Да се обърнеш към мъдростта на класическата древност е истинско удоволствие. Ползата за ума е двойна – ровиш се в историята и разсъждаваш за настоящето. Защото по един прекрасен начин биваш убеден (и успокоен), че едни и същи проблеми са занимавали хората и тогава, и сега.

Но благородството на ума, отдаден на истината, е може би най-впечатляващият урок на древността. Урок по водене на спор. Урок за измамността на славата. За секса и въздържанието. За удоволствията. За богатството от пътешествията. За смъртта.

За добрия живот. Изобщо – за качеството да бъдеш човек.

Este livro foi uma agradável surpresa. Uma prova que os problemas da humanidade nunca passam de moda. O autor não está completamente na senda de Jostein Gaarder, mas este tipo de filosofia "prêt-à-porter" consegue, ainda assim, ensinar muitas coisas. Não é uma tratado complexo de alto nível académico, mas consegue condensar aspectos muito interessantes referentes aos vários filósofos, adoptar os seus ensinamentos aos dias de hoje, é incrível que há cerca de 2500 o filósofo Aristóteles tenha escrito que "Hoje em dia, a maior parte das pessoas prefere a vida do consumo e procura o prazer ou a riqueza ou a fama." E isto numa altura em que ainda não havia teledependentes, centros comerciais e reality shows.

Entre breves lições de filosofia, o autor também nos revela curiosidades e excentricidades sobre os vários filósofos.

Por exemplo, a célebre pintura "Escola de Atenas" de Rafael: Platão aponta para o céu, e Aristóteles para a terra. A filosofia de Platão estava mais próxima do racional e especulativo, a de Aristóteles mais inclinada para o prático e analítico, um espírito mais inclinado para a ciência e menos para a teologia.

Pelo meio há histórias bizarras de Pitágoras e Diógenes, problemas de hoje com soluções seculares, etc. Desengane-se quem acha que, pese embora a simplicidade do livro, não vai aprender nada.

i liked this book. it introduced me to a lot of philosophers of whom i knew nothing. he cites one particular source for much of them and i suppose that since most of them have left only fragments of their work it is good to find someone back in the day writing about them. females weren't too well thought of in the time and his writing about them should spark some interest. i didn't know there were any and pulling one from the dialogs of Plato was nicely done. Easy to read helped get me over the usual philosophic hurdles. Basic information and a lot of history and culture make it a good all around read.

Great underlying idea, hectic realization.
Very interesting choice of philosophers/authors whose ideas and value & moral systems are put in motion, but it seems to me that this book fails to give any in-depth insights about any of the great question it ponders. Instead, it offers you a lot of (occasionally quite funny) trivia.
Not a bad read though, my favourite stories were the ones about Onesicritus and Bion of Borysthenes.

Интересен сборник, който представя живота и възгледите на 20 древни философи. За съжаление, не бих могла да му дам по-висока оценка, въпреки че ми хареса като цяло, защото ми се стори разхвърлян и не особено задълбочен във философията точно на тези 20 фигури. Авторът представя всеки един от тях, преплитайки го с възгледите и историята на други техни съмишленици, противници и последователи, което само по себе си не е лошо, но някак мести фокуса и не предава идеите на "главните герои" достатъчно конкретно.

Много ми хареса това, че са представени много по-малко известни имена, за които, признавам си, получих информация за пръв път и този сборник се оказа добра отправна точка по темата.

I'm an absolute ignorant when it comes to antique Greek philosophy. I know nothing about it except a few major schools and their representatives. So as much as I hate popular science, popular psychology and similar, because I believe it devalues the field (because this book does seem to be from that group) I was delighted with everything I read in this book and it definitely sparked my interest to get into antique philosophy more. Problem is, being a laic and finding a starting point.

Um livro interesante e com uma abordagem ligeira, baseada na hisória de cada filosofo que enquadra as suas posições.

Possui bastantes motivos para recomendar a sua leitura, em especial para não especialista e é um boa forma de tornar a filosofia num tema interegrado no contexto do nosso dia-a-dia.

Bastaria tal para ser uma leitura interesante, mas complementa isso com uma boa dose de ritmo, texto fácil e ideias gerais que possibilitam compreender e enquadrar a contribuição de cada um dos filósofos referidos, em especial Platão e Aristóteles, para os quais reserva quase um duelo constante ao longo do livro. Aiás, as melhores passagens ocorrem sempre que o autor tenta contrapor estes dois vultos do pensamento antigo / clássico.

Um leitura quase obrigatória...
