For more than a decade, Laurel Ross has been a lady-in-waiting at Robert the Bruce's royal court, a place where money is power. Laurel is the fourth out of five daughters, and the only one unwed. While Laurel isn't exactly a pauper, her father, the Earl of Ross, has already paid four large dowries. Sent to court to find a husband, Laurel's once youthful hope has turned to bitterness as one friend after another marries. Her viperous tongue has earned her the title of “hellion”. Will any man accept a bride who comes with such a small dowry?
Every man is guilty of all the good he didn't do...
Guilt is slowly eating away at Brodie Campbell. When Brodie's betrothed unexpectedly dies, Brodie's guilt doesn't come from the woman's untimely death. It comes from the relief he feels that he's no longer bound to her. Brodie isn't interested in a biddable and mild bride. Intrigued by the fiery Laurel Ross, Brodie wonders if this shrew can ever be tamed. Armed with wealth and charm, Brodie welcomes the challenge. Will this spitfire relent long enough to find love with a man who tests her patience?
When a wager puts their lives in peril, Brodie and Laurel discover trust is earned, not given.
If you love a steamy rags-to-riches romance, then you're sure to enjoy Celeste Barclay's sizzling new Highlander romance, A Hellion at the Highland Court.
Welcome to Robert the Bruce's Highland Court, where the ladies in waiting are a mixture of fire and ice. The Highland Ladies, the STEAMY spin off series from Celeste Barclay's The Clan Sinclair series, returns to the Medieval royal court for love and intrigue.
Celeste Barclay, a nom de plume, lives near the Southern California coast with her husband and sons. Growing up in the Midwest, Celeste enjoyed spending as much time in and on the water as she could. Now she lives near the beach. She's an avid swimmer, a hopeful future surfer, and a former rower. Before becoming a full-time author, Celeste was a Social Studies and English teacher. She holds degrees in International Affairs (BA), Secondary Social Science (MAT), and Political Management (MPS). She channels that knowledge into creating rich historical romances that bring the steam.
The is the best of the best thus far. A Hellion at the Highland Court by Celeste Barclay is book nine in The Highland Ladies series. This series is a spinoff of Barclay’s The Clan Sinclair series.
Lady Laurel Ross is the longest serving lady-in-waiting at the Highland Court and daughter of Tormud Ross, the Laird of clan Ross. She arrived at Court seeking a husband but circumstances and her small dowry have kept her single. . Laird Brodie Campbell of Glenorchy is the leader of the largest cadet branch of the powerful Campbell clan. The recent death of his wife has him at Court reporting to the King.
Laurel needs a husband. Brodie wants a strong wife. She’s a hellion, and that’s what he thinks he needs. Laurel and Brodie quickly develop a respect and passion for each other. They may be each other’s solution, but not everyone agrees. Trouble brews.
Barclay continues the streak with another expertly penned novel. She maintains the series continuity, and the novel works well as a standalone. These characters are some of the best to date. They’re as strong, vibrant, and well-rounded as leads in the previous books. The extensive plot holds the reader’s attention throughout. It’s action-packed, and there are twists and turns aplenty. I couldn’t wait for the next chapter, and I didn’t want it to ever end. This is my new favorite in the series. I rate A Hellion at the Highland Court5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to readers of romantic suspense and medieval romance.

Having had multiple horses🐎🐎🐎 most of my life, the author's knowledge of horses is laughable but fun.
I've loved every book in this series so far but this one....this one, in my opinion, surpasses all the others! Omigosh, I absolutely adored Laurel and Brodie's story!! Between the danger and the passion, this story will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.
Laurel has been a lady-in-waiting to the queen at the royal court for over 10 years and isn't very well liked, just because she has a mind of her own and says it like it is. I had to giggle a few times at what comes out of her mouth, especially when she's angry! lol When Brodie, the laird to his clan, arrives at the court, he inadvertently gets involved in a bet that says he can't tame Laurel. He refuses to agree to the bet but little does he realize the trouble that will ensue. When he meets her face to face, he sees her for who she really is....a woman with a wild spirit who only wants freedom.
The passion and the love between these two is so beautiful and empowering. Together they will fight battles, abductions, danger and add a few twists and turns as well! Brilliantly written and as of now, this is one of the best books I've read this year!!
I received an ARC of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Another wonderful addition to this marvelous series! Each one has been exciting with a little danger, murder, angst, wit and of course a hero and heroine that make the sparks fly!
Laurel has been in service as one of the queen's ladies in waiting for many years. She is a little outspoken (oh yes!) but it is a way to protect herself from how she was treated when young.
Then Brodie comes to court and the journey begins! Everyone thinks Laurel needs to be tampered down, but he begins to understand her. Intense and romantic, these two make you want to sigh.
In life, when suffering abuse at the hands of those who should be protecting you, one can either become a victim or a survivor. Lady Laurel Ross is a survivor. Unfortunately, having overcome impossible odds through sheer strength of will does not necessarily make Laurel a likable person. She has a superior intellect and uses it to cut down her detractors with incisive comebacks and scathing retorts. A wager changes the course of Laurel's life. Brodie Campbell is a witness to the bets being placed, thereby arousing his curiosity. Bumping into Laurel at a most inopportune moment, Laurel piques his interest and the Laird quickly realises that Laurel has more character than she is given credit for. The romance in this novel builds slowly as Brodie sets out to win Laurel's trust. At the same time, the attacks on Brodie and his clan escalate at an alarming rate, leaving him stretched very thinly. This well written Highland romance moves at a fast pace, leaving the reader breathless as one attack follows another. There is both adventure and romance, but the descriptive passages of the Highland scenery bring the story to life. Brodie is everything a woman could want in a man, as he is not only protective towards Laurel but also acknowledges her intelligence and values her opinion. Laurel may well have been a bitter woman, scorned by her family and the King's Court, but under Brodie's gentle influence, she begins to heal and regain her joy. However, with so many people working against them, the reader despairs of the couple ever reaching the fulfillment of their dreams. I received a copy of this well-written, standalone novel as a gift from Booksprout and this is my honest and voluntary review.
A Hellion at the Highland Court, by Celeste Barclay. Well now, I am surprisingly pleased with this novel. I was so much intrigued that I read through the night. Wow. Laurel and Brodie are the dynamic duo couple in historical romance novel. I found the book easy to read, although there were some wordings that could have been replaced with simple ones. I still did have some idea of what was happening in the scene. This does not in include the Scottish Brogue or Galiec. I loved, loved that the writer stayed true to the reality of the times and the culture. This leads to me finding the book very realistic. In every sense of the word this book was realistic. I enjoyed the entertainment and believe me Laurel and Brodie brought a lot of entertainment to the romance part of the book. There are some characters who bring some witty moments to the story and there are some that you hope gets their but kicked. There are a number of scenes that has action that I loved. These scenes moved the story along which made the story for me all the more intriguing. The writer did a great job of keeping me focused on the story, however there are some scenes I think that were a bit drawn out when it didn’t need to be. There are only a few of these scenes, but this didn’t detour me from finishing the book. The suspense, mystery and crime had me hooked to the end. The passion and romance that Laurel and Brodie share is hot and oh so very steamy. I don’t think that they came up for any air! I recommend this book. Until next time my fellow readers... read on! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A Hellion at the Highland Court by Celeste Barclay I enjoyed this spicy medieval original of “Taming of the Shrew” with a dash of “Rags-To-Riches” of the heart for good measure! This is a story of years of emotional cruelty that changed a young girl who was left all alone to live among the wolves of King Robert the Bruce’s court. She learned how to weld her sharp and scathing tongue as the only way to protect herself from being hurt and to keep everyone at bay. Until one day a confident and revered Highland Laird of one of the most powerful clans, the Campbells, recognized the pain and sadness behind her sharp words and knew she didn’t need taming she needed understanding and freedom. He decided he was up for the challenge, if he could keep her alive long enough to convince her of that. I enjoyed the different plot twist and the storyline that is action packed with grueling sword fights, danger, spies, lies, deception, murder, treason, angst, kidnapping, along with a red hot romance that will keep you warm all night long! My favorite part of the book is the epilogue! I loved their story was carried out 20 years to the future! Great HEAs!Happy Reading♥️ Genre: Medieval Historical Romance. Rating: Adult for detailed hot and spicy open bedroom door love scene descriptions; contains some profanity (some random f-bombs), and some very dark detailed and gruesome violence.
A highland tale of love, loyalty, treachery, deceit, wagers and battles both won and lost. This is what you will find between the pages of “A Hellion at the Highland Court” by Celeste Barclay. I loved how Brody could see past Laurel’s protective veneer to the true person beneath and how she opened up to him once she realized she could truly trust him. I felt this pair was a wonderful match on all levels and they had that intuitive familiarity that added more depth to their relationship. The story did feel a bit long though and the momentum slows for me when the author goes into in depth descriptions of who’s who in the Clan world. Readers who love the intricacies of Clan history will certainly appreciate this information.
I really loved Brodie and Laurel together. I also loved that there were so many characters that I could love and hate throughout the book. I was not expecting the twist but I thought it was great! The epilogue was also super sweet.
DNF at 68%. Nothing wrong with this but I preferred when it was focused on the couple. But this was so plot and action heavy which I was not really interested in. So many clans and villains there didn’t even matter. I was lost. Their relationship played second fiddle to the unnecessary conflict. Which is a shame because I really loved Laurel and Brodie. He called her a thistle because she was prickly. 😭
Another book in the series of the lives of the Ladies in Waiting to the Queen of Scotland. Lady Laurel Ross, daughter of an Earl was abandoned at court at five and ten. Her family cut her off and never cared for her. She became bitter and earned the name "The Shrew of Stirling". Extremely intelligent and resourceful she found a secret way to earn coin to provide for her lady's maid, the men who guarded her and for herself. Only her Lady's maid Ina knew that Laurel really did have a heart of gold and would do whatever it took to care for those she cared for. Other people just stayed away from her viperous tongue and aloofness. But no one ever bothered to take the time to look beyond the facade. It was not until Laird Brodie Campbell of Glenorchy arrived at court that both their lives changed. At six and twenty Laurel was on the shelf. King Robert issued a decree that none of the ladies in waiting could wed until Lady Laurel had wed. Well, if anyone was on the fence in regard to Laurel, they were now in the camp of hating and resenting her. All the ladies made it clear they disdained her and resented her. They did not hold back on their cruel and unkind comments. They were hateful. My heart went out to Laurel as she was misunderstood and no one really knew what was going on in her life. No one ever took the time to get to know her. She was "The Shrew of Stirling" and that's all she would ever be. When Laird Brodie Campbell of Glenorchy arrived at court he was intrigued by "The Shrew of Stirling". It seemed he saw beyond her facade and he was attracted to her. The more time he spent around Laurel the more he saw that there was more to her than people gave her credit for. He started figuring things out about her and he admired her survival tenacity. Brodie was friends with Laurel’s older brother Monty and his second Donnan. This story is so complex and thrilling. There is plenty of action and intrigue as one reads on. The secondary stories are fascinating that tie directly to Brodie and Laurel. One is even a little frightening. There were moments where Laurel’s true nature came through and saved her life and each time Brodie could not believe how fate had bestowed on him the most perfect wife. Despite the danger to Laurel and Brodie they persevered and were able to thwart any plans to destroy or kill them. The epilogue was so nice to read. It was the happy conclusion of so much pain, sorrow, anger, danger and near-death situations. I highly recommend this book. It is inspiring.
KINDLE UNLIMITED and I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Wow, I have read all the stories in this series. They are all super in their own way. But this story tops them all. If you have read the series you will recognize some of the characters from some of the other stories. All the books can be read as stand alone, but in my opinion best read in order. Anyone who has owned or worked with abused animals or children will understand Laurel Ross. No matter if it is an animal or person, when taken from all you know and left with strangers they fight back. Fear, anger, loneliness all can cause a person to use bad behavior and a sharp tongue to hid behind. Laurel has been at court eleven years, without her family checking on her. Her brother Montgomery does come to court but not just to see her. They have a love hate relationship common to siblings but theirs has a longer history. As a young girl she made mistakes in who she thought was a friend. After all these years she is known for being a mean, nasty person that most leave alone. Laird Brodie Campbell is a man eaten up by the guilt of his very young child bride being killed. He has come to court to let Robert the Bruce know what happen. Tired, beaten down he stops to eat and over hears others speaking of a hellion of a woman at court. When he hears who it is they speak about he is shocked that her brother is there and not standing up for her. He decides to meet her and see for himself what she is like. Oh, my these two are about to set the royal court and many clans on their ears. What these two have to go thru and put up with is amazing. There is betrayal, intrigue, twist and turns you will not expect or see coming. They will learn that trust, love and faith is given not leaned. This is a steamy fast-moving story. You will laugh, cry and hold your breath in parts. Once you start this book you will not be able to put it down. I do hope you get your copy, grab a cup of coffee and turn out the world. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am voluntarily giving it.
Celeste Barclay has brought us another wonderful story in ‘The Highland Ladies’ series, and it is filled with vivid characters and memorable scenes. If you’re already familiar with the series, you will recognize the name of Lady Laurel Ross. She has a terrible reputation for possessing a shrewish temperament and an unpleasant personality. After more than a decade as a lady-in-waiting for the queen, she is told that she must marry within a few weeks. Or else. Laird Brodie Campbell is a man dealing with complicated clan related issues and pressures, and guilt that he carries but really doesn’t deserve. He is a strong man and really needs a wife who can be a partner to him in every way, not just a decoration for his Castle.
This story is fast paced and loaded with action. It is so well written that you really see it all unfold in your mind’s eye. Parts of the story are startling and parts are extremely dramatic. We get a whole different view of Laurel and she actually becomes an admirable character as we learn about the psychological and emotional pain with which she has been dealing. Brodie is exactly the hero she needs and they really make a well-matched pair. They are mature enough to be honest with one another, and that, along with their sizzling chemistry, makes them a force to be reckoned with.
There are great secondary characters in this book, especially her brother and his best friend. The twists and turns and intrigue make this a wild ride. I thought the epilogue was terrific. I hope there will be a future series involving the second generations of the Campbells, the Sinclairs, the Sutherlands, and those we have met connected with the Highland Court.

Celeste Barclay is one of my favorite authors! She never fails to astound me with her feisty heroines and her larger than life heroes! And this heroin, is feistier than ever. The Highland Ladies Book 9 is a fantastic edition, the best yet in the stories of the lives of the Ladies in Waiting to the Queen of Scotland in the court of Robert the Bruce. This is a magnificent series to read.
This brilliantly written tale unfolds beautifully with all the pain, grief, hurt, drama, betrayal, intrigue and searing passions culminating into a love that was predestined, hard fought and hard won. Celeste holds you spellbound throughout this action packed tale filled with wit, humor, passion, mystery and so much more. She can bring you to tears one minute and have you laughing the next.
The characters are so well crafted in part due to the fact that Celeste has an amazing insight into human nature which she expresses in her writing.
Laurel is an intelligent, spirited, truly good hearted woman who is misunderstood, shaped by her experiences and her feisty tongue is but a mechanism of defense. Laird Brodie Campbell of Glenorchy is a strong and dashing man, a man of conscious, living with the guilt of his wife being killed, a guilt not his own. And yet when he hears of Lady Laurel’s reputation he’s determined to meet her. And when he does sparks fly an the chemistry is off the charts. The secondary characters are intriguing and interesting, lending much to the story and stories within this wonderful tale.
The dialogue was enticing and vivid filled with wit and words of love. The imagery was evocative and colorful. This clever storyline and plot is filled with intrigue, mystery, twists you don’t see coming and so much. I loved the book as I love all Celeste’s stories! Though it can be read as a stand-alone I’d recommend reading the whole series. You won’t be sorry!
Than you so much Celeste for such an exciting, passionate love story!
Laurel has spent the last 11 years at the royal court by a family who don’t wish to deal with her. Laurel’s anger and sadness lead to her attitude and moniker as “hellion.” However, deep inside, Laurel just wants to get away from the terrible situation her father has left her in. She is far too intelligent to believe that she has remained a lady-in-waiting this long due to parental concern for her future. This has left her feeling hurt, unworthy, and unlovable.
Her brother and the king and queen know that for her to wed, even without a dowry, time is running out. Brother, Monty, has less than a month to find a suitable husband for a sister he has long viewed as churlish, not knowing the depth of her daily struggles. These siblings struggle to maintain a relationship when Monty fails to step up again and again to defend Laurel.
Brodie has the Campbell laird and seems to appear at the right place at the right time to defend a woman’s honor during an argument when her own brother remained silent. Brodie needed to meet the shrew that had the men wagering and blustering. He was shocked to meet Laurel, a whip smart woman with sad eyes. He saw how the courtiers harassed her. This was a puzzle he needed to solve, and the more time he spent with Laurel, the more he was drawn to her strength and wild spirit.
After a bumpy introduction, the couple build a relationship and romance many envy. Both Laurel and Brodie have enemies and have to fight through battles and betrayal to stay together. This is a story with lots of romance, poignantly sweet moments of heart tugging tenderness, and situations leaving the reader eager to turn the page. There is a satisfying HEA that ensures the couple a long and happy life, and peace in the highlands for generations.

Another fantastic installment of The Highland Ladies Series. Laurel Ross has served as a lady in waiting to King Robert's wife for 11 years. Laurel is the only unwed of the Earl of Ross' five daughters. Between her lack of dowry and nickname, "The Shrew of Sterling" Lady Laurel may never marry. But unfortunately King Robert decrees that no other lady in waiting may marry until Lady Laurel is wed. This pressure adds to the already ill-will between Laurel and the other Ladies. The relationship between Laurel and her family is estranged, at best. Her feelings are quite bitter after being left at court and not being provided for and she is not looking forward to the prospect of marriage. Upon his arrival to Sterling to meet with King Robert, Brodie Campbell hears that Lady Laurel requires a husband and is not pleased to hear the way the men are speaking of her. Brodie has memories of Lady Laurel from previous visits to court although they never spent much time together. Brodie is willing to see if he and Lady Laurel will suit and if she is interested, pursue a courtship. Unfortunately members of other clans as well as the other ladies in waiting have other plans and cannot resist making things difficult for the couple right from the start.
This is a story of trust, family, love, loyalty and finding ones true self. Things are not always as they seem and sometimes we need to become someone else to survive situations that we are put into. Every time I read an installment of The Highland Ladies series I think "this is the best one yet" and each time, Celeste Barclay outdoes herself with the next book.
Lady Laurel Ross has been the Queen’s lady-in-waiting for eleven years, almost half her life. As the fifth daughter of Laird Ross, she will have almost no dowry to encourage the attention from any of the men who come to court. The other ladies-in-waiting have dubbed her “The Shrew of Stirling” because of her sour demeanor toward them and the men at court. To earn money, she has become an exceptional seamstress and embroiderer. She does this secretly, then disguises herself as she sells the finished gowns to a local merchant. Unbeknownst to the ladies who have the funds to purchase these gowns, Laurel secretly gloats that the women don’t know it is her designs they wear, while they look down their noses at her and whisper about her.
Laird Brodie Campbell has been summoned to court, but he decides to spend one night at an inn before he ventures into the devious atmosphere at Stirling Castle. He hears a tale that the king has ordered Lady Laurel Ross be wed before any other marriages can take place. Several men from other clans venture a wager that Brodie cannot tame the shrew, but he declines the wager. Instead, he meets the lady, unaware of who she truly is, and finds her to be intriguing. He sets out to win her favor, finally realizing she is “the shrew.” He believes her to be an educated and strong women, just the kind of woman to help lead a clan.
While the two are enjoying one another’s company, there are schemes being set into motion that will put them both in extreme danger. Surviving is paramount to realizing their goal of a happy life.

For more than a decade, Laurel Ross has been a lady-in-waiting at Robert the Bruce’s royal court. Laurel is the fourth out of five daughters, and the only one unwed. While Laurel isn’t exactly a pauper, her father, the Earl of Ross, has already paid four large dowries. Sent to court to find a husband, Laurel’s once youthful hope has turned to bitterness as one friend after another marries. Her viperous tongue has earned her the title of “hellion”. Laird Brodie Campbell arrives at the court & is intrigued by the fiery Laurel Ross. This is the ninth book in the series & is as fresh as the first. Once again I was drawn in from the start & was determined not to read into the night to finish it but like all good plans I failed miserably & finally read the lovely epilogue at 03:30. Wonderful characters who have lovely depth, a fast paced story, twists turns, surprises held me totally enthralled. I loved the sizzling chemistry between Brodie & Laurel, their journey was strewn with obstacles. I absolutely adored Brodie who was just down right gorgeous. I had preconceived views about Laurel from earlier books but the more I got to know her the more I came to like & then love her. The secondary characters were also well portrayed some of whom I disliked & others especially Donnan I loved. Whilst this book could be read on its own the series is brilliant & really builds a feel for life in the reign of Robert the Bruce
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
What a fantastic story! This is the ninth book in the Highland Ladies series and although there is some character overlap (court intrigue) I don't belive you would need to have read all eight other books to enjoy this one.
Laurel Ross has been in court for the past eleven years, longer than any of Queen Elizabeth's other ladies. When the King decrees no lady may get married until after Laurel her already strained relationship with the others becomes even worse. In this court the gossip and snide comments are done in the open, there's no hiding the malice.
When newly widowed Brodie Campbell comes to court to seek audience with the king he runs into Laurel's brother Monty and hears of her plight. Being a bit deep in the cups Brodie sees Laurel as an interesting challenge and says as much. Soon there's wagers flying around the tavern betting on Brodie's chances.
There's a lot that went into this story. Their connection at court is just the beginning of this love story. These two have passion and a deeper personal connection that transcends the pages they grace. Their love story is full of action, drama and scandle. There is plotting against them and situations that tear them apart. Start to finish this is a 5 star read.

This is an epic drama that involves the lives of Laurel, Brodie, Monty and Doonan. Laurel was sent to court to live by her parents when she was 11 years old. Rarely invited home, and only visited by her brother Monty and their friend Doonan, Laurel felt more alone and angrier at her parents as the years went by, which made her take her feelings out on other people, earning the title The Shrew of Stirling. When Brodie goes to court to tell the King about an unexpected situation, he stops at a tavern to have a drink or five before retiring for the night. While there, he overhears some men wagering about a woman named Laurel, and how she'll never marry because of her reputation. He drunkenly takes on the challenge to get her to marry him. When he finally meets her, he finds her exciting and fun to be around. Laurel doesn't believe that Brodie is really interested in her, but she likes him. Every minute after they meet is fraught with intrigue, danger and drama. Her brother Monty and his second, Doonan, refuse to leave her alone with all that was going on, even though Monty dislikes Laurel almost as much as everyone else. There are some surprises and some shocks throughout the storyline, but the love between Laurel and Brodie is sweet, romantic and entertaining. Add this one to your TBR list
Another fantastic addition to the Highland Ladies series!
Lady Laurel is a seasoned lady in waiting at the Royal Scottish court, and has a bit of a chip on her shoulder. First she resents being dumped off at the Royal court with very little support from her family except from he occasionally visit from her older brother and second she developed a bit of a reputation in her early years at court as a shrew. And year after year she watches her fellow ladies in waiting fall in love and leave to marry, with nary an offer for her hand. After a decree from the king that Lady Laurel must be next to marry, a wager is made that no one will be able to tame the hellion. The wager both catches the attention Laird Brodie Campbell, and while he wants nothing to do with the wager he’s intrigued and decides to meet the lady in question and boy do the sparks fly between the two! There is a ton of action in this one on the path to the couple’s HEA.
I’m continually impressed with the originality of Celeste’s books and I highly recommend this one and the entire series!

Celeste Barclay's Highland Court stories are fascinating to read. The latest involves Lady Laurel Ross. She has earned the nickname 'Shrew of Sterling', but who wouldn't be a little bitter. Her family all but abandon her at court, and after ten years, she sees fellow ladies find love matches. Her father cuts off her allowance, deeming it a waste of money on a daughter that will never marry. Pretending to be a widow, she sews dresses to sell in the village and watches as they show up on her fellow ladies-in-waiting. Laird Brodie Campbell arrives at court to speak with the King about the attack that killed his wife. He hears about the Shrew of Sterling, meets her, and would not change a thing about her. He wasn't looking for a new wife, but Laurel attracts him like no other. The attacks against Clan Campbell escalate and find themselves at war. Their story is marvelous and this author has another hit.

The story of Laurel Ross “The Hellion” and Brodie Campbell who takes on the challenge of taming her. Laurel Ross the fourth out of five daughters, and the only one unwed, has been sent as a lady-in-waiting to Robert the Bruce’s royal court in order to find a husband. But after ten years as her friends marry her hope has turned to bitterness and she has earned herself the title of “hellion”. Brodie Campbell feels guilty at his relief when his betrothed dies. He finds he doesn’t want a biddable bride and becoming intrigued by the fiery Laurel wonders if she can be tamed. They both find that trust is earned not given when a wager puts their lives in peril. This is another excellent novel from Celeste Barclay set in the court of Robert the Bruce. It is thrilling, fast paced and a real page turner. If you enjoy historical fiction with a steamy flavour this is for you.

So far, I have enjoyed all the stories in this series and this one is just as good as all of the others. The writing is so intense and descriptive that you can feel Laurel’s emotions along with the heartbreak and loneliness that she has had to endure after her family took her to court and left her. Never expecting to marry, Laurel is surprised at her desire to accept Brodie’s proposal but she is skeptical. Of course, Brodie wins her over but after the wedding it appears that danger is lurking and both of their lives are in danger along with his clan. This is a great read that captured my attention from the beginning and lasted until the very end. I would highly recommend this book as you will not be disappointed. A Bear And A Thistle. Exceptional story filled with sizzling passion, mystery, trust, love, betrayals, escapes, and so much more. This is just a whirlwind of emotions, catastrophes, descriptive intimacy, clan wars, that had me at the edge of my seat the entire book. Thrilling epic story that never slowed down and the ending was fantastic. Many surprises along the way in this story. It doesn't do the book justice for me to tell you what it is about so I'll just say it is a story that was filled with happiness, finding love, sadness, jealousy, hateful villain, dangerous escapes and more. The characters were so well described. I fell in love with Brody who was not only a leader of men but had a heart filled with caring love for his hellion. The first intimate scene was so sensuous, tender and caring. Laurel was also a fantastic character to learn about. She was horribly treated but so strong in character she learned how to defeat her enemies in a very intelligent way. To me is seemed like the first part of the book was about discovering the romance that developed into a wonderful connection of deep love for the couple. The second half of the book dealt with the clan, the king and all of the different problems as they managed to build their future. The reason for the name Thistle is beautiful. Heat level 2+out of 5. Mature reader. Plot content: 10 I did receive a much appreciated early copy that did not influence my review.
Lady Laurel has been through a lot and has earned the nickname of "Shrew". She's had to fend for herself for most of her life and has watched any number of other ladies find their mates and ride off into the sunset. Laurel has NOT had an easy time but she's developed a facade that makes others avoid her. Finally the king announces that she must be the next one wed and anyone who didn't actively hate her, now does. A bet is made and Brodie is eager to meet the difficult lady. Sparks fly and they must work together to get their HEA.
I'm totally loving this series. While the setting is the same, all the characters are so different that you don't want to skip a book. I love how the author develops the characters and makes them so lifelike. She's also a wizard at matching every lady to the man she's supposed to be with. Great series, each story is better than the last. No plastic characters or trite plot devices. Well worth your read.
This is Laurel and Brodie’s story Wow! what a ride. This story started off with Laurel, a lady in waiting to Robert the Bruce’s wife Queen Elizabeth. Laurel known in the palace as the Shrew of Stirling, due to the fact that she had a sharp wit (and tongue), which to many made her look bitter.. Brodie, Laird Campbell who was at court on his way back to his clan How did the two meet , for that you’ll have to read the book, but you won’t be disappointed it has everything, murder, mystery and even a gay characters , often alluded to but never spoken about in those times I think this is Celeste’s best yet in this series ( hope there are more)

I adore Celeste's book and this one lived up to the series and more. Laurel Ross is a Lady in the Royal Court. Loneliness, anger and a viper tongue, she is most definitely a hellion. Is there more to her? Enter Laird Brodie Campbell. Arriving at court to talk with the king about the death of his young wife, he hears tale of Laurel and her sprited ways. Upon meeting her he finds himself attracted to her and can see beyond her hellion ways. This begins the adventure. This book is full of action, adventure and undying passion. I say this all the time about Celeste's books but I can't recommend this enough.

Laurel finally has her happy ending! I read every books in this series and if Madeline can find her love match, Laurel would too and she deserves someone like Brodie who dotes on her and quite possessive of her. Their story is fun to read in the beginning because I enjoy reading their banters. And after they develop their feeling, their encounters are steamy. Their chemistry is off-the-charts and they are compatible in every ways. Beside that Barclay did an excellent job to create the plot twist that is so brilliant. I hardly enjoy reading an age gap romance but this book is an exception. It is a steamy age gap historical romance that I would recommend everyone to read.

Celeste Barclay knows how to write romance. Her highland books are absolutely wonderful reads. I've eagerly read each one starting with the Sinclair series. A Hellion at the Highland Court was Laurel and Brodie's love story. Laurel finally gets to show her true colors in the story. Brodie was yet again a sexy, confident, progressive Laird. I absolutely loved reading about them getting to know each other and overcoming opstacles. Although, I understood why the villains ended up being who they were I felt like the evil other woman is becoming too much of a reoccurring theme. Otherwise I loved the book and can't wait for more of the series.
