Hadrian’s Wall Path, 84 miles from end to end, follows the course of northern Europe’s largest surviving Roman monument, a 2nd-century fortification built – in the border country between England and Scotland – on the orders of the Emperor Hadrian in AD122. 

Hadrian’s Wall Path is the first National Trail to follow the course of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is proving an immensely popular walk and in the first 18 months of its opening in 2003 it attracted almost 400,000 walkers.

Do not attempt to walk the Hadrian's Wall Path without this book! These helpful details and landmarks are not found on any other maps, and you will quite literally be lost without them. The only improvement would be if Mr Stedman could get a female co-author to contribute tips about location and frequency of toilets.

if you are planning on doing the Hadrians Wall walk, you need this book. it is everything you didn't know you needed, and will be in your hand the entire way (deservedly).

Der Hadrianswall wurde zwischen 122 und 128 n. Chr. auf Befehl des römischen Kaisers Hadrian gebaut. Er erstreckte sich auf einer Länge von 118 Kilometern zwischen Newcastle im Osten und dem Solway Firth an der britischen Westküste. Er bestand aus einer bis zu 4,5m hohen Steinmauer, die mit Graben, 320 Türmen, 16 Forts und 80 Milecastles geschützt wurde. 1987bwurde der Hadrianswall zum UNESCO-Weltkulurerbe erklärt. Der Hadrian's Wall Path, einer der National Trails in Großbritannien, wurde 2003 eröffnet. Er verläuft zu großen Teilen parallel zur ursprünglichen Linie des Walls meistens direkt neben ihm.

Bevor es mit dem Wandern losgeht, gibt Henry Stedman allgemeine Informationen: über Pflanzen und Tiere, das Wetter zur jeweiligen Jahreszeit, in der man wandert und einige Dos und Don'ts. Gerade weil es sich beim Hadrianswall um ein nationales Monument handelt, gibt es einige Dinge zu beachten, die bei anderen Wanderungen nicht wichtig sind.

Das Buch führt die Wanderer auf acht Etappen von Bowness on Solway im Westen bis Wallsend im Osten. Zu jeder Etappe gibt es eine Wegbeschreibung mit Sehenswürdigkeiten nicht nur aus der römischen Zeit, sondern auch aus der jüngeren Vergangenheit und Gegenwart und Informationen zum Endpunkt. Für jemand, die wie ich den Weg von Osten nach Westen wandert, gibt es am Ende des Kapitels die Zusammenfassung der jeweiligen Etappe. Nicht ganz so ausführlich, aber weil in Verbindung mit der West-Ost-Etappe hatte ich nie das Gefühl, dass mir etwas fehlen würde.

Am Ende gibt es zu jeder Etappe eine kleine Karte. Die haben mir besonders gefallen, sie waren liebevoll gezeichnet und die Kommentare haben nicht nur auf viele kleine Dinge neben des Wegs hingewiesen, sondern haben nochmal wertvolle Tipps gegeben.

Ein fast perfekter Reiseführer, allerdings war das Buch trotz des kleinen Packmaßes zu schwer, um es bei der Wanderung mitzunehmen. Egal, ob im großen Rucksack oder im Tagesgepäck.

I'm planning to walk Hadrian's wall next year, and I think this book has made planning much easier. (If I find out differently when I'm out there, I'll rewrite this review!) Stedman had provided simple maps with lots of easy to spot way points. He's also got information on buses, places to eat, places to stay, and simple history.

Indispensable it you are making the trek. I used a sherpa service but this book was so helpful in locating landmarks and giving historical reference to my surroundings on the journey. I did not run into many Americans making the trek and think this book covered a lot of information that the Brits already know and take for granted that everyone knows.

Absolutely brilliant book, couldn't have done the walk without it. All the information for the walk is spot on, so lovely to see the walk mapped out in front of you, made the walk so much more enjoyable!!!
