Brilliant and very entertaining. However, the feeling of holding a perfect book in my hand only set in during the second half.
But first things first: if you're thinking about reading this series, you should start with the short stories. It is indeed better to understand the relationship of the main characters. Otherwise it doesn't feel developed enough and you don't get some of the cross-references.

The plot: felt a bit messy at the beginning, it took me a while to understand how everything was interwoven. But it was ok, so no complains, it just wasn't a smooth flow. Other than that, normally too many interwoven situations would annoy me, but the storytelling here is really seamless. Even if it takes a while.
The fantasy aspects: a dream for someone like me. I'm absolutely in love with the mix of witchcraft, alchemy and paranormal beings that are here. Also, the entanglements with the fae world and the courts is wonderful.
The POV: is entirely from Parker's point of view. Again, I wasn't sure at first, but it didn't bother me at any point. Surely it would be a wonderful thing to be inside King's head and experience what his feelings are like. But it wasn't missing here in this book.
The feelings: this is actually something that comes up a bit short in the writing. This book is extremely plot driven and even though you can sympathize with Parker and empathize with his situation and his past, this is not a book that is designed to be emotional.
Romance/sex?: hmm, a little, I would say. The tiny sex scenes are to the point, without much frills, but despite everything, the attraction the two have for each other is clear. At this point in the series, it does fit the characters. I hope there might be time for a date or two, that would be nice. But at the moment I can't really imagine it.
You shouldn't look for romance in this book. But Parker and King are constantly saving each other, so the basis is there.

“Was the morgue visit a date? Was that your idea of romance? Were you trying to seduce me with dead bodies?”
“No!” He laughed. “But it worked, didn’t it?”
“I almost died! You almost killed the guy you like!”
🙃🤡🙃

“Tell me there’s an elevator,” I said. “I’m walked out.”
Maybe we should add more cardio to your days.” Nick’s voice dripped with the implication of what kind of cardio he was interested in.
💞😳💞

“I’d ask where the tree came from, but then I’d have to ask about all the other trees,” Nick said. “Is it like an arborist thing? Are we going to have a tree growing in the bedroom?” 🌳🤭🌳

So, the book has exhausted me a bit and I think I need to read something else for now. But I'm exhausted in a happy way, my thanks to the author for tiring my head out in the best way possible ...

What I enjoyed:

.) the author’s world building and imagination! Quite impressive.

.) Parker is a very likeable character. I loved his magic and how he used it. The author throws a plethora of real problems at him, maybe a tad too much? It seems Parker’s life gets threatened for various reasons about every other chapter.

.) Nick is the sensible, morally sound counterpart to Parker and who wouldn’t love him? Parker and Nick kind of click like Ying and Yang. I’m looking forward to seeing how they’ll get on in the future.

.) Parker and Nick ‘working together’, which basically means throwing around awesome magic to avoid getting killed. Which happens a lot. Particularly to Parker.

What I found tricky:

.) This book is VERY, VERY busy:
Busy on characters, magical and human alike, busy on background information, busy on plot threads and busy on ideas. My head was spinning, and at times, I had no clue what was going on anymore. The plot gets so complex with so many side threads, I could have done with a diagram to get a better overview.

We do get what is going on in the end, but I couldn’t help shouting ‘too much’ quite a few times.

.) the lack of romance:
There is a lot of attraction between Parker and Nick, but to me the ‘boyfriend’ labelling came out of nowhere. The action-heavy plot is definitely at the centre of the book, with no real discernable relationship development. These guys like each other, fancy each other, hop into bed and then declare themselves boyfriends.

While this is all fine, more or less, I really would have liked a much bigger helping of feels all around. The sizzle is very moderate, too, and almost feels like a second thought (‘I really should add a hot scene here’), the bond between the men rather underplayed.

Of course, this is only book 1 in this series, and maybe we’ll get more of relationship stuff later on!

Final verdict: if you like magic, magical creatures like the werewolves, demons, the fae etc etc, and an action-packed plot, this is for you!
I probably will check out book 2 just because I’m nosy.

Wormwood Summer by Kai Butler has everything I could ever want. Great worldbuilding, a unique and interesting magic system, and complex character dynamics.

Butler manages to give equal attention to action, political maneuvering, and relationships.

Each action scene was well crafted with tension and had some really kick-ass fight sequences.

Parker has associations with a lot of groups; fae, witches, alchemists, wolf packs, and the police to name a few. Watching him interact with each group was really intriguing. They never give him a break 😂

Parker and Nick's romance was so good! They each had their own independant motivations and differing perspectives on how they approach situations. Can't wait to get more of them in the sequel.

An urban fantasy with probably every type of paranormal being, we follow PI Parker Ferro who seems to always be caught in the middle. Things come to a head, when all of his obligations lead him towards investigating who's draining supernatural creatures of their magic.

Throw in Detective Nicholas King and things get even more interesting. Working together, Parker has to decide if keeping his secrets is more important than his budding relationship with Nick.

I hate that cover picture, the previous books with that stock photo sucked for me so I tend to avoid books featuring that model, a weird issue to have but something I have nonetheless. Still I am shocked I read this book, I must have been bored out of my mind.

This book started out great, it reminded me of Patrick and Jono from A Ferry of Bones & Gold even the bit with the debt on his soul. Unfortunately it couldn't deliver like that series. The story lagged A LOT. Then the romance happened really fast, the mystery bored me quickly as well.

I am going to try book 2 in the hopes that it gets better.

Hah! 2 novellas done. Update time. 😅

I feel like crying. 😂 I hate how I started this and how I missed the opportunities to giggle and gush at the scene with the two MCs seeing each other again. I literally pulled my hair after finishing the novellas. 🤣

My perspective on their initial encounters in this book seriously shifted and now I can see it for what it was. Instead of barely tolerating each other to instant attraction, it was actually hidden affection from their first 2 encounters that was just simmering under the surface. It also explained why the romance felt too easy and familiar in a blink of an eye. I was missing pieces of information. And my goodness! THEY HAVE BEEN FLIRTING SINCE THEIR MEET-CUTE. Ugh. I hate this. 🤣

Anyway, as I've said I love the world-building, fantasy tales, and magic. Especially how the author incorporated a lot of 'bending realities' into fae magic. Nick felt like a supporting character more than a romantic interest most of the time but it made sense with the way Parker's destiny was unfolding. Plus, Parker's such a train wreck that is STILL happening and trouble just follows him everywhere. 😂 I am also weak when it comes to sentient houses and this one has it! So, bonus! 😍

Overall, I was honestly fine with this work being 80% adventure and 20% romance because the plot was very interesting on its own. Reading the novellas just gave me satisfaction in a way that it gave me knowledge on why Nick was very lenient and fond of Parker, and everything he did for Parker in this book was a testament to that like/love that has grown from their very limited but memorable interactions. ❤❤❤

__________

Okay. Rate and review to be determined. The adventure and fantasy plot was great but the romance was underwhelming and I just found out that it was because their meet-cute was in a novella! Ugh. That explains the references I'm missing and why the development seemed too easy. Anyway, be right back. 🤭

Wow!

I love everything about this book! It’s got magic and adventure and mystery and as an added bonus it has significant LGBTQ+ representation! The ending was jaw-dropping and then the setup for the next book in the series was spot on perfect! 5 ginormous stars!

Following is obviously no review but a remark from someone who at this time read the complete series but still remembers an issue I had with this book: don't let the author's decision to let the actual first meeting of Parker and Nick happen before the start of the series dissuade you from following San Amaro Investigation. It didn't much like that fact because I usually enjoy the sexual tension, the flirty insecurity, the awkward defenses and all those other delicious vibrations you can get from an opposites-attract. Yes, we get some of it because it's still no love-at-first-sight but most of the get-to-know is already done and therefore the first kiss is unexpected for the reader.

If you like paranormal mysteries with different beings, romance and found family, with a bit machination and snark as well as friendly fun and a big battle at the end of each book, then don't think too much about that mistake because as soon as you accept this jolty start there's a lot also in the romance part that compensates.

Reread 3.5-4 stars

This read was so much more enjoyable than the first go around.

Can’t wait for book two!

3-3.5 stars

okay when i saw this got an audiobook i went so fast to audible to see who narrated it and it was a shock to see Greg Tremblay (aka Boudreaux) was the narrator so you best believe i one clicked that.

I think going in to this book you need to read the 0.5 and 0.75 novellas, i didn't and it felt as though it was hinted at throughout the book which made me feel like i was missing something big. it was also the start of Nick and Parker, how they met and what happened. While i didn't read those first two books i think that is why i didn't give this a higher rating than a 3.

Overall it was a good start to a series, but knowing what i do about fae from other books this book didn't follow some of the "rules" that they are suppose to follow but it is authors liberties since they are the one bringing these worlds to life.

I would recommend reading the first two novellas before this one if you want to enjoy this story but it can be read without it, you will be a tad confused like i was but overall you will still enjoy it.

"Wormwood Summer", being the first full volume of the San Amaro Investigations-Series by Kai Butler has several of the things I like the most. m/m Romance with two appealing characters, a new and diverse paranormal world/setting, a criminal plot that actually really was suspense-ful and solid, non-fuzzy writing without cheese.

I listened to the Audio book. The narrator Greg Tremblay, who was new to me (even though I found out he has really been involved in a large number of audiobooks before), was surprisingly good. I definitely want to hear more by him. As I plan to continue the series and he seems to be the narrator for the next volumes as well, my wish is apparently coming true.

First things first, this is the 2nd book I'm reading by this author and I have to say that their writing style is solid. Their story-telling might need some tweaking though from a very good editor. It felt at times long-winded with no reason.

Second if I'm reading Fantasy, Urban-Fantasy, PNR or SPN, I NEED WORLD-BUILDING!!! I need info given to me in tasteful doses so I can retain a portion of it. Here there's very, very little and most had to do with what Parker or Nick were doing at the moment. Time wise I guess it could be present time but it was never explicitly mentioned. The how and whys of magic, fae, werewolves, alchemists, witches, warlocks, vampires and zombies were totally missing and/or what was mentioned was confusing as hell because there was no explanation or more info given. For example:

"...'Some vampires are still mentally acute, but they've lost the ability to speak,' Nick said..."
"...The thing was, some vamps could blend. It seemed to depend on how long they'd been alive, but I wasn't an expert..."

So what do I understand from this? Are vampires made and go crazy or lose mental capacity little by little as the years go by because they are long lived? Are they born? They can blend if they are long lived? Meaning they gain mental capacity? This is so confusing!

Third which can be connected with the 2nd point, Parker is supposed to be powerful, but by which standards? Human magic or Fae magic? Is he as powerful as Thistle was portrayed to be and not able to use the magic like him because of his limited teachings?

Fourth Nick and Parker's relationship. @33% (chapter 24) Parker says that Nick was he's type and too good to bother with the likes of him. It felt like I was missing a part of the story I should know, and only after I reached the end of the book I found out that there's a prequel of how Nick and Parker met.
@51% (chapter 21) The use the term Boyfriend for the first time. For 2 people that only before had met while working, never went on a date and had sex a couple of times, isn't labeling what they are like that a bit premature?
@55% (chapter 23) "... He didn't seem like a guy who'd follow the three-day rule..." Parker thought about Nick. They already said they are boyfriends, so isn't that out of the window?

Despite that though I did love Parker with Nick. They were good together (although not so much explosive on the chemistry department) and they balance each other. Parker's moral compass becomes a bit straighter and he's growing as a person and Nick unbends a bit.

Lastly the mystery and the action. They were both very well done although given the same amount of info as Parker, I figured at the 55% who the culprit was and put it better together than Parker did when caught by the Five Dragons which he's explanation and piecing everything together to Torres was sounding a bit thin to me and not substantiated.

Anyways it was a really good read, with some points being slow and some growing pains but I'll definitely keep reading this series!

I received an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.

These types of stories are like catnip to me! An emotionally stunted, straight laced LEO paired with someone who does not play by the book at all, within a fantastical world of some sort? I’m so there. I was a huge fan of Butler’s debut series, and now it’s just been sealed that I will probably be the first in line for all their new releases. I loved the different magic systems here, the awesome worldbuilding, the witty banter, and of course the romance. From beginning to end this book had me completely captivated and I absolutely cannot wait for the next one in the series.

Well, this was brilliant and utterly addictive.
I'm so glad I finally gave this series a chance: I can already see myself devouring the next few books.

"Wormowood Summer" is everything I usually look for, and love, in an urban fantasy romance, and then some: apart from the absolutely lovely writing, it has both an absolutely unforgettable cast of characters, both main and secondary, and a gorgeous and ridiculously fascinating world-building.
Seriously, I've never seen something even resembling what Kai Butler has managed to create, and achieve, with her words: the complex world-building, and all the magical and monstrous figures that populate it, is fantastic and vividly depicted and the magic system, particularly the way Parker's (and the fae's) magic works is so damn interesting and fascinating.

And, cherry on the cake, the characters were equally unforgettable: I've read reviews of this series stating that the MC and the world-builing and story premise is quite similar to Hailey Turner's "Soulbound" series, but I couldn't disagree more.
There are some similarities, but I'm pretty sure that's typical of all modern day UF stories; plus, I thought Parker was completely different from Patrick. Parker Ferro is a mess, yes, and he's damaged and reckless, but he's also secretly insecure and unsure, afraid of being left by the people he loves; he's a disastrous, barely functioning adult, and a huge snarky and playful flirt as well. And he's also a sneaky, dangerous, manipulative liar and I absolutely adored how well all of his facets managed to blend together to create a complex, flawed but deeply lovable character.

On the other hand, Nick's a bit of mystery: his straight-laced, overly prim attitude was adorable, and I loved seeing him lose his cool around Parker, and his reckless tendencies. I can't wait to discover more of him, and his uber powerful, mysterious family.

Their romance is another aspect of the book that's still a bit of a mystery. Again, I've seen reviewers complain about how insta-love their relationship was, and again, I'm not sure I agree: I think their pacing was completely in tune with the story, especially considering how minor the romance aspect was for this first book and the fact that both Parker and Nick have a bit of a history. I think reading the two novellas/short stories focused on the previous cases they worked on together was hugely beneficial, and I'd recommend it for any reader planning on starting this series: those two novellas gave their relationship enough backstory to make it even more credible, less insta-love and more slow-burn-ish.
Anyway, I loved them together and I can't wait to see their dynamic play out a bit more.

I'm so damn excited to continue with this series: I feel like I've finally found that gem of a series that will keep be occupied, and obsessed, for the foreseeable future.

I’ve been on this quest to find new authors lately and I’ve just been randomly picking up stuff off of Kindle Unlimited. I’ve been very lucky and found a few I really enjoyed. This was one of them.

It’s a super interesting UF world about Parker, who is fae and a PI and Nick, who is an alchemist and a cop. In this book they try to found what/who is draining the magic out of paranormal beings. Plus, Parker has some other issues like his foster mom haunting people and a shifter pack trying to kill him.

It was fast paced and entertaining and I liked all the characters. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series

Pairing: a private investigator and a detective.

This urban fantasy has the usual elements of fae, werewolves, vampires, demons, witches and alchemists, but I think it manages to spin a fresh take out of it. The way Parker, our PI, does his magic is pretty unique. Contrasted to the rigidity of our detective / alchemist, they make an interesting couple.

I was a bit thrown off when their romance seems to start out of nowhere. I understand where the connection is coming from now, after I read the prequel novellas. The choice to put the introduction of our main couple to each other in prequels seems an odd one. I certainly wouldn't be as convinced with their romance had I not read these prequels. I get that there are already many elements going on, but I'd still rather see their romance development in this book, instead of the side stories.

This is certainly an interesting start of a series. Can't wait to see how this develops.

3,5* for now

I'm so goddamn torn about this rating! There are so many things I loved about this book - Parker, the main character, is an absolute blast to read about, I love him (if I were to describe him in one word, he's such a Slytherin). I adored all the magic and world-building, the pacing is also really good.

BUT. The budding relationship between Parker and Nick? I felt like I suddenly appeared in the middle of their story... and what do you know, I did! This series has two prequel novellas GR doesn't have listed here, so fair warning - you probably should read those first. I'm gonna read them for sure, but I'm still really disappointed I didn't know about them before reading this, because... These two as a couple left me completely indifferent, I didn't feel their connection. Possibly because I wasn't there for their beginning? We shall see.

Also, this book really deserves some editing, sometimes the errors and typos pulled me from the story in an annoying way.

I definitely want to continue with this series, so here's to hoping I'll grow to love this couple with time... If not, I'm here for Parker Ferro and the chaos that seems to follow him everywhere.

WORMWOOD SUMMER was so much fun! Filled with action, lots of magic, a really cute romance, and an interesting world. Parker was a great narrator, he's irreverent, easy going, but also a bit of a mess. I always enjoy worlds where paranormal beings are just a regular part of society, but I thought it was a fun twist that Fae are so feared and disliked; all of this meaning that Parker had to hide his Fae magic.

Throughout the book Parker gains new insight into who he is, including his magic. And I enjoyed the moments where Parker had to fight between doing the right thing and giving into the more conniving nature of the Fae. He didn’t always make the right choice and I'm hoping Butler will explore this struggle more as Parker grows alongside his powers. I also really enjoyed the way Butler described Parker's magic and how he communicated with the spirits that inhabited all parts of the natural world. There was a lot in the worldbuilding to grab onto and I can't wait to get more in future books.

As for the romance, Parker and Nick were great together and I adored the way Nick was always trying to take care of Parker. The by-the-book Detective had his hands full with Parker who was the opposite of a rule follower. I highly recommend reading the prequel, A HAUNTING AT MIDWINTER, because its where Parker and Nick actually met and shared their first kiss.

There were a few things that didn't land as strongly for me: the plot is a bit overly complicated and Parker seemed very unrushed considering all the deadlines and obligations he was under. And the handling of Parker's physically non-responsive foster mother toward the end was incredibly neglectful and included some insensitive terms. Those things aside, this was an interesting start to a series and I can't wait to read more about Parker, Nick, and their adventures.

So we have Parker, who we really didn't know what he was, but find out in this book, who has been tasked with finding a missing girl. On top of that, Nick shows up looking for help in the deaths of victims who have been drained of their magic. Nick is a staunch alchemist and basically if it doesn't deal with alchemistry then it doesn't exist. I do like that we see him grow in his beliefs of what is going on. Anyway Parker gets into trouble when he is trying to prove for his client that her boyfriend is cheating on her. Well what he doesn't know is that he is going to be pulled into the middle of the police investigation. Parker is way over his head in this one & is put into major danger. The mystery was well written, and very complicated. I pretty much has some of it figured out, but not all. There were some really good surprises. I enjoyed watching Nick to unbend his stiff rules and tunnel vision & start to see that there is more out there. Parker seeing that there is more than one way to get things done. I think that Parker & Nick complements each other very well. I can't wait to see what trouble these two get into going forward.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

Wormwood Summer is the first book in Kai Butler’s new San Amaro Investigations series and it is off to a great start. I have been on a big urban fantasy kick lately, so I was eager to try this new-to-me author. I think where this story really shines is in the creative world building. This is a vast supernatural world, with all sorts of paranormal beings, including werewolves, vampires, incubi, and more. But the main focus here is on the magic users, and this world seems to have three types: witches, alchemists, and fae. There is a level of mistrust and dislike among the three, with everyone wary of the fae, and the alchemists and witches sort of battling for whose approach to magic is the right one.

The story is told from Parker’s POV and this feels like mostly his journey. We know from the start that Parker has fae magic, but just how that all came about is revealed over the course of the book. We also learn that he had a rough past, including living in foster care, and so he is not very confident in his relationship with Nick.

Well that was a whole lot of fun. I love Parker. He's just a great character. He's trapped in between a lot of different elements in this story and it's touch and go whether he can navigate his way through it without pissing off any one faction. Of course, he's also go one hot alchemist detective coming around as well.

This story kicked off with a bang and really never stopped. This is a great first novel for a series. I'm attached to Parker and Nick and can't wait to learn more about them, because it's clear nothing's ever going to be easy for them. But as much as Parker seems to think that his fae nature makes him not to be trusted and a bad guy, it's clear in reality he's got his own set of standards and morays that he won't violate. While the romance itself feels a little rushed (and would have felt more so if you haven't read the prequel story from the author) ultimately I really like the connection between Nick and Parker. They're a good balance for each other. Parker may live a little too in the grey for Nick and Nick might follow a few too many rules for Parker, but they have fun together.

I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.

This was very enjoyable! It’s an interesting world, for sure. And it’s nice that we get to learn about it without a lot of telling. Always happy to have that than an info-dump.

I don’t know how to describe this. It’s a lot of paranormal creatures in one place. Also a lot of excitement from the get go. Not sure I get why Nick and Parker click as they seem to have met offbook. I’m happy to know there’s a novella of their first meeting. So perhaps that will answer things.

All in all, a very enjoyable read. Looking forward to the next book!
