Mere Christianity is C.S. Lewis's forceful and accesible doctrine of Christian belief. First heard as informal radio broadcasts and then published as three seperate books - The Case for Christianity, Christian Behavior and Beyond Personality - Mere Christianity brings together what Lewis sees as the fundamental truths of the religion. Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity's many denominations, C.S. Lewis finds a common ground on which all those who have Christian faith can stand together, proving that "at the centre of each there is something, or a Someone, who against all divergences of belief, all differences of temperament, all memories of mutual persecution, speaks the same voice."
Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.
Quotable, deep prayerful Charles is my favorite to read daily, for inspiration, and thinking and learning about God in a natural, "admiration of the world's wonders" way. Charles so easily makes comparisons, with wind, snow, and other visual descriptions, of God's creation, that stay with you, to pass along to others, I highly recommend any of his books!!
This book is a wonderful daily devotional. I have read several of Spurgeon's books, and this one is just as inspiring as the others. It is written and worded in the old-fashioned "fire and brimstone" style of preaching, quoting straight from the King James Version of the Bible. Spurgeon was a popular preacher in his time, and based on his writings, it is easy to see why.
Restful doctrinal comfort to meditate on and pray through as I go to sleep. Definitely different from Morning by Morning, which energizes and motivates for the day, this book is a tranquilizer in the best sense.
Currently narrating this book as an audio book, and posting the daily readings on youtube. Spurgeon suffered from bouts with depression throughout his life, and there are times when when his mental state is apparent in his writing, but for the most part, I find his writing most inspirational.
Sturdy devotional of old ... pales compared to Gospel a centered devotionals
Devotions from a bygone era where being Laws oriented passed as being Gospel a centered ... sadly. Having read so many devotionals where the liberating Gospel of Christ bleeds from every page with forgiveness, hope, and joyous life, I simply cannot relate to nor recommend this devotional where the threats of the Law are the chief thing. Though I enjoyed some of his analogies and illustrations I did not find Gospel comfort here at all.
Spurgeon could definitely wield his pen artfully, and there are doubtless some truth nuggets herein, but I felt a sort of literary and spiritual seasickness while reading this. Spurgeon operated with the you're-free-from-sin-but-actually-you're-still-full-of-sin schizophrenia that has left countless saints throughout the centuries with spiritual vertigo. That said, his voice is still important and he should be read, as long as readers have grains of salt handy.
I always enjoy reading books by Charles H. Spurgeon. This book is supported by scriptures and with Charles' honesty. His words are very encouraging with real life situations. "Evening by Evening" had many statements that I did not want to forget so my ebook is highlighted through and through. I will definitely read it again!
Evening by Evening by Charles Spurgeon is easy to read with devotions that are just the right length. Reverend Spurgeon doesn't compromise in this devotion and he tells the reader what needs to be heard.
This book of daily readings from a Surgeon is a valuable supplement to one's own reading of scripture. The simple truths written in this book are timeless and an encouragement for one who wishes to live by faith.
The devotions which are written and led by Pastor Charles Spurgeon are always have a true and earnest desire for the reader to know Christ and to have the love to dwell into His Word.
No matter what kind of day that you had, positive or negative, before you lay your head down, let Mr. Spurgeon leave you with some wisdom for food for thought.
Each evening I read a devotional from Charles Spurgeon and Jim Reimann. It was okay, but I will not select this type of devotional from Spurgeon for next year.
