I love the short stories Amy Cross writes. This collection was okay, I still had a 5 stars one that I loved. Overall 3.5 stars. Strange little horrors – 3 stars The reviews of Janet Verblanke – 4 stars The boiler – 3 stars Sitcom – 5 stars The cough – 3.5 stars The Haunting of Wind’s End Cottage – 3 stars It’s a big achievement not having a story I dnf-ed here in comparison to other short story collections.
Insanely original stories. And I mean real stories, with a satisfying ending. No weird nonsense where « original » and « weird » are just synonyms of « lazy storytelling » and « geez how can I end this crap, well let’s just not end it and make it an “open and ambiguous ending“ or stop in the middle of it. Here you have real engaging stories, with characters, a plot and, again because it’s so rare now, a proper and satisfying ending. Favorites are: Sitcom, The Boiler, The reviews of Janet Verblanke, and The haunting of Wind’s end cottage. But the rest of the stories are also great! A very recommended read!
Some may say Amy Cross' stories are badly written, full of errors and that she writes too many, saying she should write fewer stories better. But I say keep churning them out! Your ideas are way, way, way off the beaten track. Your exuberant imagination makes familiar themes refreshingly new. I love reading Amy's work (that's what it is!) and encountering her vivid imagination as it rushes out to meet me.
A selection of short stories that could be read in one sitting. Some were better than others but, overall, this book was an enjoyable read. The television soap story was the weirdest and the story of a living (boring) man haunting a ghost was most certainly the wackiest. All in all a good read.
Quick and easy read with some twists. Quite tame compared to other horror I have read and wouldn't keep me up at night scared of the dark or gross me out. My fav was the first story with the scarecrow and least fav was the last book with the irritating AF old dude. Could have used some editing and there were a few typos.
I really enjoyed this collection of short horror stories, I found them all to be very unique and immersive. I enjoyed reading these in bed before I fell asleep and found each one to be pretty much the perfect length. I'm definitely going to be checking out more of this authors work.
I've read many of Amy's books but I really enjoyed this style the best. I loved the variety ant the fact I didn't have to stay awake all night to finish each story. Cheers Amy. Keep up the good work ❤
Definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a great mix of horror stories. Well written and will definitely keep you engrossed from the first page to the last.
Have never read Amy Cross but I enjoyed this short story collection. A fast read and more about PG-rated fantasy horror than any kind of trauma inducing tales that will keep you up at night (although, the title story comes close!).
2.5 Stars... I thought the themes and concepts within the selected offerings were solid. However, not strongly written. The tales were in need of some editing. That being said, I rather enjoyed The Boiler, and The Haunting of Wind's End Cottage.
This was a great little collection of short horror stories. Some I enjoyed more than others, but over all it was a great start to my spooky month reading.
One star for the ONE story I actually really liked. Most of the stories in this book were boring/not really scary at all. The boiler story? What was that? I thought this was gonna be way more promising than it was. I liked the review story only, sorry.
Amy cross I love your books. They are all different and unusual. Please keep writing them and ill keep reading them and be Enjoying them sincerely Christine dunne Harlingen tx
