big into hockey, I figured I'd try this even tho it seemed a bit young. It was a cute story and the drama seemed believable without it being too annoyingly set up. Gabe was a really likeable guy and Beth was a strong female lead. Definitely on the sweeter side for romance, so good for teenagers.

Giving it a 5 star for who it would be written for, but as an adult, I'd maybe put it closer to 4.

It was a good book but I felt that it was super short and kinda rushed. They made Micheal seem like the bad guy but he only really did one major things I feel like if they kept sprinkling him in the book a bit more and making there rivalry more apparent. The time she hate to lived Gabriel was super fast I felt like they need a few more heartfelt moment for this book to be great.

Great ending to a great series

Beth and Gabriel are so perfect. I love the strong female lead that actually inspires her man to be stronger. Lots of chemistry and heat while staying completely clean.
