This brilliant manga, original by Kazuo Umezu and this re-make by Hisashi Eguchi, is both eye-opening and terrifying. It's only 10 pages, but tells a disturbing story that anyone who has struggled with weight can relate to in some way (read from right to left)...
Kazuo Umezu or Kazuo Umezz was a Japanese manga artist, musician and actor. Starting his career in the 1950s, he is among the most famous artists of horror manga and has been vital for its development, considered the "god of horror manga". In 1960s shōjo manga like Reptilia, he broke the industry's conventions by combining the aesthetics of the commercial manga industry with gruesome visual imagery inspired by Japanese folktales, which created a boom of horror manga and influenced manga artists of following generations. He created successful manga series such as The Drifting Classroom, Makoto-chan and My Name Is Shingo, until he retired from drawing manga in the mid 1990s. He was a public figure in Japan, known for wearing red-and-white-striped shirts and doing his signature "Gwash" hand gesture.
I love this manga even despite how short it is. First of all, the art style is gorgeous and the way Tomoko's face is drawn is beautiful every single time. Another thing is how real it is. I personally relate to Tomoko a lot in her pains and frustration about the way she looks and feels about herself and I believe that many others do. All of these frustrations build up into Tomoko losing weight and finally asking out Akira-despite the way he has insulted her the first time-and falling into a passionate kiss with him. But even after this, her pain and frustration still hasn't reached it's peak. It explodes as she tears Akira's face apart with just her mouth; her surpressed appetite taking the best of her. At that moment, Tomoko eats Akira alive not caring about how many calories are in human meat. At the end, she finally comes to her senses and realises that she has eaten another human being. A truly gorgeous ending to a horrible beginning. Tomoko's frustration has finally been set free.
