WOW! What a delightful surprise! This book popped up in my daily Bookbub email and my Kindle Unlimited email. It sounded interesting and I checked the reviews and it definitely peeked my interest. (I'm a history nut.) It has been years since I read any time travel romances, but I had to check it out. Again, WOW! It was very, very good. The writing was outstanding and I loved the story. The amount of historical research on the American Revolution and those famous figures involved had to have been extensive. Yet, they fit into the story line seamlessly. I found another new author!!! Jumping directly to the next book, "Home to McCarron's Corner: Lily's Story." YAY!
This book is historical fiction at its best. The detail was phenomenal, the world-building and wardrobe descriptions made it possible to really imagine you were there! The story is rich in historical facts, but has enough imaginative fiction to engage readers who like a little adventure and romance.
Blurb: Sassy and Owen Winslow were historical experts on the Revolutionary War and the Culpers, Washington’s spy ring. After her husband dies unexpectedly, Sassy struggles to find new meaning in her life. When she goes exploring in the Cohutta Wilderness, she falls through a hole in time, and finds herself in the Indian Territory in 1778, falling in love with Big Sexy Will Selk.
Will Selk, one of Washington’s spies, falls in love with the spunky widow who came to live at McCarron’s Corner after her husband’s death. When he learns she came from Beyond, both Will and the Commander-in-Chief are eager to pick the historian’s knowledge of the American Revolution – and in the process, Washington identifies the Culper Ring’s Madame X, who turns the tide for the patriots to win the war when Sassy provides vital information.
I hated every single page of this book. From the modern day vernacular to the numerous proofreading and editing mistakes. Hated it.
The premise of the plot is by now, very cliche. Woman travels through time and falls in love with a man from the past. While Colonial Georgia doesn’t have standing stones, this book is very Outlander-ish, but nowhere near as good. At first I thought the book was self published and Middleton chose not to pay for an editor or cover designer, but then I saw the copyright information and learned that she is published by Black Rose. So their editors and proofreaders do a 🤬 job.
Middleton gives the reader six to nine pages of back story on the important characters where only a page and a half at most is necessary. The biggest problem however, is that she used this book (and subsequent books in the series I assume) to as a rally for today’s Republican Party. She even managed to fit Antifa into the tale. When you add this to the lack of proofreading and editing you get a book you read only because it was free.
Author Sharon Middleton mixes time travel with romance in this steamy story about Sassy, a history buff who ends up in the exact place and time where her expertise lies. Middleton’s extensive knowledge of Colonial America is evident as she intricately describes the way of life of all those who lived in this era. She takes the reader on a tour of Native American cultures, Colonial life (the working class and the plantation owners), and the founding fathers of the United States, including Washington, Franklin, and Jefferson, among others. With her knowledge of what will happen in the near future, Sassy must learn to blend in as well as make sure that the Colonies gain their independence. The suspense as to whether she will disrupt the history of the fledgling Colonies or not is strong. It takes the reader to an exciting and unforgettable end.
Sassy and Owen Winslow taught college classes on the revolutionary war. Owen died and one day while out looking for a way to McCarron's Corner she slips through time to the past. Shadow Wolf finds her and brings her to McCarron's Corner. She makes a life for herself there with Lily and Marc as her neighbors. Marc's adopted brother, Will Selk comes often from his home at Belle Rose. He and Sassy fall in love and she goes with him to Virginia where she meets some of the important men of the revolution. he becomes a help to George Washington. Sassy's family in the present time are worried about her and what happened to her. Eventually her son, Rick finds some letters she has left for him and her brother. Rick has a plan.
This is a very different take on the typical historical fiction. It is based upon the people around the revolutionary war, e.g. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, etc. Despite that, it's also a time travel novel with the lead character traveling back in time from 2018 to 1776. A good amount of humor is thrown which balances difficult topics. All in all, well written, nicely developed scenes, in depth characters, and enjoyable. My only concern is quite a few typos.
This was a light, entertaining read! I personally enjoy historical fiction even if it takes some liberties for the storyline, so a few inaccuracies didn't bother me. The day to day life of pioneers and colonies, along with lovely descriptions and details, made for a charming setting. Some serious elements including abuse and crime and troubled marriage made for an interesting departure from romance. (The sex scenes were a little too far past PG-13 for my taste though.) Overall, I enjoyed the unique idea and execution of this novel!
I loved the marriage of history and fiction. The book was well written with facts and narrative fiction that well depicted the times and events of the revolutionary war. Even the tone travel was successfully blended.
It is probably the best book I have read in a very long time. the hIstory is intriguing the way the author wove the story into now and then.It is a must read. I can to wait to read the next book in the series.
I was intrigued by this historical novel written by Sharon Middleton. There were many characters that I found amazing. John Adams,George Washington , Benedict Arnold are in this story. I cant wait to read the second book in her series. It was very fast moving and well written.
Sassy was a wonderful heroine! I loved the unexpected turns and twist of this book. All the characters pulled you in and made you want to find out more about them. It’s certainly a page turner!
Wow, what a book!!!!! One thing confused me, I thought it was number one but it reads like it is number 2. I sometimes have trouble with time travel books but really had no problems with this one. Imagine going on a hike and telling your son and brother you will be back, but end up falling through time to the 18’th century. Imagine your son and brother trying to figure out where you are when the police stop looking. Imagine knowing about history and how events turn out, but not being able to warn people because it will change history. Why imagine when you can read the book and see what happens.
The concept was lovely but the dialogue was painful. The heroine, despite being a history professor and supposedly a renactor in colonial Williamsburg, kept calling people dude. A more clueless, intolerant heroine would be hard to imagine. First book of the revolution that I have read where I started to cheer for the redcoats. Thankfully it was a freebie
Quite an enjoyable read. Excellent historical fiction. There were a number of typos however, it was easy to see read through them. The characters were well-defined as was the geographical area. I will read more of this author.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I don't usually read romantic books, but the history attracted me. I loved the heroine's spunk in coping with hard situations. I could tell all that time at re-enactments must have helped her adjust to her trip through time. The fight scene was realistic. I have recommended it to several other men who say they have also enjoyed it. Great first novel. I look forward to reading more from her in the future.
All the other reviews tell the story of this story. I’ll just say it was a really good book to me. The falling thru time seemed realistic she seemed to be fully surprised of where she was although I’m not sure anyone would become so comfortable with the whole situation including meeting the fathers of our country with almost a shrug of the shoulders. Oh well. That’s Thomas Jefferson. However it’s fiction. Gotta go with the flow.
Sassy travels back in time to colonial America, with no way to return "home" to modern day. It's a very different and difficult world but Sassy learns to love it. Of course, meeting Will Selk might have something to do with that. I truly loved the story and would have given it five stars, but I found the number of typographical errors to be distracting. If not for that, I would have gladly given give stars.
Sarah (Sassy) went to hike and got lost. A Cherokee found her and took her to McCarron’s corner. There she met Will Selk and they later married. Because she missed her brother and adopted son Will found a way with letters to get to them through families down the line. Sharon writes with wonderful mystery.
History buffs of the American Revolution will love the real life characters brought to life with time travelled Sassy. Details of all aspects of life in this era are woven into the historical events. Romance and adventure are well plotted. Look ping forward to future books in the series.
I made it to chapter three. With the detailed backstory retelling of what seemed like the first novel in the series it makes you wonder why the author didn't just start there. It's all flashback explanations and narrative with very little movement of the plot.
I have enjoyed this book. I was a little doubtful I would like it but I was wrong. I first thought it would just be Owen and Sassy but when he died and she fell through the hole it turned very interesting. I commend the author for the history research you did.
Really liked the story, but it would have been better if the language was cleaned up a bit. All the foul words were not really necessary to get the point across. There are a lot of grammatical errors as well. However, the plot was enjoyable.
This book brought history alive! A fantastic story that made you feel like you had truly stepped back into time! Now to go search for the other books......
A pleasant historical romance. Good plot and well written. It should have 5 stars, but there were too many grammatical errors. A great book to read to forget ones own difficult times
It was a wonderful read.. spunky characters.. will read again! Really interesting to read all the history of the revolution that was embedded in this story. Thanks to the author for all her hard work!
