Beneath Cornish Skies

Rate this book
To an outsider, Cassandra Shaw's life looks perfect. She lives in a beautiful, luxurious house in the English countryside, with a handsome, wealthy boyfriend who insists she needn't do a days' work in her life. But Cassie knows that something is not right. Her boyfriend has grown colder, treating her more like a housekeeper than a future wife. And her time feels empty and purposeless.

Cassandra has always been riddled with insecurities and self-doubt, but, just for once, she decides to take a chance on a new beginning. She answers an advert for a live-in nanny, dogwalker, cook and all-round 'Superhuman' for a family living in a rambling manor house on the rugged North Cornish coast. The work is hard and tiring, but Cassie has never felt so fulfilled.

As Cassie learns to connect with the natural beauty unfolding around her, Cornwall starts to offer up its secrets. Soon, Cassie starts wondering if she was drawn to this isolated part of the coast for a reason. Why was she guided to Foxcombe Manor? What are the flashes of light she sees in the valley? Is it her imagination or does someone brush past her? And who is the mysterious man living deep in the woods?

A beautiful romance with a hint of ghostliness, Beneath Cornish Skies is for anyone who has ever longed to start their lives again.

This was my first book written by Kate Ryder and it was great to find out what a talented storyteller she is.
A beautifully-written novel of self-discovery in one of the most magical settings- Cornwall. The protagonist of the book Cassandra is trapped in an unfulfilling relationship with her arrogant and bossy partner David. Once Cassandra discovers David's infidelity, she confronts him about their future together. To her dimay she realises his vision of it is very different to what she longs for. Cassie answers an ad for a 'Superhuman (an allround helper around a large historical home) and accepts the job. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery and spellbinding legends and stories, Cassandra re-thinks her life choices that let her doubt her own self-worth. She also finds an unexpected soulmate.
There is a touch of paranormal, but it is all an integral part of the setting and atmosphere of this evocative novel. For fans of Discovery of Witches and Jane Eyre.

Thank you to NetGalley and Aria for the review copy. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way.

Blue Skies Ahead.

Stalemated with her live-in partner, Cassie chooses to begin life on her own.

She’s been with David for ten years after moving to his beautiful estate when she was barely eighteen.

He favors a sterile existence without children and adamantly refuses to consider the possibility. Combined with his rejection after her questions regarding his cheating, she decides to leave.

Moving from Sussex to Cornwall to be an all round help to a busy family, she’s thrust in a whirl of activity. As the children, parents, and people of the small town welcome her, her world opens and thaws.

This is a wonderful book about finding inner strength and having faith in your own opinions. The scenery is gorgeous and there are many interesting facts about the Cornwall area. It’s modern, not historical, but a great deal of research seems to have been done by the author.

I was in the mood for a “feel good” book after reading dark thrillers and this filled the void.

I obtained this through Amazon Unlimited.

Cassandra Shaw lives with David Ashcroft and from the outside her life looks perfect, a beautiful house in the country and a handsome and very successful partner. David’s rich, he showers Sandie with expensive gifts, she spends her days riding her horse Caspian, waiting for David to come home and she doesn’t need to work. But, Cassie senses something isn’t right with her relationship with David, he’s preoccupied, distant and rather rude. Cassandra’s parents died when she was a teenager, she feels alone, insecure and doubts her own capabilities.

Cassie reads an advert in a magazine, it's for job working as a live in nanny in Cornwall, she’s had enough of David and she applies. Cassie shocked when she’s offered the job working for Ginny and Gyles Kinsman and she takes it. They have three children Rhea, Tegan and Zac, she’s to look after the children and their horses, cook and sort out Gyles paperwork. Suddenly Cassie’s days are busy, she’s tired and feels a sense accomplishment. Centuries old Foxcombe Manor is full of family history, ghosts and she often feels a presence in the Tudor home. The Kinsman’s are lovely, they treat her like a member of the family and make her feel wanted. Cassie feels at home, she loves Cornwall, it’s a beautiful place and she meets Luke Metcalfe. Luke has a degree in Geography and Environmental Science, he shows Cassie old sacred sites in the area, she feels a real connection to Cornwall, Luke and the spirits.

Beneath Cornish Skies is a wonderful story about Cassie starting again, taking a risk and rediscovering herself. A relationship should be about two people living together, both being happy and a partnership in life. I read it in a day, I highly recommend the book and five stars from me.

Favorite Quotes:

It’s odd how a relationship can end on such a seemingly small, inconsequential incident. But that’s what happened, and however many times I went over the minutiae of our life together there was never any satisfactory explanation as to how we had unravelled so spectacularly without my noticing.

People are usually unaware of the chains of cause and effect created by their actions, but life is a blending of choices that opens doors to new experiences. Essentially, we are constantly reshaping our futures… Just remember, Cass. You may not be able to control the wind but you can control your sails.

My Review:

This was a moody and atmospheric hybrid women’s fiction/romance with ghostly paranormal undertones and a varied assortment of generations of British characters. The storylines were vividly etched with lush descriptions and brain-snagging details while also providing interesting lessons on Cornwall history, marine biology, and botany. I was simultaneously entertained and educated, which rarely happens!

The main character of Cassandra/Cass initially resided in the lap of luxury yet she was not fulfilled and realized her life was shallow and without real joy. I personally don’t know a thing about enduring a luxurious lifestyle but do know how easily one can fall into slogging through a repetitive cycle of dull day-to-day numbness and ignoring troublesome issues we chose not to deal with. However, I cannot see myself turning a blind eye to repetitive, blatant, and overt betrayal and struggled with Cassandra’s continued pull towards a man who had callously and insultingly admitted to doing so. She needed a few pinches and maybe a connection with my favorite purple crocs to her backside to jar her head loose. But that is just me - and I can be fierce. Just ask my quivering husband; I keep the little man in fear. ;)

Many thanks to Net Galley, Aria & Aries Publications and the author for a chance to read and review this book. All opinions are expressed voluntarily.

Ever since I had read Secrets of the Mist by Kate Ryder, I have been looking forward to her latest release. Firstly, that beautiful and enchanting cover image had hooked me from the start.

Secondly the serenity and tranquility that the author conveys thru her writing, I am so much in awe.

Thirdly, the story itself that talks about love offering second chances regardless of the hardships that one may face.

Cassandra has always been a loner who prefers her affinity to nature and animals in spending her days rather than be sociable. An accident that alters her life status finds her charmed and in love with David Ashcroft and living with him. 10 years later, questioning her loyalty to man who hardly values her, Cass takes up an all consuming job at Foxcombe Manor, helping out in all the ways that she can. Meeting Luke as the famed author Hunter Harcourt opens up all possibilities and life becomes free of pain and sadness soothing her weary soul.

Kate Ryder writes an immersive novel about Cass’s journey of self-discovery finding her feet, trusting her heart and acknowledging what is primarily more important in her life which was simply terrific. I loved each character in the book, Ginny and her family, Robyn who befriends Cass and provides a soulful connection, even the ghostly presence that evokes a feeling of melancholia.

I would have loved the final few chapters to a bit more detailed as after introducing Luke’s POV at the end, it would have been interesting to see the discussion between him and his wife Amanda. However, the story leaves the reader with a feeling of warmth and contentment like being cocooned inside a most cherished blanket which is in itself a lovely accomplishment.

Highly recommended!

Atmospheric and magical. Kayte Ryder’s beautifully vivid storytelling swept me away to the Cornish coast. Cassondra is tired of her controlling relationship and finding out her partner is cheating on her is the final straw. she applies for a job as a dog walker/horse wrangler/nanny/house manager for a family in Cornwall and is delighted to get the job. The work is hard but rewarding, different than her pampered past. as Cassondra becomes more and more comfortable with the change of lifestyle she ventures out. when she crosses paths with Luke she is intrigued. She loves his passion for the land and loves learning about the area’s beauty and history.

There was something so elegant about this book. I know that might sound a little strange, but I just found it classy, not even sure how to explain that. In all honesty the Romance part of the Story might have been my least favorite bit. I really liked both Cass and Luke and I definitely wanted them to end up together. But I wish Luke had not been married, that bothered me a little. what really drew me to this story was its sense of place. I seriously felt like I was in Cornwall. I also really appreciated the supernatural elements of the story, I thought that added the perfect touch. A lovely Romance with a lot of heart and a wisp of a ghost.

I liked Cassandra, but I didn’t like this book. At all.

Let me explain.

The author did a great job in developing the character of Cassandra (otherwise none as Cass, Sandie, Sands, etc). She is a twenty-eight year beautiful woman old who has spent the last decade in a long term relationship with a charismatic, rich, self-centered, good looking man, David. David rescued her after the car crash that took her parents and immediately brought her into his rich and glamorous world. At eighteen, young and traumatized, Cassandra was content and happy to go along with it but now ten years later, she realizes she wants a children and family, something David refuses to budge on. As she is wrestling with that and her discomfort in her fancy life she finds evidence of her boyfriend’s infidelity and she leaves, taking a job on the Cornish coastland as a live in nanny/horse trainer/maid for a family with three children. While there, she meets Luke, a local man that she strikes up a friendship with and feels strong attraction to.

What I liked most about this was the description of the natural world. There are a lot of text dedicated to nature – the sea, cliffs, woods, native plants etc. and it as quite lovely. I would love to visit that area in person, you can tell the author has a strong love for it and it showed. I also liked the ghost stories. I always appreciate the history of a place and if it’s been around for centuries, there will be ghost stories.

That said, what I did not like about this book and what made me annoyed was the relationship of the two main characters.

The other irritation I felt was the switching of POV’s. We had read the whole book in Cass’s singular POV until 70% of the way in when it suddenly switches to Luke’s. I don’t mind dual point of views, I actually prefer them when it comes to romance novels to be honest, but if you have gone two-thirds of the book in a single POV, keep it that way. Don’t switch. We also got a third person’s POV about 85% of the way through according to my Kindle tracker and that was super annoying as well, especially because we only saw through their POV twice. It was not necessary. Decide at the beginning how you are narrating the story and then stick with it. I feel like that is Writing 101. *sigh*

I realize I am in the minority of my dislike of this book, everyone on here is leaving glowing 4 and 5 star reviews so they saw something I didn’t but I couldn’t overlook the emotional cheating, changing POV’s and long lectures from Luke to Cassie on different topics that felt like a teacher with a student. Also the ending wrapped everything up too nicely for it to feel legit and earned . If it had focused just on Cassandra and her healing, I would have enjoyed this a lot more. But it didn't so a big NO THANK YOU from me.

I wanted to read Beneath Cornish Skies as it belongs in a couple of genres that I dip into from time to time and also as it's set in a place I've visited and would very much like to again.

Kate Ryder's characterisation skills were evident and I loved her portrayal of our protagonist, Cassandra (Cassie) Shaw. Cassie's spirit and determination really shone through and she was courageous in her decision to leave David Ashcroft, her inconsiderate, controlling, cheating and distant boyfriend of ten years, to pursue different goals and make the necessary changes in her life.

Cassie starts to settle into her new surroundings and it was lovely to read about her experiences as the new live-in nanny working for the Kinsmans. The storytelling by Kate Ryder was so polished and elegant and the plotline had a magical element to it that was sublime. I particularly liked the author's descriptions of Foxcombe Manor with its air of tranquility. I was easily able to picture the surrounding area with images of the crashing waves, the deep blue sea complete with its shimmering shoreline, the sandy beach and breathing in the salty air. There were light sprinkles of romance between Cassie and Luke, the man in the woods and I was really rooting for them.

A terrific, spirit-raising and totally immersive story about self-discovery with shades of ghostliness and the supernatural, that I'm delighted to have read.

Thank you to Kate Ryder, Aria, NetGalley and Rachel's Random Resources for a complimentary copy of this novel at my request. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

If you were to meet Cassie Shaw you would be convinced she has the perfect life. She has a very handsome partner,he's rich showering her with expensive jewels, she lives in a beautiful, luxurious house in the English countryside,he insists she doesn't need to work and she spends her days riding her gorgeous horse.
What outsiders don't see is that she is empty inside, he's not attentive to her and has a roving eye. When the housekeeper becomes his latest conquest she knows she can not stay as it's affecting her mental health too much.
Answering an ad for nanny/housekeeper for a family with three small children is Cassie's way out and her self-doubts and insecurities start to fade. This family living in a rambling manor house on the rugged North Cornish coast makes her feel so welcome, she works hard but feels fulfilled finally.
There is a hint of ghostliness in the majestic manor, she has been drawn to the isolation of the coast. She is finally starting to feel alive again. I loved the descriptions in this book and really felt as though I was there along the coast experiencing the waves crashing and feeling the breeze.
Who is the mystery man she meets along the beach ?
She can feel her resolve crumbling as her former lover tries to draw her back into his life, can she resist the pull?
A not to be missed beautiful romance and self discovery book!

I really enjoyed this novel, I really am liking the theme of 'finding yourself' recently, or re-finding yourself, as so many of us seem to get lost along our journey, bogged down by others expectations.
I thought it was about time that Cassie left her partner, he certainly didn't act as if he appreciated her, and I found it sad it had taken her so long to see the truth about their relationship.
I enjoyed discovering Cornwall, though at times I felt the teaching that Luke gave Cassie, was a bit too educational for me, but it was still interesting.
I enjoyed Cassie's burgeoning relationship with Luke, and though he was obviously not happy in his marriage, it did seem a little hypocritical of Cassie, after what she had just been through in her own relationship, to be pursuing anything with Luke when she realised she had feelings for him.
I would have liked a little more at the end, for me, it ended a little too abruptly, but overall it was a really enjoyable read.

If you want to be transported to a magical place, then "Beneath Cornish Skies" just might be the book you need.

The Cornish setting stole the show here, in my opinion. The beautiful rural locale added greatly to my enjoyment of the book and, if truth be told, was the reason I chose to read it.

The romance was fairly predictable, but then anyone choosing to read a romance will likely accept that likelihood going in. The characters were well drawn, and I enjoyed getting to meet Cassie, the Kinsman family, and their neighbour Hunter Harcourt (aka Luke).

David Ashcroft was a shifty character whom I immediately disliked - as I'm sure was the author's intention.

The only real negative opinion I have about the book is that Cassie seemed too enraptured in Luke's teachings. She was almost fawning, which I disliked. She had little self esteem and seemed in awe of his great mind. I found that grating.

The paranormal elements were deftly incorporated in the narrative. Cornwall is the perfect locale for a ghost or two...

Anyone wanting a comfort read in the form of an enchanting romance will surely love this novel.

When Cassie finds out that her long-term boyfriend, charming, successful Mr Popular, David, is cheating, it's the final straw on a relationship that has never been one of equals. It causes her to question the unique kind of love he has for her and she flees to live in a rambling manor, set amongst the beautiful Cornish landscape, as a nanny, dog walker, horse trainer and general all-round assistant to a wonderful young family.

Romance is off the agenda until she meets a mysterious man in the woods who overwhelms her with his knowledge of the natural world and folklore. However as a new, confident Cassie emerges, old doubts still fester and she can't help wondering if her life truly belongs with David, the man who so many years ago saved her.

What a completely gorgeous story with beautifully written scenes of nature and characters to care for. I loved this atmospheric read filled with magical moments. An addictive story I devoured all too quickly!

This is a wonderfully engrossing and romantic story, with a fragile heroine who has been dominated by her rich and powerful partner for years and therefore can’t see her own worth. I very much enjoyed seeing her blossom, her confidence growing as she found her true self with a little help from friends, ancient magic and spirits in the landscape. The story is set against the backdrop of the dramatic north Cornish coast and now I long to go there again. The author makes you feel as though you are exploring it together with the hero and heroine, learning its history and secrets. A lovely, uplifting tale and perfect for anyone who loves Cornwall with a little magic and thrown in!

This book was a bit of a mixed bag for me. On one hand it was quite readable, the story keeping me turning pages. On the other hand I didn't find it particularly well executed. The story got quite bogged down in historical details and descriptions of nature to the extent that I power read over alot of it. The supernatural piece was never fully integrated and felt a bit tagged on to me. The biggest flaw, in my opinion, is not letting the love story materialize before the very last page. It was a lost opportunity to make the book something special.

Beautiful countryside story of love and fulfillment

A beautiful, rich and warm story set in Cornwall, England complete with tender hearted ghosts and spirits. I loved the way the author included historical and natural details of the area. She writes in such a way that makes it easy to visualize every setting.

I was truly captivated from the very beginning. This is an emotional novel about taking chanced and stepping out of your comfort zone. It's filled with courage, hope and determination. I highly recommend this book and decided from the start not to give anything away. You know where to find that.

To the outsider Cassandra seems to have it all. A luxurious lifestyle and a doting husband, but it is only she who knows the controlling aspect from her husband and the fact that having children do not come into his long term plans. Cassandra always wanted a family, and she thought that ten years of marriage would have softened her husband's attitude.

Unexpectedly faced with a philandering husband was the impetus Cassandra needed to make a fresh start and walk away to work as a full time nanny and general dogsbody to a family with a carefree lifestyle, horses that needed to be trained and looked after and two lovely lively children. Trying to forget the man she had loved and lived with was easier said than done but a new romance also seems to be coming up in Cassandra's life.

Seamlessly told between the two lives that Cassandra led, showcasing a controlling husband on the one side and a carefree life on the other it is upto her to make a decision as to what she wants to do.

Very descriptive, this was such a pleasant read.

I hadn’t realised until after I’d finished this book that it is the third book in the Cornish Cove series. However, the book read perfectly well as a standalone, it flowed and there were no gaps in the story. It is well written and there are some really beautiful and vivid descriptions of the Cornish coast, the scenery, the villages and the beaches. A sense of peace and tranquility really shone through in the writing. There are also some well referenced snippets about the history of the area, as well as some interesting aspects of horsemanship explored and as a previous horse owner I could relate to this. I particularly enjoyed the references to the more natural aspects of horsemanship, such as the comments on leaving a horse unshod and bridles without bits, I found this quite fascinating.

I liked most of the characters who were warm, endearing and likeable, David and Amanda I didn’t warm to so much and very much came across as the bad guys in the story. I particularly enjoyed the scene in the hotel room towards the end of the novel with Cassandra which really put David in his place. I admired Cassandra for her strength and courage in breaking free of her controlling husband and forging a new life for herself in Cornwall. It was a joy to see her blossom in her new environment and her life slowly become her own. It bothered me slightly that both characters were married when they met, albeit not particularly happily married, and there did appear to be a modicum of infidelity happening in both relationships.

I didn’t think the paranormal aspects were necessary and I’m not quite sure why they were there. It just didn’t sit quite right with me in this contemporary novel and the story would have worked just as well without the ghostly sightings.

Beneath Cornish Skies is a well written, pleasant and easy to follow book. It’s warm and uplifting, with a sweet romance and is wonderful escapism. It made me want to pack my bags and immediately head for the Cornish coast (when we can all travel again). The whole story ties up a little predictably but we do love a happy ending! This novel is highly recommended if you love animals, nature and history with a dash of romance.

Thank you to the publisher, via Netgalley, for the eARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

One to get your senses tingling! Different, and most enjoyable.

Cassandra lives a very privileged life, but becomes aware that she is paying a heavy price for it. Her boyfriend treats her coldly and she realises that she has lost her self-respect. With no relatives around, she gathers her confidence and answers an advert for a 'Girl Friday' to a family in Cornwall. Settling in quickly, Cassandra relishes the feeling of satisfaction that each new day brings but she is aware that there is something other-worldly on her periphery.

The first thing to attract me to this novel was the author's name; Kate Ryder can always be depended upon for a good read. This, her latest novel, has a wonderful cast of characters, an excellent story with enough of a touch of magic realism to be believable but not so much as to freak me out. Add in children, animals, a sprinkling of romance and a bit of doubt as to where it's all heading and you have an interesting read. I thought that using different derivates of the lead character's name in each part of the story admirably emphasised the changes in her life. Every bit as good as I expected it would be and a book I definitely recommend. Four stars!

At 17 Cassie is involved in a tragic accident which claims the lives of both her parents. Passer by David stays with Cassie, helps with rehab and ten years later have built an amazingly beautiful life together but something is missing and Cassie needs more in her life.

Having applied for a job at the bottom of the country in Cornwall, Cassie packs up and embarks on a new life with the one man she knows she can trust, her horse Caspian.

She has her work cut out for her working for the new family, running errands, cooking, cleaning, looking after the horses, admin for the farm but Cassie has never felt so settled.

She loves riding in the forest with the children and the horses and its somewhere she feels connected, she needs to know what the forest holds, there are shapes, flashing lights and someone living there.

This book had me gripped from the first page and I was really invested in the story. I was desperate to know more. I loved the surroundings, I love anything set in the country. It's my first Kate Ryder book and it wont be my last.

This is a first read for me with this author, and I found that I enjoyed her work. I am looking forward to reading another book by her that I have found, Secrets of the Mist.
After having read all of Susanna Kearsley's novels, I think perhaps I was expecting something a little more "paranormal", and this did not really have that feel to me at all. Just a few instances where the main character "felt" something unexplainable... until she was made aware that the house in which she was living had its "ghosts." Nothing scary at all. Just slightly confusing in a few spots until you realize she is dreaming or daydreaming.
The "mysterious man" in the woods character was a plus: full of interesting facts about science and nature that was not at all boring or feeling like a college lecture... just sharing information that made everything she experienced that much more fascinating as it drew her in.
Favorite line in the whole book, when the main character was confronted with her former boyfriend trying to "win her back": 'Put some clothes on David... you look ridiculous.'

A pleasantly spent weekend. However, It didn't seem to do credit to the supernatural element (omg I REALLY wanted more more more, why wasn't there more?), the romance side was iffy and I'm absolutely gutted we got the rushed ending. I thought this was a 'finding oneself' sort of book when I started it, I was down for it, I even shushed the husband so I could devour it in one weekend, so the impending will-they-won't-they didn't need to be even a plot point, I would SO have loved a self discovery story after all our heroine has faced thus far. I think we could have had more ghostly action alongside the eerie coastline as I thought the author gave us so much more than we bargained for (I mean, I've basically got a degree in geography and history now). All this said, it was a superb book with lively characters, and I couldn't have spent my dreary weekend much better. Now all that's left to say is how desperately I now want to visit Cornwall!!

I don’t usually read romantic fiction but it was a nice easy read, well written with interesting research into the Cornish location. The landscape and history was the highlight for me and the whimsical ‘ghostliness’ a satisfying sub-plot. It was predictable, but aren’t books like this meant to be? It simply meant it all tied up very neatly at the end and wouldn’t be great if real life were like that!
The other aspect I enjoyed was the insight into horsemanship, especially as Cassandra has a natural approach rather than the traditional. Not being horsey, this is not something I knew of and was interested to learn about.
Overall it was a nice bit of escapism. Who wouldn’t want to be walking the Cornish coast right now with the excitement of a blossoming new romance on the horizon? Thank you to netgalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Loved it!
A magnificent story, taking the reader from the beautiful South Downs in Sussex to the magical North East coast of Cornwall. Both counties are described to vividly, I was immediately transported there.
Cassandra is in a relationship with a man who is controlling and egotistical, but she finds it hard to escape, then she finds an ad in a magazine which will change her life.
The author incorporates romance, magic, historical fact, her love of horses and the countryside into a magnificently woven story of indecision, discovery and learning of one's true self.
I was drawn into this well written story from the very beginning, and found it hard to put down; I cannot recommend it highly enough.
I received an advance copy of this wonderful book in exchange for an honest review.

Whimsical Romantic Fiction....
What a great story with so many historical facts....so fascinating to imagine the long ago history of Cornwall. There is also the lure of magical happenings and ghosts going on.
The main characters, Cass and Luke, are engaging and likeable. I liked watching Cass mature and grow in her confidence and maturity levels. I did not like the characters David and Amanda. They both were egotistical idiots in my opinion.
If you are a horse lover, there is quite a bit of information about horsemanship that I found very interesting.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.
