Michael Slater is Emeritus Professor of Victorian Literature at Birkbeck College, University of London, past President of the International Dickens Fellowship and of the Dickens Society of America, and former editor of the journal The Dickensian. He has taught and continues to lecture widely in the USA, across Europe, Australasia and the Far East.
This is a short, concise, and informative biography of Dickens, which provides context for most of his literary works. It's not incredibly detailed, but that's fine, since it's intended to be a brief overview. It also provides good references, (particularly to Forster's biography and Dickens's letters) which give the reader places to go if they're looking for something deeper.
