When the Underworld burned, I thought that was the end. Turns out it was only the beginning.
Lucifer’s death was a shot heard around the world. The sudden loss of magic turned the tides for the first time in over two decades.
The humans are rallying. Rioting. It feels like the stirrings of war.
As if that wasn’t enough, Bree isn’t the sister I remember—and her desire to return to Hell is creating more fires than I know how to put out.
Things are changing. Lines are drawn. Everyone must choose a side.
Even me.
Sometimes the world needs a hero. In a city that’s already gone to hell in a hand basket, it might just need a demon.
If you can’t get enough of books by Ella Summers, Annette Marie, Shannon Mayer, Deborah Wilde, K.F. Breene, Jeaniene Frost, Kelly St. Clare, and Linsey Hall then dive right in to the dangerous depths of New Chicago. Beware of headstrong heroines with snark. These ladies don’t bark. They bite.
Kel Carpenter is a master of werdz. When she’s not reading or writing, she’s traveling the world, lovingly pestering her co-author, and spending time with her family. She is always on the search for good tacos and the best pizza. She resides in Maryland and desperately tries to avoid the traffic.

Big thank you to everyone that had supported this series this far! You guys are making my dream a reality 💕✨
While this isn’t the last book, for those wondering—there will be more couples/series in this world after I finish out Piper and Ronan’s story. Thank you!
I wish I liked this book more. The story was very interesting and the characters are bad*ss. There was such a somber note to everything that I ended up just pushing myself through the story. By the end, my heart wasn't in it at all.
I still like Piper. She's an *sshole who knows she's an *sshole. Though she respects her friends she's not afraid of telling it how it is. My dislike of her always pushing Ronan away is still very much present. She recognizes that she's happy with him around but still fights being with him. Though it does get better as the novel progresses.
Ronan isn't my favorite. The lying by omission thing he loves to do has taken its toll on me. The story would have been much more straightforward if he was just consistently honest with Piper like she's asked him to be on multiple occasions at this point.
Is it me or is Bree a much more interesting character to read about than Ronan? There were various times throughout this story that I caught myself thinking how much more interesting this would all be if it were coming from Bree's POV. She's a bad*ss in her own right and I respect that. I want her to get a chance at a happily ever after! She deserves as much for going through what she's gone through.
The ending left such a bitter taste in my mouth. The cliffhanger ending didn't do much to wash down the bitterness that that plot twist had incurred. Overall I'm just bitter about this whole novel thanks to that plot twist and the cliffhanger ending.
The Audio Book:
The narration was fine. Adam Gold did an okay job. Though be warned that I usually dislike male narrators. His female voices can be improved upon. It wasn't my favorite. Savannah Gilmore would have been great had she not over-pronounced 'T''s in words that you usually wouldn't hear throughout the narration. That's more of a pet peeve of mine. So do with that what you will.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
The next story of course dives deeper into Bree and darn it these cliffhangers! But loving it!!! Not too much into spice for this book, it’s there but spice lite but Ronan shows his love. Power is growing…..
I am really enjoying this series. This girl is not perfect, but she knows who she is and is unapologetically herself. She recognizes her flaws and is working on them. Sometimes. Kind of. Maybe.
At the heart of the story is Piper & Rowan grappling with the aftermath of Lucifer's death and the sudden loss of magic that has thrown the world into turmoil. As humans rally and tensions rise, alliances are tested and lines are drawn in the sand. Amidst the chaos, the protagonist must confront their own demons and make choices that will shape the fate of the world.
Carpenter's prose crackles with energy, drawing readers into a world where danger lurks around every corner and nothing is as it seems. From the gritty streets of the city to the fiery depths of Hell itself, the author paints a vivid picture of a world on the brink of collapse, where heroes and demons alike must fight for survival.
What sets Blood Be Damned apart is its exploration of themes such as redemption, sacrifice, and the nature of power. As the protagonist grapples with their own inner demons and struggles to find their place in a world gone mad, they are forced to confront the darkness within themselves and make choices that will define their destiny.
This is a novel that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end, with its gripping plot twists, dynamic characters, and relentless pacing. With its blend of magic, mayhem, and moral ambiguity, Blood Be Damned is a must-read for fans of urban fantasy and supernatural thrillers alike.
Where do I start with this book?! I waited for what felt like ages - even though it obviously wasn't. It was only a few months, because Kel is fast like that. lol 🤣
After I inhaled the 1st two installments in this series (#TouchedByFire & #HauntedByShadows ) each super fast, my expectations for #BloodBeDamned were HIGH and you know what? It didn't disappoint!!❤️❤️❤️
Going back into this world was super easy. It felt like I didn't even leave in the first place. There was no confusion, because let's be honest, how should anyone be able to forget the cliffhanger of book 2?! I for sure didn't. I immediately knew what was going on and these characters welcomed me again with open arms in their world!🥰
Piper's sarcasm and sass and no BS-behaviour, Nat's wit, Ronan's possessiveness and alphahole-ness.😂 And all these wonderful dialogues that feel like watching a tennis match! It was all there and I loved every second. We meet some characters that I didn't expect to meet (again). We have some shocking revelations, behaviour that I didn't expect and that made me a little sad. We have character development!!!! And ohhh I lived for these developments. Not only when it comes to the relationship side (even though is was there and it was great and it was hoottt! 😏🔥🔥🔥) but also when it comes to the different characters' personalities. And of course Piper and Ronan made the biggest individual improvements - I actually loved the direction Piper took so so much - but also there were some characters I didn't necessarily expect any change or development from.
And then - plotwise - of course Kel had something up her sleeve that left my jaw hanging open and left me completely dumbstruck. One thing in particular took me a few moments to process when I read it on the page. 😳😳😳 But at least I wasn't the only one, because Piper didn't believe this to be possible at first either.😝 And then the ending!! I think it is safe to say that there is a cliffhanger in this one. If you expected anything else I can't help you.😂 And while the cliffhanger in book 3 wasn't as big as the one in book 2, it left me speechless! Because honestly? I am CONFUSED!!! What was going on there?? Why did she stare at him in horror?? I thought they were... "on good terms"? (Me, being extra careful about my wording, because I don't want to give anything away.🤣) But yes. I. Need. Answers!!!🥺
It's pretty clear that this was another #5starread , right?😉
Wow, so much happens in this book. This book has the most emotional moments, after getting to the end I understand why. That doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of action packed moments, and there are definitely plenty of steamy moments too. But this book revolved more around the emotional, the relationships, friendships and the work that goes into the ups and downs of those. Lots of self reflection, realization, growth and improvement all along the way. I think this was my favorite book in the series so far, mostly because I feel like there was a lot to resolve looking back on all that happened in the last couple books. So I’m thankful that Kel Carpenter was able to touch upon all those things, moments, that I felt needed more emotional closure on. Again, I definitely recommend this series and I absolutely look forward to the next book!
Can we *please* stop putting pregnancies in smut series? Especially surprise ones that are being kept secret from the one who is pregnant. This was a good series but this plot twist or whatever you want to call it turned me off completely, I don’t think either Piper or Ronan are set to make good parents with how they currently treat each other/ the amount of fighting they do. It felt like this took over the entire end of the book and to be completely honest I will not be finishing the series because I don’t want to sit through Piper pregnancy and have everything centered around a baby. I stayed this long because Piper is a bad @ss and I wanted to see her overcome her issues regarding her biases and also her family trauma, throwing a baby into it feels pointless.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Way to drop a boom at the end of the book Kel. Not going to lie, this one will leave you with a total cliffhanger and I have already had to look at the next book release date and it can't get here fast enough. With Bree back and not happy to be there it has Piper in a rut that everyone is trying to pull her out off. Piper take on New Chicago in a whole new way with it on the brink of a civil war. Piper learns alot more of her powers and how to use them while trying to reconnect with Bree but will it be enough to keep her. Piper and Ronan's relationship hits a whole new level. (You'll know when you read it) Even if your not a speed reader you'll fly through it just so you can learn more.
Now that Piper was able to bring Bree back, she's in for a surprise because Bree is not happy with her at all. She wants to go back to hell because her atman is there. Piper can't deal with this, with losing her sister once again, so they make a deal: Piper will send Bree back after a month if Bree is willing to spend a few hours every day with Piper. The two demons accept, and so start this new journey in rekindle their relationship. However, things aren't easy. Bree is still keeping secrets, and I can't wait for the next book to be released to find out what these secrets are. The cliffhanger was quite bad for me because I was so engrossed into the story.
Still loving this story! I’m 75% through the series and still excited for more. Usually, 75% is where I start to get bored and need a change (even with my favorite series), but with this one I didn’t even consider a break - just started the 4th book. I think it’s because the books are relatively short (compared to some SJM books, for example), which is great! The length of these books seems perfect.
This was so so good! I love Piper and Ronan. The supporting characters are amazing as well. Nat is my fav, and I am anxious to find out more about the Lorcan/Bree situation. The next book can’t get here fast enough. I love these characters and the world Kel has created!! Highly recommend!!
Kel freaking Carpenter!! Just punch me in the gut with those surprises!!! Lots of love and hate going on in this book. Life made me take my time with this book, and man oh man did I savor it! And it was f*cking delicious! This series keeps getting better and better. More twists and crazy keeps falling into place. Piper is becoming more bada$$, dealing with everything and growing along with it. Amazing!
Just really good Urban Fantasy. I love flawed characters, and Piper drifnitely has her flaws. Couple that with good world building, loveable secondary characters and a chemistry filled romance with a morally grey demon and you are on to a winner, as far as I'm concerned!
I enjoyed this book a lot. Piper/Ronan = OTP Their relationship develops a lot in this novel and it was great to read along. We also get to meet more tough, empathetic female characters. These are usually sorely lacking in romance novels.
The cliffhanger is real! I can't wait for the next book. I hope to see the conclusion of the sister sister storyline.
After reading a string of moderately good reads it is so refreshing to be back in New Chicago the wondrous world Kel Carpenter has created. This woman wastes no time in throwing us into the action without preamble. She also always leaves us wanting; no, jonesing for more at the end. I’m like a junkie who needs their next fix.
This time rage and guilt is tormenting Piper at every turn. The problem is she will never be successful in moving forward until she addresses both. She is wallowing in self pity over her strained relationship with her sister Bree; yet unwilling to try and do anything about it until Ronan and Bree both confront her.
As Piper maneuvers through her guilt, she and Ronan find a workable peace. She takes on new accolades with the succubus twins and soon she and Bree strike a deal to heal some of their riff. There is so much going on in this little gem that I struggled with savoring every word or gobbling it down in one sitting. It wasn’t an easy decision let me tell you!
In the end I don’t have words to express how much I love this series. It’s raw, full of fallacies yet hope as well. It can even teach us a few things about ourselves. If you haven’t discovered Kel Carpenter definitely put New Chicago on your to read list. You won’t regret it!
I think I’m well & truly over this genre or maybe just this series - knew it wasn’t going well by page 16, pushed myself but by page 54 I was done. The FMC (Piper) hasn’t evolved in the slightest & I can’t do her whiney, tortured bullshit for another page. I will try again in about a week but it doesn’t look good 🤷🏻♀️
Geezus what I’d give for paranormal/fantasy story that had characters that didn’t act/talk like pubescent teens that watched too many 1940’s gangster movies 🤦🏻♀️
Well finally finished - only took 3weeks - but I stick to what I said above - thank fuck this was less than 300 pages as I struggled to get through this instalment! The only upside was it got a little interesting in the final pages - but not enough for me to want to read the next book - especially with Piper being pregnant...urghhhhhh!
I thought the 3rd installment of the Demons of New Chicago series was as little slower for me than books 1 and 2. I wasn't sucked in the entire time and could stop it and restart it a little later (books 1 and 2 was really hard for me to put them down, I would have listened to them straight through). Not saying I didnt like book 3, it is a solid 4 stars, I just wasn't as locked in as much. I thought it really picked up once Bree started, bregrundingly, training with Piper. I was always suspicious of her and you could see glimpses of herself but she kept it under this horrible persona. Like, I get being ripped from Hell where you had to fight to stay alive after being unceremoniously thrust there, buuuuut your sister did try and rescue you and you show no gratitude whatsoever. It was sad to see some decisions Bree did be thrown back at her, and the growing tension between the supes and humans I thought was done well. I was shocked about a character from a previous book showing up the way he did and Piper's reaction was priceless. I really like Nat and hoping to see her have a bigger role maybe in the future? The additional people being added to the side character group, esp those with or associated with people with blood connections was a good addition, despite getting a little confused with some of them haha. I did like how Piper had to come to gripes with pretty much being royalty in the supe community, she was trying to deny it and ignore it all she wants but it won't go away 🤣.
I thought again the narration was stellar. I did listen to this faster (1.3-1.4 times faster) because Savannah does tend to be slower than I'd like, but at the faster speed, it was amazing and I don't honestly have any constructive feedback. I thought Adam and Savannah had the emotions down pat, great inflections, made me believe the characters and the walls that were FINALLY coming down hahaha. So much love growing (I choked up with the talk of a possible future family! The narrators really made me root for them in that scene ❤️). Oh and the crushing heartbreak regarding Bree....beautiful and again heart wrenching 😭😭😭. 5/5 easily for the narration/performance!
I cannot wait until book 4 is out next year, I had a suspicion not all was what it seemed so that wasn't a shocker, but I didnt see that twist at the very end haha. Great job, Kel, I am going to be so sad to see this end in book 4 or maybe book 5??
Be prepared to see a whole other side of the characters we have come to know and love! And Kel, please... we need book 4 asap!!! :D
Worldbuilding: We meet up with Piper and Ronan a little while after the ending of the second book. After the end of the second book, Piper has hit rock bottom :( Drowning in guilt but numbing herself to it to the point Ronan steps in (again). Normally when I read a new instalment in a series, I read the last chapter of the previous book to refresh my memory. I didn't do that with this one so at the start I had to think back on what happened that could have caused such a reaction, but fortunately, the author gave us a quick recap not long after :) Storylines and conversations all made perfect sense and scenes and environments were clear and well detailed.
Character development: Piper and Ronan have changed. Hell, everyone and even the city of New Chicago has changed. It's up to them to pick up the pieces and pull them back together. I felt that this instalment really brought to light how much they all have changed and how they are handling those changes. If you weren't already emotionally invested, you will be after reading this one. As always, all the characters feel so real and are very well written.
Pacing & flow: This book had slower pacing compared to the previous two books. This wasn't a bad thing at all, but more as if the stage was set for the grand finale in the next book. The story though held my attention from start to finish (hence I read it in one go :D).
The book: The book itself was well written with no (noticeable) errors. There is sex described (if that is important to you). It is 398 pages long, spread over 37 chapters and told mostly from Piper's point of view.
Final thoughts: I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and I have to say another great instalment! A very easy and enjoyable read. Just when you think things are going to get easier for Piper, Ronan and the rest... this happens. And nope, not gonna tell you what, but I will tell you this: I really want to read the last book :D
Following on a month after the events in book two, there is something about this series I absolutely love.......
Whether it is Ronan, the dark, delectable, sexy, powerful, dominant alphahole chaos demon, harvester of souls (and my heart). He is relentless in his pursuit and protection of Piper. Seriously girl, why have you run from him so much? That demon is hot and you know what that hard body can do!! 🔥🔥
Maybe it is Piper, full of anger, formerly human, now a fully fledged rage demon. She's kept her emotions locked up, spending years trying to get her sister Bree back. She's snarky, quick to anger but there is a mix of guilt, strength and goodness to her that gives her an edge in understanding supernaturals and humans alike. I really like her, she's flawed and knows it but never gives up on the things that matter.
Maybe it's Nat, I love this kind, caring, sympathetic witch who isn't afraid to tell Piper or Ronan for that matter the truth. She's feisty and adds some good humour to break up the tension.
Maybe it's all these things and more. It's a dark, magical, brutal world where humans are at a distinct disadvantage, but they may have found a champion, one who can unite the city of New Chicago.
The two narrators of the audio book are very good too, perfect for Piper and Ronan. They bring the characters to life, especially the deep sexy voice of Ronan (more chapters please!!!)
With some unexpected twists, steamy hotness, tension, action, betrayals, secrets and some powerfully emotional moments, Blood Damned has moved the story on wonderfully. Its answered a few questions but has generated even more! Just what is going on with Bree? The story kept me glued to my headphones and after that ending I can't wait for what comes next!
The story continues with Piper, Nat, and Ronan. I love them all. We get a lot of things going on, we finally get some revelations and there were twists and turns, and the steam went up, the emotional side got me in this one. Needless to say, I was left hanging again, and now more confused with everything, I really need the next one asap!
So I read book 1 and 2 of this some time last year and was really pulled into the story so I'm looking forward to this one.
This starts with Piper in a bar, getting into a fight with an Alpha when her Demon lover, Ronan, makes an appearance and tries to talk some sense into her. She's on a downward spiral after rescuing her sister, Bree, only for her to want to go back to Hell. There's also a lot of unrest in the city after the death of Lucifer with humans trying to get rid of Supes, Supes taking out humans and demons on the brink of coming out of Hell. Piper needs to figure out how to fix things before her city really goes out of control.
Yeah, I'd forgotten quite a lot of what went down in the previous books other than Piper and Ronan and that he was a demon that had been summoned in the first book and that they ended up with some sort of connection.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed being back in New Chicago with them. Their romantic entanglement finally sorts itself out in this one but not before some ups and downs and errors from both of them.
As for the rest of the gang? I honestly didn't remember much about them but I did like the dynamics between them. They didn't always get along but they all protected those they classed as friends and it was nice to read about.
I thought this was going to be the last book for some reason but that ending has me intrigued about what's going to happen next with this group of people and I'm looking forward to reading more.
Still loving this series but godsdamn if Ronan isn’t just a little bit of an ick. Like he is constantly in Piper’s face (and head) when she clearly needs to vent and have space. And the lying to her by omission. Like do these people even really know each other and like each other outside of their soul bond?
I do like their tender moments and even though it’s a little annoying, Ronan’s devotion to Piper is admirable. You can tell he wants this relationship to work and is working for it but I wish he would have let Piper come to it on her own more instead of forcing it.
Bree is certainly a force to be reckoned with and I almost wish we’d gotten her story instead of Piper’s. I absolutely love her and I think she embodies rage and fury better than her sister does. I wish she had been the chosen one in all honesty. I love Piper and her tenacity, but sometimes she just seems wish washy and relies on circumstance to force her hand rather than taking charge.
Did not like the pregnancy, but I’m not a fan of pregnancies in books. I’ve read the last book already and found it annoying and unrealistic but it did add to the story instead of just being a minor inconvenience like it is in most books.
