“i’ll walk with you through spring, through summer, over autumn, and across winter. and then i’ll walk with you through another four seasons.”
The story itself is interesting enough, the author did a great job of depicting the main characters' relationship and how they grow as a person throughout the years. The story was believable and I could really sympathize with the characters and understand the reasons behind their actions.
However, I still think that the writing is lacking a bit. I'm not sure whether this is the author's unique style and wrote the novel like this on purpose but it felt very episodic to me. It didn't feel like reading a novel at all but like reading scene after scene after scene which then made up a whole story. The different scenes within the chapters were even numbered - so perhaps it was really intentional.
But even despite this, it could've been written more like a continuous story than in such an episodic way. The story itself was interesting, but I couldn't help thinking it has so much more potential. I mean, instead of an unnecessarily long and boring sex scene, there could've been more politics in it. Well, besides the I-want-to-get-you-killed-because-you-were-our-father's-favourite-and-thus-set-to-inherit-the-throne-instead-of-me-the-heir-apparent-despite-you-being-the-youngest trope. Which is also good (and kind of necessary to oust him somehow from the palace since the MC won’t have an heir if he marries the one he loves - and thus cannot become the emperor) but it was resolved quickly, we didn't get to see all the scheming and intrigues within the palace and only got glimpses of it. But then again, this is not a thousand pages long war epic but a relatively short novel, so that’s a bit understandable.
However, the conflict between the MC and the ML following the assassination attempt was believable. For me, what this author does really well is conveying emotions and evoking those emotions within the reader. I think it’s definitely the novel’s strong point. Not to mention Yan-daren, the sly fox, who always has a fitting remark up his sleeves. I don’t particularly like big age gap stories but this one didn’t feel cringey as most such stories do. When he went off to war I missed him just as much as our Xiao Jiu and couldn’t wait for his return.
The novel is mostly written from the MC’s, Xiao Jiu’s POV but thankfully, we get to read some of Yan-daren’s POV as well regarding his thoughts about the nature of his relationship with both the emperor and Xiao Jiu. Loyalty and love battle within him and he only gets to choose one. (Or more like transferring his loyalty to someone else.) It was interesting to read as we finally got to see a different side of him which made us understand him and his behaviour towards the MC more. While Xiao Jiu is a likeable character through and through and it was just heartwrenching to read his thoughts when he believed his Yan-daren had betrayed him. Even if most of the time nothing is as it seems. Which this novel continues to prove over and over again.
