As a local domestic violence and sexual assault counselor, the respect of her community is critical to Lorna Reardon. That would be hard to maintain if they found out she was seeing a younger man.
Twelve years doesn’t matter to Gant “G-man” Meadows. Once he tells Tank Reardon that his mom is “hot,” Tank and Pops go to work on Lorna until she gives the guy a chance. For a firefighter, metalsmith, and former motorcycle club member, Gant is surprisingly genteel, spiritual, and gentle. He’s also determined to keep her safe from an unexpected threat, even though she’s relegated him to nothing more than a dirty little secret in her life.
Gant’s sworn he’ll love her forever, and he’s willing to make the ultimate sacrifice with no regret. The regret will be all Lorna’s. Regret that’s harsh. Regret that’s sharp. Regret that’s deep.

Ok I'm only about 30% through with this but my DNF radar is ticking so I'm not sure I'll make it much further.
The story isn't terrible so far, moving along at a decent pace, but there are some points that are *really* jarring.
The H is white but has Black daughters and almost every time they're described the author mentions their strong, gleaming white teeth, which is just...yeah. Doesn't really seem to happen when white characters are described. Huh. Weird. (Disclaimer I think there is one sentence where he's describing a picture of him with his girls and he says they all have white teeth, but other than that it just seems to be the daughters described that way.)
H says he still loves his ex as a friend but then when his daughters tell him she'd called them to tell them she was 'really sick' he doesn't go 'OMG, is she ok??' You know, like you would, if someone who you still loved and had been married to for 11 years said that. No. He goes, 'And?'
Turns out she wasn't sick anyway because of course exes are *always* super flaky/deceitful. He then says he doesn't care what she's doing and rolls his eyes hard at everything his/her daughters tell him about her. Why even bother saying he still loves her as a friend when he obviously has nothing but contempt for her?
So now he's out with the h and they're both having a good old bitch-fest about his ex because *get this* she's dating a much younger guy. They are judging her HARD. And the best part? The h in this story is 12 years older than the H. But with absolutely zero self-awareness, she's saying (and H is agreeing) how it's so disgusting and gross that H's Ex knew this new bf when he was a child. Ummm ok, lady, and when you were 21, H was 9 years old. So you may want to hold your horses there!
I guess I'll persevere a little longer with this but I'm just not in the mood for forcing myself to waste time finishing books that leave a bad taste in my mouth. If it still feels like a battle by the end of the next chapter, I'm out.
**Update** I got a few pages on. This is UNBELIEVABLE. OMFG. I. Am. Done.
As a woman of a certain age, I love reading about mature women and younger men and this heartwarming story did not disappoint.
The quiet and reserved Gant "G-Man" Meadows is a no-nonsense kind of guy with an interesting, colorful and lonely past. As a father, a former motorcycle club member, a metalworker at renaissance faires, and now the owner of Fair Meadows Sculpture and Metalsmithing and a volunteer fireman, he has learned a lot about life. He is comfortable with himself. He knows what he wants. And he wants the beautiful and stubborn Lorna Reardon. With a blessing from Lorna's son, Tank, and Gant's firefighter colleague, and Pops, Lorna's family friend and Gant's boss, Gant asks Lorna out and the relationship begins with a small hitch. To Gant's frustration, Lorna wants to keep them a secret.
Lorna works at a rape crisis center and women's shelter and prides herself in protecting her clients and maintaining a respectful reputation at her job. So when she starts an affair with the generous and younger Gant, she wants to keep their relationship on the down-low though she feels safe and so much happier when he is around. Does age really matter when it comes to love?
Their original awkwardness is sweet considering their ages, but we learn that Lorna has only been with one man in her life and Gant has never been with someone of Lorna's caliber. From the unrestrained way he talks about sex to his love of meditation, Gant's plain-spoken honesty is refreshing. My heart broke for him when Lorna was being an idiot. I had to agree with Lorna's son, Tank, that she was being an asshole to Gant. As for Lorna, I tried to empathize with her naivety and unworldliness when it came to intimacy and relationships considering she had only been with her husband, but her hurtful treatment of Gant's feelings made me dislike her. When Gant decides enough is enough, a life-changing event prompts Lorna to make a decision that she hopes is not too late.
I recommend this captivating feel-good story filled with steam, honesty, conflict, and life-changing moments.
Thank you to Ms. Hall for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
I'm not a spring chicken these days, and you would think that I could get behind an older woman/younger man, but for whatever reason, it's not to my taste (maybe because I would throat punch any cougar coming after my son). That being said, Deanndra Hall has become a go t0 author, so I didn't even read the blurb & thank goodness that I didn't because I may or may not have had a block towards Lorna & Gant but I LOVED this story HARD! She's the older woman who has an impeccable reputation working at a rape crisis center/shelter, so she's all about the optics of her life. Gant is the younger man with a huge heart, and he wants Lorna. They start something up but she wants to keep them on the down low, which had my back up since he was a fantastic hero who didn't deserve to be someone's dirty little secret. It's very rare when I want to hurt the heroine because of girl power & all, but I wanted to choke Lorna out more than once because she couldn't seem to learn that love is love, and finally, Gant has had enough (he truly deserved better). To see how it all pans out, you know what to do! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
3.75 stars- FIGHTING FOR LORNA by Deanndra Hall is a stand alone, contemporary, adult, erotic, romantic suspense storyline found in the multi-authored Police and Fire: Operation Alpha (Badge of Honor: Tarpley VFD Season 2) series. This is forty-six year old, volunteer fire fighter and metal welder Gant ‘G-man’ Meadows, and fifty eight year old, widow and domestic violence counselor Lorna Reardon’s story line. FIGHTING FOR LORNA can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
NOTE: The Police and Fire: Operation Alpha (Badge of Honor: Tarpley VFD ) series is based and focuses on characters found in author Susan Stoker’s numerous series and story lines.
WARNING: FIGHTING FOR LORNA makes reference to, and follows a case of domestic abuse that may be a trigger for most sensitive readers.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Gant and Lorna) FIGHTING FOR LORNA follows the building romance and age-gap relationship between forty-six year old, volunteer fire fighter and metal welder Gant ‘G-man’ Meadows, and fifty eight year old, widow, mother and domestic violence counselor Lorna Reardon. Gant Meadows is a fire-fighter at the Tarpley Volunteer Fire Department ,and has always kept himself separate from the men with whom he works until meeting the mother of one of his fellow fire fighters, a woman twelve years his senior but a woman who stirs something deep within our story line hero. Lorna Reardon has been widowed since losing her husband in a house fire years before and in the aftermath put herself through college with the help of Pops, at the local TVFD. As the resident ‘house mother’ Lorna is always baking goodies for the men and women at TVFD but a recent visit reveals that Lorna has caught the eye of a volunteer fire-fighter, a man few people know little about. Enter Gant ‘G-man’ Meadows. What ensues is the slow seduction of Lorna by our story line hero, and the fall-out as Lorna struggles with appearances and perception; and a domestic abuse case that is about to go all to h*ll.
Lorna Reardon is a widowed, single mother whose job it is to protect the privacy of domestic abuse victims but our heroine struggles with preconceived notions and the potential judgement of others, not about her clients, but about her own personal life with a man twelve years her junior. Falling quickly for our story line hero, Lorna refuses to take their relationship public, and in doing so, threatens any future with the man with whom she will fall in love. Gant Meadows is a divorced, father of two, but has never fallen in love before meeting Lorna Reardon. Having lived alone for a number of years, Gant struggles with the demons from his past, and the building love for a woman who is keeping their relationship a dirty little secret.
The relationship between Lorna and Gant is an age-gap romance, one of immediate attraction but Lorna battles between head and heart, and the impression and perception about her relationship with a man twelve years her junior. Gant isn’t willing to be Lorna’s dirty little secret, and in this, our hero must make a decision that will break his heart. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and charismatic secondary and supporting characters including many of the volunteer fire fighters at TVFD. We are introduced to Lorna’s son Tank Reardon, and senior fire-fighter Pops, Sheriff Riggs, Texas Ranger Dax Chambers, as well as Lorna’s co-worker Leigh Ann, and Gant’s daughter Amethyst and Sapphire.
FIGHTING FOR LORNA is a story of secrets and lies; family, friendships, relationships and love; domestic abuse, and power and control. The premise is dramatic and emotional; the characters are energetic and captivating; the romance is impassioned and hot but Lorna’s need to keep their romance a secret is a shot of cold water on an otherwise wonderful story.
Gant is a first responder and that’s just his side job. His other job is just as interesting. Lorna likes that she’s gotten noticed by a man. There’s an age difference between the two but it seems to bother her more than it does Gant.
Our author has created an age-gap that I found didn’t matter. It mattered more to Lorna than anything else. I actually felt sorry for Gant. He’s a nice caring guy and she’s a woman who seems to think things to death. If I was in his circle of friends, I probably would have told him to move on. I have to think that the author took lots of time when it came to these two. If she can get the reader involved and wanting to meet with one of the main characters, you have to figure that she’s pretty creative.
For Gant’s sake I really did want to like Lorna. For being so smart she came off as pretty dumb sometimes. Society has changed a lot, especially in recent years, but when I try to picture her, I start to go back several decades in my head. I looked forward to the suspense and wanting to see how that was all going to play out. Sorry to say but Lorna did not hold my attention for most of the story due to the way she treated Gant. She made my fingers itch to move ahead in the book.
But I’m glad that I talked myself out of it. I was glad to see that Gant got what he wanted but my head was still not sure about Lorna. I kept hearing the saying, “a leopard can’t change its spots” when I thought of her. The ending left me wanting to see what would happen over time. I guess that just means reading more of the series to see if these two will pop up in something along the way.
I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
AGE! Does it matter in love? One answer it matters if you let it. Gant didn't care. He fell hard for Lorna. Not so much Lorna. What would everyone think of her? Her family, friends, colleagues?
They certainly had chemistry. They were different had different histories. She had many friends and a big family. He was new to the area and building his reputation.
Were they too different to be together? Are twelve years too much? They are questions that each has to answer. I love Gant. He was a character that warmed my heart. Not so much Lorna. I wanted her to commit or stay away. But then where would the conflict be that makes the story. There were strong characters and when danger hits everyone has to make a decision--including Lorna.
Steam, friendship, loyalty, emotions, and more will keep you reading from start to finish. Reviewed for Words Turn Me On
Fighting for Lorna By Deanndra Hall Main Characters: Lorna and Gant I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author. 5 out of 5 stars Loved this book and the characters. About 74% into the book I had an ugly cry. This book has all the feels in it. Chemistry, love, fear, suspense, sadness, and of course a HEA ending. This is the first book I have read by this author and would love to read more. This is also one of my favorite genre's older woman-younger man. Gant has an interesting past. He was in a motorcycle club, does metalworking mostly at renaissance faires, and is a volunteer fireman in a small town. Lorna is an older woman working in a rape crisis center/shelter. Lorna's son is also a fireman. This book was sweet, steamy, heartbreaking, and original. Don't you just wish there were more men like Gant in this world? This was the first book by this author that I have read and would love to read more by her.
I didn't really get along with this book for the most part as i found Lorna, the female MC a bit stuck in her perceptions. I could almost see where she had a bit of worry with the fact that Gant, the male MC was younger than her, but the way it became an issue where she started acting like he was so much younger than her instead of a 12. Especially when he was nearing 50, i mean really. So yeah big annoyance there. Gant was an alright character i guess, bit of a thumbs down in the way he described his ex-wife ( still a friend, but then he really got into her when speaking about her to Lorna, not the actions/words of someone who is meant to be a friend) ,he was quite a simple guy, wanted peace, a good woman/second chance at love with a mature woman who he though he had found until her treatment of him.
I was a bit confused about when he was in the hospital and she was the first to see him, i would have expected his kids to do so, but it wasn't mentioned at all.
An easy roundup to the story. Nice secondary characters and an easy going town.
I knew this one would be a winner since it was this author and this world. This was also relatable being someone close to me was getting out of a abusive marriage with learning the ins and outs of domestic violence that some states really need to update some of the policies and procedures because they put the victims and children in deadly paths still. Lorna was a counselor for that area so that where she lives she feels respect is a big key to it all. So when she does come across someone whom cherishes her there is one thing wrong with it all she does. I actually wanted to shake her a time or too on it. Danger will come knocking with it shining a light on the wrong turn she has taken on her "secret". You will get all twisted and worried yourself wondering how wrong can turn into right. Gant is me worth it all too.
Loving this new series of Tarpley VFD. Gant is a volunteer and my heart did break for him when you read his back story. I just wanted to wrap him up in a massive hug and tell him someone cared for him. Then he sees Lorna and he wants to make a life. Having adopted daughters and a ex wife, you know from the story that he wants companionship and that he is lonely. At first I loved Lorna but then the way she treated Gant had me spewing feathers with the way she hurt him and acted. From the last few chapters my heart was breaking between a death of a friend and people's lives hanging in the balance. I have to admit it I cried and if I cried then it was a book worth reading. Couldn't get enough of them.
This is a May-September romance only not the usual direction. When Gant met Lorna at the fire house he commented to Tank that she was hot! Tank let him know that was his mother, Gant don't care he wanted to get to know her better. Lorna finds Gant very intriguing and is willing to get to know him better but wants to keep it a secret due to her additional 12 years she has. This stumbling block causes real strain in their relationship and a possible end to them. Lorna has a job counseling at a rape/crisis center and as a result she ends up in dire straights. Will Gant be able to save her and will he live to see the next day, much less a life long love story?
This is honestly my first book out of thousands that I’ve read where I feel like the h(Lorna) really did the H(Gant) wrong.
Gant did everything right. He wanted to be there for Lorna and her children. He wanted the responsibility and all she could see was his age and be worried about what she would look like to the public.
I felt so bad for Gant and thought he had every right to give up but he never did. What he sacrificed for her is something most men would never do.
I never expected to say a woman needed to grovel and she didn’t grovel near enough in my opinion.
This book isn’t your typical romance so be prepared.
From their first meeting Gant was attracted to Lorna and he is undeterred by the fact that she is more than a decade older than him. With the support of those closest to her he knows that he is the man she needs in her life and now he just needs to convince her.
Lorna is attracted to Gant and she is open to a relationship with him, but she is concerned about how others will perceive them being together. Will she realize that the only opinions that truly matter are their own before it is too late?
Gant is so patient and understanding as Lorna grapples with what is truly important but seeing them face adversity and become the couple they were meant to be was great to see.
Gant....there are no words. He is quiet, withdrawn, thoughtful, giving, so emotionally damaged but equally strong at the same time. Lorna however, I really hated at numerous points in this book, she does redeam herself.....eventually, but by this point I was more than done with her! This has to be the most emotionally draining book of the Tarpley VFD series but no matter how much I was crying I couldn't stop, couldn't put it down. I read through the tears and the night, reading this in one sitting. Fantastic!
Fighting for Lorna: WOW! Fantastic story ups and downs! I liked that Gant was attracted to an older woman. It should matter to anyone who you fall in love with. It should be between the two of you. I liked Lorna and Gant together because it's gets her back out there but it also shows her children that she can have a good time and smile with someone else. I really enjoyed their story.
I really enjoyed this book. At points I wanted to scream at Lorna. I couldn't put book down once I started.
Age doesn't mean a thing when it comes to love.
I loved Gant and Lorna together, they just had chemistry from beginning. I wanted to shake Lorna quite a lot in this book. But when she gives in it's amazing.
Gant will be your next book boyfriend! He is an amazing character and one of my favorite this author has written. Lorna is complex and at times I wanted to shake her. There is a lot to love in this story. Romance, suspense, and more. The chemistry between Gant and Lorna is off the charts. This one shows age is just a number when the heart is involved.
Lorna met Gant when she brought came for the fire department. Tank was her son, also a member of the fire department, when she left Gant told him he thought Lorna was hot. They were talking about a sculpture that Gant. Was making for the elementary school. So he invited her to come and see it.
Age does not matter after all that he pledged to her she couldn’t take that leap of faith until it was almost too late intense action to rescue her I was crying you can’t turn love off and on it’s always there but she did a great job making up for it lots of sizzling romance and a surprise engagement party wonderful happy ending for the whole Reardon family
Absolutely loved Gant he is being placed on my book boyfriend list. He was an alpha but a giant teddy bear who loved to dirty talk. I honestly have a love hate relationship with Lorna. My heart broke for Gant when she decided to keep him her secret. Gant made this story, I just wish Lorna had more of a backbone. Happy Reading!
This was a great read, had a lot of emotions and even had me tearing up at certain times. The story was a younger man and older women. The characters were great and had a lot of soul searching to be even better people. They definitely got there HEA, but had to go through tuff stuff in order to get it. Great read.
It’s a good story. I just utterly despise Lorna, what a horrible coward. I think if Gant was just a little less perfect, kind and wonderful, I might have tolerated her behavior more but he isn’t and she treated him despicably, if this had been the other way around all those 5 star reviews would be screaming for blood.
I LOVE reading books where the characters are REAL! The fluffy alpha books are ok for an escape but I love a great story where I can actually picture the characters in my head. Lorna and Gant may not be your typical couple cue to the age difference, but the love they come to have for one another blows me away!!
Gant is a guy that stays to himself. When he meets Lorna, he is automatically drawn to her, and she to him. But because of their age difference, she is afraid for her family and friends to know. There is definitely enough drama and romance to keep you coming back for more.
Age doesn't matter in this exciting story. I loved Gant and had a hard time with Lorna at times although as the reader we understand some of her wariness. She is older and I love seeing the stories where the man is younger but so mature. I practically devoured this and couldn't put it down.
I have really enjoyed the stories in the series. Lorna and Grant are drawn to each other but they have their struggles dealing with the age difference and what the community will think of them. The story is emotional, sexy, and suspenseful.
This story has great characters. It explores the younger man/older woman relationship from the the male's perspective. This has created a good, well crafted story that takes you for an emotional journey. (Probab
I thought the story started out slow. I was not sure I was going to like it. I thought Gant was a little too weak and Lorna too selfish. But oh my, I’m so glad I kept reading. I cried, I laughed, and I cried some more. I ended up loving this book
This book was awesome. I loved Gant and Lorna's story. Alot of times we let society tell us who we should love. It should never be that way. If you love them be sure to tell them and show them everyday.
Such a great read, but I was about to kick Lorna's Ass ..If dhd didnt get her head out of it...Gant is just a plain Alpha guy...But he took more then ..I would have...butit all worked out for them..Hippy...finally ...but still a wonderful story.I did enjoy it.
