Forrester Research has predicted that in 2016, $77 billion will be spent on interactive marketing. This equals the amount that is spent on television advertising today, so it is increasingly important to know how to effectively use digital marketing.
Understanding Digital Marketing looks at the world of digital marketing: how it got started, how it got to where it is today and where the thought leaders in the industry believe it is headed in the future. This new edition demonstrates in a practical and comprehensive way, how to harness the power of digital media and use it to achieve the utmost success in business.
The author deals with key topics in detail, including: search marketing, social media, mobile marketing, affiliate marketing, e-mail marketing, customer engagement and digital marketing strategies.
This book will help readers to: - choose online marketing channels to get their products and services to market - understand the origins of digital marketing and the trends that are shaping its future - achieve the competitive edge to keep them ahead
Including new case studies that reflect the changed marketplace, Understanding Digital Marketing provides readers with the tools to utilize the power of the internet to take their businesses wherever they want them to go.
This is a hefty book that can never be truly up-to-date. No book can be. The world of digital marketing is changing and being developed at a seemingly breakneck speed and the author, aided by many contributors who work within the industry, attempt to provide the reader with a great helicopter view of what has happened, what is happening and what might happen.
Thirteen chapters take you on a fairly deep, involved tour of the digital marketing world, touching on matters such as mobile marketing, consumer engagement, social media, affiliate marketing and strategy formulation. A crystal ball has also been taken into play to provide ten predictions as to what the future might offer.
In some ways this book feels disjointed and lacking a common voice. It might take a bit of time to get along with if you consider it as an item you read sequentially. After a period of reflection it feels that you probably will get more out of it by dipping in and out as required, consulting a chapter at a time.
Fortunately this book is very competitively-priced, adding to the general feeling that you only need to find a few nuggets of great information to get your money's worth. Sure, you could spend a lot of time online and get a lot of this stuff for free, but here is a great, curated collection of thoughts, ideas, concepts, strategies and information. A great, very detailed index at the end really lets you dive in, elevating this from just a how-to guide to a possible indispensable reference. A similarly comprehensive glossary can be a Godsend when you are suffering from jargon overload.
For those who are closely involved in the industry this book won't be necessarily teaching you new things, even though you may benefit from much of the information. For a more generalist or newcomer to the industry it can be a very credible, powerful teacher. Annoyances certainly exist but they do tend to pale into insignificance when you look at the bigger picture. It is a book that you might warm to. You will either love it or just be neutral towards it, predominantly on style grounds and its "look and feel". The potential end results can justify any perceived extra effort.
Understanding Digital Marketing (3rd edition), by Damian Ryan and published by Kogan Page. ISBN 9780749471026, 432 pages. YYYY.
This 3rd edition offers an update to the original and remains a good general introduction to the topic, probably suitable as one among many texts for an introductory advertising/PR course. It also functions as a fairly good reference text, given the comprehensive index. Newcomers to the topic will find it educational. I’m not a newcomer and found it tedious and repetitive.
On a more personal level: after reading this book, I put a sign on my desk that reads “NEVER read Introductions to Non-fiction!” Like the introduction to this book, they invariably read like an extended Executive Summary which should have been cut even to fulfill its purpose of making it unnecessary for the busy executive to actually read an entire report.
For a general audience or college audience, a good introduction should NOT discuss the book’s general structure or the contents of each section or chapter – a good Table of Contents will take care of that without insulting the reader – and it should NOT describe the book’s conclusion(s). The Introduction should, instead, (1) briefly state the book’s subject, purpose, and why it is important, (2) briefly state how it came to be – who/what inspired it, and (3) briefly thank important contributors; and these things all together should make the reader want to read the book to discover what it holds.

Four hundred-page book designed to cover all aspects of online or digital marketing. To be honest, all previous books (except for Marketing 4.0) on marketing/business in online space did not make any impression on me. Therefore, it is not clear what I actually expected. In general, this book did not impress me. The size is yes, but the content is definitely not. Firstly, it is not clear for whom this book is intended. The information is so basic that it can only interest those who have just discovered the Internet, who do not know "what" and "how Taking into account that the book is oriented - in the widest meaning - at those who are engaged or going to be engaged in business in the Internet, how it is possible not to understand that such people could not live all this time on a desert island or in some cave or in any other place where there is no Internet. That is, even if a person was not engaged in business online, he still knows a lot of things only from the fact that he explores the Internet space, interacts with various sites (entertainment, educational, news, etc.). The author presents the information as if it were a child who has just gone to school. Secondly, there is a lot of water. The author begins with the most ancient times with a view to explain that advertising existed in ancient Rome (or Ancient Greece). And then through the centuries in our days and the Internet. This is definitely unnecessary information, which only knocks off the intended purposes. And this theme, absolutely inappropriate. Thirdly, because the author decided to cover everything at all, it turned out that the book is too banal and too technical at the same time. For example, the author writes about host, how to choose them and so on. Why would a person who is not a programmer want to do that? Well, I can assume that somebody cares about the technical side of the question and how to choose a host is important to them. But definitely not for everyone. And here I come back to what I wrote above. The author, having included all sorts of topics in the book in order to write a book for all categories of people, actually wrote the book for nobody. Because if a person needs technical questions to create a site, he will turn to specialized literature, which examines this particular issue in more detail and which is not distracted by other topics. The same book offers a wide range of topics, but describes them rather superficially, so the book can be replaced by a simple specialized article from the Internet. I am not talking about the fact that the themes such as: the site should be clear and precise, easy to use, not overloaded with details and with a good design - repeated in almost every relevant book. There is even no need for books or articles, there is enough common sense. Therefore, common sense + benchmarking in the aggregate can replace 80% of such literature on digital marketing, and maybe even all 98%
The irony of reading a book about digital marketing wasn’t lost on me, even if it was an ebook borrowed from Netgalley.com for the low cost of an honest review although my review might be more of a honest, but bemused review. This was well-written, certainly easy-to-follow, and I found myself wondering if some of this would actually work for everyone or just certain people. I think I had more questions than answers at the finish, but so much about digital marketing feels that way because despite case examples it all seems so far away. Maybe it’s like so many things, the logic and strategy is there, on the page, but implementing it, actually doing it, hands-on seems completely different. I’d definitely recommend it, but read as many as possible to get different ideas and then go out there and try it on.
I read this book as a further addendum to a digital marketing course I took, so really I read it as a course text book but I found it to be really engaging with good information, although with any book about the internet, some of the examples in the version that I read were a bit dated. Since the subject is constantly evolving, a book will never be as dynamic and up to date as the subject upon which it is written i.e. Digital Marketing; never the less this book is a great foundation for the subject itself. I particularly liked the case studies in each chapter and and the way the authors presented the information.
I highly recommend Understanding Digital Marketing.
Regardless of the size of a business, it will probably need to consider digital marketing at some point. If you are part of a small business, or especially a business of one, you probably will have to do this yourself. Understanding Digital Marketing gives you a great start in planning and executing a marketing plan.
It covers a wide range of topics that you will encounter, such as creating a website, getting found through searches, and what to do on social media. The book serves as a roadmap to help you develop a workable plan, then keep it going. Whether you are just starting, or need to get out of a rut, this book can give you help.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This book starts off with the first two words in the preface as "Donald Trump." My first reaction is that this book is going to be full of politics even though the title is understanding digital marketing. Based on the two beginning words most people will already know if they love or hate the book. For me, this book have a few tips for digital marketing but wasn't one of my favorite Marketing books.
Thanks to Kogan Page Lmtd and NetGalley for a copy to honestly review.
Understanding Digital Marketing has been around for five editions. Five!!! Damian Ryan has brought together a group of experts that will teach you everything you NEED to know about marketing in today's world. Because of CoVid 19 the business model and the way people interact with media has changed a lot. Gone are the old ways of reaching people. There are so many choices today. How can you reach the people who would love what you have? This book will be your marketing bible.
"Understanding Digital Marketing" by Damian Ryan is quite a comprehensive guide to the world of digital marketing. The book breaks down complex concepts into simple terms, making it easy to understnd and implement the suggested startegies. Overall, this is definitely a must-read for anyone looking to gain a deeper understanding of digital marketing, it's a great resource and I highly recommend it. Rating 4 out of 5 stars My thanks and apologies to Netaglley for the delayed feedback
I needed to learn some new tricks in digital marketing but what I gained from this book was more. What started as getting the hang of digital communication, social networks and just how to create content and I have been revising my approach to marketing my ebooks online and it's great receiving feedback all thanks to what I learned herein. Thanks netgalley for the eARC.
VEry comprehensive book. Even tho most of the book's content was familiar to me I applaud the huge effort of the author to put it all together in one book. If your business needs to get a kickstart in digital marketing I can't think of any book better than this.
A thorough, well-organised, exceptionally researched, easily readable, and inspiring treasure trove of up-to-date information about digital marketing today. Would recommend to amateurs and experienced professionals alike.
Clearly this is a book you need to pick up when you want a good introduction to the subject, and would like some good examples along with it. I read this digital copy, but it has so many tips that I would recommend keeping a paperback and loads of post it's!
I'd recommend this book of you are new to digital marketing. Then it will bring a lot of insights and relevant information in this industry. Definitely the book is well written and the information is well presented. As I am involved in this industry the book was a good recap of all the information. Riverside well and definitely nice overview of digital industry starting from the history on how to represent a company online with we, email, social media, digital marketing, etc.
Awesome and informative book! I'm still half way through but it has been pretty helpful so far. I'm a content creator and a blogger and I love reading about digital marketing. This book is mostly texts a few charts. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
Digital marketing does not stand still and neither should the underlying marketing strategies that hopefully engage and attract the digital generation of those you want to be customers.
A book like this seeks to help the reader both understand digital marketing and develop some marketing strategies that work within the digital realm. Touching on matters such as social media, SEO, mobile marketing, affiliate marketing and customer engagement, the reader is given a good, basic grounding on the basics. Of course, for the more-experienced a lot of this may be unnecessary, yet in a rapidly changing, diverse and global world it may be possible that even the most-experienced has missed a particular activity, hint, tip or more. A quick perusal of the book, for them, may refresh parts of the brain that other books cannot reach!
Something must work for the author, with this book being now in its fourth edition. Certainly, it is an attractive, accessible and informative guide with a great affordable price tag to match. It is a massive book that surely will have something for everybody; its small chapters make it appear less daunting and let you dig deep into a specific issue or concern before possibly broadening your search for additional information elsewhere. The brief case studies also added welcome, external colour and knowledge to the mix.
What is there not to like? Even if you have enjoyed a previous edition, it may be worth taking a look at this as a lot can change in a very short time.
Understanding Digital Marketing, written by Damian Ryan and published by Kogan Page. ISBN 9780749478438. YYYYY
Understanding Digital Marketing: A Complete Guide to Engaging Customers and Implementing Successful Digital Campaigns, by Damian Ryan, is celebrating its five gold rings edition with its long-running title re-release. Interesting point about this book: I got on Amazon to see the reader reviews of the past four editions, and I couldn’t find any. Hmm. Digital marketing. No reviews. Digital marketing. No reviews. Well, I guess some readers are far too busy to flood places like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Goodreads with reviews about Understanding Digital Marketing, because they are up to their ear lobes employing the vast collection of skills learned while reading its pages. Okay, okay. I did find a giant collection of publisher-presented positive reviews for this book. And that result could be because this book’s reviews were so valuable, the publisher moved all the good stuff from the depths of on-the-ground reader reviews, up closer to the title so interested buyers don’t have to scroll straight down to Hades itself, learn what other people think. And just before I wrote this review, I finally arrived in online bookseller Hades myself and found the actual reader comments, which were of course, very good. In reality, Understanding Digital Marketing: A Complete Guide to Engaging Customers and Implementing Successful Digital Campaigns is a book I want and need on my everyday shelf. It makes sense to have five editions of this obviously successful and steadfast title because the face of digital marketing changes every few hours. The skills needed to conquer this imperative facet of sales are critical and often determine success from failure in the digital world. One thing I love about this book is its ability to find harmony between providing a subject overview, and diving deep into the oceanic subject with commanding confidence. When I was done with Understanding Digital Marketing: A Complete Guide to Engaging Customers and Implementing Successful Digital Campaigns as an e-book, two things occurred: I had a path to developing my own future digital marketing platform, as well as the decisive assurance that I would buy this book in print to have on my shelves for reference – edition after edition.

When I started Understanding Digital Marketing by Damien Ryan I thought it was a text book. It has 399 pages and multiple editions. The Kindle edition was 15% in before I realized it’s a very long business book.
What makes Understanding Digital Marketing so long? It’s detailed and includes all digital marketing tools. I was surprised, but impressed by podcasts’ inclusion. This is definitely a book to teach you a lot. I was recommending it (with a caveat) before I was half-done reading it.
Who is Understanding Digital Marketing For?
In each review I decide to add structure to the flow, but then the book takes over. Once again, “Who’s it for” jumps to the start. This a relatively junior book. It’s very tactical and even covers theories and models such as the 4Ps and a BCG grid. Both things I learned in my first semester of marketing at college. However, the information for a couple of tactics is out of date. I’ll touch on it more in the “not so good”, but … and I’m struggling here … it does need some knowledge to understand what’s current, inferring a mid-level marketer, or with at least a year or two of digital marketing experience.
The Good
The chapter on content. Really, I noted it twice. It’s practical, realistic, and includes a lot of mentions of engagement. The book is worth it for this chapter alone.
I also loved the detail. Sure, a marketer doesn’t really need to know the different web server options, but having an overview makes it easier talking with engineers. And marketers will be talking with engineers.
The case studies are also excellent. They are recent, and global.
The Not So Good
SEO. Really, that entire chapter is that bad. I don’t know Damien’s background, but whomever advised on that chapter is not an SEO expert. There have been two major Google algorithm updates in the last 18 months, and with the case studies being so recent, there’s no excuse for this chapter being at least two years old.
There are occasional other parts that are out-of-date too, thus the caveat. I recall hearing of videos in email as a hot topic last November, but it’s a no-no here.
Overall, this is a very useful book, and one I recommend as a starting point to digital marketing tools.
Birçoğu blog ve benzeri kitaplardan okuduğumuz bilgilerin toplanmış hali gibi. Ben bu tür yazıları çok okuduğum için belkide, bana yeni bir şey maalesef katmadı.
At the end the author calls out that this most recent edition of the book has 50% more words than the predecessor. And that is the problem.
Yes, it is very complex and very fast changing world of techniques, data, tools etc., and yes, it is well nigh impossible to make a solid and non-obsolete overview. But please try. For example the use of multiple contributors creates much unnecessary repetition and overlap. And characteristically the book is very poorly illustrated, while concurrently talking about short attention spans and the importance of infographics. The good news is that it is a handbook you can back to and find very actionable and detailed checklists and procedures for getting your digital marketing efforts under way.
For the next edition please remember:
