"The presence of Jesus is all the heaven we desire," says Spurgeon in this inspiring daily devotional. Through endearing messages, Spurgeon gently directs you through each day of the year, sanctifying and anchoring your soul in the Lord. Thousands of Christians have been touched by these passages.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.
Loaded with metaphors and ebullient emotion in accord with the Romantic Era of Spurgeon’s time, this daily devotional was not really my style. I know lots of people love Spurgeon and I am sure he is a fine Bible teacher, but I couldn’t really recommend this book as the dense writing weighed down the ideas presented. Or maybe I just don’t love how each day the topic shifts from one thing to another - normal for daily devo books, but again, not really my style.
Beautifully written truth. My favorite devotional thus far. I'm grieved to leave it behind, but I've been assured Streams in the Desert will not disappoint.
What can I say! Spurgeon is someone that I recommend every time. There is so much conviction, encouragement, truth and so much more to his words. Yes I recommend him to all followers of Jesus Christ.
This version of Morning by Morning has been revised and updated by Alistair Begg for the purpose of making the devotions more readable. According to the introduction, the changes made were to update old english references or terms, and the Bible verses were taken from the English Standard Version as opposed to the original King James Version.
Overall I really enjoyed the devotions. My one complaint is that some of the verses seem to be used apart from their context. They are not what I would call out of context, it's more that because each devotion uses one verse, I think the devotion would have taken a different direction if the entire Scripture passage were used. Although I didn't read every single devotion, I read most of them. I only recall one that I didn't quite agree with, but then one is not likely to completely agree with any author writing on Biblical topics.
I would recommend this version of Morning by Morning to anyone. The only reason for taking away one star is the aforementioned concern about the use of individual verses and phrases from verses.
While some of the day's readings were vague and nothing I agreed with, most of them were thought provoking. I read them at night instead of in the mornings. Nevertheless, they gave me lots to think about. I read each day for a year and I'm glad I did.
Are not angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation ?
Hebrews 1:14
Angels are the invisible body guards of the saints of God. Loyalty to their Lord leads them to take a deep interest in the children He loves. In biblical times, God's people were sometimes visited by angels. This still happens, though we don't see them. The angels still ascend and descend to visit the heirs of salvation ( Gen. 28:12 ), only now their ladder is Jesus Himself.
Seraphim still fly with burning coals from the altar to touch the lips of the people God chooses ( Is. 6:6-7 ).
If our eyes were opened we would see an army of angels protecting us ( 2 Kgs. 6:17 ). Consider the dignity that goes along with this. We are served by the brilliant courtiers of heaven ! We are defended by the greatest army ever known !
This daily devotional is one which I enjoyed each and every time I opened it. Although it is challenging at times, therefore requiring much time to complete each day, I enjoyed it. As I read it again I plan to sit down with a pen and a pad in order to create some of my own thoughts right along with Spurgeon. Some of the writings are, like many devotional books, pointless and somewhat lacking; however, overall it is a daily devotional which gives one a chance to be challenged to "live" the Christian "life."
This is the book that bought me to Christ... as I was reading this book...I came to know the love of my Lord Jesus......I really thank God for Charles Spurgeon...Praise the Lord......
This version of Spurgeon's book was free on Kindle (along with Evening by Evening, and Checkbook). I had read a few quotes from him over the years but quite honestly was a little nervous to read this. People either love him or hate his writing style.
I've been immensely blessed by this edition. It's a highlight of my morning with a cup of coffee before my children need my full attention.
So many devotionals, especially women's devotionals, tend to water down the Gospel or focus on one particular shallow theme. They are akin more to a brief Ted talk, than being a spring board of the Christian faith. I have been in a season of...doubt, and uncertainty about certain facets of my Christian faith and this book is a timely, solid, and unwavering arrow pointing back to God's word, love, and steadfast mercy.
Spurgeon's book gives us hope, conviction, assurance, to face what we may.
Many have been influenced by the words in this book, I am not the first nor will I be the last.
He is indeed, "The Prince of Preachers" for a reason.
More morning reading: There was an event when the prophet was ascended to heaven with Jibril so he could visit heaven and hell. And then he was ascended so close to sidratul muntaha—the sixth heaven that he could hear the ‘Pen’ scribing in heaven. Guess why I’m here to speak from my memory today. More about sidratul muntaha. The book says: it's the place where all info from the above reaches here to be passed to below, and all from below reaches here to be passed to the point above it. One could say Sidratul Muntaha is high in the heaven but not the top most part. Guess why it came in today's reading.
It was excellent, and I looked forward to reading his passage each day. --> Then my dog ate my book. No. This isn't like "my dog ate my homework." She really did eat it. She's an almost 3-month-old German Shepherd/Husky mix, and, apparently, she has an appetite for quality Christian literature. So there's that. Obviously, I didn't finish it. It was good enough to find another copy though. ;-)
Spurgeon is especially good at heartfelt urgency and colorful metaphors. In these devotions, he extracts applications from all over the Scripture, even from single phrases in books of prophecy. It's hard to imagine a more practical set of devotions for the Christian layman, even if they do swell with Victorian romance.
This version was rewritten and updated. I would much rather have read the original. The editing was incomplete and in some places glaring. I admire Spurgeon, and I'm sure his original book would rate 5 stars.
A classic that continues to bless daily. Love how it sours on conversation between my wife and I. I am not a fan of the allegorizing of Song of Solomon as Christ and the Church. But really grateful for this as a devotional.
Charles Spurgeon was a remarkable evangelist who led millions of lost souls to Christ. His anointing was so powerful that even today he’s still influencing our world. These daily devotionals are taken from his sermon notes… This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
This is a great, year-long devotional to begin each day of the year with! Each day's reading takes only a few minutes to read, but is filled with wonderful lessons and encouragement!
I loved reading Morning by Morning. The devotions are easy to ready and not too long and not too short. I feel challenged in my faith to live a life of faith as a result of reading this devotional.
Começando o dia no lugar certo Eu gosto muito do jeito como Spurgeon escreve e ler suas reflexões nessa série matinal sempre me chamava para voltar à Palavra, seja me confortando, seja me confrontando nos meus passos. Vale muito a pena a leitura!
Thank You Lord Jesus for the service of Pastor Charles Spurgeon. Very thought provoking devotions which bring inspiration and encouragement and surely challenges one to be transformed in life
I had never read Mr. Spurgeon's writings prior to this book, but I found them to be very inspirational and true to the Biblical teaching I had received in church. I own a few more of his books, and will be reading them soon. I look forward to each day's passage and I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Awesome insight and encouragement for daily seeking God. Spurgeon affirms the infallibility of God's word, acknowledged the treacherous sinfulness of our nature, and the glory and love of God. A great help in being devout to God.
Some devotions for each day were really great and others were difficult to understand through the many metaphors and I stopped reading when it got a bit offensive. But this is my opinion. I’m sure it will touch some hearts as it did help on the days I needed God’s word.
This classic devotional is inspirational, if a tad outdated. There will be plenty of phrases and idioms lost on younger readers. Its bite-sized daily devotions are good for anyone interested in setting aside time to strengthen his or her Christian faith.
Spurgeon’s works are timeless, because they are all based on God’s timeless word. Reading Morning by Morning at the beginning each day sets the tone for the rest of the day.
