I’m sad because this is the last book in the Chicago Blaze hockey series and it couldn’t have been better. I’ve loved all the books in this series, all the hockey players and their wives. The stories have all been fantastic, and how appropriate that the last book is about the team owner. Previously, Olivier has shown what a caring boss he is, and he has won the players’ loyalty and appreciation. In this story, I loved Olivier and Daphne and Giselle and Grandma Jo. The story was lovely and a great final book for the series. I’m sorry to leave this fine group of athletes and the women they love but the author promised they’ll make appearances on the next hockey series, so yay!
Olivier is a millionaire, but he came from nothing, so he has a clear idea of what is truly important, and it’s not making money just because. He has a teenage daughter, Giselle, who lives with him and she is his priority. All the employees in his company are people important to him, not just peons to do his bidding. They are all known by name and he knows their families too. So when he falls for Daphne, they are like a match in heaven.
Their first meeting is catastrophic, Daphne was in horrific car crash and would have died if not for Olivier saving her. This was important to bring them together, it was like fate threw them together. The publicity surrounding them due to the crash and rescue was invasive, so they decided to have a meet and greet and let one reporter cover. Cue #olidaph in social media! But the meeting caused another reaction, Olivier fell for Daphne. He hadn’t been so attracted to a woman in a long time, but she didn’t seem to feel the same. As Olivier tried to court her, she answered with a zinger: “you’re too rich”.
Daphne is given to philanthropic causes, she works in a non-profit that helps the poor, drug addicts, and displaced persons. She shuns anything that has anything to do with riches, luxuries and entitled people. Her parents are a constant source of irritation with their entitlement and shady code of morals that come from living in politics (her father is a Senator). However, her Grandma Jo is a hoot! Irreverent, strong and driven, she’s a force to be seen and admired. I loved seeing her become BFF’s with Olivier’s daughter. It was like a double trouble combo!
I enjoyed seeing Olivier work hard to win his woman, and enjoyed seeing Daphne falling for the man in spite of her reluctance. He was just too good a person not to fall for. She witnesses so many charitable actions, his devotion to his teenage daughter, his tolerance for her parents, and his incredible generosity for those less fortunate.
This story was just too good and it ended much too soon. I love this author’s writing! The only good thing is that now a re-read of the series and enjoyment of all these fabulous men and their wonderful spouses is now in order. Looking forward to the next series and more fantastic stories!
