Missionary God, Missionary Bible

Rate this book
Missionary God, Missionary Bible is a one-year devotional based on a chronological reading of the Bible. Each day author Dick Brogden builds the case and the message is reinforced: He who is holy delights to be our God. We are to be His holy people that He might dwell among us. His glorious presence will wholly bless us in order that all nations, every distinct people group, might be likewise blessed. This grand plan, centered on and culminating in Jesus as Savior, Lord, and eternal King over all nations, is what our faith, our Father, and our future is all about. Neither God nor His Bible lets us underemphasize how central all nations are to His overall plan.

Each day includes a Scripture reading, a devotional connecting the reading to God’s great missionary plan, and an unreached people group to pray for.

Dick Brogden is an Assemblies of God missionary to the Middle East.

Dick and Jennifer Brogden’s passion in ministry is to bring the gospel to the Arab world by church planting in those nations. The Brogdens have lived and ministered among Muslims for the last 19 years in three African nations. Dick and Jennifer have two boys, Luke and Zack, both of whom were born and raised in Africa. They currently lead a church planting team that will equip team leaders to plant churches throughout the Arab-Muslim world.

Since university, Dick has dreamed of God using his life to bring one million Muslims to saving faith in Jesus Christ; he humbly acknowledges, however, “I may never lead many, but if I can influence some who will influence others and be a catalyst for ministry in the M*slim world, I would love to see that happen. I want to live a life to make much of God.”

Dick ministers alongside many multi-national missionary teams and strongly believes in the power of spiritual multiplication, as well as the importance of developing self-sustaining ministries. His next goal is to train 33 teams to plant churches in various cities in the Arab world. Dick hopes that God will enable his teams to accomplish this, and then he hopes that another 400 teams will be sent to preach the gospel to every unreached people group in the Arab world. “Then I can die happy,” he says.

Through God’s grace, Dick and Jennifer have been blessed to see their ministry in one African nation multiply seven times, after they faithfully raised and equipped leaders to run home churches. These churches currently feed several hundred believers and are now ministering to third generation Christians. Through the use of spiritual multiplication to create self-sustaining ministries, the believers in that country are now equipped and enabled to continue to reach their country with the gospel through their international church, international school, ladies’ community centre, indigenous development agency, as well as several English centres and cooperative training networks.

"God is a missionary God, and the Bible is a missionary book," writes my friend Dick Brogden in this new devotional. To drive that point home, he guides readers through the Bible day by day, focusing their attention on God's concern for the nations. Each day includes a Bible reading, a one-page devotional, and a prayer focus for people groups who have not (yet) received the gospel. As you read the Bible and Brogden's devotional, you will find this conviction slowly but surely settling into your soul: "He who is holy delights to be our God. We are to be His holy people that He might dwell among us. His glorious presence will wholly bless us in order that all nations, every distinct people group, might be likewise blessed." I highly recommend Missionary God, Missionary Bible to Christian readers.

“Missions is the center of God’s heart and the organizing theme of the whole Bible.”

This year-long chronological Bible devotional plan highlights God’s missionary heart for the nations and his desire to be glorified among all peoples throughout Scripture. Brogden makes connections to this global scope in passages where I had never noticed them before and there are challenges in each reading to pray, send, and go to those who remain unengaged by the Gospel throughout the world. I will be returning to this book often.

Let us “burn with passion for Jesus to be glorified among every people group so God’s big, beautiful family can all go home (Matthew 24:14).”

If you are looking for a devotional guide for 2024, I recommend this one. It will fuel your passion for missions as Dick Brogden looks at each day's reading through a global lens. The daily guide has you reading 4-5 chapters of the Bible in chronological order. Brogden's one-page devotional entries begin with a quote by a famous missionary or church leader and concludes with the name of an unreached people group to pray for. For preachers and speakers, this will be a helpful resource for highlighting God's heart for the world from any Bible passage.
