34 books43 followersI am originally from a small town in northeast Indiana. Typical introvert kid; closer to books than people — grew up with a fascination for horror novels (Stephen King, Dean Koontz) and medieval fantasy (Piers Anthony, R.A Salvatore).
In April of 1996, I moved out on my own to Phoenix, Arizona to find my own path.
On a personal level, I have been married to my wonderful wife, Erika since October 10th, 2012. I have two stepchildren, Jenna and Johnny, and a two-year-old baby girl, Jessiena.
I have completed my first novel, Consequences Within Chaos and will be extending the story in my upcoming sequel, The Bleeding Crown. Also on Amazon & Kindle, I have In Four Days: Horror Suspense Novella.

In this, the third installment of the Evade series, Derek continues to come up with fresh and interesting situations for his well thought-out characters to get up to and into. Never a dull moment and filled with exciting edge-of-your-seat action. Each chapter provides a new and exciting adventure and has the reader sitting in wonder as to where the various plot lines could possibly end up this time. And Derek does not fail to satisfy his reader as he skillfully maneuvers characters in and out of wonderfully imagined situations. Somewhere between cyberpunk, noir, supernatural and crime thriller, Derek has virtually created his own genre, and has done so with skillful wordsmanship. He is one of the reasons I so enjoy the art of words. Fast paced, intense and ominous, this series will keep you coming back for more, and taking you in directions you could not have imagined.

But you’re going to earn them.
Detective Lindsey Korrey is still in survival mode. The Seekers are still crawling out of every shadow like they pay rent there. Rory is still the most wanted child on both Earth and whatever level of Hell handles retrieval services.
And this installment? It turns the pressure up and snaps the dial off.
Here’s What Slapped:
This is the tightest, most intense stretch of the series so far. The mythology deepens. The stakes feel heavier. The reveals actually land instead of just teasing.
Mr. Derek Barton blends noir grit, procedural tension, and supernatural dread in a way that feels intentional instead of chaotic. It’s dark. It’s foggy. It’s morally gray. It feels like you’re walking through back alleys where something is watching from the fire escape.
Ashley Ulery once again delivers. Lindsey’s exhaustion feels real. The fear stays grounded. The pacing never drags. When things escalate, you can hear the urgency in the performance. The narration keeps the tension sharp instead of theatrical.
And yes, there are twists. Some satisfying. Some unsettling. Some that make you pause the audio and go, “Oh. Oh that’s not good.”
For under two hours, it hits harder than it has any right to.
What Could’ve Been Better:
If you demand clean, perfectly tied conclusions with zero lingering threads, you might squint at the ending.
There is resolution.
There is payoff.
But there is also just enough space left open to make you wonder if the door is really closed.
Personally? I like that.
