After everything that happened over the holidays, private investigator Mika Chalmers needs some space - and she gets it in the form of a reunion of sorts.
The NHL Irvine Buccaneers have been around since 1989 and their 32 year anniversary is coming up. Every year, Mika gets an invitation to attend the intimate reunion of the alumni due to being the current coach’s daughter but rejects it because high heels and small talk are things she would rather avoid.
This time, however, she decides to accept. What else does she have to do for New Year’s? It’s definitely not moping over a frustrating, arrogant, jerk of a detective.
What Mika doesn’t expect is a murder to take place or for said jerk of a detective Alex Beech to be there, assigned to security detail after the Chief of Police discovered he had contact with his father. Despite the tension between the two, they’re forced to team up to solve it.
Granted, Jack Davenport is a womanizing sleaze with a peanut allergy and an ex-wife who's going for the jugular. But that doesn’t mean he deserves to be killed - especially not during a meet-and-greet with eleven other people in the room.
But when a second murder occurs, Mika realizes that this isn’t a game with targets. This is a death match, and if she doesn’t figure out who’s pulling the strings, it won’t be long before someone else is next.
Full disclosure: I am an acquired taste. I'm a typical blonde Orange County suburbanite who says 'like' more than necessary, laughs loud and probably obnoxiously, and loves to dance in the rain. I'm a 23 year old college graduate with more than a few tricks up my sleeve, and I also happen to be a pretty big Ducks fan. Oh, and I'm a writer. Like, for real.
“Cold as Ice”, is the fifth instalment in the “Mika Chalmers Hockey Mystery” by Heather C. Myers, an enticing and captivating series that blends character development and mystery in a way that reminds of any good mature aimed mystery movie series. Mika Chalmers (FMC) is a PI and daughter of the coach of the NHL Irving Buccaneers, a fact that plays a primordial role in both the particular book mystery and the overall story-arc following Mika’s character.
The 32th NHL Irvine Buccaneers anniversary reunion takes place is coming up, and this time Mika has agreed to attend, because even if that is usually not her vibe, after all that has been happening in her life in the last past months - from assault to kidnapping to break-up – she needs some kind of reprieve and fun time, and what better way to celebrate the New Year that a small circle celebration with the Irvine players and far, as far as possible from certain Detective. By now anyone who has followed this series so far knows that Fate always listens attentively to Mika’s wishes and then gives her exactly the opposite 😊 Thus the celebrations abruptly ends with Jack Davenport being murdered and ‘the one who should be avoided’ conducting the pertinent investigation front and center alongside Mika to find the one responsible, because even if Jack is not exactly ‘an angel’, he doesn’t deserve to go out in a blaze of peanut allergy, all clues points to his current girlfriend Becca, until she’s found knifed in the power room. Alex and Mika may have some private issues to resolve, but finding the solution to the murders comes as a second nature for the investigating duo.
Another captivating and thrilling murder mystery story, fast-paced, action packed, realistic and easy to follow, that interweaves to perfection the mystery plot with the romantic subplot revolving around Mika and Alex’ characters, without overshadowing the ‘whodunnit’ aspect of the story. This is a solid mystery, with a credible solution, interesting setting, and a healthy dose of chemistry between the main characters.
The series follows Mika Chalmers throughout diverse adventures that are all comprised into a single story-arc. The books are surely intended to be read in chronological order, and usually end with cliffhangers (a soft one in this particular case). However, they offer closed mysteries, and thus can also be enjoyed without any knowledge of the events related in previous instalments, as any key points relevant to the story at hand, are included (in a subtle manner) by the author. A clear recommendation to any mystery fans, specially for those with an ice hockey fav.
In this latest story, Mika is pressured by her father to go to the team Alumni Celebration after he finds her drunk and depressed after New Year's Eve. She agrees to go then runs into her teenage crush Jack Davenport. He asks her to work for him to find the evidence his ex-wife has on him cheating. She of course says no. Shortly after Davenport is found dead possibly from an allergic reaction. While Detective Beech and Mika investigate that death, one of the Ice Girls who dated Jack is found stabbed in the ladies room. Meanwhile Mika and Beech talk about their feelings for each other (finally!!). In an unexpected twist Mika discovers the killer and is saved from being attacked by him by Beech.
Anxiously looking forward to the next book.

A unique take on a manor mystery. Although if I was caught up in one of these I think the last place on Earth I’d want it to be was in a high school gym no matter how nice of a gym it is lol. There were a couple inconsistencies like Mika talking to the bartender and then later repeating that and like her observations were new. Also the talk with the PI in the restroom. Not sure if that’s an arc thing or not but they’re there. I wanna say finally about the development with Mika and Beech but with the ending idk I think there’s more that’s gonna happen before it can be smooth sailing if it ever will be. I did figure out who the baddie was before the reveal but still overall a fun read.

This is book five of The Mika Chalmers Hockey Mystery series and this one sees Mika getting herself into an absolute blinder of a state, as she fall s apart after Detective Beech’s declaration at the end of the previous book. She has split with Eric, the hockey player, and is also dealing with a lot of recent trauma from her kidnapping and her rape. Her own career as a private investigator is sort of on the sidelines as she crumbles from recent events in her love life, but at least is managing to face up to the traumatic events she went through in the last few months, with the help of a therapist. She is glad for the holiday season to avoid Beech, but spending New Year’s Eve home alone with a bottle is not what she would have imagined herself doing. Unfortunately, it seems she made some drunken calls during her night of drinking and her father visits her early the next morning to check up on her, having been called by Eric, and hearing his daughter’s drunken message!
Since she is heavily hungover, she doesn’t realise that her father might have an ulterior motive for visiting her in person, until he mentions the reunion event for alumni of the NHL Irvine Buccaneers, on their 32nd anniversary. She has avoided her father’s requests every year, fearful of meeting a certain player who she professed her love to when she was an infatuated seventeen year old! Also having to dress up and wear heels, while having to take part in small talk with loads of hockey players and their fans. She ends up agreeing to go along and decides to spend as short a tie as she can at the party, making a simple circuit and then hopefully leaving. That is until she spots Detective Beech in the room! Her father has him there acting as security for the event, which might be quite useful when one of the former players, Jack Davenport drops down dead! He had just been having a loud discussion with Mika, asking her to take a case for him, mainly to find out what evidence his ex-wife had of his cheating during their marriage, so he could save himself money. Utter sleaze bag type of behaviour and Mika was not interested in taking his case. It got quite vocal and it was just after this that he died, so the finger is pointed at her by most of the witnesses in the room. Thankfully Det. Beech doesn’t believe she is guilty and gets her to start helping him with the case, whilst they await the coroner and CSI team, after asking her a few questions for their audience. Beech was being punished for his contact with his father, in the recent case, so this was how he ended up at the event doing security.
It turns out that there is a lot more about Jack Davenport that Mika never knew, but since she isn’t a big hockey fan, even with her father being the Buccaneer’s coach for so long, she doesn’t know a lot of the gossip around the players. It seems he was involved with a number of others, one recently being with a much younger member of the team’s promotional staff, not that she was being in a single relationship, having a few on the go at one time, as some youngsters do. Whatever sort of sleazebag he was, he certainly didn’t deserve to be killed at a public event. Everyone is ordered to stay in the premises, as Beech knows one of them is definitely the killer. But it takes a second murder to occur, before a possible reason for the murders can be identified. Another murder could be next and Mika and Beech have a hard job at hand, to stop any panic amongst the other people at the event. Even her own father wants her to release everybody, so they can get some rest for the fans vs alumni game the next day! But there could easily be another murder, if she and Beech can’t discover the killer in time.
A difficult case to solve for the pair, at the same time as having to deal with their own personal issues and the feelings between them. Lots of chemistry between the two and a pressured atmosphere in which to solve a couple of murders! Another great read and good to see the two having to discuss their feelings a bit more openly. Lots of twists and turns in the murders, in such an intimate setting and what should have been a fun reunion for some and seeing their heroes for many who work with the team. Mika manages to rely on her gut instincts and her feeling of what makes sense about these murders to figure out the real identity of the killer in the end. Another success in her development as a private investigator and in her partnership on cases with Det. Beech. I look forward to the next book of the series to see what the new year brings for them both. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Ken Chalmers, Mika’s father and coach of the Bucc’s for 16 years now, found his daughter very drunk and upset on New Year’s, trying to drink away her depression over Detective Alex Beech. He convinces her to attend the twentieth anniversary of the Irvine Buccaneers Alumni Celebration as his guest. Her dad kept thinking she was upset over breaking up with Eric. But it was Beech who upset her and sent her into the drunken spiral, finally telling her Christmas Eve how he felt about her, but then gutting her with the comment that the feelings he had for her were “despite his best efforts”! So she agreed to try to have more fun, which is what her dad wanted to hear. Then she turned around and saw Detective Alex Beech! First trying to drop down and pretend to tie her shoe – but she was wearing high heels. So she hoped he wouldn’t recognize her since he had never seen her in a dress!
Before Mika could make a getaway, her one-time teenage crush when she was 17, Jack Davenport, asked what she was doing. He wants to hire her about finding what evidence his ex-wife says she has that he cheated, so that she can get more money from him. But Mika declined the job when he admitted it was true but said he had taken drugs so felt he was not responsible for his actions. Jack was a total jerk and didn’t like her reasons for not helping, so they argued until Beech came up behind her to see what the trouble was. When Jack left, Alex again tried to explain how he felt. But a sudden scream stopped them as someone said that Jack Davenport was dead!
Mika’s father said it was most likely an allergic reaction. Jack was highly allergic to peanuts. But the food had been specially ordered to make sure there were no peanut allergens possible. Also Jack’s epi-pen was missing. When they talked to the Ice Girls to find out who Jack was seeing, Mika found Becca in the ladies room and questioned her. She was in tears and upset, but answered the questions. Then Alex and Mika started looking for Dustin Partridge and questioned him. They went back to the restroom to confirm some information with Becca, only to find her now dead, killed by a knife wound in the ladies room. If they don’t find the killer quickly, who will be next to die?
This was an excellent continuation of the series where we see Alex and Mika working together to solve two murders! The author excels at revealing the characters and their personalities to make them real and believable! The story line’s action fully draws the reader in, especially with Alex and Mika’s personal issues that have not been resolved. Grab your copy to see the story play out in an exciting way as Mika is once more in extreme danger. Can Alex keep her from harm in time?
I received a free copy of this book for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This the 5th book in a series about Mika Chalmers, private investigator and daughter of a hockey coach. I was immediately intrigued as I love mysteries and hockey, so I gave it a try despite having not read any of the previous books. Throughout the story, we learn what happened to Mika in previous books in the series, so I never felt that I was missing anything by starting later.
Mika is attending a New Year's Day alumni event for her father's hockey team, for the first time in a decade, where her teenage crush, ex-boyfriend, and the man she's in love with all happen to be in attendance. When a dead body turns up, Mika has to work with detective Alex Beech, the man she's in love with, to solve it. When a second body turns up, they realize it's much bigger than they realized.
While the story gave a neatly wrapped up murder mystery with motivations that made sense, I didn't connect with Mika or the other characters. The story opens with Mika getting drunk, a rare occasion. That seemed appropriate for a late 20's character who feels that their life in shambles, but it turns out the self-absorption and focus on her own problems is a theme throughout the book and I found it jarring how frequently she cut to her own problems in the middle of trying to solve a murder with a ticking clock before they had to let everyone go home. I appreciated that the author was developing the relationships between main characters, but their little interludes fell flat for me and I found myself frustrated with them for how they handled everything.
Overall, it's a fine little mystery, but I didn't connect enough to the characters to care what happens next.
Mika Chalmers is feeling sorry for herself on New Year’s as she's broken up with her latest boyfriend so she's home alone. She drinks too much and calls one of her ex-boyfriends who happens to be one of the hockey players on her father’s hockey team. Having a hangover is not the best way to start a new year as her father shows up to see how she's doing.
He does tell her that he needs her to attend an alumni reception for the 20th anniversary of the Irvine Buccaneers. Also attending this shindig are some of her ex-boyfriends, one being her most recent love interest, Detective Alex Beech. During the evening, one of the attendees is found dead. Alex, as part of the security team, begins investigating and asks Mika to assist as she is Private Investigator. As she knows most of these people, he’s hoping that she can get them to talk more freely.
The bodies start stacking up as the two work on identifying the culprit.

Two-person conversation with a murder case sprinkled in
This was the first book in the series that I've read. The story primarily revolves around a conversation between Mika and Beech as they talk about their feelings for each other. If this were a movie, 90% of it would be close ups of these two characters. Following their conversation gave me a bit of whiplash; they'd talk about their relationship in one breath and about the murder case they were solving in the next. I also found their conversation repetitive (Mika states her feelings; Beech responds; next conversation is the same as the last), as well as the surrounding story. The writing was fine; there were a few editing errors; the murder storyline was good., I kept hoping for a change of scene or style all the way to the end, but it never arrived.
Mika's father convinces her to attend a team alum function. She's still hungover, hoping to hide for most of the event. It turns out to be a rather interesting evening. We have (1) Beech in attendance to provide security, (2) two murders, and (3) another PI tailing one of the people who ends up being murdered. This is book five, a continuation of this series, and I'm loving every book more than the last. Beech and Mika haven't resolved their issues, causing a great deal of awkwardness between them. There are some twists and turns in the story line, and while it isn't difficult to figure out who the murderer is, the motive is a bit of a mystery. I can't wait for the next installment!

This story was a little different to the others in the series. When a retired pro hockey player is murdered at an alumni celebration, Mika and Beech have to find out who the killer is. Because the killer is at the event they don’t allow anyone to leave or anyone new to enter. And there are so many who had a motive to kill Jack. But when a woman he was seeing is found murdered in the bathroom, now they have two murders to solve, and the suspect list has increased. And Mika and Beech’s relationship. They have declared they love each other but Beech doesn’t seem eager to do anything about it. Mika is sad and wants to know where she stand with him. As the story begins, Mika is still recovering from her kidnapping and has yet to speak to Beech. When they do see each other things don’t go well which results in an uncharacteristic night of heavy drinking for Mika. This leads to a drunk call to her ex and a visit from her father resulting in her accompanying him to his hockey team’s alumni dinner. Of course Beech is there as security and when Mika finds a body they join forces to solve the murder. They also spend time trying to figure out their feelings for one another. Having read the previous books in the series I rather enjoyed the relationship discussions and found them to be pretty on point for their interactions to date. I received an advance copy of this book and voluntarily left a review.
This is book 5 of the Mika Chalmers Mystery Series. Mika has a hangover while she is at the hockey event that her dad made her go to. Beech is there for security, and they haven't talked since he came back after she was kidnapped. Her high school crush and first embarrassment is found dead. They have to work together and try to control the feelings between them while figuring out who murdered the alumni. Besides the feelings between the two she is trying not to get sick from the hang over. This is one of the best books in this series so far. You laugh, you feel the anger, the romance, and past coming back.

This book takes place very shortly after the events of Holiday on Ice. Mika’s still coming to terms with what she learned and the decisions she made, and she’s not handling it at all well. When her father inadvertently manoeuvres her and Beech into attending the same event, the fur flies. I loved that we got to see this pair finally talk some of their drama out. However, I narrowed in on the villain very early in the story. At the time, I didn’t know the motives, but the character stuck out. On the other hand, the ending leaves me very curious about what’s coming next for Mika. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book through Booksprout.
Finally. The heat of Castle with twists and turns. Mika gives herself a hangover and her Dad guilts her going to his hockey banquet. She has to face the humiliation of facing her teenage crush who turned her down. Sadly he is now a slime ball and wants to hire her to find out and discredit his ex wife claim he cheated on her. Even though he did. Mika of course refuses and embarrassingly everyone hears them arguing. Unfortunately, he is murdered and she uncomfortably teams with Beech to solve the murder. Who did it and will Mika survive figuring out who? Mike and Beech heat up together.

Book 5 of The Mika Chalmers Mystery serie. For maximum enjoyment read the previous books before this one. 'After everything that happened over the holidays, private investigator Mika Chalmers needs some space - and she gets it in the form of a reunion of sorts.'
This characters were very well written and developed and completely appealing and likeable. Plot was intriguing and well paced. World building continues to be exemplary. Great addition to the series. Enjoyed immensely and highly recommend this series.

Mika has gotten another invitation to the NHL Irvine Buccaneers anniversary party. She usually declines as parties are not for her but for some reason she wants to go this year. She has decided that she is tired of moping over her jerk of a boyfriend and wants to party. Unfortunately there is a murder and who else gets assigned to work the case, the jerk boyfriend naturally. They, however, are teamed up to solve the case.

This is book 5 in the series and it does help to read the previous books in the series just so you know some of the returning characters and their relationships to each other. The story line is filled with suspense that can keep you on the edge of your seat, intrigue and mystery that keep you turning the pages. An enjoyable read and fans of well written mysteries with strong characters will definitely enjoy it.

This is a continuation in a series and if you are not familiar with the ongoing basic romance story-line that part of the book might be a bit confusing at first but it will soon work its way out in your mind and you begin rooting for Mika and Alex to get together. The mystery surrounding the murders is good and well-written and I found the whole book quite enjoyable. Now I have to go and read the first four books in the series to get a complete picture of the romance between Mika and Alex!

Cold As Ice is book five and a great addition to The Mika Chalmers Hockey Mystery. Mika decides to go to the annual alumni party for the Buccaneers rather than spending New Year's alone. Little did she know Det. Alex would be there and they would end up working a murder case together at the party. As these two search for the killer they finally admit how they feel for each other. This is a well written murder mystery with a little love story twist. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
Very enjoyable and easy to read. Not very believable that a cop and PI would be discussing their issues while investigating a murder, but hey, it’s a book, and I like when I can just disappear into another world and someone else’s life for a while! I love a book where someone else’s problems makes me forget mine. Mika and Beech definitely have problems too! It was fun working out the clues. I figured this one out before the end, too! Lol!

When a retired Ice Hockey player drops dead at a club reunion, Mika and Beech find themselves in the middle of a murder investigation.
This is the best title in the series so far. The balance between the investigation and Mika's personal life hits the right mark and the two detectives work well together to solve the mystery.
With Mika's ex boyfriend being sidelined for most of the book, this allows for a better examination of her and Beech's relationship and puts the investigation more in the spotlight.
3.5 star, book 5 in Mika series was a quick read. Mika gets an invitation to go with her father to reunion of the alumni. Jack Davenport,Mika's crush and embarrassment when she was young is there and asking her for help with his ex wife. Alex Beech is also there, assigned to security by Chief of Police.Later on Jack is dead, and a lot of people are suspect.Mika and Alex need to team up,and find the killer.
With emotion strung high between them, will they get the work done?
Fast and easy mystery read, perfect for summer.Recommend.
The reunion is happening again and normally she refused but this time she accepted. What a mistake. The man she has been having issues with is there and when a murder happens. Now they need to work together to solve it. Can they stop the killer before they hit again? Who is the killer? See if they can find out

Another good book in the series with a mystery to solve and the ongoing relationship between Mika and Beech. While attending an Irvine Buccs alumni weekend with her father, Mika's teenage crush is killed with peanut oil as the murder weapon. Beech is there as security and the two must work together while trying to figure out exactly what they are to each other. Love the constant evolution of their romance and can't wait for the next book to see where they go next.
In an effort to step back and regain perspective Mika attends the alumni reunion. She hasn’t attended first several years and after an interaction with a retired player that she expressed her love for when she was eighteen, dies from an allergy. Mika and Beech once again must find the killer. Of course there is an interesting cliffhanger. Looking forward to book 6. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by booksprout.
Heather C. Myers never fails to exceed my expectations and this book is no exception. Once again, we have wonderful character work and a fantastic story line. This was a great addition to this series and I look forward to the next book by this author.

Another mystery throws Alex and Mika together and racing against time to find the culprit. They finally talk about their feelings which was a long time coming but the mystery will keep you on edge the whole time.
I enjoyed this well written and developed storyline that is anything but cold as ice. The characters are engaging and well developed with plenty of steamy chemistry between them.
