War. It’s a heavy little word. For some reason I’d had the idea that this was more of a rival gang situation.
So, what do we have here? Fire & Flood, book one of the new Mount Olympus Academy series. If you can't tell by the series name, it's set in a Percy Jackson-esque world in that it incorporates gods and monsters from greek mythology. But more than anything, I’d say that it resembles Harry Potter in how the main character gets whisked away from their crappy life into a magical boarding school that has different “classes” which are like the different “houses” in HP. And you best believe there is a super mean rival who literally has “cronies”.
While we’re doing comparisons, I’ll also throw in that not only is the main character in the Assassination Class, but that the authors also threw in the “Ass-Class” joke that fans of the Assassination Classroom series use. (Though I wouldn’t be surprised if this last reference is a coincidence.)

This book unfortunately reads as such a joke. Or a fanfiction. It is super not-serious, which adds comedic value at the expense of its perceived legitimacy. It didn’t help that it was pretty short and that the ending felt quite rushed. I don’t think this was a bad book by any means, it’s just that it didn’t have much going for it either. Very much the definition of a two-star book: Ok.

On the younger side of YA
I thought this was okay. The premise was interesting, but the characters were annoying. A lot of secrets, betrayal and mystery. Still undecided on whether or not I’ll move on to the next book.

This was a great start to a new academy series! Demitria, Kate, and Marley created a new world and put their own spin on Greek mythology and monsters. Edie soon becomes an orphan and foster child once her mom and sister go missing in Greece and her dad and grandmother die during an unpredicted storm. Hermes, the messenger god from myths, shows up and convinces Edie that she belongs at Mount Olympus Academy and that monsters killed and took her family. With revenge in reach, she packs a bag, ready to leave her past behind. At the academy, things are much harder and more confusing than she once thought with unusual classmates, bullies, not being able to shift, and many secrets to be uncovered leaving her clueless in who she is and who to trust.I really enjoyed the start of Edie’s journey in this new world and the friendships and frenemies that she made along the way. Cassie and Greg were my favorite characters with their tendency to talk too much, having weird personalities, and overall side kick friendship with Edie. I can’t wait to see what happens next in the war of gods against monsters with the students in the middle of it all!

When Edie's father and grandmother are killed, she learns that her life isn't what she thought it was. Ending up at the Mount Olympus Academy, she begins to realize that everything she thought she knew was wrong, and there are secrets being kept from her everywhere, and she doesn't know who she should believe and trust.
The story pulled me in to the point to want to keep reading to find out what would happen next, and to find out the answers to the secrets that seemed to be popping up everywhere. It was a very quick read, and it will be interesting to see where the story goes next.

Not very well written and the plot is not executed particularly well. It’s very juvenile while also being very explicit. I added one star for entertainment value. I didn’t like it but I had fun so I may read the other books.

This is EXACTLY the kind of book that I like- Paranormal NA/YA Romance books that draw me in completely with the entertaining story and characters and wonderful world.
I loved this book an thought it was an excellent start to a series, no complaints from me- exciting to see what happens next!

There should be CW at the start of the book. It would be a fun quick read if it weren't for outdated transphobic, homophobic and abelist concepts, such as:
“If you really want to eliminate wind shear, you should cut your breasts off,” she informs me, to which I politely decline. “Suit yourself,” she says, showing me her own, trim silhouette. “I can rise a hundred feet in a second.” “And I can get laid,” I tell her, which she actually laughs at.
So...women without breasts don't get laid according to these authors.
“What, Hermes and Mr. Zee? Yeah, everyone knows they bang. Hermes is the most sexually fluid person in the world. He even tried to come on to Ocypete at one point— she almost gouged his eyes out as a rejection!” Hmm. Well, there goes my feeling special about having a god flirt with me. Apparently Hermes will make a move on anything.
Men and harpies are put on the same level of "anything" Hermes would bang...alright.
“You’re telling me Ocypete isn’t all there?” I challenge her. Then I remember that my flying teacher cut her breasts off on purpose. It could be a fair assessment.
Again...women without breasts are portrayed as undesirable.
There are a few inaccuracies as well, like dragons with wings (they didn't have any in Greek mythology, and this book's worldbuilding is heavily based on it) and the use of togas, which are Roman, instead of Greek correspondents; these details didn't even bother me at first, I know it's a very<\i> light read and I expected a few results of poor research, but those passages spoiled the read and made even the smallest faults astronomically bothering.

The sub-plots in this book are varied. The reader has to dance a bit to understand all the nuances. Pity actually being a double agent doesn't sirprise. Edie being fooled does. She's a MC who grows on a reader slowly. Val is a confusing character who I'm not sure is worth all the fuss. Tina may have more layers than a straight up crazy vampire. Cassie is difficult but lovable as Edie's friend. I kind of like Greg and am sad about Darcy. I will read book 2. 2.85 stars, happy reading!

Some interesting bits, but the main not knowing what Leviathan is? (Yes, she was in shock but still … forced plot based obliviousness irritates me). On reflection I didn't hate it, but there was a bit of a force skim, gotta finish in a few places.
The shifters were interesting, the side kick was fun …. may come back to this if I'm really bored at some point.

I liked the main character and side characters, but thought that they could have used some fleshing out. The classes weren't very detailed either. The cover is nice, and the plot in general was okay. Honestly, it felt a bit contrived and I don't think I'll read book 2 in the series. 3 stars.

Such a fun take on mythology. Will appeal to fans of vampires, shape shifters, werewolves, Greek gods, not to mention romance 😉Loved Edie’s friendship with Cassie and curious to see where the next book goes!

Edie had been sick and couldn't go to Greece with her Mom and sister. They would be gone for 3 months. The girls and parents were all supposed to go so they rented out their house for that time.
Edie and her dad would be staying with her grandmother near the beach. OK maybe not too bad but disappointed about Greece.
After some time Dad starts to worry because Mom was missing her Skype times.
They decided to out to eat and she thought they would talk about it then. But he was getting upset he couldn't get her. Edie decided to go out on the balcony to let dad be alone.
Grandma and her friends were already on the boardwalk.
Suddenly Edie sees a wall of water headed for the beach. She told grandma to run but they couldn't get away in time.
Edie's dad grabs her from the balcony and up to the roof.
Edie is in shock and her dad told her Florida doesn't get tsunamis. Something is wrong.
Dad goes out. Gives her the if something should happen to me speach. That's the last thing she saw him. The last she talked to her he told her ichor
Edie meets a man named Hermes who wants to take her to the Academy. He mentioned ichor, her dad's passcode so that's where she is going.
She found she had wings and told she was a shifter. She's never shifted and doesn't know how. Also she needs to find out what she is and hopes she fits in.

This was an ok read for me. It started better and just lost its magic and spark for me as it progressed. The characters were ok as well and honestly, did not bring any major spark for me. I liked the overall concept of the story - Greek gods and monsters. It is always fascinating to find out more about what the gods are capable of.
The FMC, Eddie, is oblivious of anything magical existing in her mundane life. However, one event changes everything for her and she is whisked away to an academy for shifters, vampires and the likes. Not knowing whom to trust and being unaware of everything that happened in her past life she is at a bit disadvantage. She makes some friends and some enemies. Thus, begins her journey to figure out what and who she really is? We do find out at the end and it is pretty cool. I liked her friend Cassie.
MMC, Val the vampire, I did not get him much and he did not wow me at all. Only thing gong for him was that he was not sparkly ;). He merely came across as meh to me and honestly, don't know must about him. His twin sister Tina, the psycho, is Eddie's roommate and is constantly in bitch mode. Again, we don't know much about them.
I feel no emotional attachment to any of the characters. There is room for character development and story development for sure. Sadly, I will not be continuing with this series.

Slow read and boring ...spoilers
I wanted to give this book a shot of developing into something great but after 65% of all about nothing but repetitive weak mc who can't fight or who is being bullied by her roommate with no reasons whatsoever, I had enough. Reading that far was painfully boring and nothing happened until of course at the end. Cliche storyline of adopted mc, weak with no power, block power, bully, instant love with no chemistry, and repetitive self doubt.
Nothing was a surprise on this book. I figured the mc as a dragon already at 59%. The m/m kissing scene between school staff was not needed. Writing was okay but the execution not so much. Could have been better with less characters chattering and more actions and the mc being kick ass. Instead we get a poor me and weak mc. Did not enjoy this long winded boring book. What a wasted time spent. Can't recommend this boring and predictable plotline.

I was pleasantly surprised by how entertaining and fast-paced this was.
Don't get me wrong, it is so clearly inspired by books like Vampire Academy, Half-Blood and even Percy Jackson that it is almost a rip-off BUT... Only almost. Edie is enough of her own person to carry a book that has otherwise very much been seen before - Greek Gods, magic academy, hunting monsters, all that jazz - that it is worth reading. And the authors are certainly not afraid to kill characters, even if they have spent most of the book getting the reader invested in them.
In summation, this is a series I am going to continue sooner rather than later.

This book was better than I thought it would be. I was a little iffy going into it but I ended up really enjoying it!
What I liked:
-Cassie is my favorite character! I love her personality and I feel really bad for her because not many people lile her.
- The plot twist at the end took me by surprise. I didn't expect it at all.
- The first few chapters really hook you and get you intrigued for what happens next.
- I knew that Pity was lying about the gods being the bad guys but I didn't expect her to be the leaders. Even tough she was telling the monsters to not kill any of the students I don't think she really cared.
-I really liled how Themis was potrayed in this.
What I didn't like:
-How th other gods were betrayed. It felt out of character for me since I like Greek mythology and have read other books based off these myths (like Percy Jackson.) Many of the gods wouldn't be hiding under a table during a moster attack. They would be fighting back.
-I'm kind of getting sick of the sexy vampires and the main character falling in love with him.
-Tina is so mean. Like, chill girl. Don't go around saying a student is causing murders without further evidence.
Overall, Ii really enjoyed this! I would say it's like a mix between Harry Potter and Percy Jackson so if you like those books, I recommend picking this up!

Cool.
I like the plot of the story and the characters, I plan to read the second book because of the cliffhanger and that it's part of the kindle unlimited, otherwise i wouldn't waste my money. This story was rushed, two months go by with zero progress. The first two chapters ate the conflict and resolve for vengeance, the entire rest of the book is the main character lollygaging because she doesn't want to know what she shifts into.
I like all the characters but there was tons of room for more character development and school building. Seems like he authors had a two week deadline to get the book out. I'm interested in the story to read for free, but developed zero emotional attachment to any of the characters. Here's to hoping they add "more" to book two.

Way too short and leaves you hanging
Why oh why can't a YA author write longer books instead of stretching the series out forever? That kind of ploy for a YAs dollars is sad. Especially when the storyline is reasonably interesting. Even though I'm an adult, I did like the book, but these books are just too short for my taste.
The dialogue is sometimes stilted and unrealistic. The school is too much like the Percy Jackson books. But I did enjoy the fact that the Heroine was an unknown variety of shifter. Will I read the next? Doubtful, but I did enjoy this one. 3-1/2 stars for me.

Great storyline
I love academy paranormal stories like this. And the story was a little cliche but I still ate it up. But wow this books needs editing done really REALLY badly. I am not great at grammar but this one was to the point of annoying. I saw a characters name get misspelled once, saw a conversation switch characters and it was mushed into one paragraph. Tons of sentences that didn't make sense. I still finished the book because this genre is my favorite but I was flabbergasted at how many errors it contained.

A less historically / mythically sound version of Percy Jackson with an angsty female protagonist. There were a mish-mash of fantasy creatures (such as vampires and werewolves) that didn’t necessarily belong amongst Greek Gods and for me they just weren’t knitted together well enough; it was almost as though the authors had tried to cram in as many fantasy elements and possible rather than focusing on fewer and ensuring they made more plot sense and gelled together. The characters were quite stereotypical, tongue in cheek at times with the expected teenage cliques.

Very interesting story
I like that there are many ways this story can continue. So far some things have gone the way I expected. I don't like the back and forth between characters as much (dating then not liking then not friends then not) but it's not that big a deal 🤗 the biggest value at this point is that this first book has set up about 10 different open paths for the story to go. We will see where we are taken next!

I don't like the back and forth between characters as much (dating then not liking then not friends then not) but it's not that big a deal 🤗 the biggest value at this point is that this first book has set up about 10 different open paths for the story to go. We will see where we are taken next!

Full on academy adventure
Losing everyone and suddenly landing (literally) at an academy run by gods, turns Edie's life upside down. Gaining wings, having a seer as a best friend, dating a vamp, and hanging with bat shifters are just some of the new weird in her life. Secrets abound, betrayal....and myth becoming reality...lots of surprises. Which I think will continue through to the next one.....!!

Nice Intro Book
This was a nice introductory book to the series.
After tragedy strikes, Edie is thrown into a not so friendly or accepting world.
Things are not what they seem, people are not who they are believed to be. We're not quite sure who the good guys and bad guys are.
Looking forward to seeing more secrets revealed in the upcoming books

Loved it
I didn't want to like this book. All the mythology pulled me in. I would have liked a little more history on the gods themselves but hey it wasn't about them right? So who exactly is Edie? What is she? So many different types of shifters! A seer as a best friend that only predicts the lunch menu...my kind of friend. The heroin of the book pretty badass

Loved when she finally shifted.
The beginning made me sad. But really set up for the rest of the book. Cassie was a great character. I think Tina and Val have a secret that will be revealed. Who is really the bad guy??? I think Mr Zee and Themis are on opposite sides. What's the true purpose of the academy and who is the bad guys. Aw

This is fantastic and I loved it.
I guessed right what she was and it was so obvious and drove me mad the teachers didn’t or pretended not to know.
I can’t wait to read the next book and hopefully we find out more of her past.
I really hope something happens between Val and Edie or she finds someone even better.

TOTALLY AWESOME 😁
Wow, this wasn't what I expected, but by far, sooo much better 😃. Geek girl loses everybody, then suddenly gets thrust into a completely different school and life 😉. Lots of action, tweaky characters and interesting situations 😲. Thanks Kate, Quinn, Demitria and Marley, I absolutely Loved this story and look forward to reading more 🤓.

Different good
Ment for young adult readers but interesting for any age. After losing her entire family in less than 24 hours she is found by the messenger of the gods Hermes and sent to live at the academy. She learns she's a shifter but doesn't know what kind till the end of the story. Great read!

Five stars! This book was fabulous...angsty and mysterious and full of suspense. Edie's entire life is unraveling and she is stronger than she ever realized. Will she figure out who she really is before her enemies do?! Eep!
