Acompanho o trabalho de Felipe Cagno há algum tempo e meu primeiro contato com ele foi através da HQ Adágio que também foi publicada pela Avec Editora. É curioso porque The Few and the Cursed é o trabalho mais conhecido dele e acabei passando a apoiar o financiamento coletivo por causa de Adágio. Gostei tanto do roteiro que procurei ver que outras coisas ele produzia. E aí entrei em contato com The Few and the Cursed onde nós temos contato com um western pós-apocalíptico. Peguei a campanha da quarta edição em diante e fiquei ainda mais impressionado com o trabalho dele. Cheguei até a sexta edição apoiando e ainda teve os spin-offs que os apoiadores não se arrependeram de ter investido. Agora a Avec Editora traz para nós um volume encadernado com as seis primeiras edições da série (falta ainda o spin-off com outra personagem e um de crônicas que deve integrar outros encadernados). É novamente a Avec acertando nas apostas e apoiando a literatura nacional.
Neste encadernado conhecemos a figura da Ruiva, uma mulher de poucas palavras e muita ação. O mundo em que ela vive sofreu com uma seca devastadora que acabou com os rios e oceanos do mundo deixando uma quantidade pequena de água no mundo que se tornou praticamente a moeda empregada para quaisquer transações. O mundo parou no século XIX e agora as pessoas vivem aterrorizadas não só pela escassez de água, mas pelo surgimento de criaturas sinistras que corrompem o coração do homem, tornando-os seres sobrenaturais de imenso poder. Depois de se envolver em diversas situações pouco amistosas, a Ruiva descobre que corvos malignos foram avistados na cidade de Mana'Olana e que estes corvos se alimentam do sangue de crianças inocentes. Com a ajuda (não muito voluntária) de Jebediah, ela segue até o local para investigar o paradeiro delas e se depara com o lado mais obscuro do homem... e não são necessariamente os corvos que mostram isso.
O roteiro do Felipe tem bastante influências do weird western criado por Robert E. Howard. Aquele faroeste que possui o sobrenatural e como Howard era amigo de Lovecraft e eles trocavam ideias sobre histórias, a gente consegue perceber aquela aura de terror lovecraftiano por trás das criaturas que a Ruiva precisa enfrentar. Felipe é ousado na composição da narrativa ao empregar duas linhas temporais para conduzir a história: uma em que ela ainda vai encontrar pistas sobre os corvos e o paradeiro das crianças e outra onde ela já se encontra na cidade enfrentando diversos desafios. A princípio essa alternância de pontos de vista pode bagunçar a cabeça do leitor, mas isto vai se ajeitando com o passar da história. Acho que o autor deveria ter sido um pouco mais suave nessas mudanças frequentes, mas foi uma escolha criativa. O personagem da Ruiva não é tão aprofundado assim e senti que algumas características dela ficaram no ar, o que me incomodou um pouco. Nada que estrague a diversão, mas é que a personagem é tão interessante que qualquer coisa que fique no ar, deixa a gente com um pé atrás.
A arte da HQ é muito boa mesmo. Bem acima da média. E aí a gente precisa pensar um pouco sobre como os autores pensaram na HQ. Isso porque a gente claramente vê The Few and the Cursed como algo pensado não especificamente para o Brasil, mas para o mercado internacional. Consigo visualizar a HQ facilmente sendo publicada por uma Image, uma Top Cow, uma Dark Horse. O traço é maduro, os cenários são bem pensados e a colorização do Tiago Barsa está de alta qualidade. Percebam os traços finos da personagem e até a ambientação típica de western, algo que agrada demais os norte-americanos. A quadrinização está bem no padrão do comics mesmo com o emprego de 4 a 6 quadros por página, aproveitando bastante o espaço de cada quadro. Temos dois tipos de palhetas de cores empregadas: uma mais puxada para o amarelo e marrom, simbolizando a paisagem desértica pela qual a Ruiva percorre com o seu cavalo e outra mais puxada para o preto e o azul-escuro quando ela enfrenta seus adversários sobrenaturais. Algumas cenas são viscerais como quando um corvo leva uma criança embora.
Gostei das cenas de ação. Elas são muito boas e fluidas. Meu destaque vai para dois momentos em especial. Um combate ao estilo arena de lutas em que a Ruiva precisa derrotar uma série de inimigos para livrar duas pessoas da cobrança de uma taxa de proteção. Ali a gente já via que o roteiro nos apresentava uma personagem completamente bad-ass que não tem medo de jogar sujo para vencer. Aliás, quem espera uma mocinha em dúvida, vai mudando sua opinião porque a Ruiva é quase uma versão do Clint Eastwood de saias. Não tem muita paciência para bobagens, fala pouco e atira muito bem. Outra cena muito boa é uma emboscada que tem mais para a frente na história. Ali dava para ver o quanto os autores beberam de clássicos do faroeste.
Mesmo sendo focado em uma HQ de ação, gostei de como a ambientação é bem criada e desenvolvida. Considero sempre uma missão bem sucedida do roteirista quando ele consegue te mostrar como é o mundo e as engrenagens de seu funcionamento sem precisar ficar explicando muita coisa. O famoso "info dumping", como é chamado na literatura. Quando um autor precisa ficar fazendo toda uma palestra sobre o passado e o presente do mundo para então entrar na história. Muitas das coisas que coloquei aqui na resenha são deduções feitas a partir do que está presente nos quadros da história. Vez ou outra o autor dá uma pisada no freio para falar sobre algum ponto de enredo que é necessário para entender o todo. Mas é algo tão sutil e rápido que a história não perde o fôlego. Pensem que The Few and the Cursed teve cada uma das seis edições com campanhas individuais no Catarse com um certo espaçamento de tempo entre elas. Ou seja, os autores precisavam criar uma história e uma atmosfera que fizessem o leitor retornar para mais histórias. Até porque sabemos que a tendência de uma série é perder leitores com o passar do tempo. Mas, com The Few and the Cursed aconteceu o contrário.
Ainda tem muita coisa a ser explorada no universo da Ruiva. No quesito de desenvolvimento do mundo ainda há aquela clara necessidade de expandir o que foi feito, o que devemos ver em outras histórias. Há também a necessidade de desenvolver melhor a protagonista apresentando alguma coisa do seu passado e de suas habilidades. Mas, gostei demais da narrativa, da arte e do conjunto como um todo. Gostei demais de ver que a Avec pegou os direitos de uma das melhores séries de quadrinhos publicadas nos últimos anos e com isso mais pessoas terão a possibilidade de entrar em contato com este trabalho sensacional do Felipe Cagno e do Fabiano Neves. E que venham mais projetos com a Ruiva. Precisamos de mais histórias!!!

I love this series. The art by Fabiano Neves is fantastic. His vision of a post apocalyptic world devoid of water is beautiful and haunting. He also handles dynamics well during the action scenes. The colouring complements the line art perfectly.
My quibbles with the book are small. I would have liked more character development for the protagonist Red and I would have appreciated a little more world building. These are small points. The Few and the Cursed is an excellent post-apocalyptic supernatural Western and well worth checking out.

First, I was predisposed to like this because I'm a sucker for supernatural westerns. Unfortunately, the story just isn't there. There is a basic story about ridding the town of the killer crows and it even has a decent twist to it. However, there are references to things that is a part of Red's world that are never really fleshed out, namely exactly what she can and can't do.
And, while Red has some absolutely fantastic art, its her character that, to me, was the real letdown of the story. You never really find any kind of attachment to her - she goes around and does things but you never really understand anything about her or what motivates her outside of basic survival.
It's an average comic with exceptional art that keeps it from being forgettable.

An interesting story featuring great art, The Crows of Mana'Olana lacks the narrative punch required to be highly memorable. The ‘weird western’ setting within a devastated world lacking water offered much promise, however, I felt that this intriguing situation was not fully explored, leaving me with unanswered questions relating to survival in such a troubled landscape/society. The book’s presentation is excellent, and the included extras offer insight into the creative process, but the main story skips details at times, reducing my connection to, and understanding of, events seen and unseen in its attractive pages.

Great western-cursed saga, featuring the stunning don't-f*ck-with-me Red.
A great start of an epic series, all thanks to the awesome Kickstarter community of readers and backers (disclaimer: I'm a proud member).
This first arc is all about the elusive crows and all the trouble that Red goes through to put them down. But beware... not everything is as it seems.
The art is great in this first volume, and the narrative will keep you wondering most of the time.
And the pace is, well, fast and furious ;)
Highly recommended reading, if you're are into post-apocalyptic westerns full of cursed beasts.

The art was fantastic and the concept was smart and interesting, but the story didn’t flow well between flashbacks and silent sections. The intermittent pages of no dialogue made it feel like the sound randomly dropped out of a movie, and that would often pull me out of the story wondering if I maybe had a bad copy missing speech bubbles and sound effects. I’ll definitely keep reading the released content, but this was a disappointing start.

This post-apocalyptic supernatural western features more of the supernatural and western elements than post-apocalyptic, but that’s about the only slight I found in reading this first volume. Red is a badass bounty hunter who sees plenty of action in this adventure. The concept is cool, the writing is tight, and the art is captivating. Very nice bonus material included in the collection as well.

Fun adventure set in an epic paranormal Wild West type of setting! The art is also absolutely incredible.
