Master Your Mind: How to Control Your Mental State Instead of Your Mental State Controlling You

Rate this book
If you've ever promised yourself you would achieve a goal, only to find three weeks later that you've made absolutely no progress whatsoever, this book is for you. Gaining control of your mental state is not something that comes naturally. We humans are distracted creatures, with our attention pulled toward objects that bring us pleasure. In a world of abundant pleasures, it has become more and more difficult to make short term sacrifices for our own long-term progress. In MASTER YOUR MIND, author and attorney Logan Bryant breaks down the process of abandoning these distractions and becoming more disciplined and focused. Dividing this book into easy to read parts, he first explains the neuroscience behind how you make decisions, then teaches you how to work within that process to cultivate habits in tandem with your brain’s inner workings. Forcing yourself to accomplish a task can be grueling and unrewarding. But cultivating a system of disciplined focus enables you to reach your goals, and allows your brain to work in the way it evolved to work. Life should not be the pursuit of productivity, but the pursuit of balance. A balanced brain is the most productive brain. MASTER YOUR MIND is an indispensable guide to anyone who wants the best of both worlds.

Find Balance in Your Life

The book begins with a foundational lesson in neuroscience and then explains how to use this knowledge to maximize your brain’s productive state. Most importantly, the author provides specific examples of how to change your life and mindset for the better. I was surprised how deeply the last chapter about finding your purpose impacted me. Highly recommend!

A good read for our distracted culture.

“But after years of trying to maximize my productivity by just pushing through it all, I’ve learned that constant presence in the beta state is exhausting, even sickening. Your life instead should become a pursuit of balance.”

This quote really sums up what's at the crux of "Master Your Mind: How to Control Your Mental State Instead of Your Mental State Controlling You" by Logan Bryant. It begins with a brief overview of the five different brainwaves and how they operate (not to worry-it stays simple!) and goes on to explain WHY your brain does certain things. One of the items that hit me the most was: “You have the inability to be productive, but you also have the inability to relax without feeling guilty for what you should be doing.” I feel this all the time and didn't understand why - until this book.

Bryant explains how (and most importantly, why) making small adjustments to your schedule and even including sense-focused changes to your environment will help make your brain happy, more productive, and focused. It's not about magically finding more hours to work or simply waking up earlier - instead, it's about utilizing your brain properly so it fires on all cylinders when needed, then truly coming to a more peaceful resting state at night. I'm already looking forward to re-structuring my day based on the research-based evidence presented in this book.

The best thing about this book is that everything in it is doable, and the real-life examples make it real and relatable. It doesn't make you feel like you have to change your whole life to be more focused and fulfilled. Best of all, it explains the science behind it in a way that's easy to understand and lets you know you're truly on the right path. The last chapter helps you step back and really process your current habits, and encourages you to set more purposeful habits that lead to a fulfilling life of your own design. If you're looking for a book that gives you a good spark of motivation with items you can actually implement into your life, while sparing you the guilt and an impossible to-do list of "self-help" books, check this one out.

Accessible to Anyone

Master Your Mind was an easy to read book that would be accessible to many people. It was quick reading and kept me entertained by tying together concepts and presenting them in a format that was written in a way that read smoothly and simply, at no point did I feel that the knowledge being presented was overwhelming, complex, verbose or would require time to deeply process to move on like other works in this field.

Master Your Mind brought many thought provoking ideas through my mind. Many of them were straightforward self-acknowledgements of things I experience in my every day life from creating habits, both good and bad, and going through life day by day. There are many thoughts and ideas here that I’ve already begun doing without ever reading this book but many more that I hope to practice and implement.

I can’t say Master Your Mind has created a significant impact on me as only time will tell that. But I can say that if people take the work here into consideration and start any of these practices in controlling your mental states, and not letting them control you, it will make an impact on their life and hopefully they can go on and their purpose will make an impact on the world.

Concise and eye opening

Logan does a really great job at highlighting research findings and summarizing ideas that others have put out there- but approaches talking about them and actually utilizing these ideas in such a realistic way. He owns his humanity and acknowledges the faults we humans have and the challenges we face everyday. Regardless of these challenges, we still have such high expectations and get really hard on ourselves for not meeting them. This book is a great resource to revisit over and over. Not overly complex- broken down into short and simple sections with clear steps and instructions (keep it simple, stupid).

Really enjoyable read that I know I will read again.

Train your brain!

This book is fascinating! I love learning about how the brain works, and this book was so helpful in showing how we can train our brains to be more efficient to get more of what we want out of life! But it's also about balance which is something I've been lacking recently. Excited to re-read it to solidify the ideas within and then start to train my "puppy" [brain]! I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to get the most from their brains while also living a happy, balanced, life.

Insightful and relatable

This was such a great book! So insightful, but written in a way that I could understand. Logan was talking to me, not at me, like the way most books like this are written. He makes it relatable, because he tells you of his his own experiences. I took so many notes and can’t wait to apply it to my own life!
