The fae are real. I just pretend they're not.

Black Pine Facility for Wayward Juveniles. The asylum. It's a place where they stick troubled cases like me until we age out or they think they've fixed us.

Newsflash: you can't fix what's not broken. And I may have been thrown into Black Pine when I was barely fifteen, but I'm not crazy.

I'm cursed.

Because the fae? They're real. Gorgeous, ethereal, mythical creatures who can't lie but are experts at twisting the truth. Just one touch, that's all it takes. Just one touch and the fae have power over you. Just one touch and your whole world can go up in flames.

I was warned. He called himself the Shadow Man. With his raven hair and glowing silver eyes, he looked the part, too. He's the one who told me about the fae, who made me promise not to be tricked into giving up everything I have with the single touch of my hand.

I'm... I'm not so good at keeping promises.

Now I'm just about to turn twenty-one. I've kept my head down, constantly wearing my leather gloves as if that's not too little too late. At least they're finally letting me out of the asylum. I've done my time inside here, went through therapy, worked with my psychologists. I'm supposed to be released in two weeks.

That's when Nine, the Shadow Man who once haunted my childhood, returns for the first time in six years with another warning—plus one hell of a surprise.

There's a prophecy. The Fae Queen wants to get her hands on me because of it, and she has the power of the whole Seelie Court behind her. I'm screwed—unless I can hook up with the dark mate mentioned in the prophecy.

Too bad I'd rather die than let another fae male touch me again.

**For fans of Holly Black, C. N. Crawford, and the film classic, Labyrinth, Asylum is the first book in a planned trilogy featuring a wary & independent half-fae heroine, the Dark Fae who has shadowed her her entire life, and her quest to learn about who she really is and why the powerful Fae Queen wants her dead.

When Riley was a teenager, a fae killed her foster sister, and Riley got blamed for it. Riley ends up in a juvenile mental health facility. Over the years, with therapy and drugs, she's managed to half-convince herself that fae don't exist and Nine, the mysterious shadow man who used to visit her and warn her about fae, was imaginary.

She's now 21 and two week away from release, and the shadow man has begun visiting her again.

This is a well-written, well-crafted YA urban fantasy serial that is as much about conditions in juvenile mental health facilities as it is about the light and dark fae battling for dominance and the fae queen who wants Riley dead.

Most of this first episode of the serial takes place in the "asylum," although the reader does get one visit to the fae world. The episode ends on a cliffhanger with Riley finally out of the asylum. (I don't think that's a spoiler). I assume future episodes take place on the outside or in the fae world.

If you like urban fantasy stories about fae, you'll probably love this book.

Asylum is an excellent gritty fairy tale with a compelling young protagonist and very realistic, true to lore fae characters, on par with Holly Black. I applaud the author's taste and tact, as well as the obvious familiarity with the subject matter. A superbly enjoyable book!

Hmmm. This is definitely an intriguing start to the story but honestly what is with author's now adays barely getting started in a story before ending the first book. I mean at this point I could probably leave the story as is because I honestly don't have near enough info to really grab me.. and at the same time, everything is a mystery at this point.. This book could just as easily be a psychological thriller where the FMC is actually crazy just as easily as being a paranormal series.. I can't quite connect with the FMC as it is right now.. I am hoping that as things come to light she becomes much more well rounded, however I feel like the author did a great job writing her. I mean not only is she in an institution, she is actually kind of crazy even though it really seems like she has every reason to be crazy. I think the author did a great job toeing the line of her being crazy and yet everything being true.. which doesn't make the FMC any less messed up.

I think I'm going to continue the series and see if we can get more information but I'm really going to need things to start coming to light pretty soon. We don't have any world building yet because the FMC literally knows nothing except the walls of the institution. I'd like to see where this goes.

Good start

Good start to a different kind of urban fantasy. It’s detailed, but not slow, engaging, but not too fast. FMC still has a lot of growing to do though.

First person. Single POV, Urban Fantasy, Cliffhanger
Rating - upper YA for now
Character age range = 20+

Pros:
- The asylum.
- Characters are very interesting.
- Well edited.
- Honestly, I don’t really know WHO is good... Nine seems obvious, but is he? Is Rhys really a bad guy?

Cons:
- Miscommunication trope

Most intriguing.

Unusual and very captivating, this story ensnared me from the start. With diverse characters, a prophecy, and a hint of mystery, this book wizzed by quickly! It does end on a cliffhanger, but the next book is out so I can't really complain. I know for sure I cannot wait to find out what happens next!

Part of the trilogy. And I simply loved it. The story is so captivating that I wasn’t able to put it down.
We have here a very interesting setting in mental facility for minors, a young woman who spent there 6 years of her life because of traumatic event involving Faeries and obviously no one believes her.
The characters are complex and their actions not always ethically acceptable.
Not much in the romance department although it’s definitely there.
The books 1 and 2 end with a cliffhangers, so two nights in a row I went to sleep at 3 A.M.
The rating is of the entire series - not 5 stars because I had there some minor issues but still I liked it very much.

The Fae as a rule don’t do favors…..

„Asylum“ is the first volume in the “Touched by the Fae” Trilogy by Jessica Lynch, a dark urban fantasy centered in the character of Riley, a half human/fae young woman that was committed to the Asylum at the age of fifteen.

The Black Pine Facility for Wayward Juveniles is a just a fancy name for a haunted place where troubled teenagers are sent to be fix or fall into oblivion. Riley cannot be fixed, just because she is not broken, the creatures she sees are much real, and pretending they are not did not get her very far.

Now six years later, the one man who taught her everything she knows about the fae and warned her about their powers of persuasion is back in her life with rather unsettling news about the prophecy that will unlock her destiny.

Riley’s character is multifaceted, her behavior varies depending on the given situation, which is very much consisting with her six-year journey through the asylum. At times it is heartbreaking to witness how the lack of agency over her own life propels Riley into inner monologues where the only hope is just to survive to her twenty-first birthday and let a life of pointless medication behind. But Riley is a fighter at heart, she possesses a strong will and remains able to hold to her own knowledge and beliefs even in the seemingly most hopeless situations.

Nine’s character, the Shadow Man in Riley’s life, is everything you expected a Dark Fae to be, complex, inscrutable, shady, sexy, dangerous….. dark even

The book is well written, a good mixture of action-packed scenes and very well-done descriptions and character centered scenes, with unexpecting ending that lets you asking for more…. Cannot wait to read Book 2.

“Asylum” plot is set twenty years after the events related in “Favor”, a prequel relating the story of Riley’s parents. A previous knowledge of “Favor” is by no means necessary to enjoy this book, but I will recommend it nevertheless just because it is a great reading.

Cool premise with some interesting ideas. There’s kind of a humor to the story but it’s about some pretty dark things. Riley was abandoned when she was a baby; if you’ve read the prequel, Favor, then you’ll known more of what happened, but Riley has no or very little knowledge about what happened when she was a baby. She has been through foster home after foster home, and is now in a mental asylum because she blamed the Fae for a fire that left her hands scarred and someone dead; she’s been in the asylum for 6 years. She is approaching her 21st birthday, and will finally be able to leave the asylum.

Riley has had a guardian type person, Nine, who has shown himself to her and only her since she was a baby. He has told her about the Fae and warned her about the danger she’s in from them since she was young, but now Riley believes it’s all hallucinations and such. Riley has been through a lot, so she has difficulty trusting in her own mind; when odd things happen, Riley doesn’t know what to make of it. Danger is getting closer and closer to her.

I enjoyed the whole premise for this story. The Fae stuff is fun and has some unique elements there. Interesting characters too! Riley has issues; she’s had to deal with so much, but she still remains strong. Nine definitely has that whole mysterious thing going on; we don’t get a lot on him, but it’ll be interesting to see how he’ll be involved more in the story. The Fae in this book aren’t really the nice type; they are more the shifty type of Fae that you really should just not even involve yourself in. Unfortunately for Riley, she doesn’t really get that option. This story is mainly set in the asylum, so expect scenarios dealing with some tough situations with mental illness. This story also ends in a cliffhanger, so you’ll need to continue the story. There’s still lots of story to be told, but I’m excited to read where this story goes.

Asylum: aka. Mental Institution. Talk about deja vu. What Rylie experiences parallels my own 20 years ago:
* weekly art therapy
* isolation and more isolation
* OCC (I get really obstinate when forced into a prison with therapy.)
* Bad therapists.
* Nurses who are really jailors.
* Terrible institutional food.
* Monthly hour-long visits from friends or family, if you have any.
* Unknown drugs.

Pancakes on Sunday? TV? Nice therapists? Wow, Rylie, you scored. I was so emotionally caught up that I read it despite the flashbacks. Rylie is actually institutionalized because of a traumatic experience with the Fae. She was placed here to hide, but after 6 years, they seem to have found her.

This version of the Fae is the one I like best: Fae so powerful they don’t care about or realize their effects on humans. While they cannot lie, they can obfuscate and omit. Their touch can enrapture or hypnotise humans, and they love to play. Rylie lost her sister from a touch. She also permanently damaged her hands. But sanely, she has realized that blaming fae for her experience only made things worse. Her fear of being touched goes way beyond self-preservation.

Both a light and a dark fae are vying for her attention. The light fae, although the cause of her sister’s death, actually seems approachable and likeable, even though Rylie hates him. The dark fae has been her protector, whom she secretly loves. I feel like she has daddy-love, and it turns me off.

Strangely enough, I downloaded this a while ago and thought I had read it. I even tagged it as awesome. It really is awesome, and I am glad I found it in my pile of ebooks.

I actually read this whole book instead of DNFing it, and let me tell you- I regret it.
I kept expecting something to happen, something to pick up, for the MC to get a fucking clue but just... Nope. Not even when she finally gets the hell out of the asylum somewhere around like 80%
Can you imagine how boring a book is and an inpatient who's locked up with everything tightly controlled? Yeah, that's about how interesting and exciting this book is.

Riley is all over the place with what she believes. One second she's presenting nothing is real for the staff while secretly knowing it is, then she's convincing herself it's all hallucinations, then back to knowing it really happened, etc etc on fucking repeat for 80%.

She has multiple freak outs in the book too which (perhaps unfairly) I just found annoying AF. Basically, she's a weak girl.
Weak minded, weak willed, and over all a total sheep of a person.

The only hurrah moment she has in this entire book is when she sends Nine away for basically being a fake friend her entire life since he was actually ordered to be there protecting her, he wasn't doing it by choice like she thought. Then a couple of pages later when she runs into a problem she's calling him right away and panicking when he didn't come. She's weaaaaak.

This book ends on a very blah cliffhanger, and I will definately not be continuing with the series.

>Book Review – Asylum
>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st in the Touched by the Fae series and ends in a cliffhanger. Riley is an orphan who bounced around the foster care system and ends up in an asylum. He habit of talking about the fae being real, along with her “Shadow Friend”, Nine, cause her to be locked up in an asylum for 6 years. Her foster sister was killed by the fae, but the humans felt that Riley might have been the killer. Riley’s experiences and how she copes in the asylum are really interesting to read. She knows what is real, but plays the game in order to be free when she turns 21.
>Nine appears to Riley throughout her life, keeping her company and teaching her about fae. He tells her to never touch a fae, causing Riley to have a fear of touching anyone. The good guys and the bad guys are hard to tell apart in this book, as both the light and dark fae help and hurt Riley. The frustrating aspect of the story is when Riley refuses to let None explain things to her at first. She gets upset and then just sends him away.
>This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this book 4 stars. I love how creepy and realistic this fantasy world is. I hope Riley finds all the answers to her questions.

Not for me

The heroine of this story is a weird contradiction of someone who has been taught her whole life not to touch anyone because anyone could be absent kill. But one other hand despite being locked into the asylum she has has smex with so many people that she can’t even figure out her number. Her hero is an amazing guy who is virgin until her, because he was waiting on his fated mate. He waited for her for a century. She says at one point that she would even sleep with guys to throw them in his face and get a reaction. He knew she was his mate, so I’m sure it destroyed him, and it didn’t add anything to plot line. I don’t know if the author was just being gratuitous or if she was trying to write the female version of the manhores we see so often these days but I didn’t find her likable enough to get over that big of a personality flaw. Some might enjoy this, but it’s definitely not for me.

Riley Thorne has spent most of her life in Black Pine Facility, a mental asylum, starting from when she was fifteen. Nine (who Riley has recently discovered is a faery) warned Riley about the dangers, never to let a faery touch her.
Nine soon returns for the first time in six years, just as Riley has turned twenty-one and is released from the asylum she has been trapped in.

What's next in store for Riley?

This novel was a surprisingly fun read, I don't normally enjoy novels with asylums as a setting but this one really surprised me in how well it was done and how well the plot was executed. It also features a strong heroine and the secondary characters have substance, even though this was a fast paced and quick read!

DNF - Quit at 32%.
This is a very heavy & disturbing story. I hoped it would get better, but by 32%, I just couldn’t handle anymore. Other readers might enjoy this, but this just wasn’t for me. There is entirely too much inner dialogue from Riley to the point I quit. And other than the situation she’s in, I couldn’t get a feel for her, so she felt sort of flat. The first third was just very dark & depressing, & couldn’t keep my interest.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way to short & my time is to important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

It dragged on too much

I was really intrigued by the sample I downloaded and I felt this story had great potential. Great plot and characters however the author drags out the main character's experience in the asylum, I felt she just wrote words for the sake of writing and found myself skipping pages! The book doesn't really start to get anywhere until 75%!! And then abruptly ends, I found this frustrating. Also theres not much dialogue between characters, your mainly reading inside Riley's head. This could have been a great start to a trilogy as I love the plot idea, however due to unnecessary dragging on and on, I wont be purchasing the other books.

Riley is in an Asylum because she watched a Fae kill her sister (foster) and told the authorities about it during questioning. She has been visited by another Fae from the time she was small, this was not the one that killed her sister. While she has been institutionalized she has been made to believe that Fae are not real. Just before her 21st Birthday she gets another visit and is taken away from the Asylum. The rest of the story is for you to listen to and enjoy. This is a very good read. You will be anxiously waiting for the next book in this series. I was given a free copy of this audiobook at my request and this is my honest review.

Fae fantastic

This is a great story for some reason I always enjoy stories where people either misunderstood or believe to be crazy or whatever I read a series by marie Claremont The 1st book in the series is called dark lady and this series I woman is committed to a mental institution by a male family member The books are extremely different because in the 1 it's a stalk romance and this 1 is a contemporary paranormal but some of the complexities with the emotional difficulties that the patients Must cope with

I highly recommend both series check them out if you read this series please read the prequel 1st It's called favor

The fae are real but they should never be spoken about. Well she did and now she has been locked away as being crazy. Now after years inside she is due to be released when he reappears. There is something the queen wants from her she because of a prophecy. To get safe she will need another fae to touch her well no way is she going to let that happen again. Will she stay safe? Will she touch a fae again? See how she gets on this time

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Riley is not the brightest bulb

Granted, she's spent most of her life in insane asylums, but her intelligence is not far past elementary school. I mean, she loves just burrying her head in the sand and pretending her problems are not real. *sigh*

This really isn't a bad book, but I am frustrated with the h's lack of intelligence. I also really don't understand the soul mate thing with Rys. I mean, how does he know or not know if she is his soul mate?

I was happy with the storyline and the concept. I liked how Riley has been developed but Rhys and Nine are just enough developed to keep my interest. I do believe there was to much going on in the Asylum. It was pretty repetitive. I know it was an important part of the book but it was the same thing over and over. I recommend it and I'm going to be reading the rest of the books.

Repetitive

I'm only 30% through and I'm getting really sick of how much she's repeating everything. We get it.
She doesn't like to be touched.
Mystery Fae killer her sister.
She's locked up.
She's locked up.
They have routines.
She's locked up.

Emotive Storyline. Cunning, Cruel Fae!💔😭😳🙏🌲
3.5 Stars 🌟
Asylum (Touched by the Fae #1)

An ok read. I really felt for Riley throughout. Nine is hiding too many secrets but Rys is a completely delusional, narcissistic psychopath, in my opinion!😳 I will be reading the next book but I'm hoping it lightens up a bit & Riley starts to get answers!👍

This series is like a train wreck... I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it. It had so much potential, and such good characters and a good story line. But there was no true depth and it was flat. The main was whiny and shallow. This could have been a series that was all consuming. Sadly I was just frustrated through out all 3 books.

Definitely a binge read

A wonderfully detailed tale of a young girl who is nearly out of the asylum, when the fae that caused her to be there reappears in her life, upsetting the applecart yet again! Lots of detail...hints of what may be coming...but definitely a series you will want to read in its entirety...the ending of this one leaves you hanging!!!

I loved this, but I truly hate how it ended. It's like one book that's chopped into smaller ones to keep someone buying them. I've read many of those over the years. Yes, I'll probably continue the series, but I'm buying them all at once so I don't feel this disappointment again. Just a fair warning to others who read this or want to.

Unique

This was unlike any book I've read before. I loved it. At times I was frustrated with Riley wanting to go back but I'm glad she saw the light. I stayed up way to late reading this book. I'm just glad this series is complete already and there's a spinoff of the character I wanted to learn so much about.
