4 The Bartender with Skills Stars ⭐

I stand for free love. In a time of liberal opinions, it’s devastating to think that parents would discriminate against their own children. Which is how we meet our beautiful boy Texas who gets thrown out of home for being gay.

Without any sense of belonging, his friend Primrose throws him a lifeline. A place to crash and a possible job at her dad’s bar. The alternative is to leave town, penniless and alone.

Devin Loveless has finally learnt to accept his homosexuality. Having spent most of his life with a wife and child, now in his late 30s he can try to embrace who he is. Except in this small town, gay men are hard to find, and homophobia still exists. When a stranger enters his bar, the first thing he notices is his sad eyes and the chemistry that follows.

"Fuck. What is it with this guy? I’ve never felt even a glimmer of attraction for anyone in this town, yet this stranger walks into my bar and has me wanting to use my stock room."

Texas is acting purely on instinct. Never actually been with a man, he doesn’t think twice about walking into the unknown with Devin.

"My entire body throbs with unabated yearning. All I’ve ever wanted was to find someone who’s into dicks as much as I am and show me I’m worth every second of that returned craving."

With his first hot encounter under his belt, Texas knows he has been irrevocably changed. Yet not knowing how to deal, he skips out on Devin after their interlude in the stockroom.

But as coincidences would have it, Devin ends up being Primrose’s dad and they are forced to cross paths again. With both men still technically in the closet, can they finally have what they desperately want? Love...

"Maybe I’m meant to be happy.
To find love and peace in a man.
Maybe I’m not sick or broken, just lost.
Lost until my bartender found me."

For a novella Loveless was full of emotion and so damn sexy. Honestly if m/m romances are your kryptonite I highly recommend as both these men were extremely adorable.

4 "Little prince" stars 🌟
He’s an asteroid, bursting in through my atmosphere just to explode into a million pieces, destroying everything but him and me, making himself known forever.
I don't usually feel so many emotions while reading a novella, but this one made me feel them all: heartbreak, angst, hope, and a lot more.

You don’t get to choose who finds you.
Only how you allow them to keep you.

⬆️This is the quote which made me pick up the book in the first place, and it's my favourite one.

This age-gap M/M romance was kind of insta-lovey, but it fits in quite well with the story. I would encourage everyone to give this a try because this short read has an important message for us all:
Love should never mean having to live in fear.

Hot damn and all the is Holy; This book was phenomenal. Did you ever start to read a book, and after the first couple of sentences the book draws you in, and you just can’t stop reading, then you read a scene you liked so much you re-read it several times? Yes, no, maybe? Well its what happened with me in Loveless. If I could give this book more then five stars ,I would. I was starting to fall into a book slump and felt a little burnt out until I picked this bad boy up. Thank you Isabella and K.

for getting me back up.

I loved the dedication at the beginning of the book and is something I always say, love is love. As much as this book is fictional, it still saddens me that family members and people are still not accepting to this day. I am happy to see that C.L. Matthews covered this issue and turned it into a fantastic story.

Texas is 21 years old and lives with his judgemental, ex-military father after his father catches him in the middle of something private, his father kicks him out and goes to his best friend Primrose, who offers her help. Little did he know he would meet that special, secret someone and have an encounter at her fathers bar that night. Man that scene was on the HOT-O-METER of 10 plus; it could melt anyone panties. Love to have been a fly on that wall.

Hope you love a good pounding, sad boy.” Only a flicker of fear settles over his eyes before he’s simpering. “Do your worst, bartender.”

“Stick that monster in me, and show you’re better than I’ve ever had,” I mock.

After the encounter, Texas doesn’t know how to handle his feelings, so he takes off. The next day he goes to Primrose's house to meet her father and is shocked who is her father is his secret encounter. They both continue to struggle since they are still in the closet. Their attraction and love are instant and head over heels with each other. Devin questions their age gap and his daughter's feelings. Both of them are afraid of people’s reactions in their small Minded town.

Love comes when you least expect it. Instead of searching, it finds you. It slams into you at random moments, first by hitting you in the gut and tugging at the strings inside you that hold all your feelings, and in the end, making sure you realize it’s real. You cannot force love out of someone. It works against that.”

I always love a good M/M romance book. Loveless is one of the best. Action packed for a Novella. I loved the authors writing style. If you pick this book up, Enjoy it.

Never has so much emotion, heart, and meaning been packed into a novella. A novella that actually moved me to tears- yes, tears. I simply adored this sweet story- felt my heart lift with the magic of true connection.

Texas and Devin's story is so incredibly powerful- sweet, intimate, affectionately and carefully told, and emotionally riveting. Both of these characters are so open and vulnerable, so relatable and so endearing. This is a story about two men whose happiness is somehow taboo- and their yearning, their longing for peace and acceptance and love, their quest for freedom I felt soul deep.

No one explores what might be "taboo" with more tenderness and reverence than CL Matthews. She gives such life, such intimacy, such care to these characters and their romantic connection that you can't help but marvel at the beauty of their love, and the perfect harmony they create. And that's the point, after all, to help us see that love is not one size fits all- that love is not, in fact, a choice. In her stories, she peels back the layers of oppressive societal constraints to find love stories so raw and authentic, with characters whose love is epic and poetically natural, even if it exists in what most consider an "unnatural" context. She shows us the beauty, and challenge, of love where it is least expected, and often least accepted.

This is her sweetest, most tender and intimate love story- with characters innocent and kind and thirsty for the affection they find in each other. Loveless is so grippingly endearing, charming to its core while keeping that subversive flair that CL incorporates so well. Here, that subversive quality actually comes straight from Loveless's sincerity, the authenticity of these characters' repression and longing, the lived experience of someone denied the basic right to love who they love. And that makes the fruit all the sweeter - because here loving isn't just an expression, it is a full on liberation. Because these two characters don't just get to experience the beauty of falling in love the first time- the magic of that spark- but they also get to experience living fully as themselves for the first time, as love allows them to just fully BE.

I could not love this story more, nor the beautiful reminder that we somehow keeping forgetting- we need to love more, not less.

4.5 stars!

What a read! This novella is packed with so much passion, emotion, tension, angst and so much more. I truly enjoyed how the author dealt with this topic because there wasn't much of 'sugar coating'. You can really feel their struggle - having to deal with the opinions of other people, struggling to find out what/who they really wanted and eventually, self acceptance.

i think there were a few parts that seriously made me blushed hard 😳 the chemistry between Texas and Devin was indescribable ! there were some beautiful & sensual moments between them, but of course there's also some sizzling actions 🔥🔥 okay but i think both of them make a beautiful couple 😌

“You called me baby twice,” he murmurs softly, his face a little flushed. Whether it’s from the nickname or the cold, it’s a good color on him.

highly recommended!! its a beautiful story. i finished this before bed but it left me thinking about it for a few hours before falling asleep. i don't read much of MM romance but i know for sure this one is exceptional.. 4.5 stars! 😍

This was such a quick, hot and at the same time heartwarming novella!!!
If you love M/M and fast paced love stories, then this is for you.
I loved Texas and Devin. C. L. Matthews did a great job making me fall in love with these two characters in such a short amount of time. If you love age gap romance, then this is for you.
I enjoyed this so much that I wouldn't mind a full length novel about these two.
A huge thank you to the author for letting me read this early. Don't miss it!!

Story was too short (even though there are authors who are capable of writing amazing fulfilled stories on less than 100 pages!) to really felt this story. Some main details were ignored too much, so this was just fun short novella with some steamy scenes.

Did someone say MM and FORBIDDEN romance...in one book? These are two of my all-time favorite obsessions and knowing that my girl Cassie (aka C.L. Matthews) was the author behind this story, I just knew that it was going to be EPIC! Let me just say that she exceeded every single one of my expectations and had me by the heartstrings as I inhaled all the words of this addictive romance.

Texas and Devin's chemistry was breathtakingly explosive and in all honestly my heart is still swooning in overdrive when I think about them. Their story was full of emotion, heart and soul...and to think that it was all packed into this short and sweet novella. Loveless captivated me wholeheartedly and my only complaint, which I would actually consider a compliment, is that I wanted MORE of these two because I was in LOVE with every second I got to spend with them.

If you are looking for a quick and fun read that will give you ALL THE FEELS, then you need to pick up your copy of Loveless!

Best CL Matthews book I have ever read. The love, tension, angst, sex, secrets and just EVERYTHING between Dev and Tex was so phenomenal. I read this story months ago but I am going to read it again and update my review because I want to have these feelings all over again. I just love this age gap forbidden taboo romance book TOO much.

“Maybe I’m not sick or broken, just lost.”

Steamy. Intense. Fulfilling.

Cassie always captivated me with her words. She bleeds her emotions into her writing. Even one that is a short story, you can feel what she was feeling as you read.

Devin and Texas are E X P L O S I V E. Their chemistry is in stand and undeniable, extremely hot and a bit forbidden.

I needed this story more than I knew. It captivated me from the first page until the last.

Definitely check out Tex and Dev’s story! It’s one that you must read!!

Bless my little MM romance loving heart. This was sweet and hot and gorgeous and delicious and just perfect for a novella. That’s where it loses half a star, cos I really wanted more of Devon and Texas, King and his Little Prince.

Let me start off by saying M/M is not usually my go to. It just never kept my attention. Now, with that said. This book was so amazing! So much feeling, depth in the characters, and the steam! Oh mylanta was it steamy! Devin is my new love. I am obsessed with him. The taboo mistress did it again. Brought life to two incredible characters and stole my heart while doing it.

If I were to describe this novella in two emojis, they would be: 🙄 & 🤢

I should have known better than to read a book who's blurb doesn't tell you anything about the actual stories.

What angst there is gets resolved instantly. And speaking of instantly, this is insta-love. I mean, if you exclude the the epilogue, this story takes place in less than a 48 hour window.

Texas didn't realize Prim (or at least her parents) had money, yet she is a 19 year old driving a Tesla, which are minimum 35k. Devin didn't realize the Texas his daughter always talked about was a person, not the state... and was even more shocked to realize Texas was male. Talk about clueless.

Prim talks like a 6 year old.

The "little prince" pet name was odd enough, but Devin referring to himself as the king and Primrose as their princess made it even cringier.

And in terms of money, Texas needed financial aid for school, said him and his dad scraped by, but he hasn't worked since high school, owns his own car and has a bunch of tattoos and piercings.

Prim manages to go out, buy her gross whipped cream tea and groceries and get back home in the same amount of time it takes Devin and Texas to have a short convo and a blowjob. It was either a really long bj, or a really short trip to a coffee shop and grocery store.

I didn't enjoy the sex scenes... the dirty talk was corny/cringey. Texas obviously needs to watch more porn, because he has only seen one video where the guys fucked face to face, since "men tend to fuck from behind".

And for two men both terrified of how Primrose will react if she finds out either of them are gay, they sure didn't have much qualms about fucking when she was just down the hall.

And Primrpse seemed more shocked Bojt seeing her friend and crush getting tucked then by seeing her dad naked, fucking. Sorry, but if that was me, I'd probably want to gouge out my eyes and if my father laughed about it, I'd probably punch him in the face.

Some sentences were odd, and had me reading them a second time to understand what was acutally being said.

Prim and Texas go from being friends for 3 years, to 1 year.

The whole thing was too wordy, which was maybe supposed to make it seem poetic, but it made the narrative & dialogue sound archaic and unnatural.

The two POVs sound identical, and I would think a 21 year old shouldn't sound identical to a 36 year old father.

The way CL Matthews portrays her characters emotions has my heart on a roller coaster. One minute it’s jumping for joy, the next it’s down in my stomach making me feel queasy. I wasn’t expecting to get so emotional reading this story 😭😭😭

“𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗻𝘆𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲.”

At the heart of this story was the idea that hiding your true nature, for the sake of others, is a necessary evil. Yet whenever the truth was spoken life changing revelations were revealed. Devin hides from his daughter. Texas hides from his best friend. Each is miserable. Each is incomplete.

Then one fateful night, at a bar, Dev and Tex are drawn together like magnets. Their attraction hits so fast and hard it was beautiful. I wasn’t expecting both of them to be dominant and possessive but it works. And some of the affirmations that roll off Dev’s tongue 🥵🥵🥵 They’re enough to make a girl squirm or find hearts her eyes.

“𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗶𝘁. 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲, 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲. 𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗜 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗸𝗻𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴.”

The love story of Devin and Texas was exactly what I have been looking for and I couldn’t put it down. It hit the perfect balance between emotion and panty melting story telling. CL Matthews has a way with telling MM romance that makes me so hot I can barely stand it, and this story was no exception. I loved all of the main characters in the story and the unique dynamic created by the prior relationships Devin and Texas each had with Primrose. I was fully along for the ride and enjoyed watching how quickly their bond was created when “love slammed into them”. The sweetness of their relationship and the way they were each able to fill a hole the other had in their life made this the perfect swoony little romance for me.

Ok so I was not expecting the brilliance that I just read. The amount of emotion packed in this short story has left me speechless. To tell the true I did not just read this. I finished almost a week ago and have been trying to find the right words since. I am truely In a glass case of emotion. Texas and Devin had out of this world chemistry but also depicted what the meeting of two sole mates looks like perfectly. I wish I could say more but the only way for you to understand is to read it. So if you still haven't one-clicked I'm not sure what you're waiting for. Just do it!

I don't read a lot of M/M romances, but I do read everything that Cassie publishes and this book is no different. This is incredibly emotional, poignant, important, and the sweetest love story this author has ever written.

This wouldn't be a CL novel without an element of taboo, but I didn't see the forbidden aspect to this: all I saw were two people struggling to come to terms with what they wanted, with who they wanted, and how the rest of the world would perceive it. It also resonates with how so many of our LGBTQ brothers and sisters struggle with accepting their sexuality when they've always been told that it was wrong. I just can't recommend this book enough!

Even if MM isn't your forte, please go read this incredibly emotional (and HOT!!🔥🔥) novella. This is Cassie at her absolute best and it deserves to be read!

**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions!**

“You’re fucking perfection, little prince.”

While this is a novella, I was surprised with the amount of emotions and heartbreak that it packed.

Texas & Devin's is short and happened quick, but nonetheless is amazingly enthralling. It’s honest, truthful. Happenstance.
When Texas thinks he has reach rock bottom, he throws caution to the wind and has his first time in a bar.
“Hope you love a good pounding, sad boy.”
“Do your worst, bartender.”

Maybe he’s in the closet too.

Both Devin and Texas will have to face their truths, if they want their HEA.

Lifeless. Loveless. Pissed.

While their story is heartwarming, it's equally passionate. The sex scenes are smoking hot and so full of overwhelming feelings.

This is a quick read, but pack a fantastic punch it could have easily been a complete novel. I can completely recommend it, you'll love it.

For the life of me I couldn't get past the first 20%. The cringe, it's fucking real.

Here's the thing, the book had all the right intentions but I couldn't with the execution. The writing was exaggerative, it was insta-love with too much drama and not enough processing. Texas got kicked out and we only got two minutes of angst and then he was 'oh well what's next'. Devion looked at Texas and suddenly realized he is The One then started calling him 'sad boy' and 'prince' (sad boy??? seriously???). Prim's nasal voice makes me feel like I'm listening to nails on chalkboards on repeat with all her 'Daddy!' and spoiled princess vegatarian grunge worrior vibes that would've been awesome but was absolutelynot.

On a different note, I will have to acknowledge that this book just wasn't my type. I know some people will dig all that, I just like my books slower paced with more developed characters before jumping in the plot.

Loveless is insta love at it’s greatest! I love a good insta love story and this one hit every nail on the head for me. This is my first book by this author and I thought it was written perfectly for the subject. It had the lust, the heat, the sexiness. It also had the heartfelt moments and the sad ones. I couldn’t put it down and read it in about an hour!

I can’t wait to dive into more from this author. I hear her other books are just as amazing. If you are in to insta love MM romances, than I definitely recommend this book to you!

“That’s it. Scream for me, little prince. Let it all out while I make you fall to your knees for your king.”

This book was a fun and VERY quick read. Not really much of a plot, it was insta love and everything was both rushed and at a good pace? Does that make sense? Like all the topics were hit without going too deep into it to become a full length novel. Like I said it was fun.

There was enough in this to keep me reading, but it wasn’t very believable to me. Too much immediate forgiveness, staying friends after divorce, success at every turn. It was just too ambitious.

I have read this book a couple months ago it was my first ever M/M and I can’t believe I waited so long to read one because DAMN! As we all know CL Matthews is the queen of taboo/MM but Texas and Devin will always hold a special place in my heart.

Maybe it’s because they were my first or just because how freaking good the story was but saf demands more. I will never have enough of my babes 😭

This. Was. LIT.

The chemistry between Texas and Devin bled off the page and the steamy scenes were top tier. The angst was everything I wanted it to be and every interaction between them was so intense with emotion I could taste it. This was so beautifully written I wanted it to keep going. The taboo nature of the relationship just added to the tension and I loved every page of this. I received an advance copy of this from the author and I volunteered to leave an unbiased review.

Possibly the hottest book I’ve ever read!!!

The reward far outweighs the risk in this story. The love is all consuming and the beautiful family dynamic left my heart full to overflowing. Although the story is perfectly complete I crave more!

Thank you C L Matthews your words are everything ❤️
