I killed a man to protect my sisters, and now I am a fugitive. With bounty hunters hot on my trail- willing to take me dead or alive- I'm forced to disguise myself as a cabin boy on the Bella Donna. I should have been safe at sea, but I cannot escape the dangerous feelings evoked by the ship's handsome captain.
For I am Merisol, one of the adoptive daughters of Lady Eville, and to escape my past and save my friends I will make an uncertain bargain with a shady sea witch. The deal sounds too good to be true. What could possibly go wrong?

The director clapped his hands, fumbling with his clipboard at the same time. First day of shooting and my back was already dripping with sweat, harsh lights beat down on the rest of the actors, highlighting their features with a beam of shine. Ugh, I sighed, I was already tired.

"So" the director began, "this whole movie will be based on The Little Mermaid" he paused for emphasis, gaining a little applause from the workers "all of you know of the story, I assume. Mermaid gets emotionally traumatized by dad, starts talking to fish and stares at a man she saved from drowning, therefore causing him to fall inventively and unconditionally in love. Despite only having a day or two to get to know each other. We all know, that's adorable." The man chuckled while all of us stood there, trying to make sense of his words "The whole thing will be changed in its entirety and new forms of speech will be implemented directly unto the storyline- yes?" His head swiveled to face me as my hand arose in question.

"What do you mean by changing and adding new forms of speech?" I asked, my frown making itself visible. It was a fairy tale. How much more speech things could it have added to it?

The director's face flushed a deep red, not unlike the wig that someone had positioned on my scalp. "Well, we need to transport the watchers of the movie to a whole new world, think America's Top Model in olden fantasy days. Just without the models. Or the America." His voice continued on, regardless of the spaced-out look of the cast nearby.
"We need all of you to use the words 'for' in the sense of 'for her knew what he was doing', at least a minimum of five times per scene" This statement drew confused glances in between the actors, including me. Ooookay, I thought. Not that weird. Use 'for' a lot. Got it.

"You" He pointed at me, directly staring into my eyes. Um... was he going to steal my soul-"since you're the protagonist, I'll need you to mention the fact that you have red hair, curves and a feminine figure in the voice-over, thirteen times per scene, so everyone knows how conceited and self-absorbed you are." I started nodding, thinking that the request was strange but not all that out of this world.

The director pushed on, listing things all of us should hold close while acting.
"Hey you, you're the love interest, I want you to declare your love in as many words as possible" The guy that was supposed to play the part of the fated romantic point, nodded, not really paying attention.
"The villain, yes you. Who else? Well, I want you to use overdramatic forms of expressing yourself, is that understood? I want everyone to feel uncomfortable once you open your mouth." A middle-aged lady in a flannel shirt grumbled in reply.
"The rest of you" The director pointed once again to the extras "do whatever feels better for your role, just remember the three rules, use 'for' a lot,  describe yourself quite a bit, and don't forget, always look for the most awkward wording possible,"

"This is going to be a rather short section because the romance will happen overnight" The director announced while we were having out makeup done. "We don't want the whole movie to be the set up, we want for them to meet, hate each other for six scenes and confess their love by scene seven." He wrung his hands nervously. "We need to make this the epitome of Romeo and Juliette but a more intense and less death-y version. Any questions?"
All of us shook our heads in unison. The instructions seemed easy enough.

The instructions weren't easy.

There was silence on the set after my acted outburst. Solemn and awaiting for the cursory weight to drop. Everyone leaned forward to catch more of the performance, breaths held aloft like a feather. Then a giggle escaped my lips and soon I was holding unto my stomach for fear of cackling wildly because oh goodness, never had I uttered a more cheesy life in my entire acting career. The workers on the set started laughing as well, my costars sniffing back tears at the exaggerated confession of my supposed love. Holy mermaid shells, this was going to be a long day.

Now, because I literally exceeded whatever that's up there, I shall touch on the characters because come on, ranting is a way of living.

The MC... well, I sincerely don't know what's up with her. I think she was supposed to go into this humongous character ARC but somehow got into the wrong bus and ended up in the 'too weak to do anything' city. I still cannot find any reason to like her, apart from wanting her hair as my own. At times it felt like she was a growing toddler the size of a peanut (brain size considered into that as well) and that she was unaware of the fact that a personality didn't rain from the ocean. Get it? Ocean? Mermaids? Heheh. Overall, I still don't know what she was supposed to be acting at, her every decision was horrible and the one time she showed promise for redemption, another BAM, gone down the toilet.

I trust myself in saying that the rest of the characters were good. Not great, but like, meh. Minus the love interest but frankly, I can describe him easily:
- Thinks being a jerk is cute.
- Thinks being 7 feet tall is God's gift to humanity.
- And thinks owning people is so hot and worthy of adoration.
- Oh! And of course, he was lost potential. So much.

The one guy that made all the suffering of my soul worth it, unfortunately got taken off the movie as his presence was a balm to the open wound of *swinging hands wildly* this thing. He shall forever be missed and always loved. I still think it was such a dumb decision-

The rest of the cast was there for entertainment purposes only, fun to look at, quite forgettable in the long run. High five for those in the back! I may forget you, but you still exist. I think.

Putting myself in the shoes of the person who chose to read this book, I must say that the plot was well developed. However, once again, SO. MUCH. POTENTIAL. Pirates, mermaids, sea witches, handsome prince with rogue tendencies, strong MC, lovable side characters, hate to romance. *sigh* This saddened me more than you would think. I liked how the setting and the worldbuilding were explained, at least the places we visited were worth the brain bleaching I forced myself to take when reading the 'lovey dovey lines'. I adored the mermaids, even though some were carnivorous (I liked them more that way, not going to lie), appreciated the subtle mentions of other fantastical creatures which lightened the load I was supposed to bear throughout it all. Hands down, the best thing out of the story. Although come on, plot twists? They don't exist here. Unless you count the end and I was simply irritated with that.

On a closing note, this book was fun. I can admit that. It was like watching a train wreck but being unable to turn away from the wreckage. I came into this not even expecting anything really. I was like, book! I shall read it. Synopsis? Super interesting. Outcome? Hmm. Maybe worth it? I liked how the MC tried to be something other than useless thus failing at that. The overdramatic scenes just made me wheeze excessively so, point for you? I hope that the next book is worth a whole entire day of reading because Aura is one of the dumbest, weakest protagonist I have ever heard about and her story intrigues me for the sole reason of roasting shenanigans.

I'm sorry but no. If a book makes me laugh when someone is about to die, I don't think that's a good indicator for it. Or me, as a matter of fact.

I have a soul, I just don't like using it, sue me.

Weeeell I have so many questions. Meri's character has so much power and potential but she didn't grow as much as I wanted her to. I hope a book comes out and all of the sisters join forces to fight Allemar.

I really enjoyed this one. So far I've loved all the books in the series. It's such a fun and romantic take on classic fairytales. This is the only one I listened to the audio instead of reading. It is the only one I could get as and audio from my library. It's to bad because I actually really enjoyed this narrator. But I will still continue this series I'll just be reading it. :)

3rd book in the Daughters of Eville series! Incredible retelling. Multiple love triangles. This one has you rooting for fmc’s love story. I love the finding the love of their families in these stories so much. Fun plot twists! I adore the happy endings!

’But hope isn’t a sign of being naïve. It’s belief that we can change our circumstances.’

I wasn’t planning to write a review here, but the end has forced me to! The majority of the book, though entertaining, was largely generic - as a result, i felt I had little to say on it.
That being said, the end of the book completely threw me, and I absolutely adored the ties with the undersea, overland and Hahn’s version of Ursula.

Brennon’s determination, though odd at times, was admirable and different to the love interests from the previous books - though as a pattern in Hahn’s series here, the relationship did seem quite sudden which took away from the story a little. Another small dislike was his lust - though nothing explicit happened, I’d have preferred more of a slow burn romance, particularly while he was in an arranged engagement already (just personal preference).

Vasili was by far my favourite character! His wit and charm was initially suspicious, but Hahn’s elaboration on his backstory and motivations meant that one simply can’t help but love him. With regards to that, the end was completely heart wrenching :((

I also enjoyed a closer look into Lady Eville herself, of which seems to occur more and more with each book in the series. While I’d like to have know a little more about the undersea itself along with (no spoilers) the twins involved in that, I’m hoping it could come in a further instalment.

As a whole, there were a few aspects in the magic and kind of in the content that I wasn’t a fan of, but I must say the ending had me hooked! It certainly goes well having read the other books, but it would work as a stand-alone too. There's just something about the Daughters of Eville series that just makes you keep reading, no matter how you're feeling about it at the time haha :)

This is something I’d say most need to hear, but particularly resonated with me: “But what if I fail?” “Oh, darling, but what if you succeed?’

I am loving these books more than I thought I would. I love Disney and these books have some things that relate to Disney but a completely different story. I had been listening to them on audible but had to switch to also reading it because I had to know what happened next! Can’t wait to read the next one!

Of Sea and Song is a retelling of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen and it is one of the best retellings I've read to date. It was suspenseful and the romance aspect did not take over the story... I don't read romances for a reason. The ending I believe sets up the next book but I wasn't sure what it was referring to so I must have missed something from book one or two. That said, I very likely will go back and read (or listen to) the first two books, I enjoyed this one that much.

The story of this one was captivating. This world gets better and better with greater magic the longer I spend in it! I found myself trying to puzzle out all the twists and turns when I wasn't reading it. My issue lies with the romance in this one. I just didn't connect with it, too insta-love, nothing against either Brennon or Meri, I enjoyed both of their characters and their development through the story.

DESCRIPTION

Sooo if you didnt know from the title, this is a Little mermaid retelling. There's our fierce main female protagonist, Merisol.
And there's our main male protagonist, Brennon and the other main male protagonist, Vasili. So I cant tell anything about Brennon because it would be a *HUGE* spoiler, which is here so DONT CLICK if you havent read the books. But Vasili is a Pirate. So Meri kills this guy who was misbehaving with her sister, Aura, by accident. So all the normal folks hire hunters and come to the Eville residency (Made that up, ignore me lol), and threatens to kill Meri. And just then, Lady Eville HAPPENED to be at a different place on an adventure or something. So Meri takes off from her house to divert the hunters from taking her sisters's attention. And that's when she begins her adventure.

MY THOUGHTS
First off, I have to say this. These are just MY opinions and that doesnt mean you will like or dont like this book. You can compare your opinions with mine but if they dont match, boohoo no comments.

Ok let's start with the cons

Cringe fest

Yeeeeeeaaaaahhhhhh, too much sugar for my taste, sorry. Not elaborating.

Only brief description on world building

I expected more! This world had so much potential. A sea world and a Sky? Come on that's my dream world. But like the theory that a Daughter of the sea should marry the sky king and all those stuff. Are you kidding me. You couldve said WHY this happens. The author DID actually say why but it was so brief and so cringe worthy. So no, I didnt like that.

Slow Pacing at first
Those hunters just made it worse, Meri was constantly only running from them at first that I got bored. So bored that I didnt take the book for like a week.

The writing style was...Ok

I mean I like Chanda's writing style, sure, but this book just...Idk why but I didnt feel the salt in the air. And I wanted to FEEL stuff. But that might be because I was so stressed by school so it's neither a Pro, nor a con.

Now let's look at those Pros

AMAZING character Development

There was SO much character development for Merri. She went from "Some Soceress" to (P.S. HUGE SPOILER). That was amazing. I love me some good characters.

The storyline was great

I loved how the author took the story. I guessed half of it yet I was hooked to the storyline. For example, I loved the Dagger part, though I found it earlier . And the tension between Brennon and Vasili was great.

I loved how Allemar played a part in it. It's not spoiler because it's obvious. What did you expect, Eden let him out. I liked how Velora played a vital part in the story and liked all those side characters like Fang. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the part where Rosalie shows her daughter, her name is Violet!!!!

So that's it for the review, I loved this book, so TRY IT IF YOU LOVE FOOD!!!!!!!

Read this review on my blog!

1. Of Beast and Beauty ⭐⭐⭐⭐
2. Of Glass and Glamour ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Of Sea and Song is definitely my favorite Daughters of Eville book so far. This one dives into the extraordinary tale of Meri, who, following a tragic accident, has to flee home. Eventually she ends up disguised as a boy on a pirate ship, embarking on a great adventure, making a deal with a shady sea witch, and falling in love. Why did no one warn me of this before hand? Pirates are amazing!

The plot of this was simply amazing. In the very beginning, we get a glimpse into the world of the sisters and what they have to deal with in their small town. Then there were a couple of epic chases, some pirates, mermaids, and sirens... what else do I have to say?

Oh, and the romance! While the couples in the first two books felt very forced, with arrogant and rude boys, the love interest in this was a lot better. Sure, he was a little possessive, but when he and Meri were together they were so cute. I both loved and hated how they kept baiting each other, if that makes sense.

I love these books so much. They're fun and quick reads, about sisters who have the cutest relationship. I can't wait to see more adventures in Of Thorn and Thread. (Why do I have to wait until December?! 💔💔💔)

Outstanding. Magnificent. Spectacular. Brilliant. I absolutely loved Meri's story and wish it could go on forever. I am not sure how Chanda Hahn does it, but each book is better than the last. I felt like I couldn't read this book fast enough. It was so easy to get lost in this world and wish I could escape here more often. I think Chanda Hahn is such a talented and remarkable author. Her writing style is one of my favorites, she has an innate ability to create a story that is easy to follow. Her descriptions help me paint a picture in my head of a breathtaking world and amazing characters. I liked how Chanda took a different approach on how Meri left Nihill, compared to the previous two books. I thoroughly enjoyed the many twists throughout the story, as they kept me glued to the book.

In this book we follow Meri, who runs away to protect her sisters after an unfortunate incident. Word starts to spread of her being on the run and wanted by the Brunes Guild. Brennon helps Meri escape from the wrath of the Brunes Guild. However, she isn't sure if she can trust him and escapes before he notices. But what she doesn't realize is that her path with Brennon will eventually cross again. In this story, we learn about Meri, her magical abilities, and her ties to the sea. There were times in the book, especially towards the end where my heart broke for both her and Brennon. I loved the ending and wish it could go on forever.

***4.5 stars***

Of Sea and Song is definitely my favorite of the Daughters of Eville books so far. I will always love anything with pirates, mermaids, sirens, and the sea in it, so this won my heart almost instantly.

The Characters. With each book, the characters just get better and better! I loved Meri more than Rosalie or Eden. She was so much fun, I felt so bad for her, and she was perfect. We got to see more of Aura, who I love, and the new love interest was the best yet. Brennon was better than Xander, or even Dorian, although he still wasn't the best. Just a little bit to controlling. Then there was Vasili. Okay, Vasili was my favorite. Why couldn't she have fallen in love with Vasili? They were cute best friends, but they would have been and even cuter couple!!!

The Plot. One thing I truly loved about this book, was that Meri set out on the adventure because of her own doings, not because Lady Eville had arranged a marriage for her. I mean, the reasons she had to leave were terrible and sad, but at least she did it on her own accord. It was a little predictable, as they all are, but since it is a retelling, I already kind of knew what was going to happen.

I want Of Thorn and Thread so bad! We finally get to have Aura's story!!! It needs to come out like, right now. I want it so bad!!!

This storyline began differently than the previous two books and I am glad for change of scenery. While the previous two daughters/sisters were sent to their kingdoms by Lady Eville, Meri left her home tower and began the story "on the run". While protecting her sister Aura from some nasty men who wanted to do some nasty things, Meri unintentionally kills one and feels she must runaway to save her sisters from the villagers wrath. I liked the idea that Meri made this decision on her own and she wasn't blindly following her mother's orders. Actually, Lady Eville was pretty absent from this story due to being with Rosalie and her new baby... Meri was quite on her own and I appreciated that.

A little bit of a slow start(that’s why it has 4 stars) but it picked up FAST. The characters in this one developed so well and the story was honestly told perfectly. The author makes the villain so hated that I felt real anger towards her. So entertaining and a fun love story. That ending put tears in my eyes and I was giddy.

I always know I am getting a good book from this author. I am going to say that these books have become my favorite and I can't wait for each book. I think Mari's story is just as good as the other two. I liked the way this story went. I am glad she didn't get sent to a place but left on her own and we see how strong she is and her struggles with trying to start fresh. She struggles with her inner deamons that say she is a bad person even when she did what she did to protect. I think we all have done that. As a boy on the ship.. Priceless.. I was invested in that trip. I never knew where this book was going to go. I had a ideal and then it would go a different direction. I sure didn't see coming. The end was the best. Jaw dropping. I was so beside myself I am waiting on a friend to read so I can OMG her about the end. I know Lady Eville has to have some niceness in her but the other two doesn't show it as much. This book had her a bit softer. I guess you would say. Everyone Mom's differently. Seeing her sisters, although for only a little bit, was a joy. Getting to know them just a little before each book is great. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this book. I am leaving out the romance in this book. I don't want to spoil it for anyone and feel if I speak of a few things it will give them all away. Read this book. Best summer read

This book started off quite slow—I mean it was kind of awful to get through at first. Although I did quite like the storyline, but some of the things that happened in the book were quite fast and didn’t make much sense to me. But I persevered and I did actually quite like the ending. The storyline is now progressing into the other books in the series which I actually quite like, and even though some of the writing is a bit unbearable I cannot wait the read more of the series. I recommend trying out this series, it’s actually not too bad when you get a few books into it.

I'm surprised to say it because the Little Mermaid is one of my least favorite fairytales, but this was my favorite one so far. The kingdoms of Isla and the Undersea were the most interesting so far, and I really enjoyed the fact that Meri wasn't sent by Lady Eville. Meri is, so far, the most memorable of her sisters, and both Vasili and Brennon are great characters. The differences between this and the actual Little Mermaid story were different enough to make this much more interesting.

Of Sea and Song, is book 3 of the Daughters or Eville series. In this book we follow Merisol, aka Meri.
Meri’s story is riveting and it is definitely a page turner! This series truly gets better and better. It was good. So many unexpected twist and turns!! Be ready to ride a fun rollercoaster ride. So much happens that I honestly couldn’t guess where the author was going next. We meet so many great characters like Brennon, Lad, Vasili, and Howland.
If you love mermaid/siren stories check this book out! Find out if the Sea is as dangerous as they claim she can be. Dive into Of Sea and Song and read Merisol’s story. You won’t regret it.

True rating is somewhere around 3.5-3.8. The retelling aspect of this book was the best so far. This one felt more like a reimagined Little Mermaid retelling. The love story in the one was well done as well. I think so far, my favorite couple is still Eden and Dorian (from the previous book).

This book solidifies that these are not standalone novels, especially after the epilogue. The plot with Allemar thickens and I'm very intrigued about his revenge plans. I do think it was weird to have the epilogue be in Allemar's POV when it's the only time there's a POV switch.

Meri was a perfect little mermaid. She is protective of her sisters and kills a boy who is trying to rape her sister. But unfortunately, since she is a daughter of Evil and the boy was the mayor's son, she is on the run to save her life. She runs into Brennon first while trying to flee. He helps her escape, but since she is afraid he is only helping her so he can later turn her in and claim the bounty on her head, she sneaks away from him. Only to wind up on his ship as the new cabin boy. She isn't as doubtful of herself as Eden was. Yes, she admits that Rosalie is the strongest, but she is confident in her gift of water magic and song. She has a fiery personality and I loved getting to know her in this book.

Brennon was the only man I could see Meri being with. He was the only one who seemed adept at handling her fire and able to put up with her. His jealousy came across comical in this book, it wasn't done in a way that no man could talk to her, just when she would flirt to make a point it came out.

After both Baist and Candor being kingdoms that were anti-magic, it was nice to read about Isla that welcomed magic. There was no prejudice against magic or magical beings. Isla was closely connected to the Undersea and welcomed all kinds of new magical creatures such as selfies, undines, mermaids, etc. House elves were mentioned once and seemed to be treated far better than in Candor.

Since Meri ran away, I feel like the plot of this one was better developed in that Lady Eville didn't send Meri to enact revenge. I appreciated that fact about this book a lot better than the previous books. Lady Eville is a character who I find intriguing and want to know more of her backstory, but I don't think she gives her daughters a lot of direction to set her revenge plan into motion.

I alternated with reading and listening to this one. The narrator did a good job, no complaints about her. In my reading I did notice a few grammatical errors, but nothing too distracting that I found it a challenge to get through. At this point I'm invested in the story and want to see what happens next. Once I finish the series will determine if I find it worth recommending. All depends on how it ends.

This has been my favorite storyline so far. Even though many of the plot was easy to guess in the beginning.
I loved Meri’s relationship with Brennen to be good. I like how the author added many of the events from the original Little Mermaid but with the retelling with the characters given.
The epilogue though?!? I did not see that coming and am anxious with how that plays out later in the series.

It was fun. Super fast and easy to get through. I still think I like the second one better but this was still enjoyable. I really liked the spin off of the little mermaid. I’m really excited for the next one even though it’s probably about my least favorite sister in the bunch.

Amazing retelling of Little Mermaid. I appreciate the homages given to the Disney version while keeping with mythology and twisting it into its own beautiful story that ties in with the previous two.

This book had my favorite version of The Undersea that I've read- sorry, Holly Black. I loved the pirate and mermaid vibes, and once again my BIGGEST win for this series is that is has characters that are strong THROUGH their femininity. No need to act "not like other girls" or tomboy-ish. These are women who know their strengths and continue to grow them throughout the book, learning that they were stronger than they ever even knew.

I felt so bad for the mermaid daughters :(
