Lin Wei Xi found out after she died that she was just cannon fodder in a novel, used as a contrast to the gentle and considerate and virtuous female lead.
The male lead was her ex-husband, the dignified heir of Yan Wang, his family was superior and brilliant, but the heroine was not her.
The female lead was her concubine-born younger sister, and her husband’s white moonlight, his cinnabar mole, no wonder! After Lin Wei Xi died, her husband finally married her sister as he wished.
She watched coldly at the two like honey in the oil, in love and harmonious, everyone using the success of her younger sister to contrast the impropriety of the original wife.
Lin Wei Xi sneered, okay, since your love moves the world, then this sister will come back and be your stepmother!
So she married her ex-husband’s father, the father-in-law she never met in the previous life, the country’s God of war, who has not remarried after losing his wife, the one that holds military power, the brilliant Yan Wang.
Later Yan Wang, who was in his prime years and used to act decisively, looked at his small, delicate, much younger wife, and had a headache.
No matter, she is still young, he has to spoil her, indulge her, teach her.
CW: age gap, forbidden, guardian-ward, older woman stuck in a younger girls body, MOC, character death, SLOW BURN!!!!
I don't like age gap all too much and the FMC is a teenager while the MMC is 30+ (he had his kid/her ex-husband at 15/16) but I LOVEEEEEE MESSY CHINESE HISTORICAL WEBNOVELS!!! But other than that, I'm all for a good DILF story. Ancient Chinese side character transmigration though???? Omg . This is FOOD. It's SUSTENANCE!!! This is something I come back to over and over and over again.
FMC is dead. She's died. It took a long time, her husband hated her so much he never even visited her deathbed, and she never even got to actually see her war god father-in-law, a Prince of their empire, a hero she's always worshipped since day 1.
The next time she wakes up, she's thousands of miles away, in the body of a young girl who's being abused by her relatives. And in comes the FIL, who decides to help her because she's the daughter of one of a deceased general and best friend. His whole plan is to take her back home with him and talk to his trusted friend, the Queen Dowager-- who btw is FMC's maternal grandmother who's grieving over her granddaughters death-- to get this young girl married. Except she doesn't want to get married, and doing all it takes to beg him to send her to a nunnery. She's done marriage and is traumatized by it. When they get back to his (and her's, except, he doesn't know lol) place, they find out something absolutely insane: a few days after her death, her husband decided to get married to her shu (concubine) sister. The Prince was already super fucking pissed off at his son for disrespecting his dead wife (who again, the FIL never even got to meet but he was deadass on his way back home to meet her) and getting married again IMMEDIATELY, meanwhile the Sister?? Oh she LOATHES the FMC on sight. And unsurprisingly, the ex-husband is really interested in her, but doesn't want to have such thoughts because he loves his new wife. But, isn't not his fault she reminds him so much of his dead wife who he feels guilty towards!!!!
The Sister decides that maybe this girl should marry someone in her family, maybe her rapey cousin? She lets the emperor know and YUNO once the emperor decrees something, you can't not do it. When FMC finds out, she's livid and she's panicking and gets sick. The last thing she wants is to end up in the hands of a worse abuser, and in her desperation, goes to MMC and begs him to stop this by the only way he could: if they could just marry to each other, then he'd have someone who can handle his affairs at home AND he's the only one who's in a high enough position to say no. If he denies the marriage request for her but she stays in his home after, then her reputation would be ruined, so why not just make it official?
And that's how she became the stepmother of her ex-husband 🙂🙂
Alright a couple of thoughts I had:
✨ This translation is great. It was TLed by Moon Jellyfish and I thought it was really good compared to other TLs I've read for other novels
✨ You can't help but feel sorry for the shitty ex-husband/stepson. You WILL be reminded of how neglectful and mean he was to FMC. She remembers it all too. He's haunted by it. He feels bad. He's also lusting after his new (younger than him) stepmom and feels absolutely disgusted with himself by it, but hes doing his best to also act as a filel son to her. And that's why
✨ The Prince is a HORRIBLE father but then again he also became a father way too young, and wait til you find out about his dead wife. Omg she was something else. There's only so much toxicity anyone can take, and that's why he spent years at war instead of at home raising his son, who turned out like this piece of shit. So yeah, he blames himself and doesn't know how to communicate with his own kid that well.
✨ The Sister who's also her Daughter-in-law. Read the book because I am not spoiling that twist that still has me gasping til this day.

Guo Xi passed away without her husband or family by her side. Of course she had some grievance. As the only Di daughter without siblings except for a Shu sister and a Shu brother, who was going to preserve her mother's ancestral tablet. On the way to afterlife she had a long dream and found out that her previous life was almost like a joke. She was a cannon fodder in a novel. The male lead was her husband and the female lead was her Shu sister. They had their happy ending in the novel. But, what about her? What did she do to deserve this pain and humiliation? And probably because of that, Guo Xi woke up as Lin Wei Xi. And as the title suggested, Lin Wei Xi married Gu Hui Yan, Guo Xi's father in-law.
Before you guys exclaimed in shock, Guo Xi was dead. Yes, her soul enter a new body which was Lin Wei Xi but, Lin Wei Xi had nothing to do with Gu Hui Yan. And so, I strongly believe there's no incest play here.
However, I was teetering between three or four stars. The main reason because the writer made it that Lin We Xi and Guo Xi share a striking resemblance in term of appearances. And because of this, Gu Cheng Yao, Guo Xi's husband, had a dejavu the more he got to know this stepmother of his. It made him realized that he indeed love his late wife and so he did his best for Lin We Xi, hoping deep in his heart that she was Guo Xi's reincarnation or some sort, which was on point because he was half correct.
But, because of this extra plot, the relationship between Gu Hui Yan and his son, Gu Cheng Yao was not on good term most of the time. Gu Hui Yan was a general with thousand of loyal soldiers under his belt while Gu Cheng Yao was a scholar. That alone was a huge bolder between this father and son. At first Gu Hui Yan had some guilt towards his son because he was never there from him while Gu Cheng Yao was growing up as he was at the battleground. In fact, he was only home to see his son for the first time when the boy started to crawl. But then, jealousy came into play and as reader, I could sense the awkwardness.
Lin We Xi on the other hand, truly accepted Gu Cheng Yao as her stepson. Yes, he did play a minimum role for Guo Xi's death but, he wasn't evil. Gu Cheng Yao was raised by his late mother with a fairy tale ideology and just like those K-pop sasaeng fan, he could be a bit too much with this believe. He taught Guo Xi's lied to him and it shattered his fairy tale ideology of her. Because both were too proud to have a heart to heart talk, their once happy relationship deteriorated. And so even though Lin Wei Xi still held some grudge against Gu Cheng Yao, she still wanted a good ending for him.
The face-slapping was good though as the evildoer get their just. However the extra was just so and so because it did not add anything new to the story except that Lin We Xi had a son and a daughter.
This is another story in the rebirth genre, but the twist here is that the MC is born into a different person's body within the same timeline rather than being reborn to a younger version of herself. That means that no one from her family recognizes her, and no one understands why she seems to inexplicably hate some people upon the first meeting.
The MC is Gao Xi, who's reborn into the body of Lin Weixi. GX had a brief interaction with LWX, and before dying herself, LWX lets GX's soul into her sickly body. The whole family dynamics is a bit odd post rebirth, since LWX ends up marrying her father-in-law from her previous life, Gu Huiyan. So after rebirth, she ends up as the stepmother to her previous husband and his new wife, Gao Xi's younger sister and a nasty schemer with no bottom line. This kind of setting is really unique.
I didn't like the MC that much initially, as she was a little bit too scheming and aggressive for my taste, especially after she recommended herself as a wife to the ML. You can argue that she was feverish, but no respectable woman, especially in that era, would ever be so bold to do such a thing even when she's sick. Luckily she calmed down and started acting with more dignity after the marriage, so she was an easier character to like. I was really sick of hearing about her amazing appearance after a while though. There were so many descriptions of her beauty, like the following: Everyone had their own opinions about beauty, but for Lin Wei Xi’s ultimate blooming beauty, even if they didn’t say anything, their eyes still revealed their innermost thoughts. Some beauties were like green tea, weak but demanding. Some beauties were like a peony, majestic and gorgeous. And Lin Wei Xi was probably a ruby polished to its full potential. You could dislike her, but you couldn’t say that she wasn’t good-looking.
The story is interesting enough. It follows the MC from when she first meets the ML to when he takes her in as a guest of his residence. After their marriage, we see her slowly build and consolidate her power as the female head of the household, and then after that she focuses her attention on managing the back garden, as her former sister is vicious and will stop at nothing to be #1 in her husband's heart. It helps that the MC has unconditional support from GHY, who commands respect throughout the household, so even the older servants who have been around for decades can't do anything to her.
Throughout it all, the MC and ML's relationship slowly develops. They start their marriage not knowing much about each other; the MC is under the impression for the longest time that the ML only married her out of a sense of duty rather than anything else and doesn't expect much from him. However, the ML is extremely observant and sees how LWX is a smart girl who can manage his household and slowly falls in love with her wit and beauty. It was gratifying when they finally acknowledge their feelings for each other.
After learning the ML's past and the truth of his first wife, I'm happy that he finally can be selfish and experience love for himself. In the past, he's had nothing but responsibility, and even his first marriage didn't bring him any joy, so he deserves to be happy now with LWX.
Most of the people who wronged GX in her previous life regret treating her the way they did especially after learning the truth of Gao Ran's crafty and insidious personality. Her dad and her ex-husband eventually realize the truth, and when they think back, Gao Xi seems like a saint next to Gao Ran. It was nice to see that even after her death, they're still thinking about her.
I was wondering whether any characters would guess who LWX really was, since there are so many things that don't make sense if you really think about it. Like why would an orphaned girl from a small village be able to manage a royal household with hundreds of servants perfectly without any training? She even claims her birthday is the same as Gao Xi's and makes no attempt to hide her fondness for the rabbit, which is GX's zodiac animal. After spending enough time around her dominant personality and once you think about all the small hints that don't add up, it kind of makes sense that LWX isn't just LWX. I'm glad that her ex-sister realizes the truth and gets served her just desserts, so she knows exactly who she lost to.
Overall, I enjoyed this read, especially once the main character was back to her normal self and didn't have to rely on any scheming in her desperation to establish a stable foundation for herself.
IBTSOMEH is a slow-burn romance where Gao Xi, the di daughter of her maiden home and Shizi Consort of Yan Wang Mansion gets a second chance at her life and reincarnates as Lin Wei Xi, the daughter of Yan Wang's comrade in the military.
Lin Wei Xi was originally a child who had a "weak body" and her soul passed on to heaven after her father's death. She remembers how Gao Xi had helped by paying for her treatment when all others in the capital turned their back on the father-daughter duo, so Lin Wei Xi allows Gao Xi's soul to enter her former body.
And that was how Yan Wang found his former daughter in-law, when he came in search of Lin Wei Xi after promising his comrade to look after his daughter.
Lin Wei Xi (Gao Xi) recalls that she'd never met her legendary father in-law when she was Gao Xi but unexpectedly he turned out to be very young and handsome.
Yan Wang is pleasantly surprised that a little girl dared to look at him and stare him in the eyes when no one else dared to. After some dramatic things happen, Lin Wei Xi (Gao Xi) returns back to the capital from the village where Lin Wei Xi had formerly stayed.
Lin Wei Xi (Gao Xi) does get her revenge on all the people who had wronged her in her former life but she's not as cold and revenge-oriented like other female leads in reincarnation stories. She still retains her childishness, showing her soft side only for her beloved Wangye.
The author is very subtle in evolving the leads into devoted love interests, so subtle in fact, that you'd miss the exact moment where they fall for each other if you don't keep an eye out for it.
Every woman deserves an emotionally mature man like Yan Wang. Yan Wang shows character development but nothing too dramatic to blindside the readers. He's also shown to be very reserved and subtle in his actions.
This is the transmigration into a side character in your previous life story. It’s “I know better, now. So, I will take my revenge in this second life, in this new body, and in a position of power!” It is a fun read, surprisingly, as the character develops more in the second life with a mature, endearing and protective husband giving her the love and attention she lacked in her first life. The author makes her a more in-depth and positive character as the story builds. Her new place of power and supportive husband allows her to mature and that was the key to this story for me. It moved from utter revenge to focus on things more important in a short and precious life.
idk why it has only 105 pages here on gr where it's actually 105 chapters 🙄
n e ways this one has: • age gap • transmigration/reborn (ofc) • revenge • historical romance
what i like: • the main characters have brains and use it really well. the ML loves to spoil the FL and basically kissed the ground she walks on. the FL is smart, a bit chaotic compared to other transmigration novels that i read where usually the girls are very composed and mature-y. but NAWT THIS FL, she's really loud and won't back down from unfairness. it's really refreshing. • this is also the first cnovel that the rival is also a transmigrator. it's intriguing esp if the rival came from the future and she thought she could conquer this world bc she has the knowledge from the future but she still lose to the FL who eventhough also a transmigrator she's from this ancient world. so in the end everything depends whether you're an assh- or not or if you use brain or not.
what i dislike: • i was expecting the ex-ML to go down too but apparently not 😐 what, is it because he's the ML's son?? it's annoying bc i want him to be punished too. feeling guilty and regret for the rest of his life is meh
I think novel updates said this was published in 2018? And you could definitely tell it was one of her earlier books. But I overall enjoyed it. I ... I guess LWX wasn't trying to hide her "past life" only she wouldn't admit it - so like IF she was trying to hide it she didn't do a great job...
argh the LACK OF COMMUNICATION. I was so fucking glad ML kinda explained about his first wife... and MOST glad his subordinate comes in and is like "look I know I shouldn't and he'll be mad but I HAVE to say it" and TBH shout out to that dude he saved their marriage. They seriously should name one of their sons after him.
... >.> did the shit ex just ... die alone? Granted we stop getting updates about him when he's like ... ~mid 20s?
Heh I wanted MORE. But it was a fun read - esp as a "oh this is how she used to be"/there's some zanier stuff thrown in there that I don't think JYLH/SFF would write now. LOL def not this pairing? And that ~everyone in the end KNEW about the past life but they all agree to ... not ever talk about it. ... I REALLY most want to find all the extras I've missed out on on the badly translated JYLH/SFF books. Would absolutely re-read Sister in Law. Obvs just re-read IBTBTED.
~*~*~
End c24 lol I literally said “OH FUCK” - go LWX our fearless FL! … also that bitch was half sister needs to be crushed into the ground then plowed into nothingness.
Ahhh end c25 of mandarin duck pair ML had gone to princess K’s to propose to FL!!!’ 💯❤️
Honestly skimmed/skipped c46p1 cuz fuck these petty scheming evil POSs
C58… the fact that shit son didn’t even know GR(POS) was his replacement wife makes me judge him even more… this stupid fucking fuck.
C65 eeeee GHY was gonna abandon the emperor to go pick up LWX so the emperor sent a sedan! 😱❤️💯
Uhoh c67 both ML & his son are noticing things/ML knows if FL was LWX she would’ve gone to a lantern festival before…
" you"ll never realize how important that thing or person is until u lost them" this words is really right for gu cheng yao, "the ex husband" the ignorant husband who always think that he's always right.he never analize "why" or at least ask her "why" ....u could be happy, i mean "maybe" u could save ur married if only u want to ask her "why" and all the misunderstanding will be explain clearly n she won't really hate u until she die. but yeah, once again i say this ......"there's no medicine for regret" n u really deserved it.gu cheng yao grown up from childhood with a "delusional mother " and an absent figure father. but still it doesn't make me forgive you.lol.no no no big no and our ML...maybe God really blessed u, coz u meet the right woman at the right time. he's an ideal husband for our FL, which have been hurts before.he gave so much patient, love, so understanding. coz time and patient is what she need more. not everyone meet the right person at the right time.and he's really cherished her. that's what i like from ML. and the FL... it's not her fault, i think she's the most innocent person in this story. and i'm so happy for her "happy ending" this story so heartbreaking and beautiful. and i love it
3.5, not quite a 4 but definitely better than a 3. I liked that her ex-husband wasn't just a simple villain, we get to see his pov sometimes and we discover how his upbringing contributed to the original situation. It was still really awkward to read that her ex and her current husband both gradually realized she was actually Gao Xi though. Overall, it was pretty fluffy, Yan Wang essentially pampers Gao Xi the entire time, and there was the obligatory satisfaction of seeing Gao Ran get her comeuppance.
Summary: Gao Xi married the son of a military hero and prince and her marriage was going great for the first month and then suddenly her husband started treating her coldly and her pride wouldn't allow her to concede so she became sick and died alone and neglected. She transmigrates into the body of the daughter of a subordinate of the military hero, Yan Wang, and begs him to take her away from her evil relatives. Yan Wang takes her back to the capital with him and Gao Xi encounters her ex-husband and his new wife, her sister, Gao Ran, who she discovered after her death actually is a modern woman who transmigrated into this world. Gao Xi marries Yan Wang and then there's a bit of face slapping and fluff.
Gao Xi thinks her life is unfortunate, until she dies and find out she's just cannon fodder for the transmigrator who took over her younger sister's body. When a random act of kindness allows Gao Xi to be reborn as Lin Wei Xi, she takes the oppertunity to live a good life. Who knew that that second chance would lead her to Gu Hui Yan, the father of Gao Xi's former husband.
I read this book because I'd already read others from the same translator. I've also read another novel by this same author and mixed up the summary with a third book, again by the same author. If you've read Greetings, Ninth Uncle, you pretty much know how it goes with the sister swap, but the author still gives you a new story. The age gap is wide though, so read at your own risk.
That being said, I thought it was a pretty okay story. It was slower than I would have liked, but the ending made up for it.
If you like, cannon fodder becoming main characters, rebirth / transmigration, and the phrase "if you break my heart, I go date your father", then this is for you.
Overall, it's really a good read. It's quite well written. And although the progress of the romance could be said to be moving quite fast, there's still that slow burn vibes regarding the feelings between the two main characters. Despite the way the two of them treated each other, their feelings of "love" doesn't come as quick. And considering how things are done in Ancient China, it's really believable. After all, sometimes with all those arranged marriage that happened, the feelings always develop later. The harem intrigue is really interesting to read especially the part where the MC is maneuvering over her so called "daughter-in-law" schemes which is a different flavor considering usually it's the opposite that happens. I love how things are slowly being unraveled as we get further and further to the story. The way of how each things are explained and all. It's such an enjoyable light read for me.
One of the most beautifully written Chinese translations novel I've ever read... Although she became the 'stepmother', it doesn't make things weird, and the romance flows naturally between her and the new husband. It is written in a new perspective, the main character's sister is a transmigrator who somehow killed the MC in the process. The main character died, learned about the truth, and be reborn in a different body. The show of power of her new status is also refreshing to me. You just can't help but understand everycharacter's point of view in this novel. I recommend this a lot! Hopefully it will get more recognition in the future.
although it's a romance, it resembles tragedy at some point. there is a face slapping and revenge, but not as much as romance - slowly building trust and love between main leads.
side stories aren't needed, they are more disappointing, than intriguing.
one star is lost for that, and other problems (i acknowledge its historical setting, but it bugged me).
i was enjoying this novel for the most part, but a certain something about it was hitting too close to home for me and has been bothering me. i’m choosing peace, so i’m gonna just dnf. 🫡 maybe i’ll get back to it eventually, but it’s just not working out for me rn.
Gao Xi, a daughter of a duke and a granddaughter of a princess, was married into a prince family and suffer grievances due to misunderstanding of her husband and scheming of her half sister. After a year of marriage, she passed away and reborn into the body of another girl that she helped before, Lin Wei Xi.
Recently being orphaned due to her father's sacrifice in protecting the prince, a.k.a. the father of her husband in the previous life, Wei Xi inherited her father's wealth and almost being forced to get married. Fortunately, Yan Wang (the prince) came to bury her father's remains and then helped her to get away from her aunt's family. Due to some circumstances, she finally got married to Yan Wang and then returned to the prince mansion and faced her ex-husband and half sister again.
What I like about this story is the FL is quite an independent woman. She's not overly dependent on her husband's power and she strives to establish herself as the mistress of the house through her own capabilities. Yes, she had a little insight about the future, but what she knows wasn't very clear so she didn't rely on her knowledge too much and kinda just go on with her live like normal people. She also didn't use insidious meanings to take revenge on her ex-husband and half-sister. What she did was only taken advantage on the wrong things they did and give little punishments once in a while, but it was never too excessive or life-threatening. She basically just ignore them as long as they did not intend to harm her. I like that she learns to enjoy her new life with her loving husband and slowly regain her self-confidence through Yan Wang's care and understanding.
In contrast to Wei Xi, her half-sister Gao Ran was actually a modern woman who transmigrated into the body of a concubine-born daughter of the duke family. She could've had a happy ending if she wasn't too greedy/conceited, but in the end, since she had always been jealous of Gao Xi and later of Wei Xi, she ended up losing everything she had gained so far and met a tragic end.
I wish I could read more about Yan Wang part and thoughts on the whole story. I also wish that he explained to his son what happened in his first marriage. Thankfully, the author gave us some tidbits on Yan Wang's thoughts in the extra chapter.
Just a heads-up, some readers might find the age gap between the MCs to be uncomfortable (ML was 33 y/o while MC was 16 y/o) but keep in mind that this was set in ancient china, and a 17-year age gap was actually quite acceptable at that time. Besides, both MCs entered the marriage willingly and then treat each other with respect and care (though the husband sometimes indulged the wife's stubborness due to her young age), so I don't think the age gap would be a problem.
Thumbs up for the author and translator, both doing a great job in delivering the story. I look forward to read more stories by this author!

This is a very very good story, but be aware of tags before reading.
I felt so much emotions while reading it. There was enough rod drama, but somehow it didn’t get bored and angry with it. There is a revenge and face-slapping.
I’m really very happy for MC to be able to find ML in the end. They are a good couple, and age is not the issue here, imho.
This story made me think of many stuff and also gave me some new view on some other. Quite an enjoyable read.
