Swing continues it's love story of a married couple trying swinging and their mistakes and triumphs!

This time we start with some fighting. After Cathy sees one of their swing friends at work and doesn't mention it to Dan and Dan finds out, things go sour. They fight, they go to therapy, and they try to fix things. This all feels a bit rushed and probably the worst but of something that could have been more interesting given it took its time. However, the second half is far more interesting and fun. Cathy continuing her growth as a character and business. Dan finally working towards his life goal. Some more threesums, 4sums, and then orgies. Family moments that have heart even which is nice. And a ending that'll make you want volume 4.

I don't know if I enjoyed this as much as volume 1-2 but I did enjoy it still to read on. I'll settle with a 3.5 this time.

Volume 3 of Yishan Li and Matt Hawkins's sexually adventurous couple, Dan and Cathay continue. Vol 2 had left us expecting a Dan to become a more active partner as the couple slowly moves deeper into the swinging life style. Instead, he reverts back to his cautious self. Cathay is mostly ready for them to experiment further. Wife sharing, threesomes, foursomes and a toe into the orgy scene. He has rules and reluctance.
Besides the almost carefully dawn art work of always beautiful people en flagrante, Volume four has a few more reminders that all of their fun takes place in part of a larger reality that includes curious young children and a suspicious mother-in-law. Even as dating is a snake pit for single folks finding the right match ups for couples with rules remains a matter of rules before looks, and looks before anything else. The swinging waters are as shallow as all relationship building and navigating is work.

What stays constant with the earlier volumes is the series is consciously a how to guide. There is little effort to over romanticizes the journey. Either the female leads in full agreement or the question of consent remains a problem. Being a young couple, they have no time for bellies going slack or the usual indications of child birth. It continues to bother me that Cathay is Asian, but she is never drawn as such and her ethnic persona only seems to be acknowledged when she is dealing with her mother. Volume three ends with the usual instructional paragraphs, guidance for newbies. The storyline ends with a real world change up that may make volume 4, if there is one a much steeper lesson in life as a swinger.

I have to reiterate my original complaint: There isn’t enough story for the writers to keep creating multiple volumes. This is one graphic novel at best.

That said, this volume just pissed me off.

Manufactured conflict - generated by the woman, of course - is where this volume starts. You know, after the stupid recap of the other two volumes. Sigh.

Dan actually says, “I’ve never been with a Black girl before.” Because, you know, Black women have completely different physiology than other women. So Dan sees Black women as other, as apparently, do the writers. Grrrrrr!

Grandma remains dour and unhappy, she’s even painted as the villain, even when she’s making an incredibly sensible point.

While the Asian mom continues to be a burden and used as an employee, Dan’s dad gets to be the fun parent. Dan and his father have a more in-depth conversation in this one volume than Cathy and her mother have in three volumes.

We introduce self-hate into one of the children, who complains about having to eat Asian food when he’s with his grandmother. That’s delightful. Of course this is never addressed by the writers or the main characters. Their daughter, the only sensible person in that family of four, confronts her brother, but it's never explored.

There are a few things I find wildly misogynistic about this volume:
*

I appreciate the authors defining the terms used in The Lifestyle. I kind of appreciate some explanations about other parts of the narrative, but they seem pretty obviously either autobiographical or self-explanatory. Those pages are the only necessary extra pages. In total there are 82 extra preview pages (and this pages are repeats in volumes 1 and 2). It serves to prove my point that, beyond the story not being compelling enough to spread out over multiple books, there isn’t enough content to warrant the multiple volumes of this series.

The problems I had with the illustrations in Volume 2 are exacerbated here - Cathy barely looks Asian at all in this volume. WTF?!

I read Volume 3 because I hoped this was getting wrapped up, but apparently there’s another volume on the horizon. I’m certainly going to pass. I just don’t care what happens to Dan or Cathy.

I really dislike the way Yishan Li draws breasts and coming back to the series for the last three volumes really drove that home. They're so fake and not in an implant sort of way. They look as though they don't move at all. Ever. Not in any of the nude scenes, not when being touched by a partner. They're being supported by an invisible pushup bra (up and together) at all times. They also have microscopic nipples and no areolae. This applies to all breasts, not just those of the MC, which is also sad. I think she and I have different ideas of what makes breasts appealing. (Movement, variation, an enjoyable bullseye, etc.)

Okay, that's enough about boobs. There's an STD scare and a pregnancy surprise at the end, which I really could have done without. Also a stupid fight. Really, this volume has it all!

A look at the alternative lifestyle - revealing and sexy

I have not read Volume 2 but a synopsis at the start explains how this couple try the swinging lifestyle and the effect on their lives. This continues in this volume as they meet others and develop what they are getting into. There’s some introspection and character development as well, of course, of sex scenes. It’s titillating and entertaining stuff. I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

While this album was fun, I felt like it didn't really give me much new stuff. I like how they've involved the many dramatical moments of a lifestyle marraige, as well as a normal marraige, but I have to admit that's not why I'm reading the comic. It is still interesting, though, if a little scary at times. Guess that shows how well-written the characters are, if nothing else ;)

The third installment of Swing by Matt Hawkins somewhat leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Which is devastating because I actually do enjoy this series and couple.

However, it took a huge nosedive with this one.

Overall, I am honestly disappointed in this volume. I am not sure I want to pick up the next one, if I am honest with you.

(Zero spoiler review for the deluxe edition collecting this volume)
I have an exceedingly long TBR pile. Years of books I've been looking forward to reading just sitting there, piling up. So to disregard them all and crack open a brand-new arrival is a pretty big deal. I'm not sure what it was exactly that made me think Swing would be worthy of jumping such a heralded and lengthy que, but boy oh boy, I sure balls'd that one up.
Lacking the sophistication, the character development, the charm of its cousin Sunstone, Swing is the generic, paint by numbers, mentally deficient relation to that aforementioned, much better title. It didn't take long after starting Swing to realise not only the mistake I'd made, but the scale of it as well. I would recommend experiencing such literary laziness for yourselves, but then again, I wouldn't want to be held responsible for you wasting your time or your money on this dreck.
The characters are the gold medal standard of cliche's. Married couple with kids have slowly lost the spark and for some reason, decide that banging other people will rekindle their romance / save their marriage. Leaving aside the sheer absurdity of this notion for the extreme vast majority of the population, but the lack of originality in the idea is delivered in the most ham fisted and expected of ways. Seriously, there are those blind fish who live in dark caves who saw every single painful element of this story coming a mile off. it's bad, its predictable and... did I mention it's bad?
If you're going to do slice of life / suburban drama, then your characters, their interconnecting drama and your plot have to do all the heavy lifting. When your characters are as bland or as unlikeable as they are here, then you're doomed to fail. Seriously, I've had flu virus' I've been more invested in the lives of than these two dime store, cardboard cut outs. And the cast of side characters are somehow even worse. It takes a special kind of sloppy writer to write dialogue, both verbal and internal this bad, but Swing has it in spades. I'm al most certain enough of my brain cells died whilst reading this to lower my I.Q by a few points.
There was one moment in this book that caught me off guard, and had me thinking 'oh dam, this is something. Let's see where this goes'. But it was completely wrapped up and resolved near to immediately after, as if it never happened. Weak. So weak.
Linda Sejic's art is fine. It's not to my taste, seeing as how an actual pencil clearly hasn't touched a physical piece of paper throughout the entire process. This digital nonsense never has and never will do it for me. And when it's drawn to such a limp and boring story, then even better art than this (like in Sunstone) would fail to draw me in.
Unless you are an absolute sucker for this kind of thing, or your standards are so low when it comes to characterisation or storytelling that you would need a search and rescue team just to raise them out of the hole they're in, then you really should avoid this with every fibre of your being. I've already sold my copy. Good riddance. 2/5

Putting the 'graphic' back in 'graphic novel.'
Married couple, Dan and Cathy, love each other very much. Dan will do anything to make his wife happy. Cathy wants to live the Swingers lifestyle. Dan isn't convinced of this and Cathy is aware of Dan's reticence and she's willing to take it slow to get him acclimated to the world.

Dan works hard to remain positive, even despite Murphy's Law - if something bad can happen, it will. He thinks at one point: "How can I say no to this woman? I love her so much. I'm upset, but I'm sure this has happened many times in the swinger lifestyle."

I'm not going to define what happened - if you're interested, you should read the book. But I do wonder ... if something 'bad' happens, even if it happens a lot due to the lifestyle, does that make it okay?

I'm not entirely sure what to make of this book.

The artwork by Yishan Li is nice. It's got a modern style to it - not perfectly realistic but stylized with sharp, angular faces. There's plenty of nudity and sexual positioning and group sex (with some homosexual scenes). If that troubles you, then you might want to pass on this (and maybe don't consider reading anything about 'swingers'). If the idea excites you, just calm down a bit. It's still tamer than anything you might see on HBO or Starz.

The story by Matt Hawkins, felt unrealistic. Maybe it's because I don't know anyone in the swinger lifestyle (at least I don't know anyone who admits to it). Something about a young couple and this didn't come up earlier in their relationship, but suddenly one is ready to jump in and experience it all while the other has to be coerced (gently, so as not to seem like he's being coerced) felt like wishful thinking. I really couldn't get behind the story and it was quite one-dimensional - girl wants to be more playful sexually, with others, boy goes along because it's what girl wants.

Mostly my reaction was - "Eh."

The book includes a 20+ pages worth of Special Previews for other graphic novels (I'm not sure what they're called) that were more traditional sorts of fantasy with elves and fairies and the like. I think I enjoyed these more than the main book because they seemed to be going somewhere with a story.

Looking for a good book? Swing, Vol. 3 by Matt Hawkins and Yishan Li is a nice-looking graphic novel with a story about a couple who 'swing' - one of them reluctantly. I'm not sure what to take from this, but if it sounds interesting to you, then check it out.

I received a digital copy directly from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

While the first two volumes of Swing were pretty much introductory type volumes, where we learn of "the lifestyle" - its rules, its pros, and its cons, this one we hit the ground running, with Dan and Cathy knowing their way around the scene.

When I finished this book, I wondered why it was not as good as the other two volumes of swing. Then I realized, a lot of the book is not really plot/story; its rules and almost like a "how to" guide. Matt Hawkins presents a lot of scenarios of what to expect and what may be unexpected, and how to respond properly and appropriately to these situations. Which is all well and good, but it starts reading a bit like an instruction manual rather than a story. Volumes 1 and 2 felt much more natural, and like a story of this married couple going through situations and navigating the strange waters they found themselves in. The educational aspect of this volume was a bit of a let down.

The good thing is, by the end of the volume, it starts reading much more naturally again, and feels more like volumes 1 and 2. And with a major situation happening () there is a lot of room for story potential, so I'm still looking forward to reading volume 4.

I’m really just finishing this series for my inner completionist’s sake. Thank god there’s only one more, they’re short, and free from the library.

The first two volumes were alright but just felt shallow. I don’t like either of the main characters. I get that it’s a series about swinging but the constant “ we could text for a 3sum” is exhausting. The crossover from Sunstone doesn’t help with me not wanting to compare the two series but it’s almost like it’s being rubbed in.

The comment at the party about “never been with a Black girl” followed with “bucket list.” Vile. From a series that’s trying to look at the lifestyle from a teaching and humanizing view maybe start with cutting fetishization of someone’s race.

The swinging lifestyle continues and the tension and emotions are running high. Love the jealousy in this. Have things gotten so bad between Cathy and Dan that they needed couple’s therapy? I liked how Cathy and Dan were trying to work it out and spend time with the kids. Loved the illustrations!

That little girl sure is bold when she asks the parents if they’d rather have sex than hang out with their children. What a mouth!

This one gets a little kinky as Cathy experiments being with women and Dan gets a threesome. Wowzer!
What happens when the condom breaks on one of the guys that Cathy’s with?

Very erotic! Love the drama! Love the emotions! Love the sex! More, more, more!

Alright... I skimmed through a lot of it, because these people think and talk a lot and they like to repeat themselves. The idea of swinging isn't really for me, but I still quite enjoyed this, though this one was a bit... Idk if it's because it got stale after two volumes, or if this one was really weirder than the previous ones. It takes care to educate people on the matter. Overall, it's fine, I'm not particularly into it, but I can't stop myself from continuing... The ending of this one was a bit wild though.

I'm not sure how I feel about this volume. I really like the relationship communication aspects of it and you really do root for Cathy and Dan. But the cliffhanger at the end has me a little apprehensive about where everything is going. Also, as someone in publishing, take it from me, Dan: What you experienced is the rarest of the rare. Most people have a better change of running into Beyonce on the street than what happened to you.

The artwork in this volume really changes and it’s just not up to the quality of the previous two. I’m also still not particular fond of any of the characters, but I still want to know what happens, with a kind of grim fascination.

Nice to see Ally from Sunstone make an appearance. Wonder what Dan would make of her other extra curricular activities. :) This volume felt more real to me and it hit a nice stride of reality mixed with exotic.

Another fine development in the Swing universe, a spin off(ish) from Sunstone, with a twist in the tale. And, by the sound of it, there's some great cross-overs coming ...
