Schlock!: Volume 16 Issue 12

Rate this book
Welcome to Schlock’s first edition of 2021. It’s now ten years since your ’umble editor had the bright idea that it was about time he started editing a fantasy/sci-fi/horror webzine (although it took until April before the first issue saw the light), little anticipating the decade that awaited him. More of that in the spring; for the moment we have a story of suburban wolves; shockingly undemocratic goings on Picklock Lane; and a story of bad odours and revenge is followed by another science fantasy detective adventure of Kassi and Sebastian. Nostalgic memories unfold a tale of folk horror; an ageing hippie encounters a vampire; and a gangster steals a mad a scientist’s invention with chaotic results. Strange and magical things are going on behind the conventional facade of modern-day Edinburgh. Meanwhile, a Clock Criminal travels into the past. The Florentine Vampire sates all his lusts. And Gruntz eliminates another parasite.

A Lot of Variety

It's difficult to rate an entire book with multiple authors when the stories are so varied such as this. I'm not a huge fan of vampires, werewolves, pirates & such, so if you are this is amazing & perfect for that genre. As for me though my favorites in this were For Want of a Nail by Carlton Herzog - Sci-fi & The Hidden Old Bridge of Edinburgh by Sergio Palumbo - Magic, Sorcery & Scotland.

Want of a Nail is well written & surprisingly encompasses not only the contrasting of researchers with & without morals & the consequences of such. It also makes it evidently clear that even those that choose to go down a wrong path can change after all.

The Hidden Old Bridge of Edinburgh hooked me from the very beginning of the story. I don't want to give anything away, so I'm going to be very general in my review as far as things in the story go. Sergio's descriptions of everything, whether he's describing people, places, or things are wonderfully detailed. The ending is absolute perfection. Sergio & this story are fantastic!

I look forward to reading more from both Sergio Palumbo & Carlton Herzog. I'm especially hoping for a continuing story to The Hidden Old Bridge of Edinburgh. Kudos to both of these authors, they are definitely well deserving of them.
