It's a classic case of mistaken identity. But this time, it's no mistake. Plans go hilariously and seductively awry when mild-mannered Audrey Thompson dresses as Ava, her flamboyant but cowardly twin. It is Audrey's task, as Ava, to break up with Ava's fiance, Zach Banister. However, as Audrey is stuffing her bra and tottering around in her sister's stilettos, she falls for Zach instead. Little does she know Zach has an agenda all his own.
There's just something about quick reads that makes me feel as if I've accomplished something. I would have finished this in about 2-3 hours if I hadn't had any distractions.
The writing was good enough to keep pulling me along with it, which I think is really good in a book. I don't like books that drag.
About this book: the main character annoyed me. Audrey's a twin and she's the meeker of the two, who takes her sister, Ava's, place for the weekend so that she can dump her boyfriend because Ava isn't nice when breaking up with people and is worried that she'll lose her job.
What got me was that Audrey kept thinking about how she was meek and then, suddenly, when she's dressed as her twin, she goes about doing all these outrageous things. I mean, yes, if you're pretending to be someone else then you can sort of become them, but if you're that shy then there's no way that you could do the sort of things Audrey did without a second thought.
Also, Zach (Ava's boyfriend) kept on calling Audrey 'dollface'. Dollface? Come on!
So...yeah. This book is good if you want something quick with an easy plot but I'm not going to be in a hurry to read it again any time soon.
Once again, I stopped a book after my self-imposed requirement of listening for one hour or reading for 100 pages. Why didn't I know from the description that it would be horrible? So many regrets. This is a racy book -- even comes with a "this is not for children" disclaimer at the beginning. I can handle racy. I can not handle bad writing. For example, "Dinner passed slower than slugs on ice." What does that even mean????? And so, alas, I bid adieu to Borrowed Stilettos.
Once I started reading this book I found it hard to put it down and went without sleep because I just wanted to keep reading. Pretentious Ava Devine persuades her down-to-earth, teacher, identical twin sister, Audrey Thompson, to take her place and impersonate her on a weekend visit with her fiancé/boyfriend, and boss, Zach Bannister with the sole intention of breaking up with him. Unable to say to no to her sister, Audrey concedes---but Ava didn't share the important detail of the coupling being a ruse---a game Zach was playing to annoy his affluent family members. What Audrey didn't count on was developing feelings for Zach, or accepting his fictitious proposal in front of his affluent and arrogant family. After a night in Zach's cabin in the mountains, Audrey as Ava admits her feelings to Zach and Zach reciprocates. When Ava unexpectedly turns up impersonating Audrey, she throws a spanner in the works and Audrey pleads with her to play along to give her a little more time. Ava ignores Audrey's pleas and outs her as being her replacement for the weekend. Zach is furious and orders her to leave and sacks Ava. Zach eventually realizes he'd fallen for Audrey and reclaims her heart in a happily ever after ending. I really enjoyed this book, and I have personally known identical twins who have played this sort of game on unsuspecting teachers and boyfriends. There were times during reading this book that I found myself laughing out loud as well experiencing anger toward Ava for requesting her sister to do it in the first instance and found myself willing them to make it to a happy ending. Highly recommend reading this book, and I now find myself wanting to read the next book in this series.
Borrowed Stilettos is a sweet pure romance in every sense. Professionally crafted, smoother than chocolate, it goes down like a Vicodin after a bad day at work. Close the doors and windows, lock out the world, and prepare to forget.
There is a reason I don’t give five stars out often. It’s to save it for books like this. At the time of this review, this book has been out for eight years. It really makes me wonder what Ms. Clark is up to these days. She’s got to be something.
I’m sure other reviews will give you a blow by blow synopsis of the plot, who does what to whom, but I think I should point out the subtle themes that are woven through the plot that make it so strong. Of course the shoes. Not just the stilettos. Then there’s the Wizard of Oz and the butler’s running editorial. There’s the constant wearing and tearing away of facades, along with their clothing.
Simply buy this. I know you will not be disappointed.
A "light read" in that it is a short-ish books and very quick paced, Rebecca J. Clark manages to bring to the fore two characters who are very real (he, even though he "comes from money", doesn't make even one mention of anything that reeks privilege that I can recall, even though the surroundings of the story bring this home subtly).
Sure the reader needs to suspend belief more than a few times but it all in good fun and casually done. It's meant, it seems to me, to be a fun, sexy romp where the lead characters each have subtle yet ingrained personal obstacles to overcome. And Rebecca J. Clark does an excellent job showing their abilities to help each other resolve these issues, even if the pace is incredibly fast (they fall in love in only three days). I was pleasantly surprised to find the instant sexual attraction believable, even for the heroine who is more a sheltered, reserved type (the hero, a guy - no stretch there, obviously since she has a great bod and is a beauty!).
When the conflict arises, I loved how Ms Clark brought home to the hero (and the reader) how the heroine has has been making attempts to show the hero her true self all along, whether the heroine herself even realized she was doing just that or not.
This was a fun, very well written story (the hero calling her "dollface" was a personal annoyance at first but I very quickly got over it as it was appropriate to his character and by mid-point, I didn't even notice it any more) with mega-heat!! If you enjoy stories that lean toward the erotic, you will love this tale of healing, hilarity, and lots of hot high heels!
First things first: who has a flip-phone in 2010? Yeah..... This book is completely unbelievable because we know there is only two sets of twins that were able to switch places and they were the Mowry sisters and the Sweet Valley high sisters. Audrey was so gullible and such a pushover. Ava was a bitch and when she walked into that dining room I was so pissed at her. I don't believe anyone could make their kind of connection over three days. No way Jose. And not to mention Audrey's actions and emotions could have rivaled a roller coaster. One moment she was gung-ho about the plans then the next she was all jittery. Idk. The moral, the whole Wizard of Oz thing, could have been better played. i have a bone to pick with Zack. Two bones actually. One, who gives oral to a woman they barely know...? That's a little intimate for someone you're just getting to properly know. Two, how much attention could you have possibly paid to this woman you ask to help you with a plan to deceive your family if you said you've know her for years. Yet, you cannot tell that she has switched places with her twin. If I remember distinctively, Audrey and Ava had different hair and builds. Hmmmm, get it together man. Not horrible, not the best either. Easy, quick read.
What a fun, sexy romance. I've read switcheroos, even wrote one myself and this was the best. I loved the story, the characters and the dynamics. Having met the author at a book signing event where we shared a table, I was intrigued by her wit and charm, and so had to read one of her books. I am so glad I did. This is a great novel!
Delightful, sexy, witty... let me see if I can come up with more wonderful words of praise here. I'm not sure what I was expecting when I picked this one up. The cover sold me, the blurb entised me, the characters seduced me. Rebecca J. Clark is an author to watch.
Try on these shoes - you won't be sorry! This story grabbed me from the front cover and the first line and never let go. The story of twin sisters who change places - one sexy and confident, one a mousy school teacher and the sexy hunky hero who confuses them. Add a clever, humorous and amorous story and you are off and running. The pace is quick, the lines are sassy and funny and the characters are fully developed and totally likable. This is a rom-com at its best, well conceived, well-written and providing all the elements you want in a romance - a sweet leading lady, a sexy leading man, gorgeous settings, hot sex and a happy ending. I can't wait to read book 2!.
What an adorable, poignant book. Audrey Thompson just can't say no to her sister Ava - the antithesis of her own persona. So when lingerie model/flight attendant Ava asks middle school teacher Audrey to impersonate her and break up with her wealthy boyfriend Zach, Audrey can't decline. What follows is laugh out loud funny as Audrey walks in Ava's stilettos (and in her leather pants!) while trying not to let bits of the real Audrey slip out with her fake cleavage.
Spice- 2.5/5, it's frequent for a short book but not very in depth. Quick love trope. This was okay, I think the audiobook narrator was lack luster. Sounded very robotic at times. Like we know you are reading off of something, but you could make it a little more natural. Ending was super cheesy, but not predictable so that saved it a little. I think the author could have gone a bit longer towards the end, was very rushed and it felt like we missed a large chunk of time.
BORROWED STILETTOS by Rebecca Clark Twins, so different, Audrey is a school teacher, and wear cotton underwear, while Ava is a model of lingerie and a flight attendant. Ava career is on the line, and wants Audrey to break up with her fiancé. Can she pull it off, first thing he ask for, is a kiss. A delightful story, of trying to be someone else. Good reading for all to enjoy. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
This was a surprisingly great read! The blurb on the back cover got me to start the book but I was honestly expecting it to suck. I was pleasantly surprised with how funny it was and with the great chemistry between the main characters. This book was a teeny bit sex heavy but it worked well because it was always associated with their emotional relationship.
Hilarious story of twins helping each other out. Audrey dresses up as Ava, who is much more outgoing than her. She has to break up with her sister's fiancé as she is too cowardly to do it herself. One sees it coming that she and Zach fall for each other. Adorable, well written story
Loved the twin switch idea. Zach was funny and sweet while falling in love with "Ava". Would have loved a little more at the ending, but hopefully Zach and Audrey will show up in the next book about Ava.
Zach has a fake fiance scheme to trick his family. Ava doesn't hear the fake part and sends her twin sister to let him down easy. Audrey poses as Ava and falls in love with Zach. Things really get complicated when Zach falls for "Ava".
I did NOT like that my version of it on ebook was messed up and words were cut off or cut in the middle on certain paragraphs and it took me out of the story.
How this piece of unadulterated crap ever made it onto my TBR list I will never know. It's 120 pages of soft porn with a whiff of a story. Anyway it fulfilled a category on my reading challenge so there's that. I need to take a shower.
DNFed at 14%. The writing is so shallow and I couldn't get into it. Narration was pretty lackluster, too. It would have only taken me a few hours to complete listening to this and yet I couldn't do anymore.
Twins switch places because one of them doesn't pay attention and the other is too nice. 6/10 There were funny moments, but most of it just seemed like a miscommunication trope on steroids.
This short read was very predictable, but fun. Twin sisters up to impersonating each other and falling in love where you're not meant to. As if love ever follows rules!
