This is an interesting and engaging read and author's writing style is good enough for me to say this book has so much potential if only I'm agreeable with how some parts of the plot turn out.
I understand the hero's position initially in which he couldn't just act on a whim or the way things he wants them, when it comes to his feelings for the heroine.. considering certain circumstances that he has to abide to.. but regardless, I just don't like my heroines doing the first moves, chasing after heroes and heroes pushing them away.. I'm that sort of reader when it comes to the romance genre.. I like my heroes doing everything to be with the heroines.. their love winning over any scruples despite any predicament.. in here I do understand that the hero couldn't just do so at first.. but heroine keeps making the moves despite him telling her no, gets her resolve to not live without him.. and too fast for my liking.. they don't even know each other much.. and if ever, I like them to get together because hero couldn't help himself despite.. not always stopping himself, pushing away and being resolved up to the final chapters.. it takes the romance off for me.. so frustrating.. but I guess this part needs to happen, necessary to keep the plot more interesting and for heroine to show her strength and stand her ground when faced by resistance and a broken heart.
Having this issue, yes I admire my heroines to be brave, gutsy and know what they want.. and having the will to act upon them.. except making first moves on men and persist when it comes to unwilling heroes.. I'm still old fashioned like that.
As I understand the setting is during the medieval times?.. even in fiction, first time I've read a woman laird in the many historical highlander series I've read.. I could understand a lady owning lands, a leader of her clan in some ways, but still a lady.. but a true leader of a clan?.. a leader of warriors in a battlefield?.. Nah.. sorry.. I'm not this open minded yet.. a woman laird in the medieval times.. hmm.
Overall, a good book.. but yeah, I might be in the minority here but I didn't like a heroine who is so forward with a man despite me liking a strong brave heroine especially one who was raised as a lady during those olden times.. and a hero who's stubborn and foolish enough who needs to be really prodded and convinced to be able to realize and claim a heroine.
I might like a strong willful heroine but within some boundaries.. I'd still want a true lady in the sense that, within her she accepts she's still a strong woman with her inner strength but not challenging or usurping a man's role.. sorry I'm not that modern and liberal yet to think men and women are equal in all sense.. as a woman, I still know what a woman can and cannot do despite us having military and police wives nowadays.. this is my take.. I'm not questioning or challenging other beliefs.. I'd still want a man I could respect and not let me control him or always catering to my whims because he's frightened he'd incur my anger and vice versa.. that's not a partnership.
In romance books I want a hero who's strong inside and outside.. who's firm and knows his love for his woman not getting swayed by anything.. to woo his heroine and show his devotion, not push her away in every turn or having his resolve not to be with her despite loving her.. a fool for a hero this one.. and a true independent smart woman for me is knowing her strengths and weaknesses and learning to embrace them.. not being stubbornly reckless and believing she can be a man and a woman too.. but in the end this woman kind of redeems herself a bit to me with her decision.. but still I'm kind of dissatisfied how they came to be together.
And the sudden change of hearts in the final pages?.. despite stubbornly being resolved on decisions and paths to take one or two pages before on both sides.. I strongly dislike inconsistency in books even in fiction.. so I both dislike the main characters.. I was starting to respect heroine, when she finally accepts hero's regard for her, finds her pride and self respect then.. grrr.. so annoying.
So I could say maybe I've read the wrong book despite it being good.. still I'm interested to check out more of author's works.. but I'm kind of wary.. this might be her plot patterns having in mind what I've read.. with regard to what some of the supporting male characters say, how they were at first with their wives.. I hope not.

Loved the characters and it’s always great to read of strong women! One of the best about this author is her choice of a female protagonist and allows for the real strength that women possess to shine through.
Love historical romance were the women are strong and stand there ground no matter how defeated they feel. Loved the characters, a reluctant hero feeling himself undeserving of being loved.
Garia ran from her betrothed. Trever was sent to track her. She was saved by him and he by her. She was to be Laird but she gave it up. If you like medieval romance Ann Marie Scott is the author to find.
