Quite popular in his lifetime primarily for his amusing maritime tales of life along the London docks (many of them humorous as well as sardonic in tone). A farce told of a young first mate who brings a lady friend aboard his brother-in-law's schooner for an overnight trip. An argument occurs between the young lady and the mate, and the captain is put in an awkward position when they finally arrive at their destination and the captain's wife discovers he has a young lady hidden aboard. This tale was one of twelve included in an anthology of the author's titled " The Lady of the Barge and Other Stories".
The Arabella is set to sail with Captain Gibbs at the helm. A short and uncomplicated trip for the barge, if not for first mate Ted secretly sneaking a beautiful lady into the ship to gain her favor. Yet tensions and frictions begins to arise when Lucy Harris seems to lean her eye for the Captain, to the disheartening of poor Ted.
An amusing and rascally little tale of enamourment, jealousy and mischief. On the whole, this felt like reading a grown up version of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn bickering over Becky and playing a prank on each other and getting their just deserts. Not bad. Compelling and humorous. Fun.
Nada mal. Atrapante y humorístico. Divertido.
