The dead have awakened. Driven by insatiable hunger. In eternal search of fresh meat. The infection spreads like the plague. Nothing stands between the undead and humanity. Is it too late to save the world from disaster?
In this new apocalyptic zombie series from the author of They Come at Night and Human Flesh , we follow events day for day as the world slowly decends into mayhem and the zombies take over. Don't miss the thrilling ride! For fans of The Walking Dead and The Orphan Books .
The story picks up from Day 3. Dorte, a young doctor, desperately tries to find a cure for her sister, who got scratched by one of the infected. It's a race against time, and it's only the beginning of another day in hell. By Day 4, the infection begins to spread across nation borders, and it looks like none of the governments will be able to contain it. Is it too late to save the world? ★★★★★ “Definitely the best day yet!” ★★★★★ “This series just gets more and more exciting” ★★★★★ “had me hooked from the first page” Henrik has turned away to go back inside the bedroom and pack a fresh set of clothes, when Kirsten screams. He spins around and sees Finn come lunging out from Jennie’s old room, throwing himself at Kirsten, who backs away into the wall in a vain attempt to get out of reach. But it’s too late, and Finn bites down hard on her neck. Kirsten’s scream turns even higher and more piercing. Oh, Jesus Christ! Henrik runs down the hallway and grabs Kirsten’s flailing arm. He begins tugging hard to get her away from Finn, but Finn acts like a predator who just caught his breakfast and isn’t intent at all on letting it go. He bears down harder with his teeth, growling and blowing bubbles in the blood from Kirsten’s throat. He also reaches up and grabs her by the grey hair, yanking her head sideways. Kirsten screams again, very high-pitched, but a little weaker than before, and for an awful moment, she looks like a piece of toy torn between two big kids, as Henrik pulls her one way, while Finn pulls her the other. “ Let go of her! ” Henrik shouts, and then, without thinking, he lets go of Kirsten with one hand in order to throw a punch at Finn. His knuckles connect with the old guy’s temple, and his jaw pops open for a moment, as he blinks his dead eyes and staggers backwards, loosening his grip on Kirsten’s hair and allowing Henrik to pull her free. She almost collapses into his arms, and Henrik half drags, half lifts her backwards down the hallway, away from Finn. But the neighbor quickly regains his bearings and comes waddling after them, arms stretched out, the lower part of his face smothered in blood ...
I write stories about the apocalypse so that I don't need to work a real job. I grew up reading Stephen King and still haven't fully recovered. I'm currently ending the world in my new series Under the Breaking Sky.

The Dead Meat series by Nick Clausen covers the apocalyptic/dystopian world he has created on a day by day basis. I highly recommend reading the series in order as each book picks up where the previous book left off.
It is so easy to visualize and relate to the storyline because we are going through it now, sans the zombies. I began reading this before Covid-19, but the characters careless actions read too much like real people’s disregard for others in spreading the disease. All it take is one person to break the rules, one moment of carelessness, others thinking, oh, it will be alright. It only takes one person to set off an explosion.
Day 4 is longer than the other books. It seems to grow as I meet new characters and keep up with the old ones.
I could not stop reading this action packed, heart in my throat, nonstop suspense with tension that left be a bit sore from my muscles being clenched so tight.
OMG…you better be prepared to lose some of your friends along the way, because Nick Clausen doesn’t hesitate to kill them off in gruesome, tragic, heartbreaking fashion.
AND…he ends with my emotions reeling as I mourn, yet I have hope.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Dead Meat: Day 4 by Nick Clausen.
In Day 4, the zombie outbreak strains against the city borders in which it started and begins to spread through the country at large. We continue to follow a motley crew of protagonists as they struggle for survival. But the real question is, is it too late to turn this whole thing around, or is there still hope?
What I really enjoy about this series is that the stakes keep getting higher in each installment. We started from an isolated incident in Day 0 and it's progressed to this nearly unmanageable crisis. Observing that has been thrilling, especially in this book. The horror is more present throughout, but not all of it is from the zombies. Humans can be just as nasty.
As always, I loved the writing. It flows so well that it's very easy to blast through a book quickly.
The characters as always were really entertaining. I think at this point William is my favorite, even though he's not the bravest soul and can be a little selfish at times. Dan helps keep him grounded, and I like their interactions. I did like the medical spin on things with Dorte's perspective, and her progression made a lot of sense. Henrik's POV was alright, but didn't really grip me all that much.
Oh, and can I say how much I hate, hate, hate Birgit? She makes a great villain, but this book had me fantasizing cruel ways she could be killed off. Hopefully something awful happens to her. She deserves it!
I don't really have many complaints, just a couple instances where some character actions didn't quite jive with me on a rational level, but overall it was well thought out and seemed realistic. I shudder to think how bad things are going to get in the next book, and I can't wait to find out!
Dorte is desperate to find her sister a cure. The small scratch Rikke has is growing worse as time passes. But her medical equipment is out of town. If Dorte can make it past the military blockades, she can run the tests and find a cure. Time is running out, and the infection rate is rising. Dorte is sure she can find a cure for Rikke before she advances. But if she can’t, she'll risk the infection spreading to another town. Meanwhile, Dan receives a desperate call for help from his father. He’s more than willing to leave the safety of Holger’s house to rescue his father, but in doing so he’ll unknowingly lead another threat straight to him and his companions.
With each new addition to the Dead Meat series, Nick Clausen flawlessly adds more characters. Each one is woven into the storyline with ease. Each new point of view is incorporated in a way the reader will never doubt or question. Whether it's old schoolmates, long-lost relatives, or past acquaintances. And with this round of characters, the professionals are starting to make an appearance. From doctors to the military, the world is opening up to the readers and allowing them to see how people outside the core group are reacting to the world falling apart.
As each day passes, the stakes are raised. Safety becomes harder to find, and the number of trustworthy people decreases. With the growing crisis, the worst in people begins to show. New villains rise to the forefront, showing the brutality some can inflict to secure a roof over their heads. Readers will find themselves emotionally invested in the characters' well-beings, urging them to survive despite the quickly growing challenges. Dead Meat Day 4 is another fast-paced and intense dive into a dystopian world.
3.5* I know I've mentioned before that the zombie apocalypse genre isn't my fave spooky genre, but Nick Clausen keeps improving as every day of the end of the world progresses. I've been reviewing a copy of each book in exchange for an honest review since Day 1 came out, and I have to say that even though my anxiety is through the roof the entire time I'm reading these books (top tip if you're reading them in bed late at night and you’re easily spooked (like me): make sure to go to the potty first so you don't have to get out of bed anymore!), I still look forward to finding out what happens in the next one.
Day 4 continues in the same vein as the previous books, drawing heavily on our own real-world Covid-19 crisis (which I've often referred to as a zombie apocalypse without actual zombies - although you could make an argument that some folks are just zombies in disguise), except now, you're introduced to more super spreaders and potential heroes as human nature takes over, for better or for worse, and the virus breaks though the road blocks to start expanding across Denmark.
Unfortunately, in Day 4, we encounter some folks we'd rather not see again, and lose some old and new friends along the way, as Nick Clausen is a master at getting you to care for his good characters quickly before ripping them away from you just as quickly and more painfully. But I'm a hopeless optimist, so despite knowing in my heart of hearts that this series can only end one way, I'm still hoping that Dan, William, Mille, and the rest will power through to save the day.
The Dead Meat series by Nick Clausen is back and Day 4 is packed to the brim with action, twists, suspense, and jaw-dropping revelations. Dead Meat Day 4 reunites readers with familiar characters and introduces us to a few new ones. Buckle up because things are only escalating from here. Day 4 picks up where Day 3 left off and plunges ahead full speed. A young doctor is intent on trying to save someone she loves, but in the process, she condemns hundreds if not thousands to death. If only, those two soldiers had done their due diligence, if only that one had stood his ground and said “No. Sorry for your predicament, but you need to turn around now.” That’s just in the first few pages of this book. I have to say that when one of the soldiers says “Being paranoid will keep you alive” I almost cheered. LOL! This book is truly wild as the author weaves together this story bringing things together with a piece at a time. Little by little you see everything begin to connect as the epidemic spreads and more lives are tragically lost. Pieces from book 3 are brought to fulfillment in this story as the author fills readers in on what happened during the night. This book is full of tragedy as shown again and again that it doesn’t take a big wound to cause one to turn…all it takes is a tiny scratch. Is there anything that I don’t like about this book? Honestly…no. This series just continues to get better with each book that the author writes. I was on the edge of my seat in certain moments wondering…what is going to happen?! Are they going to make it?! What is that character going to do?! It’s so intense and the author writes in twists in the right moments that had my jaw-dropping. There were a couple of moments when I was on the edge of my seat and I was like…darn! I wanted things to go a different way! Meanwhile, behind the scenes, I’m willing to bet the author was chuckling knowing that he has a surprise in store for readers down the line. The “ending” of this book…OMG, the ENDING!!! The cliffhanger!! My jaw dropped and I howled! On one hand, I’m heartbroken, but on the other, I’m on the edge of my seat for the next book. Things are already crazy and intense, but…things are about to go to another level. There’s a known threat on one side and on another, there is a secret hiding in plain sight. The revelation of an unexpected truth has me wanting to know what the next book will reveal. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. If you have read the Dead Meat series to this point…Grab. This. Book. Now!!! You absolutely do NOT want to miss out on what happens next. If you are new to the series…grab book one and start! You won’t be disappointed as the author takes you through the zombie outbreak/apocalypse in slow motion one day at a time. I can’t wait to find out what happens next as the world crumbles one town at a time.
I could not wait for Dead Meat: Day 4 by Nick Clausen to launch! I mean, writing another installment of this series during COVID-19 outbreak? What a terrifying world event to deal with while writing about a zombie outbreak that spreads quickly!
When I got the email that the ARC was ready, I dove in immediately and didn’t stop reading until I had finished it!
With Day Four, things are really starting to get out of control…
From trying to slow the outbreak, to setting up road blocks to keep people from traveling, this tale hit on a number of things that are actually occurring now with COVID-19. And oh my gosh, the dialogue about people hoarding toilet paper had me chuckling!
Just like the other novellas in this series, the story is told through the viewpoints of various groups of characters. Each time a chapter end, there’s a bit of a cliffhanger, so you’ll have a very hard time putting this one down, as you’ll want to cruise through to see how everything turns out!
I loved the new characters we met and how there was a focus on the medical aspect of the zombies this time.
My Favorite Passages Every new pandemic disease in the history of mankind has fallen within the spectrum of an already identified family of viruses; there’s absolutely no reason to suspect this will be different. Except it seems different. Very different. Like the sheer speed of the spread of the infection.
Dead bodies don’t stay dead anymore. They get up and walk on.
“Guess people are the same all over the world,” Nasira finishes. “In times of crisis, they turn into their worst.” “Well, let’s try and be the exception, then,” Henrik says, sending her a brief smile.
The zombie girl is still hanging from the side of the station wagon, but then one of her legs goes under the car and is caught beneath the tire. What happens to her can best be described as a doll being ripped apart between two kids fighting over it. Her arm gives way at the shoulder, as the rest of her body is torn under the car, flung around and spit out the front end, tumbling around a few times before lying still. The arm dangles from the window a few seconds, before it falls.
My Final Thoughts Per usual, this was a totally captivating read that was wonderfully written! My gosh I cannot wait to see where the story goes here!
The author uses current events to strengthen the story line in this book, which is my favourite in the series so far.
We catch with Dan, William, Mille and Dan’s family from the last book, as well as meeting some new characters. As can be expected, nothing goes well for our heroes, and the zombies continue to take over Denmark at an alarming rate.
I particularly liked the medical aspect in this installment. The inclusion of people of faith was also great.
I highly recommend that readers sign up to the author’s newsletter to get the free novella, Dead Meat Day 0, as it compliments this book very well.
I can’t wait for Day 5!
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I know I say "this part" has been my favorite part about every day of this storyline but Holy Smokes they just keep getting better as the tension keeps building and the world keeps being taken over by the zombies!
There were so many jaw dropping head popping moments here I wanted to reach in and smack a few people! So many people could have been spared in this episode had they only used a bit more common sense and helped each other instead of every man for himself. I was so saddened by a few of the victims but not everybody can have a happy ending. That doctor and soldier towards the beginning should have know better!
I have said all along during this actual pandemic we have being facing in real life that I felt as though I had fallen asleep while reading a horror novel and somehow got sucked into the story and can't seem to wake up and a few parts here kinda felt familiar especially folks buying up all the toilet paper. In the story I'm like what they gonna do with all that toilet paper? Mummify the zombies? Well I'm just here to tell ya tha last thing that will be going thru my mind if a zombie gets after me is wiping my behind!
*I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
It's day four of the outbreak and zombie apocalypse it's on its way. The government is trying its best to contain the spread, setting roadblocks, and urging people to stay inside, but it seems that it's all in vain. Few people still manage to slide through and that is all it takes.
Day 4 is a bit different than previous books, it has a different tone and it's longer, but I think it's my favorite so far. The storyline is kicking up the intensity with each day, the stakes were never higher. The story is told from multiple points of view. It works amazing with the story. Multiple stories, each very intense, and somehow, somewhere they will come together. :)
I don't know if it has to do with the times we are living right now, or something else, but the story never fest more real, than day 4. The way people created to the outbreak: sheer panic, recklessness, violence, toilet paper grabbing, roadblocks, etc, it's not al that different than how it was/is during the recent pandemic. It makes it a million times spookier and scarier.
It's so good, and it's turning to be my favorite zombie series, ever. :)
We knew the woman responsible for this outbreak wasn’t a good person, but her evil truly knows no bounds. The saying “survival of the fittest” is at play here, and people will do anything to avoid dying. Clausen has run parallel lines from the zombie outbreak to the pandemic we are going through, and while we are all in this together, there will always be people that are more considered about themselves than other people.
That some of them wanted to do what was right is a beacon for hope in this zombie outbreak. But then you have people like Dorte who are so intent on keeping her loved ones alive, that she will break the rules, hoping that she is the exception. People’s mistakes are costing the lives of others, and there doesn’t seem any hope for an end in sight.
This one felt a bit different from the others. Less fast-paced and more character-driven, I loved watching these groups of individual splinter off to do their own thing, even if it was just because of circumstances. A fun addition to the series, I can’t wait to see where we go from here.
Dead meat day 4 by Nick Clausen. This is day 4 of this series. I love it. Dorte, a young doctor, desperately tries to find a cure for her sister, who got scratched by one of the infected. It's a race against time, and it's only the beginning of another day in hell. An absolutely brilliant read. Great story and some good characters. I was on the edge of my seat. Rooting for Dan and some other characters too. I love this series. I'm looking forward to the next book. 5*.
I was sooooo excited for the next book in the Dead Meat series. Day 4 was awesome! Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Day 4 takes you further into the zombie apocalypse and shows how it is quickly spreading. I find myself emotionally attached to certain characters and as you can imagine not everyone will survive. Nick Clausen has an incredible way of bringing his characters to life. This is my favorite so far! It kept me captivated until the very last page. I found myself thinking "oh nooooo". I can't wait for the next book!
Day 4 is the best one so far, a clear step up in every direction. It’s longer than the previous books but still maintains the fast pace. Initially, I wasn’t a fan of the constant introduction of new characters, but now I’ve come to really enjoy their mini-stories. I find myself trying to figure out if they’re one-offs or if they’ll eventually connect back to our protagonist. Overall, this is a great installment that keeps the excitement high.
Things are getting intense as the government tries to control the outbreak with roadblocks and lockdowns. New discoveries are made, and enemies are found. I can't wait to read what happens to the group next. Anything goes in this series!
I like the series. It's in real time. These characters seem to know about zombies from games and television unlike other books where they act like they never heard of them. The main characters seem to run into each other but I like that they get each others opinions on their situation. So far, I'm feeling like William and Dan Will make it even though Holger planned for an Apocalypse. Nobody's safe and some have secrets. I'm waiting for Day 5. My only issue is the books are so short.
Day 4 of the zombie outbreak is here; the apocalypse is looking more likely. The government are setting up roadblocks, urging people to stay indoors and setting curfews. Despite this, people are still finding ways to slip through the net and escape their lockdown, but a few that escape are all it takes to escalate the situation.
Review: After the way Day 3 left me hanging, Dead Meat Day 4 was definitely a welcomed read! The positive reviews that Nick had also gained on this once more added to me excitement. I couldn’t wait to be taken further into the zombie apocalypse.
I found that this book felt especially relatable to the current situation we are in with the COVID pandemic which made the read feel more real. Nick and his clever writing style did a fantastic job at making them links.
More characters are added into the mix in Day 4 and as a result of this you can feel the tensions and frustrations of these characters rising. Self-preservation is becoming key to some of these characters and you can clearly see that some will stop at nothing to survive, you see the ugly, selfish side to humanity as people begin to turn against each other. Just like Day 3 I found myself once more getting frustrated at some character’s choices, which just shows how some people can lose their thought process when faced with life or death situations.
I love Nick’s writing style it is always laid back and easy to connect. His stories usually start off with a bang but I found that this wasn’t the case this time. The first chapter sets the tone and you can feel the despair creeping in instantly. However, the mini cliff hangers I was glad to see continued in this book, keeping you hooked in and in suspense throughout.
The tone of this book was quite different to the other three, it felt a little slower and I felt the actual build up to outbreak excited me more. There was less action but more twists replaced this so it will be interesting to see if the next instalment carries this on or whether this was just the set tone for book 4. I also liked how faith and medicine was brought into this, a battle that has been ongoing for many years, is religion a reason for our being or science?
So despite this not being my favourite book of the series, I still can not wait for the next instalment as once again we were left hanging with unanswered questions at the end!
If you don't read this series your not a true fan of the Zombie Genre....
Best series EVER! And I've read alot. He's brilliant. I pray to God book Five is out already. If your at home and stuck from Coronavirus, I suggest reading these books or any book by him.
I have been waiting for this book to come out because I want to know what happens. Lets just say I was not disappointed. I love the fact that the characters devolopement grows with each book. I love how when I am reading about a set of characters and just when I gets to a good part it switches to another set. So the suspense is there, the sadness, heart break and wondering what is to come. It was intense and kept me on edge. There were some light moments as well. I also that some parts were funny as it seems to coincide with what is going on during this time in the world. I cannot wait to see where this will all go.
The city is on lock down but Dorte, a doctor, escapes to give her infected sister a vaccine... She's able to examine a zombie but will she be able to find a cure? Dan is here since the beginning, he's trying to save what's left of his family. He's very brave in this book, I hope he will live till the end. It's day 4, people will show us what's best in them or the worst... The 'disease' is spreading fast! Can't wait to read day 5!!!!
I'm disappointed in Dennis! He really needs to stop listening to his mom!!!!
This is the next book in the Dead Meat series from Danish author Nick Clausen. It is a gritty, hyper-realistic story that gives a day-by-day account of the zombie apocalypse.
In this volume, we see the zombies spread outside of the area of the original outbreak because most people don’t recognize the true nature of the zombies – that they are truly dead and not just living people that are sick – and believe that there is a cure for the condition. This happens at the beginning within Denmark, and at the end on an international ferry.
I gave Dead Meat – Day 4 five stars on Goodreads. The author continues to put characters in more and more urgent situations and comes up with unique and inventive ways of getting them out again – most of the time, anyway. I recommend not getting too attached to any of the characters, because none of them can ever be considered truly safe.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
It's Day 4 after the outbreak of the "virus", as it is called on the news. But it's not a virus, it's starting to become a full on zombie apocalypse. It's spreading fast, despite road blocks and other restraints and people try to get away from it, but only spread it further.. It's a long day full of action and an emotional rollercoaster for our protagonists. There are also new people, who keep the story suspenseful and diversified. Day 4 is the longest book yet, but it's as good as the ones before. If you enjoyed Day 1 to 3, you'll definitely love Day 4! It's even more suspenseful and the parallels to people during the Covid Pandemie got me cackling.
This is an enjoyable and easy to read zombie series that has interesting characters, a defined ending, and helps the reader understand the role of hope and faith in overcoming disaster. There’s good development throughout the book series and the characters are multi dimensional. The story seems to lag occasionally and, binge reading it as I did, find some of the scenes to be repetitive. However overall I really enjoyed the series and I’m happy I picked up the multiple compilation.
