there were lots of awesome eye openers in it for me as a musician and as a music teacher. benny shows us simple but effective ways to raise your Efficiency in practicing.
if I had to break it down it would be: Structure and motivation! this is what I got most out of this book.
I highly recommend this book to every musician out there (or even if you are not a musician, you can apply his methods and recommendations on different areas f. ex. sports, art, etc.)
As somebody who has tought improvement issues for the past 10 years, it's a bit tricky for me to read self help. Usually the content is close enough that this feels like repetition to me. Although I still could see some concepts, this one was nicely written and had some stuff in there that really helps to translate to fuzzy stuff like playing an instrument.
Excellent guidebook to improving practice as a musician. Nothing particularly groundbreaking, but Greb puts forward his own well tested system, which he's used effectively with many students.
I like what he says about how to practice more effectively, and he says it in a clear and compelling way. So to that extent I think the book is quite good. The fault is mine for having unrealistic expectations going in — thinking the book would reveal some kind of easy path to improve as a musician that did not involve regular hard work over an extended period of time. There probably is no such path. If I ever get up a serious commitment to improve my musicianship (which is seeming kind of doubtful), I think this book represents an excellent blueprint to follow to guide my efforts.
3.4 overall. Book is great but is mainly using concepts from things like Deep Work and other productivity books as applied to an instrument. More than supreme knowledge from the book, the biggest challenge for the reader is to be consistent with any producitivity tip (we can all do it for week but these tips work when are done for years or months).
Molto utile per chi vuol acquisire un metodo strutturato per lo studio di qualsiasi strumento. Contiene consigli e sintesi di considerazioni sulle dinamiche di apprendimento applicabili anche ad ambiti come quello sportivo e professionale.
"What you are capable of is often described as your ability. Motivation determines what you do, and discipline determines whether you do what's necessary. But that's not the whole story, because it is attitude that determines how well you do what you do."
A step-by-step guide to plan and execute your daily musical studies. As systematic and detailed as you would imagine a German system to be. It’s all in here—loved every page.
