I picked up തീവണ്ടി യാത്രകൾ on a gut feeling. The title and cover drew me in, giving me the impression that it might be a good travelogue. What I found was something slightly different, but even more memorable: the lived experiences of a loco pilot, narrated with striking freshness.
Most travelogues I’ve read are about journeys to unique or popular places, but this one takes us into the everyday yet extraordinary world of regular train journeys through the eyes of someone who drives them.
There is no room for error in the life of a loco pilot, yet with a sharp eye, the author captures the fleeting beauty of nature and glimpses of people that rush past the window of the engine.
The writing surprised me with its poetic touch, especially for a debut work. It reminded me of the traditions of Malayalam literature, making me wonder what kind of books had inspired the author to write with such lyricism.
What stood out most to me were the challenges and realities of railway life. The stories reveal how loco pilots often go without food or sleep, carrying the responsibility of thousands of passengers.
They face the tragedies of stray animals or people being hit on the tracks, yet must gather themselves to restore the train and continue the journey. It takes a steel heart and steady hands to live such a life.

എന്താണെന്നറിയില്ല എപ്പോഴും വല്ലാത്ത ഒരിഷ്ടമുണ്ട് തീവണ്ടി യാത്രകളോട്. ചെറുപ്പം മുതലെ അതങ്ങനെയാണ്. എന്റെ അച്ഛൻ ഒരു പട്ടാളക്കാരനാണ്.
അച്ഛന്റെ കൂടെ നോർത്ത് ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ഞങ്ങളും താമസിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് കുറച്ച് കാലം.
അന്നവിടെ ആർമി സ്കൂളിലാണ് ഞാൻ പഠിച്ചത്.
അന്നൊക്കെ നാട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് അച്ഛന്റെ ജോലിസ്ഥലത്തേക്കും അവിടുന്ന് നാട്ടിലേക്കുമൊക്കെ ദീർഘ ട്രെയിൻ യാത്ര നടത്തുമായിരുന്നു. മൂന്നും നാലും ദിവസമൊക്കെ നീളുന്ന യാത്രയാണത്.. നാട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് വാങ്ങിച്ച, എന്റെ കൊച്ച് ബാഗിൽ കൊള്ളാവുന്നത്രയും പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ കുത്തി നിറച്ചാണ് ഞാൻ പോവുക.. അതിൽ ബാലരമ ഉണ്ടാകും കഥാ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാകും നോവലുകൾ ഉണ്ടാകും അങ്ങനെ പറ്റുന്നത്രയും പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ ഞാൻ കരുതും. കാരണം അടുത്ത വെക്കേഷനെ ഇനി നാട്ടിൽ വരാൻ പറ്റു. അപ്പോഴേ പുതിയ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ എനിക്ക് വാങ്ങിക്കാനും പറ്റു.. എന്റെ പുസ്തകവും പിടിച്ച് ട്രെയിനിന്റെ വിൻഡോ സീറ്റിൽ ആ തണുത്ത കാറ്റൊക്കെ കൊണ്ട് ഇരിക്കുമ്പോ കിട്ടുന്ന ആ സുഖം..
അതന്ന് മുതലേ ഒരു ലഹരി പോലെയാണ് എനിക്ക്..
താളത്തിൽ വായിക്കാം, ഇടയ്ക്ക് തലയുയർത്തി പുറം കാഴ്ചകൾ കാണാം.
ഇടയ്ക്ക് ഒരു ചൂട് കാപ്പി കുടിക്കാം.
ട്രെയിനിൽ എന്തോരം മനുഷ്യന്മാരെ കാണാം.. പല വേഷത്തിൽ..പല ഭാവങ്ങളിൽ... ഇടയ്ക്കെങ്കിലും ആലോചിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് ഈ ട്രെയിൻ ഓടിക്കുന്ന ആൾ ആരായിരിക്കുമെന്ന്. ആരോടൊക്കെയോ ഞാൻ അത് ചോദിച്ചിട്ടുമുണ്ട്.. ലോക്കോ പൈലറ്റ് എന്നാണ് ആ ആൾക്ക് പറയുക എന്നു മാത്രം അറിയാം. പക്ഷേ ഒരു ലോക്കോ പൈലറ്റിന്റെ ജീവിതം എങ്ങനെയായിരിക്കും എന്ന് ഞാനൊരിക്കലും ചിന്തിച്ചു നോക്കിയിട്ടില്ല. അയാൾ കാണുന്ന കാഴ്ചകൾ എന്തൊക്കെയായിരിക്കാം.. അയാളുടെ ജീവിത രീതികൾ എങ്ങനെയായിരിക്കാം. ഇതൊന്നും ചിന്തിച്ചിട്ടേ ഇല്ല.
ഇപ്പോൾ തീവണ്ടിയാത്രകൾ എന്ന ഈ ബുക്ക് വായിച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോഴാണ് ഒരു ലോക്കോ പൈലറ്റിന്റെ ജീവിതം എങ്ങനെയൊക്കെയാണെന്നു മനസിലാകുന്നത്
വളരെ ആകാംഷയുണർത്തുന്ന മനസ്സിനെ സ്പർശിക്കുന്ന ഓർമ്മക്കുറിപ്പുകളാണിത്.
നമുക്കറിയാം ട്രെയിൻ യാത്ര ചെയുമ്പോൾ എവിടെയെങ്കിലും കുറച്ച് സമയം ട്രെയിൻ നിർത്തിയിട്ടാൽ യാത്രക്കാരായ നമ്മൾ അക്ഷമരായി തുടങ്ങും.ചിലപ്പോൾ മണിക്കൂറുകളോളം നമ്മൾ ട്രെയിൻ എടുക്കാൻ കാത്തിരിക്കാറുണ്ട്.
ആ താമസത്തിന്റെ സാങ്കേതിക കാരണങ്ങളൊക്കെ ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചപ്പോഴാണ് എനിക്ക് സത്യത്തിൽ പിടി കിട്ടിയത്
കഥകാരൻ അനുഭവങ്ങൾ പറയുമ്പോൾ നമ്മളും ആ യാത്രയുടെ ഭാഗമാവും. അവിടെ തീവണ്ടികളും മനുഷ്യരും പ്രകൃതിയും മൃഗങ്ങളും ഒക്കെ കടന്നു വരും.
കഴിയുമെങ്കിൽ നിങ്ങളും ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുക..

Thoroughly enjoyed this collection of memories of a Locomotive Engine Driver. He drove the trains in the Konkan section for couple of decades. Not an account of the technical aspects of engines, but the experience of a human, the amazing beauty of Ghats, the shores, lives of people, passengers and so on.
Also, narrated are some accidents, gruesome ordeal of razing over animals, peacocks and human beings. The incident that also made me cry, was of the train running over a four year old boy, a child who was wandering around the forest plucking flowers, presumably for his sister, while their parents were busy working in the field.
Book has also one whole chapter dedicated to how lovely the Konkan rail line is. Starting from Mangalapuram the line stretches out through very scenic location including Goa crossing rivers and ghat offering panoramic views, incredible beauty of the pristine nature, combined with engineering marvels like the longest bridge, the longest tunnel built to international standards. Amazing. The first time I heard about the RORO train system was from this book.
Recommend to those who would enjoy travelogues with a human perspective, especially those who experienced travels on Indian railway system.

Really enjoyed reading this book.
I used to think autobiographies/biographies are written by 'successful people' and not just any common man like you and me. This book by a Train Engine Driver and his memories changed that for me.
I want to read more books like this.
I wasn't expecting this level of satisfaction from reading this book. Should read more autobiographies of common people like this guy.
I have often wondered how the life of a train engine driver would be. This book gave me the answers to that.
I'll keep this book close to my heart. And Maybe. Sometime soon. On a Saturday evening. With a freshly brewed cup of coffee, open a random chapter of this book. And relive these memories. Again.

Travalogue from a person, whom traveling is his job. Being a loco pilot the experiences he had in each of his travels, has been put in a really classic way. More than the content, the language is superb. Though most chapters have death as the base taste, still it holds you through till last chapter
