Axes and Angels

Rate this book
Mythical creatures are real, and the world is just finding out.

A dangerous job, a pair of pint-sized familiars on her shoulders, a crush on a constellation ... No wonder Theo Apollonia’s relationship status just says, “It’s complicated.”

Snarky thief Theo Apollonia has life figured out: steal priceless artifacts—pay off her debts.

But when she and her familiars, Simon and Garfunkel, take on their most dangerous heist yet, they find themselves on the wrong side of a powerful crime boss …

A job for a banished demigod goes sideways...

Now Theo must take on powerful mythical guardians, warring gangs and an underground arena where constellations and mythical creatures battle to the death.

First rule of mythical Fight Club: everyone dies.

More is at stake than just the lives of her and her friends or even enslaved mythological beings.

If not stopped, the world will wake to a dark new day … and an even darker new god.

Theo has a decision to make: Run to protect herself and those she loves, or fight in the slim hope that she has what it takes to stop the apocalypse.

From the twisted minds of Ramy Vance and Matthew Herrmann comes a new epic urban fantasy adventure unlike anything seen before.

If you like the Dresden Files, Mercy Thompson or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, then you’ll be helplessly addicted to the Mortality Bites series.

When he's not writing UF, Matthew is often researching and wrangling mythical creatures to showcase in his next story. When he's not doing that, he's probably trying not to kill himself on his mountain bike outside. He also bakes a mean biscotti.

Axes and Angels
(Better Demons #1)
by Matthew Herrmann, Ramy Vance
Wow, I really liked this book! This is a world where all the gods and goddess have just up and left! Now instead of the curse of 'G#d damn' it's 'GodsGone damn'! Our gal of the story, Theo, is a thief for hire, so not a great role model. Her partner is Orion, as in the once constellation! Her ex-partner is in the story and she is a bit on the crazy side. Her name is Lucy and she has four arms and was a body guard for an Indian god at one point. The best characters, in my opinion, is There's familiars. They are 5" high men she named Simon and Garfunkel. They ride on her shoulders and are invisible to all but her.
There is so much that happens in this book! It's fast paced and loads of fun and suspense. Quirky banter and unpredictable situations are the norm!
They get in the middle of two gangs.
Her best friend is gorgeous from the waist up, the rest is all spider!
She is kidnapped a few times.
Declared to be the Prophecy girl.
Beer parties with ghosts! And more! Truly a good story!
There was one section near the end of the book that seemed out of place with the rest of the book and that's why I didn't give it 5 stars. Recommended highly if you love creatures, Greek mythology, and snarky fun!

For a change, we have a GoneGod World heroine who isn't a barely-adult, or just pretending to be a barely-adult. This is nice. I like books about adults. Unfortunately, the dark humor that I've come to expect simply wasn't here. This was a long, long slog. Just one really bad day after another. Yes, the Simon and Garfunkel was a nice touch. Beyond that, just a big pile of betrayals and deceptions. Not my favorite.

Gone Gods world gets better and better

Fantastic Gone Gods book. Theo is a wonderfully written character. She is human but embraces the Gone Gods world. She has two very tiny familiars, that happen to be invisible to everyone but her, Simon and Garfunkle are hilarious. I absolutely love the Gone Gods books. Action packed, hilarious, very fun dynamic of humans and previously thought to be mythical creatures that are now living among humans. Arachne is one of my favorite characters in this book. Lots of twists and turns. I don't want to spoil anything, I'll just say definitely worth reading. Ready to read the next book in this series.

This was the first book I’ve read in the Gods Gone universe and wow! This really is different. There are people in the story who used to be constellations, creatures from mythology, ghosts and a bunch of ‘Others’. The story is very busy and moves quickly. The protagonist is a thief who steals artifacts (her father is an archeologist, so she has some background there). At times the story moves too quickly from one bad situation to another but on the whole is a really good read. Theo (the protagonist) is snarky but her character is well developed as the story moves on. I’m giving this 5 stars for the different universe and the characters. I’ve bought the second book.

Another fantastic book

Kind of confusing in the beginning, but it all soon came together. Very enjoyable story, fast paced, delightful characters, familiar GoneGod world setting.

Story not bad …

… but the ebook requires some substantial additional proofreading. Apostrophes, commas, homonyms, syntax, a plot hole or three - not great.

aces and angels

I like the first three books, admittedly there were a few times I skimmed over stuff that I felt dragged I on a bit. I would have liked to know a little more of the background between her and her parents instead of the little Tid bits here or there, but I liked it enough to need to see where the story will now go…
