A shaky truce. A pregnant Medusa. And a dedicated doctor who keeps legends alive.
Even during a truce, I have my hands full as a MASH surgeon to an army of warring gods—especially when Medusa herself turns up pregnant. I frankly have no idea what to expect when a Gorgon’s expecting, but I have an even bigger problem when my presumed-dead former-fiancé sneaks into my tent with enough emotional baggage to fill a tank.
He’s been fighting for the other side, which technically makes him my enemy, and now he needs me and the power I’ve kept secret for so long: I can see the dead. It’s a blessing and a curse. Literally. Because the gods will smite me in a second if they suspect.
But the other side is developing a terrible new weapon, and the only person who can stop the carnage was just murdered in a covert lab behind enemy lines. So I have no choice but to pull on my combat boots and go AWOL with my ex and a moody berserker to confront a ghost with a terrible secret.
Too bad uncovering the truth could make me enemy #1…
Warning: This book contains a Star Wars-obsessed werewolf, an adorable hellhound, demigods in peril, action, romance, and friends who put each other first—in a MASH camp where everybody knows your business.
*The core of this book was originally called Immortally Embraced, published by St. Martin's Press in 2013. The author has rewritten it into the way she always envisioned the story to be, which means it is now a romantic comedy instead of an angsty book. Oh, and there are a lot more pet swamp lizards, too.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Angie Fox writes sweet, fun, action-packed mysteries. Her characters are clever and fearless, but in real life, Angie is afraid of basements, bees, and going up stairs when it is dark behind her. Let’s face it. Angie wouldn’t last five minutes in one of her books.
Angie is best known for her SOUTHERN SPIRITS™ mysteries, and for her ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER books.
I had a great time with this book! This is the second book in the Monster MASH series which I would recommend reading in order if at all possible but it could also work as a stand-alone if necessary. This is a lighter read that doesn't take itself too seriously and has a fair amount of humor woven throughout the story. I am so glad that I decided to give this series a try.
Petra is a doctor working in a MASH unit during the war between the Old Gods and the New Gods. Even though there is a truce it seems her work is never done and she is dealing with a pregnant Medusa among other things. She does not expect to find her dead fiance to be quite alive and reaching out to her for help. Petra can see ghosts so she is the perfect one to help figure out what is going on at his camp, which happens to be on the opposite side of the eternal war.
I have to admit that I was a little, okay a lot, sad by the fact that Petra says goodbye to Galen at the start of this book. We spent the whole previous book getting them into a relationship and I wanted to see more. I was a little disappointed that Petra moved on as quickly as she did but I decided to just go with it and see what would happen. I am not giving up hope on seeing Galen again though!
I thought that the story was pretty exciting. It is always fun to see what some of these characters will do. Petra is often faced with impossible situations and I love how she always seems to make things work out in the end. I like that this was a lighter read with wonderful characters and a fun tone throughout. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series!
I received a digital review copy of this book from Moose Island Books via NetGalley.
Updated review for the renamed Transylvania Twist release 1/26/21. Parts rewritten. More humor and community. Better understanding of the return off Mark and the ease of reconnecting vs the loss of someone she thought she could count on. The prophecy. It’s all about the prophecy.
Original review 2013 - Second book of the Monster MASH series by Angie Fox. Love the humor. It's a unique story line and I am waiting to see what happens in this war of the gods. Mild spoilers follow*********after really enjoying Immortally Yours, I found Immortally Embraced a little puzzling. HEA in book one and now a new guy in book two? I found it difficult to warm up to this new relationship mostly because I didn't want to let go of the first one (Galen). And I kept expecting Galen to show up at some inappropriate time, but he never did. By the end, I did care about this new relationship, but wow Angie - way to get me on both sides of the fence!
This did not go how I thought it would. After the first book, Petra is with Galen and there's a brief stay in fighting. At the very beginning of this story, Galen leaves Petra to do top secret things and breaks up with her. I couldn't believe it and kept waiting for him to come back, but nope. Instead Petra gets a blast from the past in the form of her ex boyfriend she thought was dead.
The flow of this is similar to the previous book. Petra and Marc go through the chaos of war and are racing against time and prophecies to stop something terrible from happening. There's some romance but not too much, the plot focuses more on stopping a terrible weapon from killing thousands of people. The ending was a bit anticlimactic again, with no fight scene and things easily resolved.
I don't know where the series is going after reading this. Will Petra find Galen again or stay with Marc? Will there ever be an epic showdown? I'd really like to see more ghosts, I feel like there's a huge lack of them despite it being Petra's biggest gift.
3.5 Stars ARC provided by NetGalley for an Honest Review I’m so conflicted about this series. After picking up right where book one ended, I got sucked in a lot more this time around. Right off the bat the drama escalates and it was like a limbo version of dating hell for Petra. After not dating for ten years after her lover dies she finally finds new love in a demigod whose life she saved in book one. Only soon after, Galen breaks up with her when he’s called back to the frontlines. Not even days later her long lost love returns from the dead and needs her help. Say what!?!? The ghost of his former mentor is lingering and is clearly enraged about something and Marc needs Petra to speak to him. After ten years of letting her believe him dead Marc needs her help. Obviously this left Petra all over the place emotionally. I do think she was in the moment quite a bit and quickly forgot about Galen or so it seemed to me. After breaking into the enemy base Petra learns so much about their tactics and plans. This is where I thought the plot would lie within. Learning more about this mystery mineral and how the enemy plans to use it against them. This airborne virus that they want to use to eradicate humans and level the playing field. Finding out the meaning to the single prophecy. An editing error really threw me for a loop and I’m so happy I read this with a buddy who told me to go on. My copy looks to end at 86% followed by a “join us for the final installment.” Blah blah but the next page was the next chapter, if not for my buddy I never would have known and I wouldn’t be editing the rant side of this review lol. A few issues are tackled and a few are left hanging for the last book. Petra and Marcs experiment is nearly turned into a human killing virus but was luckily thwarted by a meddling goddess. I will say I still think a lot goes over petras head. Its like she’s super smart but lacks common sense and misses the easiest things right in front of her. I certainly enjoyed this book a lot more than book one and found it pretty exciting. I loved seeing Medusa as a scared expectant mother. And I especially loved seeing the priests hell hound show his true form in defense of Petra. I’m hoping all that’s been left open concludes in the last book, particularly Petra’s relationship status. I mean will she even get a HEA with either of her men? Not sure I have a favorite at this point but how and who will she choose, remains to be seen. Things with her and Marc seem to be turning serious but what will that mean if Galen returns?

Since the truce between the old and new gods has put a temporary stop to the huge number of casualties that Petra's MASH unit have been trained to deal with things have been a little quieter for Petra and her colleagues. The lull in emergencies has left more time for them to get back to being normal doctors though and Petra is enjoying having the chance to work with regular patients again. Life is pretty good until her lover Galen is called back to work to lead his team on a super secret mission. The fact that she might never see him again would be bad enough but it's made even worse when he dumps her before he leaves. Petra doesn't have much time to wallow in her heartbreak before a blast from the past makes a shocking reappearance. He was drafted to the other side and now he needs her help but can Petra sneak into enemy territory and make it back in one piece? Even if she agrees to help can she really trust a man who has already broken her heart once before? Things are about to get complicated.
I really enjoyed Immortally Yours so I couldn't wait to get my hands on Immortally Embraced. I have to admit that this book was nothing like I expected but thankfully that doesn't mean I enjoyed it any less. I was completely shocked when Galen walked away from Petra and I was even more shocked at the arrival of someone from her past! I can't say who it is because I would hate to spoil the surprise but trust me it was the last person I expected. I'm not normally a fan of love triangles so I was a bit sceptical when the new guy first appeared on the scene but I have to say that it was handled really well and I actually found myself falling for the new guy right alongside Petra. To be fair I have a bit of a thing for dragon shifters so that was a big bonus in his favour!
I so badly want to talk more about the new guy and why I loved him so much but I'm wary of the fact that anything I say could end up turning into an unintentional spoiler. I'm just going to leave it by saying I loved how much he cared for Petra and although I could understand why she was so angry with the things he did in the past I was also able to see why he did it and forgive him for it. Petra is still a great heroine, she isn't the strongest person - especially compared to the supernatural creatures she is surrounded by - but she is brave and intelligent. I respect the fact that she always stands up for what she believes in, even when it gets her into trouble, and I admire her for her determination to try and stop the war.
Immortally Embraced was just as much fun to read as the first book in the series, the humour is fantastic and had me giggling to myself several times as I was reading. I also enjoyed the relationship development between Petra and the new guy and am now extremely curious to see what is going to happen in the final book, Immortally Ever After, which will be released in August. I honestly don't know if I want to see her end up with Galen or new guy which is very unusual for me - I tend to be quick to pick a side when it comes to love triangles! If you enjoyed the first book in the series then you're going to love this one just as much (even if you're not a fan of love triangles so don't let that put you off because this is far from your average one!). If you're new to the series then I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for a fun and light hearted paranormal romance that is full of humour, great characters and a nice amount of smut. I would suggest starting with the first book, Immortally Yours, though so you can get the most out of the ongoing storyline with the war between the old and new gods.
I really got caught up in the first book but absolutely loved this one ! I cannot praise this unique take on Mash medicine highly enough. I adore Petra our medic as she just cares so much. In this book we get to see much more meddlesome Gods or maybe I mean Goddesses. Plus I absolutely forgive the author for changing the romance because it was a surprise that really worked. Add in absolutely crazy additional characters from Medussa to Hellhounds and this the second book is absolutely fabulous. I hear it's a slight rewriting of an older trilogy that I haven't read so honestly cannot say how it compares but I can say I'm loving it. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
For anyone who loves rom-cons with a paranormal twist, this series and book is just what the doctor ordered! It is light yet suspenseful, humorous, yet romantic and all kinds of fun to read. Although it can be read as a stand-alone, much may be lost as this story is based on and develops from the first book in this series. That being said, a first time reader may actually enjoy the story-line more, as the weird switch in romantic interests won’t be noticed. And that is the biggest downfall in this story for this reader. One becomes so attached to the fabulous character of Galen in the first book, that to abruptly take him out of the picture at the beginning of this story and immediately introduce a new love is just too jarring to believe, or enjoy. Uh... nope. Just didn’t work.
Still, if one is taking this story individually, all the qualities, entertainment, suspense and light-hearted banter and high-jinx are dished out on a very scrumptious platter of enjoyment.
The Transylvania Twist by Angie Fox is the second in this series but could be read on it's own.
Petra once again must fulfill the oracles prophecies. Galen has left her to return to the front lines but her "dead" fiance has returned to recruit her to help stop a super weapon developed by scientists for the Old God Army. Petra is strong and often snarky but I love the way she treats her patients with genuine care and concern. Being reunited with her supposedly dead fiance brings up a lot of emotional conflict for her in the midst of trying to understand the prophecies. Ms. Fox's descriptive writing of the mortal and immortal characters as well as the setting made it all come alive while I read.
I voluntarily read an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All of the above opinions are my own.
I love this trilogy! Petra's new patient is Medusa and she is pregnant. As the MASH unit enjoys a temporary truce Petra first love turns up not only alive but doing well. Petra doesn't have time to deal with all the emotions as they fight to prevent the old gods from using a new and terrible weapon. The world Angie has created evokes all my memories of the TV show MASH. Characters that are warm and ethical. Relationships that are challenging and supportive. Practical jokes, families far away and an enemy close by. The differences are that many of these characters are paranormal with delightful quirks and deadly skills and that the warring groups are the old gods and the new gods. Once again, I can hardly wait for the next (final) book in this trilogy.
Well again we had some good moments. I loved the ghost doctor and then how the dagger kept appearing. I liked Medusa and I can't wait to meet the baby. I feel the Gods have been made out to seem more like office workers just popping up here and there giving orders then disappearing again. I feel the relationship from the first book was pointless. I like Mark and I'm glad they found each other again.
Between a not so dead fiancé, new prophecies, an adorable hellhound and lots of memorabilia, Petra has her hands full. The Transylvania Twist makes a great entry into author Angie Fox’s Monster M*A*S*H series.
Truce has been called and now Petra and the MASH crew are still busy. Only now they are taking care of patients in a less brink of death management kind of way. Except for Medusa, who is pregnant, emotional and cranky. How could things get any worse? How about a fiancé who was presumed-dead, and is working for the other side. 0.o But wait, there’s more. The other side is developing a terrible new weapon, and the only person who can stop the carnage was just murdered in a covert lab behind enemy lines. Now Petra must cross into enemy territory to talk to the dead to find out about the new weapon and how to stop it. Oh my!
Have to say I found the first book in the series to be funnier than this one. Not to say it isn’t funny. I mean come on, Medusa is preggo and we also have an appearance by a presumed-dead former-fiancé. You know that was a recipe for humor right there. It just has more depth because you know what that no longer dead fiancé means. One of the men in Petra’s life has got to go and according to the blurb, all fingers point to... NOOOO! Not Galen! *Sniffing and wipes tears* Okay, guess we should give the new guy a chance. I have to say Mark’s story is interesting. The why of his disappearance and his return makes for a good twist in this series – even if I am Team Galen.
Loads of fun to be had here. I really enjoyed this book more than the first. The characters are more lovable as we get to know them and the chaos that Petra finds herself is crazier. I don’t think we have seen the last of Medusa here and the mind boggles on what kind of baby will she have. I’m still holding out for hope that Galen will comes back, but then, how will Petra choose?! Yikes! I can’t wait to find out.
Stars: 4
I received this book from Netgalley. I was not compensated for the book other than the entertainment it provided. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Series: The Monster MASH #2 Rating: 3 stars - I liked it
FYI this book was originally published under the title, Immortally Embraced.
Even during a truce, Petra has her hands full as a MASH surgeon. She has to deal with a pregnant Medusa, her presumed-dead fiance showing back up, a new prophecy and a potentially deadly weapon being created by the Old Gods.
This was another nonstop action packed adventure for Petra. Just like in the first book, I really enjoyed Petra and her snarky comments. The MASH unit she is in is so much fun and filled with very unique characters, especially her roommates. She is a great heroine who ends up doing a lot of things she doesn’t want to do to try and stop the war between the Old and New Gods. I like that she isn’t a perfect heroine and is frequently grumpy that she has to help save the world again.
While I did enjoy this story, I was disappointed by Galen not being a part of it. I thought they were a great couple in the first book and was extremely disappointed that their relationship doesn’t continue. I liked Marc but the baggage between them made the relationship very stilted and somewhat repetitive. It’s hard for me to envision these two working out because they have changed so much.
Overall, this was an interesting world filled with unique characters. I am looking forward to the next book, especially since the Gods seem determined to start the war all over again.
Won’t finish the series. The author completely destroyed the series by taking the love story between Galen and Petra and demolishing it to pave the way for another old hookup story and having her bed hopping. Honestly I’m looking for a different story from real life and that regardless of being a paranormal is far to close to reality for my enjoyment. Shame on you for ruining the entire story by the bed hopping bs. Get us hooked with the Love Everlasting with the first book and expecting everyone to be all oh darn but hot sex scene from the second. Could have separated the couple without destroying the love story of the first by the force fed instant chemistry of the second. In real life if you don’t have real love you want to find it in your books that’s the main draw of Paranormal Romance. Shit even the Reverse Harem story lines have devoted love to the heroine of the story for the hero’s. Definitely not interested in anything else by this author. Just couldn’t get into the story after the instant bed hopping of book 2.

This is one of those books that I really liked, but I’m still not sure about the direction that it took. *sigh* I don’t like giving things away, but since it was mentioned in the description… I was not happy about Mark’s return…. for a lot of reasons.
The rest of the story was just as good as Monster M*A*S*H, the first book in the series. I just really liked Galen and Petra’s relationship in the first book. He brought out the best in her or at least made her feel that things that she doubted were totally possible. I didn’t get that same feeling from Mark. It felt like he was using her most of the time and I just really didn’t like him. Petty, I know… *sigh*
As for the rest of the story, it was just as full of action, mystery, loyal friends and humor as readers have come to expect – not just from this series, but from Angie Fox books in general. Werewolves in London is next and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of Transylvania Twist. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really loved this book. It's an Urban fantasy with a twist. A little bit romance, mystery and a lot of witty storytelling. The world and the characters are memorable. It's a fun story about a doctor at a M.A.S.H. unit located in Limbo. The Gods are at war but a tentative peace has broken out. There's a chaplin with a pet hell hound, a sci-fi obsessed werewolf, jealous Goddesses, a pregnant Gorgon and they aren't even the main characters. Petra is a brave dedicated doctor, her love life is a crazy mess and she has a prophecy breathing down her neck. Her heart is newly broken and she hasn't even had time to grieve when her 10 years dead boyfriend shows up to complicate things even more. I am excited to have discovered a new author with so many books to read. I would like to thank Angie Fox, NetGalley and Moose island books for this ARC. All options are my own. #TheTransylvaniaTwist #NetGalley

*Thoughts*
The Transylvania Twist is the second installment in author Angie Fox's Monster M*A*S*H series. The Monster MASH series takes place in and around a paranormal MASH unit during a seemingly endless war between the young Gods and older Gods who have been fighting since the fall of Troy. Petra Robichaud and her colleagues at the MASH 3063rd have been drafted until the end of the conflict, or until they die, which is bad for Petra but even worse for people like her vampire roommate, Marius.
Absolutely overjoyed to be back with these characters, I loved the first book in this series so much, that I was so happy to be approved for this too. I actually enjoyed this book even more than the first, I love how geeky these books are . I love Petra, even if the romance in this book had me worried, where is this going, who does she want, no spoilers read for yourself and I need book 3 now to find out more. Absolutely fantastic writing, addictive and fast paced, full of fun, perfect escapism
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL!!! Title: The Transylvania Twist Series: The Monster MASH Trilogy Author: Angie Fox Designation: Book 2 of 3, Full-Length, Not Recommended As A Stand-alone, Happy For Now #urbanfantasy #supernaturalsuspense #mythology #romanticcomedy My Rating: Five Delightful Stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
I loved, loved, loved The Transylvania Twist by Angie Fox! I’ve been a fan of Fox's work for years and was beyond thrilled when she announced plans to republish The Monster MASH series with some major revisions. This book, which is the second in the trilogy, was originally published as Immortally Embraced in 2013. I actually own all three of the original ebooks and read them years ago. I enjoyed them immensely but always felt like something important was missing from the series, though I could never pinpoint what. Don’t get me wrong; the entire original series was very good. Obviously, other people agreed. The original release of the first book was a RITA Award finalist for 2013 in the paranormal romance category. Without a doubt, Fox is an exceptional storyteller and talented wordsmith. I’ve always found her work to be unique, clever, and entertaining, but her Monster MASH series is one of the most imaginative concepts I’ve ever read. Fox’s reboot of this trilogy with quite a few major revisions took a gemstone-in-the-rough manuscript and elevated it to a brilliant, shiny diamond. Two of the major changes were the elimination of the explicit love scenes and a downplay of the angsty romantic vibes, changing the entire focus of the story and giving it a more upbeat, comedic feel. It still has romantic elements but the reader is no longer distracted by the sex scenes, allowing us the concentrate on the core of the story, which is the plot, conflict, and the entire cast of characters, their lives, interactions, and relationship to each other. There are still romantic elements, but the love triangle aspect is no longer the main driving force of the story, though the relationship between the heroine, Dr Petra Robichaud, and her two heroes. The first is former-demigod Galen of Delphoi, Commander with the New God Army, whom we met in book one. The second is Dr Marcus Balinger, a dragon shifter and former Captain with the Old God Army, who makes a shocking appearance in book two. And just what makes it so shocking? He's not only Petra's ex-boyfriend but also because he's been dead for the last eight years! Say what?!? And all three protagonists are still extremely important components of the entire series. Fox also expanded the sense of community by adding information and dialogue to elevate the importance of the secondary and tertiary characters. And I LOVED it! One of the things I enjoy most about Fox’s work is her ability to create a magnificent cast of fantastical yet relatable and endearing characters, giving her worlds a small town/community atmosphere, even in a fictional, warzone MASH unit. For anyone unfamiliar with the term, it means Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. And if you just thought like the 70s television series with Hawkeye Pierce, Hot Lips Houlihan, and Corporal Klinger, you would be correct. Fox definitely received inspiration from the show and its cast. Our very reluctant heroine, Dr Petra Robichaud, was the perfect embodiment of the always irreverent Hawkeye Pierce. I fell in love with our intrepid heroine Petra Robichaud! She was smart, strong, stubborn, sassy, snarky, and not easily convinced of her destiny. Actually, she was dragged into the role of heroine, literally kicking and screaming the entire way.
And our intense hero, handsome demigod and elite special forces soldier Captain Galen of Delphi, was just the opposite. He was all too eager to fall on his sword and sacrifice his life for the cause of the New God Army - or at least he was until he met Dr Petra Robichaud. The attraction between these two was immediate but it takes a lot more than a near-death experience to win Petra’s trust, and a heck of a lot more to win her love. But with faith in each other, these two may be able to save the world!
Half fae, half-human Petra Robichaud was happy with life at her clinic in New Orleans. She was one of only a few paranormal doctors in the area and the only paranormal thoracic surgeon. Unfortunately, she caught the wrong kind of attention and was drafted into the New God Army. Even worse, her involuntary conscription would probably last for the rest of her life. The old gods and the new gods had already been fighting for hundreds of years, with no cease-fire in sight. Petra’s seven years of service at MASH 3063rd located on the plains of Limbo already seemed like a lifetime. It was the same routine, day in and day out, the daily surgeries and treatment on wounded and dying soldiers, all casualties of a senseless, never-ending war. Until one dying warrior changed everything. When the handsome Captain Galen of Delphi died on Petra’s table, she made an extremely rash and impulsive decision. She saved his life by yanking his soul back into his body. Yup, you read that correctly. Dr Robichaud was half-fae and possessed a secret but very powerful gift. She could see and communicate with the dead and her special ability was a big no-no with the gods. If they found out, she would be as good as dead. Galen had been in critical condition and she’d hoped he wouldn’t remember. But he did remember and now he’s convinced that Petra is part of an ancient prophecy to end the war. Too bad Petra doesn’t have any faith in Galen or the prophecy and with good reason. Well, I guess it’s fortunate then that Galen refuses to give up on the lovely doctor who has stolen his heart. Petra has already lost enough and she’ll fight fate to the bitter end! Let the battle begin!
Did I like this book? No, I LOVED it! This book had everything I enjoy in a story. It’s filled to the brim with action, adventure, suspense, mystery, angst, romance, humor, romance, wonderful characters, shenanigans, and hijinks galore. And a whole lot of baby swamp creatures! Lol... You’ll just have to read the book! Would I recommend it! You bet and I am, but maybe only for ages 16 and above. There are a few curse words. Will I read this author again? Absolutely! Just as soon as she releases the next book in this trilogy, which is only a few weeks away! And finally, was I entertained? Completely! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

What Reviewers are saying… 5 Stars! “This second MASH book is even better than the first!” 5 Stars! “It has all the right touches—love, laughter, suspense, action and surprise twists!” 5 Stars! “Finished this one in one night!” 5 Stars! “The cast of characters is amazing, the world Petra lives in is fascinating. You cannot read this book fast enough to learn what happens next.” 5 Stars! “Love Love Love! What else can I say?”
*The core of this book was originally called Immortally Embraced, published by St. Martin's Press in 2013. The author has rewritten it into the way she always envisioned the story to be, which means it is now a romantic comedy instead of an angsty book. Oh, and there are a lot more pet swamp lizards, too.
Review:
The characters are as varied and unique as the storyline is. Petra must once again go against the rules and go somewhere she is not supposed to go and help someone who she has not seen for a long time. Petra is a strong woman who does not shy away from life. But this time she may have bitten off more than she can chew. And her secret (the fact that she can see the dead) may not be safe.
There is a lot of action taking place in this story and some very tense moments. I thought the author did a great job creating tension and mayhem and I was worried about what was going to happen. I love when that happens.
The non-stop action and quirky characters make this book a pleasure to read. Pick up a copy and enjoy.
I know jumping into a series without reading the previous books is a bit of a no-no in the minds of a lot of bloggers and authors alike but I enjoy the challenge of diving in midstory. I think it says more about an author’s ability to carry the story and get the reader involved if you are still able to follow the plot without having the backstory. Angie Fox was able to do just that in book #2 of Monster M*A*S*H. While the reading of the first book would obviously have given me more detail, it’s always fun going in blind and I didn’t feel that I missed much by not reading #1.
While I thought the premise of including mythology would be interesting, the world-building was much more than I imagined it would be and I don’t just mean because it happens to have two suns and hell vents. This is a vibrant world in between the warring lines of the Old Gods and the New with a number of fun, quirky characters. Petra isn’t the most unique persona of the bunch by any means. Her tent mates are a vampire and a vegetarian werewolf. Her ex is a shapeshifting dragon. Of course, you already know there’s Medusa who, yes, can still turn people to stone with a look. There’s more. A lot more.
The romance here was a bit interesting. Her ex has been gone for 10 years and she’s finally gotten close to someone else, only to have that someone else walk away after he’s called back into the action. He’s decided that she should be free to be happy, whatever that looks like. She’s heartbroken naturally, but even more, shaken when the ex, Marc shows back up especially since he let everyone think he’s been dead for a decade. Not only that but he needs a specific set of skills that she has, and he has to take her beyond enemy lines to use them. I wasn’t so sure that I liked him but he definitely grew on me as the book went on.
Romance isn’t all that Translyvania Twist has to offer. It truly has a bit of everything. A bit of mystery, humor, and some good snark kept me turning pages. It’s clever, witty, and entertaining while still managing a good bit of darkness and occasional broodiness.
I have to say – I’m quite glad that I read these books out of order, because I’m not sure I would have continued with the series if I hadn’t. It isn’t that this one is badly written, or lacking in tension – in fact, this particular storyline is probably the strongest of all the books. But the hard fact of the never-ending war, even with a truce, is grittily portrayed in this one. And while there are splashes of humour – I love the plotline where Medusa is pregnant and Petra is in charge of her ante-natal care – this time around, I was far more aware of the darker underbelly of this story.
There is also a love triangle. Generally, I’m not a huge fan of this dynamic, as it mostly manages to make the protagonist look like a shallow-minded flirt for not being able to make up her mind between the two men cluttering up her life. However in this case, Petra gets a pass. Her relationship with a super-soldier, now suddenly no longer immortal, comes to an abrupt end as he is called back to the front with little or no prospect of their meeting up again. And then her former fiancé, who she believed was dead – makes a sudden appearance… As I once knew someone whose parents had gone through this harrowing scenario at the end of WWII, I’m quite happy for this plotline to unfurl. But while there are funny moments – it is also quite an emotional read, which isn’t a bad thing but I was looking for something a bit fluffier.
That said, I really like Petra and her bouncy look on life, while the world is vividly described. The action scenes work well with plenty of tension and drama and I blew through this one in a couple of sittings, still held by the story, even though I already knew the ultimate outcome – which is a strong testament to Fox’s writing. Highly recommended for fantasy fans who like something quirky, with plenty of light-hearted moments. While I obtained an arc of The Transylvania Twist from the publishers via Netgalley, the opinions I have expressed are unbiased and my own. 8/10
I'm not going to lie, I have no idea how I feel AT ALL about Marc's reappearance. While Petra's life has admittedly been thrown into turmoil (not just by the prophecies, either. Thanks, Galen.), the fact he let her (and his family) believe he's been dead for the last 10 years is a hard one for me to work my head around. Plus, I liked Galen. You know, right up until he started making decisions for her.
Nobody's perfect, I guess.
Anywho. There's more prophetic mayhem making the rounds and Petra's smack-dab in the middle of it. She's juggling a little heartache, a lot of disbelief, and she still has to hide her ability to see the dead or the gods (both old and new) might smite her. Which NOBODY wants. Really.
Oh, and there's a weapon of mass destruction that needs to be stopped.
Marc's reappearance throws her for a loop. Sneaking behind enemy lines is pretty darn dangerous. Accidentally meeting the parameters of various prophecies (which never tell her if she's on the right track or about to make everything worse for those around her) is mentally and emotionally exhausting. In other words, Petra's got a pretty full plate and things just keep getting more chaotic despite how she tries to stay out of the limelight.
One more book to go to see how it all plays out. I'm ready!
This second installment of Monster M*A*S*H starts off a few weeks after book 1 with a shaky truce, the MASH 3063rd has become a supernatural clinic, attending a pregnant Medusa. Petra and Galen are still together when he is called back to the action and leaves her high and dry. Devastated, she goes on with her life until she finds a note that leads her to Marc, who is supposed to be dead for the last 10 years. He's been fighting for the other side but needs her to talk to his partner at the lab where they were creating medicine, but he has his suspicions.
Now, let me tell you, I'm super confused and have mixed feelings about Marc. I love Galen, but I kind of love Marc too. They're both so infuriating and noble at the same time. Petra has now history with both of them, but I still have hope for Galen . Also, I have a hate/love relationship with the action in these books because, even if Petra is in the middle of all the prophesies, she usually isn't directly involved with the fight.
I love this series. I have never read the first version, but I love this one, this is 100% Angie's style, and I adore her. The humor in it, it's so natural, and I love how she mashes up the action with the mystery about the prophecies. Also, I love the sugar in it, and even if we don't have full descriptions, I still feel the passion and the love between them.
I won a copy of this book, otherwise I would have started with the first book in the series. I have since purchased the first book and intend to go back and read it.
This book is set in Limbo. Supernatural beings have been drafted against their wills into armies to fight for either the old gods or the new gods. The main character is a doctor. She is tired of treating the wounded in the MASH-style medical camp on her side. She has a research hut in a dump of sorts filled with booby traps. There, she has been trying to find a way to anaesthetize creatures so she can operate on them without them being conscious the whole time. Meanwhile, her boyfriend dumped her and a former boyfriend, who ended up being drafted in the opposing army, sneaks over to her side to warn her about rumors of a new deadly weapon being developed on that side. There are also prophecies being announced periodically on a TV-like service. She already figured out in the previous book that those prophecies were about her and that every time one prophecy is fulfilled, a new one is announced.
This is a neat, original story with lots of interesting characters trying to survive a war they don't fully understand why they are fighting and don't always know what their own side is doing.
Back to Limbo, with a cease fire in the war between the old gods and the new gods, Dr Petra Robichaud and her paranormally staffed MASH unit has time for a breather and a change of pace from stitching wounded demigods back together. But of course prophecy has something else in mind for Petra, and her life goes from calm to "interesting" when her "dead" fiancé shows up to rope Petra into a secret mission - and the secret has far reaching consequences for the human world. I liked Transylvania Twist even better than book 1, Monster Mash, even though it did take me a bit to get over Galen's departure and warm up to Petra's former fiancé Marc (but dragon shifter trumps demi god:) I thought the race against the prophecy was good and Petra's werewolf and vampire tent mates add an element of fun. I am looking forward to the final book and seeing how the prophecy throws more spanners in the works and hoping for HEAs and homecomings for Petra and her friends.
I love this series. Petra is still at the MASH unit but with the truce between the Gods it’s a different place. When Medusa comes in for prenatal cate Petra takes the case when others are to scared. One night Mark shows up!! That’s right Mark her supposed dead ex. Mark needs her help. Mark is trying to solve what his former boss was working on. He is worried it’s a weapon of mass destruction. Poor Petra can’t figure out her feelings for Mark but decides she has to help if it will save others.
The Transylvania Twist, sequel to the Monster MASH, is just as fun as the first book! It's a perfect blend of suspense, romance and humor. It was fast paced with a lot of adventure. It takes you on a wild ride that keeps you wanting to know what will happen next. I love the characters especially Petra. She's so snarky!
Overall, this was a fun read filled with unique characters. I can't wait to know what happens next!
This book is fun, romantic and funny. It’s a very enjoyable read. Angie’s characters make you fall in love with them and really get into the story. Loved this fantasy book!
Quick & Dirty: A fun, dark and humorous novel. The main character has a few annoying flaws but don’t let that deter you from enjoying this novel.
Opening Sentence: Medusa, serpent-goddess, executioner of men, scourge of Kisthene’s plain, stabbed a clawed finger in my direction.
The Review:
Petra finds herself taking advantage of the peace surrounding her camp after the “cease-fire” to the war. The camp has transformed the hospital from just solely being a trauma unit to helping gods/goddesses and demigods for basic healthcare needs. For the first time since she was drafted, Petra is actually enjoying herself and the life she has in limbo. Then Immortally Embraced completely tears apart Dr. Petra Robichaud’s love life. It rips it to shreds before slowly repairing itself. And that is just Petra’s heart.
Galen is sent on a secret mission, which he can’t tell Petra anything about, but before he goes he dumps her. Galen believes he is doing the right thing. He wants Petra to move on and be happy without him and not worry if he dies on his mission. Petra is, of course, understandably upset but it doesn’t take her long to get over it. A blast from the past finds Petra at her camp and asks for her help. He needs her ability to see ghosts to see if his colleague was murdered. Petra tries to fight her attraction at first, thinking only of Galen but it doesn’t take her long to give in to past desires.
Immortally Embraced was not at all what I thought. Petra’s moved on to another man. Events that I thought were going to happen, didn’t happen. At first, I wasn’t really sure what I thought about her being with another man but as events unfolded I was slowly won over. I have mixed feelings about both men. The new guy is a bit more demanding and forceful with his needs towards Petra than Galen was. He is quite moody too. Petra on the other hand runs the gamut from being almost superwoman to breaking down almost into a stupor. She goes on the mission to speak with the ghost with almost no hesitation (she does question some things) but she risks her life to find out what new superweapon the old gods are building. She no longer questions the oracles and their predictions. But as soon as something goes wrong she breaks down and settles for failure. That was really the only thing that I had a problem with.
The mythology in this series is fun, incorporating a lot of little gods I’ve never even heard of. (And I love some mythology.) Although this series doesn’t really spend too much time on any single god or goddess. This series also has kind of an urban fantasy feel as it sticks with just Petra’s first person point of view for both novels.
Overall, Immortally Embraced is a fun, dark and humorous novel with some “hot” moments. As much as Petra can be frustrating at times, I really like the supporting cast of characters in this novel and I will definitely check out Immortally Ever After when it hits the shelves in August.
Notable Scene:
He drew me close and silenced me with a kiss. “I thought I was never going to see you again,” he said, grating against my mouth.
I pulled away. “I thought I killed you.” I tried to get my bearings as he slid his hands down my back, cupping my ass. I’d never expected him and I’d never expected this and holy frick I wanted to eat him alive.
“Wait,” I gasped as he ground against me, “We can’t do this.” Not again.
Yes, he was here, and yes I wanted him, but I had to be strong.
His eyes were molten, his breath hitching. “I can’t stop thinking about you.”
Which was another reason for me to step away, end the embrace.
“What about your goddess?” I asked. “What did you promise her?” Maybe I could pick a fight. I drew my fingers down his arm in the exact same place she had. I wanted to erase her.
He hissed. “I want you, Petra.” He eased me back against the lab table.
He felt so good. So right. But we had to get one thing straight right away. “I’m not going to sleep with you.”
What we had-what we could never have now-was eating me alive. He might be able to separate it, but I couldn’t.
He yanked me against him until I could feel him–all of him–hot and heavy against me. “Then just kiss me.”
His gaze locked with mine. “There’s never been anyone like you. Never will be.”
His words cut into me. I couldn’t take that. I couldn’t open myself to him like that anymore.
He kissed me long and hard, until I lost my mind. Until I was wet with it.

IMMORTALLY EMBRACED picks up a few months after Angie Fox’ s IMMORTALLY YOURS (REVIEW). Peace, in the form of a cease fire, has arrived. Galen has given up his immortality for Petra, the doctor who saved his life but has not left the New Gods' army and has been given a special assignment.
Without giving away too much of this book it is again Petra, a MASH surgeon, going off on an epic heroic journey, to the other side. We’re in a stage set landscape, with two suns, vents to hell, and dead trees. Additionally there are the flying monsters and the soldiers of the other side.
Facing the truth of what’s going on in the camp of the old army, Petra and her friend must face a serious reality and try to stop it. At the same time, Petra has to develop an anesthetic that works on immortals.
Petra reminds me of Sisyphus. Medicine and compassion are the rocks she is faced with having to roll up the interminable hill in a war the reason for which is somewhat irrelevant. It’s the new gods versus the old gods. A generational war of gods conscripting humans for life. Petra is one of those; a doctor forced to serve in a mobile mash unit.
Dealing with the obvious issues of what’s being perped by the old army are the wider issues.
Probably more important to the story are the human issues of love and friendship; love and abandonment.
The writing is excellent with good descriptive and emotive expression and it's accessible in terms of pop culture and language. Petra is quirky, noble, and brave, her roommates are as well. She’s in love with the ex-god, Galen and he’s pretty much your noble-hero-Greek-demi-god type. Another male love interest is not defined much except through Petra’s memories, thoughts, emotions and reactions. We know of his history from the first book, but not him.The only vibe I got was that he was someone I wouldn't exactly trust.
Deciding whether to work with serendipity when the outcome is uncertain is a problem for Petra. So much of her life is uncertain; so little remains from her past. The hook-ups are hot and electrifying. The pace is rapid. Angie uses standard mythological names for her otherworldly creatures; something I find helpful. The setting is a stage set of unpleasant landscape. It's hard to visualize and very unpleasant.
I enjoyed this book a great deal. It recently came out, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it to lovers of paranormal romance with a gritty edge to it. Especially if you enjoyed the 1970s TV program, MASH.
