She internalized her physical scars. His emotional walls keep him safe. Will a rescue mission in icy terrain melt their guarded hearts?
Brielle Ives prefers dogs to people, and who could blame her? Her sled dogs are loyal to a fault, trust her implicitly, and couldn’t care less about the scars that mar her face. The only human who’s never disappointed her is her mentor, Dr. William Hunter. When his plane goes missing in the remote Alaskan wilderness, Bree will do anything to find him... even if it means turning to a frustrating, irresponsible, and too-sexy-for-his-own-good California boy for help.
When Ellis Hunter enlisted in the Army at eighteen, he put Alaska — and his womanizing drunk of a father — in his rearview mirror. He promised himself he’d never return, but even he can’t resist Bree’s panicked plea for help. If she’s hell-bent on trekking into the bush to find his father, then he's determined to go with her. But Ellis isn’t the only one shadowing Bree’s rescue attempt…
When the search for answers leaves Ellis and Bree trapped together in the wilds of Alaska, they’ll have to put aside their differences — and an attraction hot enough to melt glaciers — to survive the elements. Because someone dangerous lurks in that icy wilderness... a killer desperate to keep Dr. William Hunter's secrets buried deep in the snow.
Northern Escape is the thrilling first book in the Northern Rescue romantic suspense series. If you like captivating family dynamics, steamy chemistry, and edge-of-your-seat action, then you’ll love Tonya Burrows’ sizzling adventure.
Tonya Burrows wrote her first romance at age thirteen and hasn't put down her pen since. Originally from a small town in Western New York, she suffers from a bad case of wanderlust and is still searching for a place to call home. She shares her adventures with her husband, two adorable doodles, and Scribble the Writer Cat.

the setup… Ellis Hunter was 18-years old when he left his home and two brothers in Alaska and never looked back. He did a military stint and landed in Los Angeles, living an aimless but satisfying life as a dog trainer to mostly wealthy married women. Brielle (Bree) Ives is a musher who lives in isolation with her beloved huskies in Anchorage. Will Hunter, who runs an animal rescue clinic, has become like a father to her so when he calls with a desperate message and later turns up missing, she reaches out to his sons for help. Aware that Will’s relationships with his sons were fractured, Bree was still unprepared for their indifference about his situation. Ellis, however, couldn’t get past the guilt of letting her set out alone to find him and returns to the place he left that brought him so much misery many years ago.
the heart of the story… Ellis is not only estranged from his father but his two brothers as well. This family couldn’t be more dysfunctional and the things that got them to this place took some time to be revealed. Bree’s history is equally tragic, especially as her face is disfigured from circumstances of her childhood. But these two people find some common ground to set out in the brutal and unforgiving Alaskan wilderness to find Will Hunter. Bree’s skills with her dogs is extraordinary and one of the most compelling aspects of the story. Things get dangerous not only from the weather but a sinister force who’s determined to thwart their search. And, somehow these two people find strength from each other as well as an unexpected romance.
the bottom line… I’m averse to cold weather and Alaska’s extreme temperatures just takes this to a whole new thing! It becomes another character and the setting is a major force on its own. You might wonder why I decided to read this story given my aversion but I’m a diehard fan of the author and have loved everything she’s written. She didn’t fail me as I was transported (reluctantly) into the search, feeling the effects of the brutal weather and the awful circumstances Ellis and Bree ended up in. But what captured my heart was something I never saw coming…those sled dogs! With names like Moonbeam, Diggy and Norte to name a few, (including a Chinese Crested called Peanut) and you get a sense of their personalities, which I hadn’t associated with the breed. I fell for all of them and they became my heroes. This trilogy has a continuing story arc so the mysteries aren’t all solved here. But Bree and Ellis get closer to the truth and I’m now hooked to find the answers. The story turned out to be much more than I’d anticipated and one I enjoyed, including the unconventional romance.
If the Alaskan wilderness and the legendary Iditarod race and the idea of sledding across the miles of untouched land are long-standing points of fascination, then Tonya Burrows’s ‘Northern Rescue’—built around the reluctant reunion of three estranged brothers who have a long time ago, left each other to fend for themselves now back in search for their missing father—would be the book to pick up.
At the centre of the mystery is Brielle Ives, who doggedly (pun intended) pursues every line of inquiry she can in her search for Will Hunter, but gets saddled with his son instead—newly returned from California and proves more of a hindrance than a help.
As an establishing novel, it isn’t surprising to have many questions left unanswered by the end of it, but there’s still so much to enjoy about the atmospheric setting and the world of sledding. Burrows writes lovingly about the dogs famed for their endurance, endowing them with the distinct personalities that made Brie’s every interaction with her huskies a joy to read about.
From the romance-perspective however, ‘Northern Rescue’ is just one of those books where I find my sympathies skewing towards one protagonist more than the other. I found myself intrigued by (then later, cheering for) Brie, whose issues in the form of her illness and choice of profession more relatable than Ellis. Her determination, capability and strength made her the alpha woman for me and I was in fact, admiringly happy to see a female protagonist taking so much of the lead in her push to get to heart of Will Hunter’s disappearance, so at home in the inhospitable environment of the Alaskan wilds as Ellis floundered time and again.
On the contrary, Ellis made a poor first impression—screwing around in L.A. with married women?!—with his deliberate choice to lead an irresponsible, shallow, womanising lifestyle because of deep-seated his daddy issues. While I also do understand that ‘Northern Rescue’ is one that charts his personal growth, his sudden change of heart and seemingly-quick instant-love with Brie didn’t really convince me about the ‘worthiness’ of his character so to speak, as a romantic hero. Then again, there are some character flaws that are more palatable to some readers more than others; Ellis just wasn’t likeable to start with as he crossed some of my personal hard limits and pretty much stayed unconvincing and not quite redeemed throughout the whole book.
Burrows does however, drop enough loose threads to keep me wanting more, setting up the second book with some tantalising hooks that you’ll want to willingly bite into.
Bree Ives has found solace in the life she has made for herself. Away from people and away from their stares. With her dogs. Deep in the wilds of Alaska. She has had only one friend, Dr. Hunter. He saved her dogs life and saved hers by becoming her only real friend. But now Dr. Hunter has gone missing and Bree is hoping his sons will help her find him.
Ellis Hunter is a man that lives day to day. Does what he wants and who he wants under the rays of the continuous California sunshine. No responsibilities and no commitments. No cold. Just the way he likes it. The opposite of the childhood thrust upon him by his drunkard father and his needy younger brothers. When he gets the call that his dad needs help, it’s really no suprise he thinks his dad just went on another bender, but something in Bree’s plea forces him to go back home to Alaska to help with the search for his dad.
This was really a wonderful slow burn with a ton of twists and turns to keep you hooked to the end. The characters were wonderful - even the doggy characters. Ms. Burrow’s did a really great job creating Ellis as a flawed character that slowly was finding his redemption and how Bree really struggled to reconcile the fact that the Dr. Hunter she new and loved with the father that emotionally wrecked his sons. There were many laugh out loud moments as well as ones that tugged at your heartstrings. A great read that I’d highly recommend!
On the one hand this book got me out of my funk on the other hand this book is totally ridiculous. I mean really how much shite can happen in one book. Now I also know that the heroine wants to find out what happened to Dr. William Hunter so she ropes the sons it but seriously that went way to far what thy were doing. Kind of a mess and I am in the minority.
Brielle Ives trains and runs sled dogs. She prefers the company of them to other people since they don't care about the scars on her face. When her mentor Dr. William Hunter goes missing in the Alaskan wilderness, she will do anything to find him.
Ellis Hunter enlisted in the army at eighteen and never looked back. When Bree reaches out for help to find his father, he returns to Alaska to help search.
They quickly realize that there is more than just a simple case of a missing plane when danger seems to present at every turn.
My Thoughts:
I finished this book in one sitting. Books set in Alaska are a weakness for me. I was hooked from the start and didn't want to put it down. I fell for Ellis almost immediately, all because of Peanut. Bree was the type of heroine I love. Strong and amazing.
Their journey together kept me turning the pages. This was full of chemistry, action and humour. I can't wait for the next book in the series!
This first book in the series sets the stage for the rest of the series. When Dr. Will Hunter tells Brielle/Bree Ives to stay away because he’s in danger, and later his plane goes missing, she’s determined to go out into the Alaskan wilderness and find him. In a life where she’s been disfigured most of her life and ostracized because of it, Dr. Will has been the only person who has shown her compassion and a true friendship, almost like a father. She’ll do anything to help him out, even contact his three sons. Ellis Hunter is the oldest, now living in California without worries and responsibilities after a childhood filled with an irresponsible and drunken father who left him to care for his younger brothers. When he left Alaska at the edge of 18, he left not only Alaska, but brothers that resented him. He comes back for Bree, a woman that captivates him from the moment he meets her . What happens when the wilderness and a gunman tries to kill them? Why the threat? Where is Dr. Will? Why did he disappear? Is he dead? Some questions are answered while others are left for us to wonder and hope that the next book gives us the answers. Though upon the first meeting with Ellis I tagged him as a womanizer and drifter, the author shows us that he really is more than what we first thought. The description of Alaskan and the huskies as well as the complicated relationship or lack thereof between the brothers, give us complex characters are will likely keep us engaged in the rest of the series. Definitely a good start in the series. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
some of the writing was a bit corny, but otherwise this was really good. i loved that the dogs were such an important part of the story and it was so sweet to read a book where every single character is a dog lover. for anyone wondering, no dogs died in this book but . it ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger which i usually hate but i actually didn't mind it here bc it did end in an hea for ellis and bree and most of the mystery/suspense elements were wrapped up too; there was a new-ish element introduced in the epilogue that set the scene for the next book in the series, so it was only a slight cliffhanger. this was a really entertaining quick read and i look forward to reading the other two brothers' stories too.
i really liked this book! There is a lot of action and suspense, tension but also some sweet moments and the part with the dogs are simply wonderful!.I love Norte. Bree is a great character, i did not know what what she suffered but it sure made her even more deserving of respect in my eyes. Ellis has been hurt and made mistakes but with his childhood it's understandable still i love how he is loving and protective with the dogs ( even ugly one^^;;) We learn about the brothers'past a little and it's very interesting. ( I like Damian less; i want to learn more about Nate)
the only thing i liked less is the cliffhanger...we don't have all the answers in fact we nearly have none but since it's well written it just makes me more impatient for book 2 and more puppy love
Tonya Burrows kicks off a new series with a pulse pounding story that will have you glued to the pages as twists and turns unfold and draw you deeper into the story.
This book was a fast paced read that had me hooked from the opening page to the last when I put it down with a satisfied sigh. I loved the word building, characters and of course the setting.
Ellis and Bree’s love story is just as fast paced as the rest of the story and it’s one that drew me in and had me goofy grinning at the end of the book.
The author has done a fantastic job of starting a new series, laying the groundwork for the next books while keeping you engaged with the story.
For me this was a must read for romantic suspense readers. I loved it.
I loved this book! Being an animal lover I assumed I would enjoy this story and I certainly did. I loved the different personalities of the dogs and how the story line shows aspects of each one, including little Peanut. I laughed out loud so many times while reading this book. Great story and an awesome beginning to this series. I can't wait for the rest of the series! Tonya Burrows never disappoints!
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The dogs were fabulous with their own distinct personalities, from laid-back Chilly to joyful but dumb Moonbeam to diva Peanut. Bree was a wonderful heroine: smart, capable, damaged, vulnerable. I liked Ellis. The setting was...hard to fathom (says she who was reading this in 35°C heat!) I can't imagine cold like Alaska in winter: icy water under frozen lakes, razor ice, hypothermia... Exciting plot which carries through into Nate's story. Highly recommended.
I received this book as an ARC and started reading it as soon as I got it. I started out thinking that I was not going to like Ellis at all! Wrong! I loved him...and Bree and all the dogs. This story has it all - joy, heartbreak, suspense, romance. I can't wait for the next book in the series (Ellis's brother Nathan)
I absolutely loved this book, there is action, adventure and cute as hell doggos. What more could a girl ask for? I’m desperately needing to read more now to solve the mystery of what happened to dr. Will. Can’t wait to read nates story and also find out what Damian is hiding.
Absolutely loved this book..full of danger, suspense, three hunky brothers who don't like each other..and dogs, lots and lots of dogs..Really good storyline, kept me turning the pages as quickly as I could..just gonna say Moonbeam is amazing and hilarious.
Northern Escape introduces us to the dysfunctional Hunter family--Eliis, the oldest brother who left Alaska never intending to return, his younger (but just as troubled) half brothers Nate and Damian, and the dad they all blame for their messed up childhoods, Will. When her only real friend disappears with only a desperate phone call and a missing plane to point to his possible whereabouts, Brielle Ives tries calling all three brothers for help. They all turn her down.
Until Ellis actually shows up.
From almost the very minute Bree and Ellis set out to find Will, the danger begins. I don't want to spoil anything, but believe me when I tell you it's pretty much non-stop. Really, once the warning signal goes off on Bree's plane you can pretty much kiss any other plans you had for your time good bye, because you're not going to want to put this one down until Bree and Ellis are out of danger again.
(Though--are they really out of danger? Only time will tell...and future books in the series.)
As much as I love the human characters here--not only Ellis and Bree, but even Damian, Ellis's youngest half brother who is definitely hiding something from him and Nate--it's the dogs who absolutely steal the show. Bree's sled dogs, led by Norte and Aleu, and OMG Peanut, the reincarnated heiress come back to life in the body of a diva Chinese Crested, might be my new favorite fictional dogs of all time. Ms Burrows managed to give them and every single dog on Bree's team their own distinct personality, and it was delightful. My fingers are crossed that the dogs continue to play a co-starring role in the rest of the series!
Northern Escape gives us an HEA for Bree and Ellis, though since their initial goal of figuring out where Ellis's dad is and what he was embroiled in that led to his disappearance is very much *not* resolved, for the Hunters as a whole this is more of an HFN. To be continued with Nate and Freya's story, which absolutely cannot come out soon enough to suit me...
Rating: 4 stars / A-
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. That is by far one of most suspensful fictional books I've read in the last couple of months. You get one or two warm-up-chapters, but once that little plane is airborne, I could not put the book down (yeah, it's been a very short night). Bree and Ellis are in for a ride they never thought they would. Crash landing on a frozen lake, almost drowning (Ellis) and therefor almost dying, hunted by the killer who's closing in on them by the minute. And many secrets around William Hunter that are not fully uncovert. So many questions are to be answered in the next book of the series, when Nate is to fall in love. Absolutely great story. The first book I've read by this author and it's definitely not the last one.
Update:
I voluntarily listened to the audiobook provided by the author in existence for a review. It’s quite the suspensful story with a lot of secrets that do not get fully uncovered in the first book of the series. Stephen Borne once more does a fabulous job of getting the characters right on spot. His smooth voice fits perfectly.

Ellis Hunter is very happy living the carefree life of a dog trainer/beach bum in California; he left the harsh life and climate of Alaska behind him a long time ago and never, ever wants to head back. But when he receives a call from the enigmatic Brielle Ives telling him his estranged veterinarian father is missing in the Alaskan bush, he finds himself and his dog heading to the frozen north…
Tonya Burrows is back with a vengeance in this new series! Northern Escape is filled chock full of humor, angst, and complicated family dynamics, all set against the brutal, beautiful wilderness of Alaska. I found myself totally wrapped up in Ellis and Bree’s story – I could not put it down! What was William Hunter involved with prior to his disappearance? Why was his animal hospital/veterinary practice, Northern Rescue, in such an abandoned state? Ellis’s brother Nate also heeded Bree’s phone call, coming in from Fairbanks. But what is his California-based, reality TV/Celebrity veterinarian brother and his entourage doing in Alaska? Clearly the missing Dr. Hunter is not the only mystery swirling in the sub-zero winds.
As engrossing as the mystery surrounding William Hunter’s disappearance, what I found even more interesting was the backstory of the characters. When I finished the book, I realized a strong undercurrent throughout the book was scars- both the physical ones Bree had, and the not-so-apparent ones Bree and every Hunter brother carried. There were even glimpses of scars – gone quickly like mist – the missing Dr. Hunter may be dealing with. It was a powerful, heartbreaking thread woven throughout the pages that gave the book such added depth and emotion.
Of course, there is the trademark wit and great lines you look forward to from this author. Ellis’s observation of Bree’s demeanor in landing an out-of-fuel plane and Bree’s thoughtful response is legendary! Ms. Burrows always brilliantly balances the intensity of the plot with strokes of wit from the characters, and sometimes with a character itself. Ellis’s right-hand “man” Peanut is a character herself, bringing comfort and the color pink to his life. And let us not forget Bree’s “team” – filled with different personalities but driven by the same mission and their loyalty to her. Suspense, mystery, romance, and a dog sled team? This is one fantastic read that I cannot recommend enough – bring on the next book in this series!
What an incredible first book in a new series for Tonya Burrows! I loved it and can't wait to dig into the following stories. I'm ready to get answers to my many questions. This is a suspenseful quest to rescue Dr. William Hunter from the wilds of Alaska. He is Brielle Ives mentor and adopted foster father who suddenly disappears while on his way to visit her. Dr. Will is a former drunk who is a veterinarian who owns an animal hospital. It, and his life has gone downhill but he's been there for Bree.
Bree, an Iditarod competitor, calls his 3 estranged son's, Ellis, Nate and Damian, hoping for help because the police think he's just disappeared on another bender like he's done in the past. She knows better as he's been clean and sober for 2 years, and he sounded scared in the last phone call. Finally his oldest son Ellis flies out from LA where he's a dog trainer and lives in an RV on the beach. He thinks he'll talk her out of risking her life and her dogs. He finds himself fascinated by this scarred woman who is so loyal to his deadbeat dad and hiding from the world. It doesn't take long for him to figure out there's more to his dad's disappearance than a simple bender. He finds Bree fierce, independent, strong, brave and hard working. When it's clear someone is trying to kill her he becomes her fierce protector. The 3 sons all show up in Alaska and their caustic dynamics were entertaining. These men are all wounded from their childhood with dad. It's interesting to see how each are handling this situation and working, even unwillingly, to remedy their estranged relationships. And every scene Ellis's rescue pup Peanut, a tiny Chinese Crested, enters a scene she steals it like the princess she is. All the sled dogs have personalities and they bring color to the rich story as well.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Northern Escape is the first book in the new and exciting Northern Rescue series. This author has become one of my favorites and this book reinforced why. The plot was packed with intrigue, twists, danger, humor, family complications, and emotions. The characters were easy to relate to and the dogs were delightful. The author’s wonderful details of each dog’s characteristics and their unique personalities brought them to life. Brielle “Bree” Ives had moved to Alaska to get away from people and their hurtful comments of her scars. She loved the life she had built there and her dogs. Her mentor Dr. William “Dr. Will” Hunter was the only person who had helped her when she needed it. Now he has disappeared, and she knows he is in danger but no one will believe her. Ellis Hunter had left Alaska and his family when he turned eighteen. He never wanted to return to Alaska, but he could not let Bree endanger herself looking for his father, Dr. Will. Ellis and his brothers had given up on their father and his dissolute lifestyle. Can they uncover Dr. Wills secrets before a dangerous enemy stops them? I was captivated by the book from the beginning and was on the edge of my chair from all the intrigue. The ending was surprising, and I was glad to see the brother’s relationship improve. It was not perfect, but they were able to come together and save Bree. The book leads us into the next one which is Nate’s story, and I cannot wait for it to be available. It sounds like it will be just as wonderful and full of more intrigue. I received an ARC and am willingly leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
First in a trilogy about 3 estranged brothers who grew up in Alaska with a alcoholic absentee father.
The two biggest main characters are dogs and Alaska.. And those 2 things make this book all the more fascinating, exciting and thrilling..
Dr. William Hunter is the father of the 3 brothers. He was veterinarian and after his wife died he started going downhill emotionally and left the boys to basically raise themselves which left a lot of resentments not only against their father but with each other. Now he has gone missing and none of his son's seem to care.
Brielle Ives came to Alaska years ago running from the cruelty of people. When she meets Dr Hunter after her dog is hit he takes her under his wing and teaches her about mushing which she falls in love with and now had her own sled dogs who she loves with all her heart. When Dr Hunter goes missing she is the one call all his sons asking for their help. Two don't answer and one tells her no way.
Ellis Hunter does something he swore he would never do again, return to Alaska. But he just cant get the desperation he heard in Brielle voice out of his head.
Here is where things fascinating with a crash landing of a plane, dog sledding, escaping a killer all in the middle of frozen Alaska.
This was a edge of your seat, exciting thriller/adventure which looks to have the plot thread of what's going on with Dr Hunter through the 3 books. I'm hooked..
I have to confess, for the last month or two I've been feeling a particular book-ennui, where every one has either been sloppily written/edited or boring, and main characters have been either hideously awful or so dull or unrealistic it'd honestly be more fun watching laundry go round in the dryer.
I thought it was me, or the pandemic, or post-holiday season blues, or my new glasses giving me a headache. But it WASN'T ME! It was THEM all along!!
This was the first book I've read by this author and the first book in aaaages I could NOT get enough of. I loved all the characters. I loved the setting. I loved the dogs so much!! For the first time in months I read until late into the night/early morning, and then threw my device into my work bag so I could finish the book on my break.
The pacing was fantastic, the story was exciting, there was the right amount of tension, some great touches of humour, and the right number of characters. Not 2 main characters and a few completely undeveloped and uninteresting side characters, not 50,000 people to try and keep track of. Just right.
The writing was tight, the action was great and the dialogue was believable. None of that weird stilted speech where you're constantly thinking 'Yeah, right, NOBODY actually talks like that'. Not huge long-winded swathes of narrative.
I'm usually not a cliffhanger fan and the story arc does continue into the next book (with different main characters), but in this case BRING IT ON. I can't WAIT for the next book to come out and I'm going to spend the time before it does checking out this author's previous books.
More saga than series. Implied HEA but an open ending for the main storyline that originally brought Ellis and Bree together. Intriguing concept, romantic suspense category. Ellis Hunter is the oldest of the three brothers that are contacted by Bree when Will, their father, goes missing. Having had a rough childhood, none of the three boys are eager to return "home" to investigate his disappearance until Bree announces that she's going out there with or without them. A large portion of the book revolves around trying to survive against the odds in the Alaskan wilderness. Slow burn. The strong female lead, daresay, is stronger than the male lead. This is the first book in the trilogy and it sets up the world and cast nicely. There are peeks and hints into the next book without giving too much away. The third book, for now, seems to be a wild card. Again, while Ellis and Bree may have discovered an implied HEA, the mystery surrounding the "disappearance" of Will Hunter will continue, at least, into book 2 - if not the entire trilogy.
"Someone needs to. Someone needs to care since you and your brothers don't." They stared at each other for several long seconds..."
Bree can not believe that Ellis showed up here in Alaska. Calling him to tell him that his father was missing did not go well. He was not at all concerned and had no qualms telling her that she shouldn't waste her time looking for his dad, either. But here he is, in person, to tell her that again? Too bad. Dr. Will means more to her than anyone in her life, and she will find him. With or without anyone's help.
Ellis didn't know what he was expecting when he returned to Alaska to talk Bree out of her quest to find his dad. But she definitely wasn't what he expected. She was a determined and strong woman. He could see there was no talking her out of anything.
Together, they venture out with Bree's sled dogs and to look through the wilderness. The challenges they encounter just reinforces Ellis's opinion that Bree is amazing. But they still are not finding the answers they are looking for. And it will be a miracle if they make it out of the wild alive.
This is a great book!! The characters are strong and there is a great backstory. I can not wait to read the continuation of this story.
A great start to a new series with three estranged brothers and the one woman who brings them back to Alaska. Ellis left the cold and unforgiving Alaska terrain many years ago, leaving everything and everyone behind. His dad a drunk and his half brothers, one a withdrawn recluse and the other a reality star. When his dad goes missing there is only one person who cares enough to find him, Brielle. She’s worried about the Dr, a man who saved her and she is not going to turn her back on him when he goes missing. She tries all three brothers and Ellis is the first one to show up and after convincing him that his dad may have changed, he goes out with her with her trusty sled dogs and Brielle leading the way across the harsh Alaskan wilderness. A great read with steam, suspense, close encounters, adorable dogs and great characters. The story flowed beautifully and I loved how strong Brielle was, confident with her dogs and taking a leap with Ellis. Ellis was perfect for Brielle, seeing past her scars to see the real beauty she is....inside and out. The complicated history between the brothers adds to the bit of drama but was not over the top....loved it. Can’t wait to see what happens next. *I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*
I love a book where the hero and the heroine shine in there own right. Northern Escape has an unconventional beginning, then dives right into the adventure. Brielle Ives and Ellis Hunter race across to arctic tundra - I know the book is set in Alaska, but it might as well be Antarctica for the amount of snow and ice these characters have to deal with - to try and save Dr. William Hunter. I’m not going to dive too deeply into a synopsis because it’s in the book blurb and I don’t want to give anything away. I will say that a lot of the characters have scars, emotional and physical that they need to deal with in order to be a good team. The dogs in the story steal the show and add a bit of hilarity to a serious situation. There are a few unanswered questions in the story, so I hope they get answered as the series continues. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
I have a lifelong love/hate relationship with winter. I’ve lived in the south all of my life and my mantra is the hotter, the better, so it’s no surprise to discover thoughts of snow and ice throw me into fits of hysteria. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like to read about it. I’ve long been fascinated with the Iditarod, and last year two of my favorite books took place in frozen tundras ('Whiteout,' and 'Hard Line'). It was thrilling to realize Tonya Burrows is kicking off her new Northern Rescue series with a race through the remote Alaskan wilderness in NORTHERN ESCAPE. This opposites-attract suspense is the perfect bridge for my fascination with sled dogs and my aversion to anything called “icy wilderness.”
Ellis and Bree were great characters and Ellis was really understanding of Bree’s concerns. I found it interesting to learn more around ‘mushing’. I adore Peanut, I hope she features in more books (the other dogs sounded great too but my heart is with Peanut!) I loved the Hunter brothers and look forward to reading their stories. The only small issue I had was I felt I wanted more from Ellis and Bree. This maybe as it was the 1st book in the series so there was explaining for the background of the Hunter brothers and their future books. Hopefully we will hear more of Ellis and Bree then as well. Roll on book 2! This had a different feel to the Hornet series, less action although there was still an action feel to the book. The book felt shorter as well, I read this in a couple of sessions and really enjoyed it. Overall for me a 5 star review and I would recommend.
