About the author

Hans Fallada, born Rudolf Wilhelm Adolf Ditzen in Greifswald, was one of the most famous German writers of the 20th century. His novel, Little Man, What Now? is generally considered his most famous work and is a classic of German literature. Fallada's pseudonym derives from a combination of characters found in the Grimm fairy tales: The protagonist of Lucky Hans and a horse named Falada in The Goose Girl.

He was the child of a magistrate on his way to becoming a supreme court judge and a mother from a middle-class background, both of whom shared an enthusiasm for music and to a lesser extent, literature. Jenny Williams notes in her biography, More Lives than One that Fallada's father would often read aloud to his children the works authors including Shakespeare and Schiller (Williams, 5).

In 1899 when Fallada was 6, his father relocated the family to Berlin following the first of several promotions he would receive. Fallada had a very difficult time upon first entering school in 1901. As a result, he immersed himself in books, eschewing literature more in line with his age for authors including Flaubert, Dostoyevsky, and Dickens. In 1909 the family relocated to Leipzig following his father's appointment to the Imperial Supreme Court.

A rather severe road accident in 1909 (he was run over by a horse-drawn cart, then kicked in the face by the horse) and the contraction of typhoid in 1910 seem to mark a turning point in Fallada's life and the end of his relatively care-free youth. His adolescent years were characterized by increasing isolation and self-doubt, compounded by the lingering effects of these ailments. In addition, his life-long drug problems were born of the pain-killing medications he was taking as the result of his injuries. These issues manifested themselves in multiple suicide attempts. In 1911 he made a pact with his close friend, Hanns Dietrich, to stage a duel to mask their suicides, feeling that the duel would be seen as more honorable. Because of both boys' inexperience with weapons, it was a bungled affair. Dietrich missed Fallada, but Fallada did not miss Dietrich, killing him. Fallada was so distraught that he picked up Dietrich's gun and shot himself in the chest, but miraculously survived. Nonetheless, the death of his friend ensured his status as an outcast from society. Although he was found innocent of murder by way of insanity, from this point on he would serve multiple stints in mental institutions. At one of these institutions, he was assigned to work in a farmyard, thus beginning his lifelong affinity for farm culture.

While in a sanatorium, Fallada took to translation and poetry, albeit unsuccessfully, before finally breaking ground as a novelist in 1920 with the publication of his first book Young Goedeschal. During this period he also struggled with morphine addiction, and the death of his younger brother in the first World War.

In the wake of the war, Fallada worked several farmhand and other agricultural jobs in order to support himself and finance his growing drug addictions. Before the war, Fallada relied on his father for financial support while writing; after the German defeat he was no longer able, nor willing, to depend on his father's assistance. Shortly after the publication of Anton and Gerda, Fallada reported to prison in Greiswald to serve a 6-month sentence for stealing grain from his employer and selling it to support his drug habit. Less than 3 years later, in 1926, Fallada again found himself imprisoned as a result of a drug and alcohol-fueled string of thefts from employers. In February 1928 he finally emerged free of addiction.

Fallada married Suse Issel in 1929 and maintained a string of respectable jobs in journalism, working for newspapers and eventually for the publisher of his novels, Rowohlt. It is around this time that his novels became noticeably political and started to comment

Πρώτη μου επαφή με Fallada (ξέρω έχω αργήσει) και ο τίτλος της συλλογής περιγράφει σαφώς το περιεχόμενο.

Εθισμένοι, μικροαπατεώνες, φυλακόβιοι, άνεργοι είναι οι πρωταγωνιστές των μικρών ιστοριών που προσπαθούν να επιβιώσουν αντιμέτωποι με τη κοινωνική πραγματικότητα (Γερμανία του Μεσοπολέμου), το σωφρονιστικό σύστημα και εν τέλει τον ίδιο τους τον εαυτό.

Γραφή που κυλάει αβίαστα, γρήγορα σα τις περιπλανώμενες ζωές των πρωταγωνιστών χωρίς περιττούς συναισθηματισμούς ή αυτολύπηση.

Οι απόκληροι του Μεσοπολέμου στη Γερμανία

Ο Χανς Φάλαντα (1893-1947) αποτελεί μία από τις μεγαλύτερες φωνές της γερμανικής συγγραφικής σχολής του Μεσοπολέμου. Έργα του όπως το Και τώρα, ανθρωπάκο; (1933) ή το Λύκος ανάμεσα σε λύκους (1938) θεωρούνται κλασικά αριστουργήματα. Πέραν των πολυσέλιδων μυθιστορημάτων του για τα οποία και είναι γνωστός, ο Φάλαντα είχε γράψει και έναν ικανό αριθμό διηγημάτων. Το 2014 κυκλοφόρησαν στη Γερμανία μερικά αθησαύριστα εξ αυτών, τα οποία γράφτηκαν στο διάστημα μεταξύ 1925 και 1946, και το Δεκέμβριο του 2020 οι εκδόσεις Κοβάλτιο τα παρουσίασαν στα ελληνικά με τον τίτλο Ιστορίες του υποκόσμου, σε μετάφραση της Αγγελικής Κορρέ.

Όπως προμηνύει και ο τίτλος του συγκεκριμένου βιβλίου, ο Χανς Φάλαντα παρουσιάζει ιστορίες από την πλευρά των απόκληρων της γερμανικής κοινωνίας, κατά την περίοδο των δύο Παγκοσμίων Πολέμων. Ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας είχε περάσει αρκετά χρόνια ζώντας ως απόκληρος, έτσι στα περισσότερα διηγήματα παρουσιάζεται έντονο το αυτοβιογραφικό στοιχείο.

Η έκδοση περιλαμβάνει έξι ιστορίες με το περιεχόμενό τους να ποικίλει, με την ίδια στιγμή όμως να υπάρχουν πολλά στοιχεία που τις ενώνουν. Οι ήρωες του Φάλαντα (σε πολλές περιπτώσεις είναι ο ίδιος κεντρικός ήρωας) παλεύουν με την φτώχεια, τον εθισμό στα ναρκωτικά, τις κακές οικογενειακές συνθήκες και τόσα άλλα. Παρά τις μαύρες συνθήκες με τις οποίες βρίσκονται αντιμέτωποι, δεν λείπει η εριστική και χιουμοριστική γραφή. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο, ο συγγραφέας φροντίζει να παρουσιάζει ευκολοδιάβαστα διηγήματα, και να περνάει τα μηνύματα που θέλει.

Το περιεχόμενο του βιβλίου θα φέρει πολλές φορές στο μυαλό βιβλία όπως οι Άθλιοι του Παρισιού και του Λονδίνου (1933) του Τζορτζ Όργουελ ή το Τζάνκι (1953) του Γουίλιαμ Μπάροουζ. Άνεργοι ήρωες που ψάχνουν τη παραμικρή ευκαιρία για ένα κομμάτι ψωμί σε μια περίοδο που η γερμανική κοινωνία μαστιζόταν από μεγάλη κρίση ή, την ίδια στιγμή, να κάνουν τα πάντα για μια δόση μορφίνης. Η ματιά του Φάλαντα είναι απόλυτα ρεαλιστική και παρουσιάζει στο 100% τις συνθήκες που λάμβαναν χώρα στις μεγαλουπόλεις και στην επαρχία της Γερμανίας του Μεσοπολέμου.

Εν κατακλείδι, Οι ιστορίες του υποκόσμου είναι ένα βιβλίο με ιστορίες σχετικά άγνωστες ενός πολύ μεγάλου συγγραφέα, όπως ο Χανς Φάλαντα, που παρουσιάζουν τη ζωή των πραγματικά ηττημένων των δύο Παγκοσμίων Πολέμων, και αυτοί δεν είναι άλλοι από τα μέλη των χαμηλών τάξεων της σπουδαίας Γερμανίας. Κρίνεται απαραίτητο για όσους αγαπούν πολύ τον Fallada και έχουν ένα ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για τα ξέφρενα χρόνια της Δημοκρατίας της Βαϊμάρης. Πολύ όμορφη έκδοση και με ενδιαφέρον επίμετρο. Μπράβο στις εκδόσεις Κοβάλτιο!

Τρίτο βιβλίο του Fallada που διαβάζω σε λιγότερο από χρόνο και παραμένει μία μικρή απόλαυση! Απολαμβάνω τον τρόπο γραφής και περιγραφής της Ναζιστικής Γερμανίας μέσα από τους ήρωες των βιβλίων του! Σε αυτό το βιβλίο, όπως παραπέμπει και ο τίτλος, διηγιέται ο συγγραφέας ιστορίες ανθρώπων που έχουν χάσει τα πάντα και παλεύουν με ναρκωτικά, φυλάκιση, πείνα και διάφορα πάθη που μπορούν να τους καταστρέψουν. Δυστυχώς έζησαν σε μία άσχημη εποχή, χωρίς να το επιλέξουν, κάτι που επιδείνωσε ακόμα περισσότερο τις αδυναμίες τους...

Ο πότης είναι ένα από τα βιβλία που πραγματικά με επηρέασαν. Στον πότη ο Χανς Φάλαντα χτίζει από το ειδικό και αφήνει τον αναγνώστη να μαντέψει τι γίνεται πίσω από την κουρτίνα της εποχής, να καταλήξει ο αναγνώστης στο γενικό. Επίσης είναι σαφές πως οι ευνοούμενοι και προνομιούχοι της εποχής του Πότη επέλεγαν να μην έχουν ιδέα για τη ζωή των εθισμένων και των απόκληρων.

Οι ιστορίες του υποκόσμου ενώ έχουν τη γνώριμη ενδιαφέρουσα γραφή του Φάλαντα, δείχνοντας συμπάθεια στη δύσκολη περίοδο της Γερμανίας, σε περίοδο μεγάλης αναταραχής, δεν δημιουργούνται ανθρώπινα πορτραίτα παρά η γραφή καταγραφής - ντοκιμαντέρ, όπου ο Φάλαντα είναι ανταποκριτής εθισμένων στη μορφίνη, μικροαπατεώνων και φυλακόβιων.

Συνεχώς η προσοχή μου έφευγε από το βιβλίο, μάλλον διότι οι άγνωστοι ήρωες σφηνάκια ερχόντουσαν κι έφευγαν από τα μάτια μου πριν προλάβω να τους συμπαθήσω, αντιπαθήσω ή επενδύσω με οποιονδήποτε τρόπο. Βέβαια, είναι σαφές πως ο Φάλαντα δεν επιχειρεί να κλέψει την καρδιά του αναγνώστη αλλά να χαρτογραφήσει μέσα από ανθρώπινες τραγωδίες την παρακμή του Βερολίνου. Πολλά από όσα γράφει προδίδουν το αυτοβιογραφικό στοιχείο, ωστόσο αυτό χάνεται μέσα στα διάφορα παρόμοια παραδείγματα.

Hans Fallada lived through turbulent times, and his own life was often troubled. This seems to have given him great insight into the lives of others, and in this wonderful collection of stories, written between 1925 and 1946, he chronicles the fate of ordinary people living through extraordinary times, doing their best in a period of great upheaval. Fallada’s strength lies in his ability to understand the plight of the ordinary man, the humble, and the poor, those struggling to make their way in an increasingly hostile world, to lead decent lives in spite of the pressures they have to face. In any collection of stories, there are always some better than others, but all the stories here are consistently well told and all have much to offer. They are quiet and measured, with no melodrama, often funny although usually dark, and demonstrate enormous insight into just how hard everyday life became.
Since the publication of his novel Alone in Berlin, there has been an increase in interest in Fallada, and this book of stories will surely enhance his reputation. I was moved by many of them, and his acute observation of and sympathy for his characters make this a wonderful portrait of a difficult period in German history. How it affected Germany’s ordinary citizens, particular in the years leading up to World War II, and how Fallada himself faced the challenges, particularly his morphine addiction, are all touched on here to great effect. I’m not a natural short story reader, but these kept my attention, and I very much enjoyed them.

Εκπληκτική συλλογή με εξαιρετική μετάφραση και αξιοσημείωτα σχόλια και επίμετρο! Μεγάλο μπράβο στο Κοβάλτιο για αυτή την έκδοση. Ο Φαλάντα είναι, όπως πάντα, καθηλωτικός.

I really like Hans Fallada’s writing and will forever be grateful to the publicists at Scribe who sent me three of his titles at a time when I’d never heard of him. I’ve now read five of his novels: Alone in Berlin, Little Man What Now? The Drinker, Wolf Among Wolves and Nightmare in Berlin and have two titles on my TBR: Why Do You Wear a Cheap Watch? (a Penguin Moderns edition) and A Small Circus. So of course I swooped on Tales from the Underground as soon as I saw it at the library.

What I like about Fallada’s writing is the way he manages to capture the sepia tones of life in Germany between the wars and during WW2, and how he tells the stories of flawed ordinary people who somehow manage to be engaging characters all the same. He was not living that life in sepia, of course, he was living it as dreary realism, as the introduction to this collection of short stories explains. What Jenny Williams does really well in this introduction is to show how these mostly autobiographical stories mesh with events in Fallada’s turbulent life: periods of unemployment; working as a labourer for the landed gentry, his addictions to alcohol and morphine, marriage and fatherhood and his imprisonment for embezzlement. She also shows how some of these stories reappear in his novels, so it’s an introduction well worth reading.

It sounds grim, but there is a jauntiness about some of the stories, and a refusal to give in. I particularly liked the stories about struggles with married life and fatherhood… in ‘Happiness and Woe’ (1932) he depicts the simple games of father and son, and the father’s anxiety about having to leave a small child at home alone. It couldn’t be helped: his wife was at work and he had to go into town to collect his unemployment relief payment so that the rent could be paid. But then there is his terrible failure when his sense of relief takes him to drinking at the bar afterwards…

‘Fifty Marks and A Merry Christmas’ (1932) is about a young couple living close to the breadline and their dreams of spending a Christmas bonus from his work. At the moment The Guardian is running a series about poverty in Australia and Fallada’s story with its Christmas wishlist shows the same melancholy detail. Finding the money for simple things such as a haircut is a struggle, and the purchase of a lottery ticket is not the folly it appears to be but rather a desperate clutch at hope for better things.

One of the things I like about short story collections is the ease of which you can dip in and out, one story at a time as it were, without losing any narrative thread. The problem with short story collections though is that there is no narrative thread, they can jump from tone to tone, first-person to third person narrative and the quality can vary dramatically. You often feel that you're reading a series of sketches - ideas that will later be fleshed out, trimmed down and slipped in in a minor role or re-worked into a different context in the writer's novels.

This is certainly the case, in part, with Tales From The Underworld, a collection of short stories by Hans Fallada. While his novels are rich, tightly bound mines of quality, the short stories here are perhaps too obviously touch-points for his later works to be taken at face-value. References to Altholm (setting for A Small Circus) rub shoulders with portrayals of farmworkers suffering at the hands of the government, characters across different stories share names and petty criminals and criminal acts populate a number of these stories. The struggles to get by, scrape an existence and find succour in the arms of loved ones at the most austere of times form the binding theme between those stories gathered here.

That being said, Fallada is a vastly underrated writer and even the lesser of those stories within Tales From The Underworld is only judged so in comparison to his own more-fulfilled writing.

A darkly humorous and at times devastatingly moving collection, the short stories here are sequenced chronologically and show Fallada refining his style and themes. The quality tails off toward the end, sadly, but when viewed in line with his own life add up to show an insight into his thinking and writing process.

Hans fallada is a great writer and Aone in Berlin is one of the outstanding novels of the Second World War. These stories are an interesting mixture The first set of stories were written before the nazis came to power in Germany. They depict with vividness how appalling life was for so many germans. They give a clear understanding of how such a monstrous regieme came to power far more than most historians have done. The second set of stories were written after the end of the Second World War and reflect the fact that the author was writing under the watchful eye of the East German Marxist regieme. As such they lack the literary freedom of the earlier stories. Whenever the author touches on addiction the writing echoes with e the authenticity of the experiences of a true addict. The writings here will reward any reader with an interest in life in germany in the Twentieth Century

I loved Alone in Berlin so leapt at the chance of reading his collection of short stories. Sadly I found them underwhelming in large part. There were a couple that kept one going to the next one Fifty Marks and a Merry Christmas -- a lot merrier than the one we are enjoying/enduring now mind -- Why Do You Wear a Cheap Watch -- seconds out round....-- and With Measuring Tape and Watering Can which is not only a good one for a game of Charades -- though obviously this Christmas it is a game some will only play a deux or in front of a mirror -- but a worthy read. A curate's egg of a book and that is not one of the titles....

Ο πρωταγωνιστής θα μπορούσε να μην είναι ο άνθρωπος, αλλά η φτώχεια, η πείνα, η εξαθλίωση, η ανεργία, οι οριακές διαπροσωπικες σχέσεις και φυσικά οι εθισμοί. Οι εθισμοί πάντα κατέτρεχαν τον συγγραφέα, όπως η μορφίνη (αναφ. στον Εφιάλτη), η κόκα, το αλκοόλ (αναφ. στον Πότη). Πόσος κόπος να επιβιώσει κανείς όχι μόνο σωματικά, αλλά και πνευματικά εκείνη την διαολεμένη περίοδο!
Η διηγηματογραφία του και ο αυτοβιογραφισμός του για άλλη μια φορά συναρπάζουν και συγκλονίζουν.
Όλα τα δεινά που περιγράφει τα έχει ζήσει!!!

Πολύ καλό! Ο Φάλλαντα μου ειναι πολύ αγαπημένος συγγραφέας, η πνευματική του διαύγεια και το τρελό του χιούμορ μεσα σε όλον το ζόφο και τη μαστούρα της ζωής του, η υπέροχη περιγραφική του γλώσσα, οι γεματες ενδιαφέρον ιστορίες που περιγράφει ή που εφευρίσκει, όλα αυτα με ενθουσιάζουν πραγματικά.
Το μόνο που δεν ξερω για την παρούσα έκδοση ειναι το οτι, αν και η μεταφράστρια φαίνεται υπέρ του δέοντος καταρτισμένη, παιρνει καποιες ελευθερίες στην γλώσσα όπως τις αναλύει και η ιδια, που αν δεν παίρνονταν τί θα έδινε το αποτέλεσμα άραγε; Αυτό το ερώτημα με ιντριγκάρει και θα ηθελα να διαβάσω τα συγκεκριμενα κειμενα και σε άλλη μετάφραση

I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. There were such a range, from funny to romance to harsh realities, and Fallada was able to build his characters and worlds so impressively in such a short space. I definitely had my favourites, namely 'Kubsch and His Allotment', 'The Open Door', 'The Missing Greenfinches' and 'Calendar Stories'. Will defo reach for this book again, especially when in a reading slump and in need of a quick story.

'Fifty Marks and a Merry Christmas', 'The Good Pasture on the Right' and 'Short Treatise in the Joys of Morphinism' make it worth the asking price or the minute it takes to request online from the local library.

Very disappointing. I enjoyed Alone in Berlin and Iron Gustav but found these short stories boring and the English translation rather poor. I hope that Alone among Wolves will re-establish my esteem for Fallada

More 3.5 than 3. Fallada's earlier stories were nice and fresh, though more like snapshots than developed narratives. His later works feel a bit too platitudinous, but there are flashes of the same skill that made Alone in Berlin such a fantastic read.

The title is deceptive; only a few of the short stories are about the criminal underworld, I would have preferred more. The majority of stories address the harshness and struggles of ordinary life in Germany between the wars.

Recommended stories:

I'm writing this review a couple of months after reading these stories, and a few stand out in my memory - the loss of a ring by a worker on a farm leading to a tragic outcome / a salesman struggling to make a living through selling subscriptions to a local newspaper / a soldier returns to their family farm after the war with an injury which renders them useless for farm work.

The narrative skill of Fallada is extremely extroverted, he spots you as a target and focuses on you obviously because of his personal experience in what he describes in an almost autobiographical creation, which despite its realistic transfer on paper a playful ironic mood and significant doses of humor are detectable throughout its creation.

Η αναγνωστική διαδικασία που ξεκίνησε ούτε με προσδοκίες ούτε και χωρίς, μια κατά κάποιο τρόπο ουδέτερη φάση, σαν κυανόκρανος σε ζώνη κηδεμονεύουσας ειρήνης, εξελίχθηκε σε εμπειρία όπου οι ήρωες του Φάλαγκαν έγιναν ένας ιδιότυπος μεσολαβητής ανάμεσα σε μένα και τη ζωή, όχι κάποιου περιθωρίου της, αλλά της ζωής εν γένει.
Σαφώς οι ήρωες του κινούνται σε αυτό που αποκαλείται περιθώριο, μια κατάσταση που οι περισσότεροι έχουμε ακουστά, κι ακριβώς επειδή η γνώση μας προέρχεται από πληροφορίες κι όχι εμπειρία, ασκεί μια τρομερή γοητεία. Δε θα μιλήσω επομένως για τις αδυναμίες του σωφρονιστικού συστήματος, για την απέχθειά μας στη φτώχεια γιατί ουσιαστικά, κι αν το εξετάσουμε με ειλικρίνεια, σ'αυτήν ακριβώς εντοπίζεται η απέχθειά μας και ως εκ τούτο από αυτήν πηγάζει και ο όποιος ρατσισμός μας κατεξοχήν κι όχι από αλλού, ούτε για τις τραγικές ανεπάρκειες που εκδηλώνουμε ως κοινωνία, ως άνθρωποι, ως υπάρξεις τέλος πάντων. Γιατί ο Φάλαγκαν το κάνει τόσο εξαιρετικά με το ιδιαίτερο ύφος του που αντί να αποστρέφει έλκει, αντί να εκμεταλλεύεται τη βία και τον πόνο για να προκαλέσει τα μετατρέπει σε εύχρηστο εκφραστικό μέσο και περνάει τα μηνύματά του μετατρέποντας τη γραφή του σε καλό αγωγό της ουσίας.
Η αφηγηματική δεινότητα του Φάλαγκαν είναι τρομερά εξωστρεφής, σε εντοπίζει σαν στοχο και κεντράρει πάνω σου προφανώς λόγω της προσωπικής του εμπειρίας σε οσα περιγράφει σε μια σχεδόν αυτοβιογραφική δημιουργία, που παρά τη ρεαλιστική μεταφορά της στο χαρτί μια περιπαιχτική ειρωνική διάθεση και σημαντικές δόσεις χιούμορ είναι εντοπίσιμες σε όλη την έκταση της δημιουργίας του.
Η αλήθεια ειναι πως η επαφή μας δεν ήταν καθόλα ομαλή. Αρχικά τον βαρέθηκα, δεν μπορούσα να διακρίνω τις προθέσεις του κι εκείνος να κινητοποιήσει το ενδιαφέρον ή τα αισθήματα μου, κι ενώ τον απέρριψα με ξαναβρήκε στη γωνία απροετοίμαστη όπου τον αποδέχτηκα και με σακάτεψε. Εκεί γύρω στην 67 σελίδα έμελλε να γίνει ένα αφιλοκερδές φερέφωνο της βίαιης μοίρας των ηρώων του και ένας εξαιρετικός συνοίγορος της ταραχώδους ζωής τους, κι εγώ έμεινα να ντρέπομαι για όσα ένιωσα στην αρχή και να γοητεύομαι σε μια εξίσωση ανάλογη μεταξύ των δύο της όρων.

With all the empathy but much more immediacy than Fallada's novels, these short stories are snapshots of the ups and downs experienced and the hard choices made by people living their lives during the austerity of Germany in the first half of the 20th century.

Great! A totally random find, picked off the BCC Central shelf after finding no Dick or Egan - Fallada was right there. The writing is real. I imagine HF as a thirties-era housebreaking junkie. I had thought Burroughs the first to tell us how addiction translated into cities and families - but no, HF did so decades before. Of course de Q and Coleridge covered this also, but HF I relate to in terms of the world he lived in. for the earlier recorders of this grim choice, there was nothing about the trouble in tearing a sheet of paper into the exact non-standard size of a prescription.

I read this one as I really enjoyed Alone in Berlin but I can't say this one really matched up in terms of quality. None of the stories were amazing but all were short and written in a nice and easy-to-digest style. You could easily dip in and out and read something else in the meantime if you wanted. This might be good if you have a historical interest as all the stories document life in Germany during the Depression but I wouldn't rush out to get it.
