A killer deadline. The fourth book in the Dead Air series follows Stan and Claire Martin to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where a jilted millionaire who made his fortune in strip clubs hires Stan to build an investigative news station, with the primary goal of digging up dirt on all the members of the country club that wouldn't let him join. Stan soon finds more than he bargained for when a prestigious hospital starts a bloody cover-up to prevent Stan from discovering a botched surgery by a prominent physician. Lawsuits, kidnapping and even murder threaten Stan and everyone he cares about as he must Is a story worth dying for?
I buy locally set mysteries at independent bookstores as souvenirs when we travel. I found this one at the visitor center in Deadwood SD. It was better written than I expected, and the very short chapters were great for a quick read several times a day. Not actually a mystery, and there were too many characters, but I’d read another one, and that’s saying something. I’d like to find out what’s the deal with baby John, for sure.
This one was similar to the first three in only enough ways that the continuity was there, but the plot was definitely different. Except that the weather is always a character in his stories, which is fitting for a story done in South Dakota. Took a while to keep all the new character straight, but got them all lined up in the end. Two of my favorites were the brothers Wes and Cal, they had a lot more to offer than originally revealed. Love their dry, sparely worded humor. I hope that Mr. Gould keeps going, I would like to know more about Stan and Claire's son, and the mystery that surrounds his interactions with people. Good character development, and the author always has a wild ride in the end. Did not disappoint! Look forward to more travels with Stan and Claire.
