He was killed by an Indian, but it is difficult to say why. For many years he had made friends with us and had received a liberal pension from the Government; but it appears that his hatred against the English had again broken out, and in a council held by the Indians, he proposed assailing us anew. After he had spoken, an Indian buried his knife in his heart, but whether to gratify a private animosity or to avoid a further warfare with those who had always thinned their tribes, it is difficult to ascertain.
I feel bad not finishing this, but I just can't get into it. For one thing I was expecting it to be more along the lines of a Cooper novel, but it is actually written for children. Also there are things going on in my life right now that somehow make it painful to read. It is a really good book though...maybe someday I'll share it with my children! 😊
5+ stars. I don't even know how many times I've read this book... and I've loved it (more?) every time. I have laughed over the puns and homorous scenes, melted over the beautiful ones, and flailed over the exciting ones. This book is a part of my heart. <3 I love the wittiness and humour. Emma + Alfred are so funny, and all the others are occasionally humorous as well. The characters grow dearer to me every time, I do believe. I also love just how deeply Christian this book is. The Campbells believe in salvation by their works, but that is only seen once. The rest of the time, the religious discussions are beautiful and very, very true. As for excitement, you will have it aplenty, well mixed with calm to keep you relaxed. I've read this book so often... but I still shrink from that one heart-breaking chapter. If you've read the book, you know what I mean. I look upon it as a disagreeable necessity to hurry though as fast as possible. :'| On the other hand, I still delight in the action scenes and laugh over the jokes. I'm repeating myself, and I apologize... but I simply haven't words to describe how dear this book is to me. I hope you'll read it and love it at least a little.
A Favourite Quote: “‘My children, [...] accept my most hearty thanks and my dearest love. You have all been good, obedient, and cheerful, and have lightened many a heavy load. If when it pleased Providence to send us into this wilderness, it had been part of my lot to contend with willful and disobedient children; if there had been murmuring and repining at our trials; discontent and quarreling among yourselves, how much more painful would have been our situation.’” A Favourite Humorous Quote: “‘Are there any other animals there?’ “‘Yes,’ replied Martin, ‘small game, as we term it.’ “‘What sort are they?’ “‘Why, there's painters, and bears, and catamounts.’ “‘Mercy on us! do you call that small game? why, what must the large be, then?’ said Mrs. Campbell.”
Great reading historical novel about a family from England that moved to England and established a life in an area close to what is now Kingston. Appreciation for pioneers and what it took to survive and establish a life in the new frontier of Canada. I had the good fortune to be able to read the 1844 book, not the version circulating today.
Not my favorite Marryat book but very good. Has interesting perspective about democracy in the United States. Does contain a romance, but there is lots of action and adventure.
