Alex is quickly becoming accustomed to life in the strange world of Aventoll. He’s won two Duels already, along with two estates and two gorgeous wives. But success breeds jealousy, and Alex discovers he has a target on his back. Alex’s enemies want him dead so they can take his wives and estate, but they don’t know Alex isn’t from their world. And he doesn’t play by their rules.
Simply not a good book. Picking up where the first one left off, it seems like they don't really want to push too far forward because there's probably a dozen of these they want to churn out. The story meanders for most of the book with no real aim or purpose. All the relationships that had barely just started in the first book are zoomed well past any believable amount of progression, to where everyone is best friends with one another and act as if they've been so for life. Alex and Horus are cracking jokes at each other left and right, and roaring with laughter as a result. Zoie and Shay are soul sisters and inseparable. The farmhands that were bequeathed upon Alex are instantly loyal, the to-the-death kind. And Rylan is so enamored with Alex that he wants him to be his foster dad, even though Alex is only like 11 years older than he is. It all feels so fake, all of it is unearned, and it's incredibly dull to read. The villains are laughably one-note, and no real time is spent on developing them. Even worse than the first book, we don't meet this book's main antagonist until like the last 10% of the book, where Alex has a mere two interactions with him. Why not spend some of the previous time where pointless crap was happening to develop villains? No, instead we get way too many pages of way too detailed and involved construction. In a harem novel. No one comes to these to read about building a barn. The overbearing and abundant similes were toned down in this novel. However, instead, the bad trend of Capitalizing Random Words to poorly add emphasis was used even more. It's bad writing. This book is all poorly written.
All in all, I don't think I'll bother reading more of this series. The premise is not interesting enough to keep me engaged, and the writing quality is just so terrible. I'd rather try out any of the thousands of practically identical series out there and hope for a better time. But, hey, perhaps I'll be bored enough some day to see how this continues. I doubt it, but I won't rule it out.
This was a good book 2. Solid plot and verbal storyline however I took 2 stars off because every relationship the main character has is instant. And it annoyed me more in book 2 than in book 1. He falls in near instant love with his second wife. Near instant best friendship ness with his wife’s brother. He adopts a kid and loves the kid near instantly. He’s only been on the new world for like 2 -3 weeks maximum so it makes all of these feelings and relationships feel disingenuous
Personally I think this is one of Eric’s better series. I was not a fan of the Making Monster Girls series and found this one better suited my tastes in main characters and settings. The MC is young man who has come out of the fostering system somewhat jaded and then is transported to a new world. He find a place for himself in the heart of an abused cat girl warrior, which has turned him around into a more confident and open person. Dueling and winning brings property and possessions, which includes the people of the loosing duelist. With this Alex now has two estates and two wives. Read the book to find out how all that goes.
Hands down my favorite series. This book has ensured that The Duelist will be one of the series that I read through multiple times. More world building in this story. Excellent character development across all the characters and Zoie is officially my favorite cat-girl ever. I hope this series ends up being a long lasting one that continues to develop for the next few years as more and more books are added to the series.
I have been a long time Fan of Eric Valls books, and when the first Duelist book came out, I immediately loved the ideas, concepts and characters that were introduced, along with this brand new world.
After reading this, the second book in this series, I can happily say that this is by far the best series I have read from Eric Valls collection... And by far my favourite.
Please don't make me wait as long for the next one!
Alex not only has gathered his two gorgeous wives, but others have been swept into his orbit and family. Others want what he has, and dual him to win it. He must use all his wiles, strength, and powers to protect his new family. There seem to be political motives beyond greed at play. I like the action, humor, and romance. I look forward to the next book.
This one was worse than the first one. There was lots of stuffing like there was this 20pages part where they were fixing describing every technique used, just to let it fall few pages later and then another 20 pages of rebuilding the same barn. I was regularly skipping paragraphs just to get to the end of the book and did not miss anything from the story, as there was not much of the story. Two stars just for the attempt and good editting.
It just bounces you back and forth from one problem to the next ..but in an awesome way..hard to define the solutions to the obstacles thrown in his way..great read..keeps you involved from the beginning and guessing page after page ..need next book..
I’ve read a lot from this author and I think the Duelist is some of his best work yet. The relationships are real, the action is great. The slice of life touches are a nice little respite. While there isn’t as much action in this book than the first, the character building makes up for it. Looking forward to book 3!
Alex with the help of Zoie, Shay and a plethora of friends is learning how to survive on Aventoll. Not just to survive assorted wild life and demons but the evil in the Ashers hearts. Along the way he becomes a a foster dad and quite wealthy. Great treachery, battle and bedroom activities.
This is such an incredible series! The MC has so much heart and you really feel for him and the other fascinating characters! I cannot wait for the next adventure!
Another great installment been waiting for this for a while but it didnt disappointment there was alot of relationship building which was good to see and a new cloaked enemy rears its head its getting good really good
Loved the first one liked this one a lot. Looking forward to more. The time span on things seems odd. He's only been there for like a couple weeks now? But some events get talked about like they happened ages ago, some like it's only been a few days.
Certainly the most unique series yet, it's a feudal world of all or nothing when it comes to power! I'm really looking forward to where the series goes and how it will unfold!
After winning Shay and the estate in the duel, Alex begins to repair the first one. But trouble follows him. Challenged by the vulture duelist over some bogus accusations, he is required to fight him. A good read.
Sooo satisfying. The humor is getting better defined and the plot is advancing well. Definitely loving this series and will continue to get the rest of it
A fun and entertaining story continues with this book in series. It is an old and yet original theme with likable and well developed characters. A series worthy of your consideration of reading. Enjoy!
My title says it quite well, this is an awesome continuation of the story that keeps me on pins and needles. Fortunately, for me, the next book is already published.
The Duelist series if fantastic. I just finished book two. Which I found to be just as good as book one. The characters remain as realistic as before. As too does the storyline.
