I don't really know how I feel. I'm looking back at the notes I took while I was reading this one and thinking back on my overall feelings throughout and, largely, they're not great? The more I think about it, the more I overwhelmingly feel frustrated. First though, let's talk about the good.
The best thing about this book? Keiko and Pike. Absolutely these two were the cutest besties and I LOVED the two of them together and how their friendship progressed. While Keeks did sometimes feel like a caricature of a neurodivers character (basically like MQ watched a few eps of the Big Bang Theory and then said "yeah I got this") she was one of the best parts of this entire story. And her and Pike? *chef's kiss*
I also truly loved Pike. He was a TREAT of a hero, honestly, and I'm really freaking glad that, while there were some bits about him and his British-ness that were definitely um .. wrong? (they call nachos "nachos," Meghan) he was very well written. He was charming, he was honest, he was funny, he made me shiver, and he was a true delight. I loved him. I loved loved loved him and I want to keep him forever. He also deserved better than Cora but oops! I didn't say that (eek).
Why the lower rating, though? A couple things (at least the non-spoilery ones):
1) The length. We could have chopped this thing by about 200 pages and a few unnecessary plot points.
2) The entire first section of the plot. I didn't love the pranks, especially when they were a one-sided attempt, and honestly didn't quite know what was running through this one particular person's mind when they could have, I don't know, been a damn adult and used their words instead of being childish. It also made the first part of this book feel like a never-ending story.
3) Cora, just in general when we were in her head. I don't know what's been going on lately, but for some reason, I've loved most of MQ's heroines more when they were side characters or being shown from someone else's POV, not when they're actually the heroine or we're in their brain. They're not well written and, if anything, they're pretty unsympathetic characters and so it makes it very hard to empathize with them and what they're going through.
4) The cover. I said what I said.
Long story short - this one was okay. There was good and there was bad, and I liked it, but Meghan Quinn has definitely written better books and this just, was not it. I'm sure this is going to be well loved by a lot of people, but it just didn't work for me and overall it was a bummer.
