Neon Horizon #4

Connection

Rate this book
For as long as Dragon can remember, he’s lived in a lead-lined box. It might be for his own good, but he’s under no illusion he’s still a prisoner.

Nuclear war has left the world uninhabitable. With radiation levels so high, the only way to survive is encased in lead.

Dragon’s only connection to the world comes through competitive gaming. A community linked by high-speed networks with every gamer fighting for the monthly prize. A prize coveted almost as much as breathable air.

But winning is far from easy. Maybe it’s the taking part that counts. Who’s Dragon kidding? He wants to win this month as much as any other.

Except, this month isn't like any other. For Dragon, things are about to change.

Neon Horizon book four is a fast-paced cyberpunk thriller. If you like dazzling neon dystopian landscapes, where entertainment, credits, and the latest street drugs are all worth more than human life, then you’ll love this hard-hitting grimy glimpse into the hyper-cities of the future.

“Intense pain and suffering. Welcome to the nine levels.”

Michael has done it again! A perfectly crafted story with some amazing characters, one hell of a story line and plenty of action!

This book follows Dragon. A gamer with one goal. To earn enough PP for connection.
His world comes crashing down and the truth is revealed when he meets some allies that are out to destroy the world he once knew.

The story follows them as they try to bring down the corporation and reveal the truth to the rest of Prime City.

Connection was a far cry from the first three but as it all links up it starts to look like were in for something special next!

I cannot wait for #5 Reunion 😁

CONNECTION by Michael Robertson is the fourth Neon Horizon novel and I absolutely have loved this series from beginning to end. This book switches the protagonist from Marcie to a new character named Dragon. Dragon is a professional gamer who is kept in a slave-like set of conditions where he must constantly play in order to earn points for human contact or something that passes for it. It is a horrific situation that reminds me of the Black Mirror episode, "Sixty Million Merits."

A paramilitary group of bounty hunters frees Dragon and sets him on a path to recovering both his memory as well as finding out whether his children, things he's only seen in dreams, are real or not. This is difficult because Dragon is mostly unused to the "real" world and his helpers don't particularly care whether he lives or dies. They're only in it for the payday while the people hunting them have seemingly unlimited resources to devote to destroying them. It is a tense and interesting book that deals with concepts of memory as well as identity.

Solid 5 out of 5.

This cyberpunk thriller just keeps on getting more and more exciting and this, book 4 is by far the most horrifying yet. Dragon is a gamer, and he needs to work hard to acquire enough points to make the human connection he has been so craving. He is enclosed in a box with headsets on and plugged into a game which shows him the world outside the game to be one which is radioactive and highly dangerous, thus keeping him immersed in the game for his own protection. Even though in game he faces dangers like no other, ones which prey not only on his body but even more so on his sanity. However when he takes the game to a higher level and manages to win he escapes the game to find out that everything he had been fed for years was an illusion, one big lie. He teams up with a group of bounty hunters who had aided his escape, to find out who is behind the kidnappings, the tearing apart of normal people’s lives and families, and who was gaining from their torture and imprisonment in game. The horrors he and his group of new found friends face in Neon city are even worse than those he had faced in game as he tries to remember who he had been before his mind had been swept clean and confronting his family or what was left of them. Poor Dragon faces horrors he never dreamt possible, but he is willing to fight on to bring to justice those who had stolen so much from him and many other victims like himself. This is a nail biting, edge of the seat thriller set in a horrifying futuristic dog eat dog city, which I hope we will never get to see in real life. The book ends at a very interesting part of the story which is to be continued in book 5 and which I am already dying to get my hands on!

Best episode in this series yet! Lots of action!
This fourth book in the Neon Horizon series takes the action to a new level. While there was plenty of action between the Bounty Hunters and their prey as well as each other. Connection follows a gamer named Dragon as he seeks to earn connection through a variety of games as well as other means. Without providing any spoilers I will say this episode was a departure from the first three, but it also begins to pull a number of neon City strings together which not only makes for ana excellent story but leaves you hoping there will be a fifth or sixth installment in this series. I received an Advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.

Will being this month’s champion fulfil Dragon’s desires, or will it leave him empty, broken, and with more questions than answers?
Total Score: 5/5

Summary:
Between living in a literal lead lined box to fighting for the right to get a connection with another human, things are never easy for Dragon. Having no idea about his past or what brought him to his present confinement lies in Dragon’s mind. All he has is fighting to win the games that seem to be all that is left for humanity. The monthly prize of a connection is all he has to live for until he is rescued leaving Dragon with more questions and few answers.

In Prime city power and wealth are the name of the game. Everything is on the line with few if any restrictions, that is as long as you are calling the shots. This story took off like a bomb as Dragon fights within a gaming video where the stakes are life and death. One false more could be your last with everyone looking out for themselves. The fascinating plot twists took the plot in the most unexpected direction. Best book of the series by far.

Gamer (d-r-Four-g-zero-n-six-six-six), aka Dragon, is a top-tier performer. He has spent the last few years locked in a lead box as protection from radioactivity generated by a global nuclear war, hooked to headsets and continuous games, trying to earn enough Participation Points during each month to make human contact for five minutes, a very rare experience. He has no recollection of his early life or family, but he begins to have lucid moments as game events reflect familiar faces and places. As he attains success, he becomes a problem for the city leaders and he detects forces working against him to keep him under greater control. A team of bounty hunters breaks him out of his cell and helps him understand his brain was wiped clean and everything around him has been a lie.

The story follows him and the team trying to find out his real identity, where his family might be and to stop the criminal city leaders tearing families apart and kidnapping the kids to enslave them as gamer participants for their lucrative video betting operations. This is well-written with vivid descriptions and character development that puts the reader right next to Dragon, sharing his experiences. I am not a gamer, but I did get caught up in the action and did not want to put it down. The book ended at a good point, setting the scene for the next installment. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I received an advanced copy of this book and enjoyed it thoroughly – I bought a copy to support this deserving author.

Book four of this series introduces Dragon, a gamer desperate for 'connection'.

I can't say much because I don't give spoilers and it's important for readers to enjoy the story for themselves. So, what can I say? It's well-written, fast-paced, action-packed, mysterious, tense, suspenseful, sad, political and more.

Its politics does bring to mind our world - its corruption, the cruel rich, selfishness and certainly the lack of hope. Where the rich and powerful make the rules /laws in their favour and blame the poor for the lack of means; situations created by the rich.

Prime City is like corporate greed on steroids, where the government are the puppets of the rich and only the poor pay the price for the ugliness of corruption.

As I followed Dragon's story, I remembered Marcie's and its parallels and how it ended.

Cleverly done and I am looking forward to the next book.

Highly recommended.

Another superb installment from this gripping series. Across between the Trueman Show and The Matrix. Dragon competes in video games to win PPs to pay for his upkeep. He believes that Prime City is a radioactive waste land. But all is not as it seems. This is a rollercoaster ride full of twists and turns plus amazing shocks and surprises. Definitely recommend this book

This is book 4 in The Neon Horizons series. Even though, the entire series is great this book is, imho, definitely the best. The new male protagonist is Well-described and held my attention from the very first page. I can hardly wait to read book book 5 as it will almost certainly keep me up late while reading as fast as possible. Just as this book did. I highly recommend it.
