Frothy Foul Play earns 5/5 Zen Ohmms...Engaging and Entertaining!
Mornings at The Bean Hive is Roxy’s favorite time of day with glorious views of the lake, aromatic coffee brewing, and loyal customers coming in for their daily steaming cup of one of her personal blends paired with one of her sweet treats and some gossip. Of course, it can turn hectic when Aunt Maxi pops in with her brightly colored hair, can of hair spray, and continued interrogation about wanting grand nieces or nephews. Customers range from regulars and tourists alike, but with everyone excited about Crissy Lane’s grand opening of her Bee Happy Resort, a wellness spa, many more tourists have arrived. A journalist from Healthy Women’s Magazine was encouraged by his health conscience wife to write an article about the spa and the holistic classes, and maybe a bit of Honey Springs and the coffeehouse will find its way into the article. However, Roxy’s irrepressible curiosity brings into question how Crissy was able to arrange financing for such an elaborate project; she was only a nail tech. She is, however, reminded to keep her nose to her own grind stone and the new employee outspoken Low-retta has forced on her. Fears and regrets swirl when she learns the granddaughter has a questionable past with worrisome legal entanglements. It’s all background noise when Roxy overhears a threat, learns of an argument, and, later, witnesses a murder!
Ohmmm Good! Tonya Kappes has brought eager fans, like me, another exciting book in her Killer Coffee Mystery. She offers an early tease with a peek at the murder and the victim in the Preview; this is helpful since the actual event takes awhile to actually occur in the drama. Often in Kappes’s work it is the journey. It’s been a year since the last book, “Dead to the Last Drop,” was released, so rightfully so, characters and connections are briefly revisited (good for newbies). The set up exploring suspicions, conflicts, and new characters give readers a head start trying to determine the suspects, motives, and opportunities, but descriptions of The Bean Hive’s treats and spa’s chanting classes, exploring relationships between Roxy and her aunt, mother, and her husband, and learning more about Birdie’s backstory make this a fascinating read. And the mystery of the “silent” partner...niggling!
Tonya’s writing style has always been entertaining, and her Honey Springs, Kentucky, creation is prominent on my literary “bucket list.” Her characters sparkle with southern flair and are centered in family and rich with wit, confidence, and in Low-retta’s case, some inconsistencies. There’s always fur friends in the background, but they’re not just window dressing; they often help define personalities or provide a listening ear. Can’t wait to head back to Honey Springs!
Put the Pot On! Enjoy a Coffee Tip from Roxy herself about how to avoid bitter coffee, then pair a cup with Aunt Maxi’s favorite Strawberry and Cream Donuts. The gossip is extra!
