About the author

Pen name for the teacher, translator and author Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail, he was the father of Spiritism.
He was a member of several scholarly societies, including the Historic Institute of Paris (Institut Historique), Society of Natural Sciences of France (Société des Sciences Naturelles de France), Society for the Encouragement of National Industry (Société d'Encouragement pour l'Industrie Nationale), and The Royal Academy of Arras (Académie d'Arras, Société Royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Arts). He organized and taught free courses for the underprivileged.
For several decades he helped advance Pestalozzi's pedagogy in France, founding schools and working as a teacher, educational writer and translator.

I read this book when I 12 years old and it was awesome, granted back then I didn't understand much, but it was an eye opener. Since then, I have re-read this book several times. To me this book should be called "The book that explains everything in a logical and sensible manner."
To put simply, it's a perfect marriage between spirituality and science.

This book was written in the 1850s if I'm not mistaken, and I haven't found one thing in it that is invalidated by science and current technology, that just blows my mind.

If you have spiritual questions and possess a half open mind this book will explain a lot in a reasonable manner.

No sé cómo escribir la crítica de este libro. Es que fue tan impresionante. Lo encontré en una feria de pulgas y me lo llevé de curiosilla, en parte porque me gustó el formato de preguntas y respuestas, en parte porque estaba baratelli, y resultó ser... espectacular. La mayoría de las ideas muy coherentes, mucho en qué pensar... me hizo bastante sentido. Luego me di cuenta que es un libro bastante importante, y además viejazo (1857), solo que la edición era nueva... pero la forma en que está escrito te hace sentir que es aquí y ahora, y eso es lo que pasa cuando el tema es universal. Y cuando agarra bien. Es como si te hablara directamente a ti.

Hace tiempo que no leía un libro esotérico bueno. Tuve mi gran época de exploración, tanto leyendo como acudiendo a todo tipo de magos, brujos, chamanes y videntes, y encontré algunas cosas interesantes, pero también muchos chanchullos y en especial mucha manipulación con la gente que sufre (yo en esos entonces, jaja :( ). Luego leí sobre el pobre Houdini, que pasó sus últimos años obsesionado con la muerte y que dijo con mucha vehemencia que se manifestaría a los médium cuando hubiera cruzado al otro lado, a médiums específicos en tiempos específicos así como para no asegurarse bien... y nada. Y luego está todo eso de los fondos de la comunidad escéptica (Skeptic Society) que están dispuestos a dar MILLONES de dólares a quien pueda comprobar realmente que hay algo al otro lado, o a quien tenga alguna experiencia sobrenatural o habilidad psíquica comprobable... y otra vez nada.

Nada, nada. Es muy desesperanzador y uno necesita creer en algo. Por eso creo, en parte, que dejé de leer ese tipo de libros. Me dio pena darme cuenta que la mayoría de las historias son las que uno simplemente se cuenta a sí mismo, para sentirse mejor. Y sin embargo... nunca he dejado de creer que hay algo más allá, porque si no, no tiene sentido. ¿Cómo vamos a morir, si no hemos realmente nacido? Nadie recuerda no haber existido. Y además pasan un montón de cosas raras. ¿Y por qué siento que conozco experiencias que no he estado ni cerca de vivir? ¿A dónde van también los animales y los pájaros? Incluso con las plantas, uno ve la vida latir antes de manifestarse. Es raro. Y todos sabemos, sin asomo de duda, cuando un ser está muerto, aun si la muerte es reciente... que hay ALGO que falta. Se puede apreciar a simple vista. Es como mirar una cáscara vacía. Alguien que ha dejado su casa. Que ya no está AHÍ.

En fin, no digo que este libro sea la respuesta a todo, y además Jalisco obvio que no concuerda con algunas cosas, pero sí que me pareció muy interesante, e incluso emocionante, y que me hizo de nuevo concederle a todos estos temas el beneficio de la duda. Además, es bastante moderno para su época. Dice, por ejemplo, que la esclavitud y los sacrificios animales no debieran existir, y que las mujeres son iguales a los hombres, en tiempos donde todavía no se nos dejaba ni votar. Por otro lado, mete un poco la pata cuando habla de los "salvajes" (indígenas), así casi como si fueran otro tipo de personas, pero luego dice cosas redentoras como que obvio que tienen alma (alguien lo PREGUNTÓ, qué onda el siglo XIX), y que existe solo una gran familia humana.

Muy recomendado. Aunque no es tan fácil de leer, pero no porque el lenguaje sea tan difícil, sino que porque uno tiene que parar todo el rato a pensar. Y aunque me hace un poco de ruido que sus ideas estén tan cercanas al cristianismo cuando hablamos de algo que va más allá de cualquier religión específica. Sin embargo, el cristianismo puede simplemente ser uno de los caminos. Y, para qué voy a mentir, he leído cosas más raras. Lo que no significa que sean verdaderas (o falsas).

En fin, que sabremos cuando sepamos, pero lo bueno que tiene este libro... es que da una perspectiva nueva para vivir esta vida, esta que tenemos ahora. Y en un mundo tan rápido y material como este, se aprecia.

No traigo citas porque lo leí en modo físico.

I stumbled upon the movie, "Kardec," on Netflix. Ordinarily, it is not the type of story that would hold my interest, but the fact that it is based on a true story, later led me to seek, "The Spirits'Book," by Allan Kardec. It amazes me that many contemporary spiritual teachings resonate with the messages offered by the spirits in their 1850's communications. This book offers deep wisdom and understanding at best and tingling curiosity at the very least, since we know it is based on truth. I strongly recommend both the movie and the book, with the movie as a lead in to the book.

Questionable Answers from The Spirits' Book
While I'm not typically a fan of books in this genre, I decided to explore this well-known classic to understand the author's perspective. Sometimes, it's valuable to read material that differs from your usual preferences, provided it doesn't feel like a waste of time.

I want to clarify that my intent in reading this book is solely for research and curiosity, and I don't anticipate it will significantly impact my life.

Personally, I tend to derive more learning and enjoyment from valuable classic novels, contemporary literature, and books on subjects such as science, history, and art.



I understand that critiquing views from over a century ago with contemporary perspectives in 2023 might be seen as unconventional. I acknowledge that many of today's global issues were not even conceived during the time this book was written.

My review of this book is not driven by its relevance to the present. Instead, I approached it as an entertaining narrative that provides insights into the mindset of a bygone era, which was my motivation for reading it.

Allan Kardec's "The Spirits' Book," authored by a French educator, is a seminal work in Spiritism. It offers a comprehensive understanding of the spirit world and spirit-human interaction, organized into four parts with over a thousand questions.

What does this book discuss?
The Spirits' Book, written by Allan Kardec and originally published in 1857, is considered one of the foundational texts of Spiritism. The book contains over 1000 questions and answers that Kardec claimed were communicated to him by spirits through mediums.

While some of the philosophical and moral principles presented in The Spirits' Book may contain wisdom, a critical examination reveals issues with the text including logical flaws, outdated scientific ideas, and racist, sexist and elitist views.

Logical Flaws and Contradictions
One of the main issues with The Spirits' Book is the multitude of logical flaws and contradictions contained within its pages. Many of the answers provided by the supposed spirits contain circular reasoning, assumptions stated as fact, and conclusions that do not logically follow from the arguments presented.

For example, the spirits claim their answers constitute "irrefutable truths" but provide no concrete evidence to back up this assertion other than stating the answers come from superior spirits. This is circular logic – the answers are true because they come from spirits, and we know the spirits are superior because the answers are true.

Additionally, the spirits make blanket statements about God, the purpose of life, and the nature of the afterlife that are impossible to prove or disprove. The spirits assert their existence as pure fact, despite lack of empirical evidence. The reasoning throughout lacks sufficient critical examination.



Racist, Sexist, and Elitist Views
In addition to logical problems and scientific inaccuracies, The Spirits' Book contains racist, sexist, and elitist views that are highly problematic. The spirits espouse the superiority of European Christian civilization over "primitive" cultures, which are described as less morally and intellectually developed.

Views on gender roles are also regressive, with the spirits stating that women are emotionally and intellectually inferior to men. The overall perspective is steeped in Eurocentric Christian values, portraying other cultures and faith traditions as "lesser" on the path of progress.

Additionally, the doctrine of reincarnation presented ranks spirits into hierarchies based on moral development. This perspective looks down on those perceived as less morally evolved, justifying social inequalities and suffering as deserved based on faulty reasoning from past lives that cannot be proven.

Outdated Science
Another issue with The Spirits' Book is that much of the "scientific" information communicated by the spirits reflects outdated 19th century ideas. While the spirits claim knowledge far beyond current science, many of their explanations align with scientifically disproven concepts of the time, like the theory of the "universal fluid" as the basis of matter.

Some answers provided on topics such as astronomy, physics, and biology clearly demonstrate the spirits' scientific knowledge is no greater than what was known by thinkers of the mid-1800s. Even simple facts, like the number of planets in the solar system, are incorrectly stated by the spirits.

This calls into question the reliability of the spirits dispensing advanced metaphysical truths if they cannot get basic scientific facts correct.



Lack of Historical Evidence
The Spirits' Book makes grand claims about communicating with famous historical figures like Socrates, Saint Augustine, Fenelon, and many others. However, there is no historical evidence that these spirits actually authored the answers attributed to them in the book.

Kardec provides no proof that he was actually channeling these great thinkers of the past. The supposed spirits could just as easily be manifestations of the author's own mind rather than who they claim to be. Without verification, these claims cannot be taken at face value.

The "Spirits" as Literary Devices
From a literary perspective, the supposed spirits communicating in The Spirits' Book can be viewed merely as rhetorical devices used by the author to present his philosophical worldview. The question and answer format allows Kardec to pose inquiries on topics he wants to cover and then "answer" them through the voices of the spirits.

These spiritual entities essentially serve as mouthpieces for the author's own opinions and perspectives. Examined as a literary work, the veracity of the spirits matters less than how effectively they serve to convey Kardec's ideas on morality, existence, and the purpose of life. The spirits are characters created to move the narrative rather than independent sources of wisdom.



Saying more?
Bertrand Russell stated that for claims that cannot be empirically tested or logically proven true, the intellectually honest position is suspension of judgement. Appeals to ignorance also occur frequently. Areas where current science lacks understanding are filled in with speculative answers, presenting metaphysical claims as fact. What is not known scientifically cannot logically be concluded based on assumptions.

Much of the "evidence" for the spirit communications is based on anecdotal personal experiences rather than controlled scientific investigation. Anecdotes alone do not constitute scientific proof. The supposed spirits frequently decline to directly answer questions, stating humans cannot comprehend the answers. This allows them to avoid logically defending many core assertions.

Kardec suggests that the lessons we learn in life reflect on our spiritual growth, indicating that living a moral life, and striving for spiritual advancement, is essential. The Spirits' Book offers comfort to some with its spiritual perspective on life and the afterlife, but its flaws in reasoning, outdated science, and biases warrant skepticism.

Despite a few valid moral principles, its drawbacks outweigh its insights.

The editor of this book, Robert Champ, recommended I read this book when he found my post on Facebook about my experience with ghosts. There were several things in this book that confirmed what I already suspected about the afterlife and gave me confidence that I was indeed hearing from spirits on the other side. When I learned the book was originally written in French during the 1800s, I was hesitant about purchasing it, feeling it would be a challenging or boring read. I was pleasantly surprised at how the question and answer format and the followup discussions made the text clear and easy to read. I'm only half way finished reading this book, but I highly recommend it to anyone who has questions about what goes on after we "die."

Eventhough the text was written nearly 100 years ago, it is very scientific and written for the layman on Earth who Questions the Stars Existence. Who we are, What we are, etcetera. Lovely introduction to Spiritist Philosophy (not to be confused with the Spiritualism Movement) and engages the reader by way of encouraging 4 Dimensional thought. Good one! Also Recommend - The Gosphel which helps teach the fundamental precepts of Spiritism and with inspiring writings from *very* experienced resources.

The most eye-opening book I've ever read. This is actually so much more than just a book; Spirit's Book offers guidance to our everyday life situations. This has changed my whole life; the way I see myself and others and especially the way I treat other people, how I perceive life challenges, opportunities etc. I would not say that this was easy reading, though, because to me it wasn't... Looking in the mirror and being honest is never easy, but so very very worth it!

Cada vez que leo un libro metafísico quedo con la duda de: ¿De donde diablos sale esta información? Allan Kardec supuestamente logró recopilar esto de sesiones espiritistas. Entonces a partir de allí hay dos formas de tomarse el texto: Como si fuese una historia de ficción y un mundo de fantasía. Y la otra forma es intentando extraer lo que parece lógico y omitiendo muchas de sus afirmaciones.

¿Qué es lo interesante del libro de los Espíritus? Me gusta creer que hay todo un engranaje que nos permite darle sentido a vivir. A pesar de ser una visión panteísta y antropocentrista. Qué divertido es imaginar que la vida es como la película Soul de Pixar. Una reencarnación infinita en diferentes universos, y no recordamos absolutamente nada, pero nuestra esencia perdura de manera eterna viviendo experiencias únicas. ¿Por qué no recordamos? porque lo importante son dos cosas la esencia de estar vivo y la experiencia para mejorar como individuo.

¿Qué son los espíritus según este libro? Es un sinónimo de almas, son lo mismo. Pero seamos realistas, soy un hombre de ciencia y ante algo con cero rigor científico, no puedo verlo más allá de una teoría interesante, pero imposible de comprobar.

Me parece muy loco que gente contemporánea, que posiblemente nunca leyó a Kardec, llegue a las mismas conclusiones en muchos aspectos. Este libro fue escrito en el siglo 19 y se parece mucho a otras obras como el Kybalion, o libros que expliquen el hermetismo.

Soy fanático de leer sobre ECM o Experiencias Cercanas a la muerte. Ese para mí es el mayor misterio de la vida, ¿Qué hay después de la muerte? No lo sabemos y quizás nunca lo sabremos porque lo que separa a la vida de la muerte, posiblemente ni siquiera esté en el mismo plano. No nos sirven los instrumentos científicos para poder medirlo.

Parafraseando a Neil deGrasse: quién sabe cuál es la verdad, a lo mejor y somos una especie de granja de hormigas de una civilización más avanzada. Como un laboratorio evolutivo de una raza superior no corpórea. O tal vez una simulación, hay varias cosas que nos hacen pensar en ello.

De cualquier forma, este tipo de libros sólo nos hacen explorar la posibilidad. Aunque a veces se vuelven un poco abrumadores porque hay que tener la mente abierta para no abandonar. Yo, no suelo abandonar libros, me los como de principio a fin, aunque a veces lo pase mal.

Yo leí este libro hace tiempo porque tuve un familiar médium que se manifestó espontáneamente un día cualquiera y desde entonces he buscado información por todos lados, he buscado incluso en el lado materialista y nunca hallé respuestas en él, hasta que me fui al lado dualista y hallé esta obra. En ningún libro te explica que hay médiums que entran en trance y tienen características muy peculiares. A parte de las características comunes del trance como que el médium no recuerda nada o como que pierde la sensibilidad (por ejemplo, puedes quemar o pinchar al médium y ni se inmuta), tiene mucha diferencia el trance mediúmnico de un trance hipnótico. En un trance mediúmnico es que hablas con otra persona (algunos pensarán que es el inconsciente, otros efectivamente un espíritu, yo creo efectivamente que son espíritus). Esos espíritus tienen una individualidad, conocimientos muy diferentes al del medium, algunos llegan hablar otros idiomas o usar otras palabras que no sabe el medium, un día he hablado con un espíritu con el que le hablaba mentalmente y él me contestaba articulando la voz del médium. Otra cosa asombrosa a diferencia del trance normal es que los espíritus pueden decirte cosas fuera del alcance de los sentidos, por ejemplo, si te habla un espíritu al que le has rezado, él puede hablarte de aquella vez que le rezabas y decirte tal cual las palabras que le decías o contestarte aquello de lo que le platicabas en tu mente.

Bueno en fin gracias a estas experiencias he encontrado este libro que me ha venido de perlas no solo por su contenido esotérico, sino por su filosofía. Este libro es una entrevista realizada a los espíritus por medio de la mediumnidad de los temas más transcendentales del hombre. Dios, la moral, la vida, la muerte, la inteligencia son algunos de los muchos temas que se tratan en este libro. Contiene muchas respuestas sólidas y claras a muchas preguntas que no encontraras en otros textos espirituales.

Las respuestas de los espíritus están bien enfocadas a su objetivo, sin embargo, cuentan con una gran profundidad de reflexión. No contestan con cualquier respuesta sacada de debajo de la manga, si te das la tarea de seguir indagado te darás cuenta de cuanto peso tienen sus palabras, por supuesto explicado con algunos conceptos de la época y algunas disyuntivas en las traducciones, cosa trivial. En sí este libro es el preludio de lo espiritual, el cual se tiene que masticar no tragarlo ni tampoco escupirlo.

Menciono algunas ideas del libro que me han servido bastantes, no hago un copy-paste sino escribo lo que me expresaron:

El espíritu se desarrolla en la ciencia, sabiduría y bondad. La ciencia y la sabiduría no siempre van acorde a la moral, ni tampoco los talentos o dones son sinónimos de moral. Esto es una realidad cuantos brujos, chamanes, médiums, etc. No son capaces de hacer daño por unas cuantas monedas. Al igual que cualquier profesional ya sea médico, químico, informático, etc. Cuantos no hay que llegan hacer mucho daño igualmente por dinero. Solo por mencionar unos pocos ejemplos. Ni tampoco alguien que consideramos bueno puede serlo completamente, ya que en ciertas situaciones actuaría mal.

Hay que ser valientes y enfrentar los infortunios que se presentan en la vida. Si una situación en la vida te tiene muy prisionero y no puedes hacer mucho bien, puedes pensar en hacer el bien, estudiar, tener fe en un futuro mejor.

Otra idea que me impacto mucho fue que un planeta no puede ser perfecto si hay, aunque sea un espíritu imperfecto en él. Complemento esta frase con otra del libro: dios no deshereda a nadie.

La intención lo es todo y el hecho nada. El que tiene la intención siempre va a actuar bien cuando puede y en caso de no poder siempre va a desear aquel bien. Los que han hecho bien sin intención no ha sido por él sino por causas externas.

Los espíritus buenos no se justifican, ni se quejan. Entrar en estos estados es estorboso para actuar.

Si estas deprimido, si buscas respuestas, o si buscas conceptos sólidos acerca de este tema de los espíritus este es un libro totalmente recomendado.

One can watch the film Allan Kardec on Netflix first before reading this book.

This book makes us understand that we are capable to control our anxiety with regard to death and choose our happiness by doing good. It is just a matter of believing such doctrine. We need to believe in something to gain control of our lives. Therefore, religion still plays a major part in our lives because we have faith in one supreme source (neutral perspective), god (religion perspective) or intelligence (science perspective).

Muito bom! A forma que o livro foi escrito, como se fosse uma "entrevista" deixa a leitura super interessante e fluida. Aborda de TUDO um pouco e de uma maneira nada cega, inclusive "confrontando" alguns dos principais dogmas do cristianismo (não os negando, mas dando a eles novas interpretações bem mais plausíveis). كتاب غريب لكنه مثير للاهتمام. طوال فترة قراءته كنت أتأرجح بين التصديق والتكذيب، بين صوتين أساسيين: الأول يقول ما هذا الدجل والكلام الفارغ، والآخر يقول أن معظم الأفكار التي طرحها الكتاب هي بالفعل مترسخ معظمها في عقلنا اللاواعي من مصادر سواء دينية أو اجتماعية ثقافية أو تاريخية متناقلة لنا عبر أجيال طويلة. من المستحيل الجزم بصحة أو خطأ ما طرحه الكتاب، لأنه يتناول قضية طالما شغلت الإنسان من أول يوم في تاريخ وجوده، لكن علينا أن نفهم أن وجود كلمات مثل روح، جن، شيطان..إلخ لا تعني وجودها الفيزيقي، بل وجودها فقط في الوعي الثقافي الجمعي للبشر. كما حاولت متابعة فيديو فيه تجمع "الطاولة الدوارة" ذاك المعروف لدى الأرواحيين لعقد اتصال بينهم وبين العالم الآخر للحديث مع روح ما، وانطباعي أن الأمر حقًا غريب، لا تستطيع الجزم في الأمر بشيء. فأنت للحظة تقول هذا دجل، وبعدها تشعر أن، نعم، هناك هذا العالم الآخر الذي يسكنه أرواح من ماتوا وأنهم يراقبوننا ويعرفون عنا ويمكن التواصل معهم. كان الدافع الرئيسي عندي لقراءة هذا الكتاب هو التعرف على الأرواحية، والتي تعتبر بالنسبة لي، المحطة الأخيرة في التعرف على معظم الديانات البشرية.

الكتاب الأرواح هو جزء من الكتب الهامة التي تمثل ديانة الأرواحية، ويعتبر واحدًا من خمسة أعمال أساسية عن الأرواحية. تم نشره من قبل المعلم الفرنسي هيبوليت ليون دنيزارد ريفيل، تحت الاسم المستعار ألان كارديك في 18 أبريل 1857. يعتبر أول كتاب أرواحى ولا يزال الأهم، لأنه يعالج بشكل مباشر جميع الأسئلة التي طورها ألان كارديك لاحقًا. يتكون الكتاب من مجموعة من الأسئلة المتعلقة بأصل الأرواح، والغرض من الحياة، ونظام الكون، والخير والشر، والحياة الآخرة. أما إجاباته، وفقًا لكارديك، تم طرحها من قبل مجموعة من الأرواح الذين عرّفوا أنفسهم باسم "روح الحقيقة"، الذين تواصل معهم في عدة جلسات أرواحية خلال خمسينيات القرن التاسع عشر. قام كارديك، الذي اعتبر نفسه "منظمًا" وليس مؤلفًا للأرواحية، بتجميع الأسئلة وإجاباتها حسب الموضوعات، متضمنًا استطرادات أطول كانت الأرواح تمليها عليه حول مواضيع محددة، بعضها موقعة من قبل فلاسفة مثل القديس أوغسطين وتوما الأكويني وكذلك فولتير.

10_ إمكانية ظهور الأرواح في العالم الحي عن طريق الوسائط (تدخل الأرواح)
11_ الكارما (لم يُطلق عليها في الواقع هذا الاسم) كتفسير للظلم الظاهري في العالم الحي

::بعض الأفكار الأرواحية::

1_ الإنسان لديه روح تسكن جسد مادي، أي أن ذواتنا الحقيقية ليست مادية، بل روحية.
2_ يتكون الإنسان من ثلاثة كيانات: النفس والجسد والوسط الروحي الذي يربط كليهما.
3_ الأرواح سابقة الوجود وسوف تحيا بعد فناء المادة التي تم خلقها.
4_ لا توجد ملائكة أو شياطين ككيانات منفصلة في العالم، ولكن فقط هي الأرواح الصالحة والشريرة. لكن حتى الشخص الفاسق سيصل في النهاية إلى الكمال الروحي.
5_ كل الأرواح مخلوقة بسيطة وجاهلة. إنها تتطور بشكل تدريجي فكريًا وأخلاقيًا ، بحيث تنتقل من مرتبة أدنى إلى مرتبة أعلى حتى تصل في النهاية إلى الكمال.
6_ تحافظ جميع الأرواح على فردانيتها، قبل كل حياة وأثناءها وبعدها (التجسد). ومع ذلك، فإن مقدار الذاكرة التي يحتفظ بها المرء يعتمد على مستوى التقدم الروحي.

الفصل 1: (الأرواح) يشرح ماهية الأرواح، من أين أتت، ما شكلها، كيف تتجلى، والغرض من وجودها، كيف يدركها الناس.
الفصل 2: (تجسد الأرواح) يدور حول سبب تجسد الأرواح في الأجسام المادية.
الفصل 3: (العودة من الحياة الجسدية إلى الحياة الروحية) يدور حول إلغاء التجسد (موت الجسد المادي).
الفصل 4: (تعدد الوجود) يدور حول التناسخ.
الفصل 5: (حول تعدد الوجود) هو مقال بقلم كارديك يهدف إلى توضيح عقيدة الفصل السابق.
الفصل 6: (الحياة الروحية) يشرح ما يوجد في الحياة الآخرة، والعالم الروحي.
الفصل 7: (العودة إلى الحياة الجسدية) كيف ومتى تعود الأرواح إلى الحياة عن طريق التناسخ مرة أخرى حرفيًا.
الفصل 8: (تحرير الروح) روح الحي حرة في التفاعل مع أرواح الموتى، كما في تجارب الاقتراب من الموت أو أثناء نوم عميق.

I read the AKES modern English version 2003 edition which can be ordered through their website for $15. The AKES group of Philadelphia is no longer active but they are still selling their books from their Arizona distribution center. This modern English truly helps with comprehension because some of the material is quite deep, so the version I read is written in a clear, elucidating style. This is an excellent book for those just beginning to explore a New Age or metaphysical philosophy and also for those who are well versed but seeking a source of comfort and confirmation. Advanced students of metaphysical philosophy may know a majority of tenets presented here, but I would wager there are still new concepts discussed. Much of these teachings I remembered from my spiritual readings earlier in life, but some of what I learned here surprised me and all of it is helpful to me; most importantly, ultimately, I found it uplifting and encouraging. This book will be most helpful to those who have an open mind and a thirst for evolving spiritually, especially when the traditional teachings of the church just do not make fundamental sense--especially those regarding eternal damnation. The spirit's teachings here are still Christian based and compatible with the church but they clear up misconceptions stemming mostly from errors in language--inaccuracies of translation from ancient languages. This book is best read slowly in bits and meditated upon; the beginning is pretty hard especially for one like myself who is not predisposed in this incarnation toward a thorough grasp of science. The more I read however, the more I understood, leading to a greater understanding and epiphanies as I consumed this material. I'll be keeping this for future reference and rereading as well, and hope I can find other material like it to help me with continued growth and comfort. For the metaphysical, it's a must read.

The Spirit’s Book was written by the French educator turned spiritualist Allan Kardec and was published in 1857.

During Halloween season I wanted to watch something to do with Victorian spiritualism and ended up watching the movie Kardec, which is based on a true story. Kardec was an educator and he became interested in the spiritualism at the time, but didn’t believe in it. When he came across some mediums who were more serious than some of the charlatans he encountered previously he began to become really fascinated with it all. He put together this book filled with in depth questions he puts to these mediums that channel ‘higher spirits’. I was interested and picked it up!

I didn’t know what to expect. I had previously read a couple of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s books around spiritualism from the Victorian era and while they were interesting , they can’t be taken seriously anymore. ( Although for anyone that knows about Coming of the Fairies and the whole Cottingly fairy thing, I just kinda love Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for being so willing to believe in fairies). The Spirit’s Book however is much more serious. More believable for those that are open minded about such things. The questions asked are really great and the answers are too. Honestly it all made sense. The channeled answers really do answer some big life questions. This wasn’t filled with the ‘ghosts’ and the ‘ectoplasm’ of some other writings from this time. It was simple, serious, and held as it’s basic truth that there is indeed a God who is the source of all things and that at the core all beings are spirits on a path of evolvement.

For those open minded weirdos like me who are interested, I think you should check this out! Even for those that are just simply curious about Victorian era spiritualism, this book is so different I think you’d find it fascinating. Then there will be those that are like, ‘wait what?’ 😂 in which case, just never mind.

Para quem gosta de filosofia esse livro é uma ótima escolha. O livro nada mais é que a compilação de 1019 perguntas feitas por Allan Kardec e respondidas por diversos espíritos sobre temas que envolvem tanto o cunho intelectual quanto o moral existentes em nossa sociedade. A proposta do livro é esclarecer tais assuntos, se desfazendo de todo o misticismo que a maioria das filosofias religiosas possuem, e sim, ele cumpre muito bem esse papel; as perguntas respostas são feitas de uma maneira simples e clara, capaz de atender todos os níveis de leitores.

For those who like philosophy, this book is a great choice. The book is nothing more than the compilation of 1019 questions asked by Allan Kardec and answered by various spirits on themes that involve both the intellectual and the moral in our society. The purpose of the book is to shed light on such matters, throwing aside all the mysticism that most religious philosophies have, but rather fulfilling that role; the answers questions are made in a simple and clear way, able to meet all levels of readers.

O Livro dos Espíritos é uma obra indispensável para qualquer leitor, independente de sua crença. O conteúdo que está nesse livro, encabeçado por Allan Kardec, transcende a necessidade de acreditar no espiritismo, mesmo que um dos seus cernes seja trazer este conhecimento, muitas vezes confundido com religião. Porém não o é.

O livro pode ser usado tanto por espiritas, pessoas céticas e descrentes do espiritismo como um forma indispensável de compreensão moral, não necessitando de crer em tudo o que está ali, mas sim de analisar e refletir sobre seus ensinamentos.

Por isso é de suma importância que O Livro dos Espíritos seja lido, para assim ter uma vida longe de transgressões.

Não se trata de um livro religioso, mas sim de um livro científico e filosófico.

Truth in reason

The Spiritist beliefs; and rational, reasonable reasons for their beliefs; answer the questions: 1) How could a loving God condemn a living soul to an eternal burning life in hell? (He does not) 2) What happens to its when we die from the physical world we know as earth. 3) what rational, empirical truths are there to convince us that we never truly die, but become spirit's that reincarnated. 4) What evidence does Jesus give us that this is true......

sempre tive vontade de ler/ouvir esse livro, e não sei dizer se as minhas expectativas eram altas demais ou se eu simplesmente não gostei por não concordar com muito do que é dito.

não é um livro ruim, para a época em que foi escrito e a sua finalidade é interessante (e de fato foi para mim), mas digo que é extremamente cansativo, até mesmo ao ouvir o audiobook.

Absolutely brilliant! It took me a long time to get through because it is such a heavy topic. Not the sort of book you can just read from cover to cover, it takes time to swallow the information and let it sink in.
