In his masterpiece "Nibbana - The Mind Stilled", Ven. Bhikkhu K. Nyanananda traces the original meaning and significance of the Pali term Nibbana (Skt. Nirvana) based on the evidence from the discourses of the Pali Canon. This led to a detailed analysis and a re-appraisal of some of the most controversial suttas on Nibbana often quoted by scholars in support of their interpretations. The findings, however, are not presented as dry scholastic exposition of mere academic interest. Since these talks were addressed to a meditative audience keen on realizing Nibbana, edifying similes, metaphors and illustrations have their place in the discussion. The gamut of 33 sermons afforded sufficient scope for dealing with almost all the salient teachings in Buddhism from a practical point of view. The 33 sermons on Nibbana, of which the 25 are translated into English and are presented in this edition, were originally delivered by Bhikkhu Nyanananda to his fellow monks at the behest of his revered preceptor, the late venerable Matara Sri Nanarama Mahatthera, the chief incumbent of Meetirigala Hermitage and an illustrious exponent of Insight Meditation in Sri Lanka. The meeting of these two eminent disciples of the Buddha in a teacher - pupil relationship for nearly two decades, led to an outstanding seminal contribution to the understanding of the Dhamma in its correct perspective.
