Spectra #3

Whisper

Rate this book
It begins with a whisper and ends in a bloody showdown with a mad King. All in a day’s work for Spectra!

Kicking my vigilante habit is a three step process.

Step One: Get thrown into an elite esper training facility.

Step Two: Manifest dangerous, undocumented powers.

Step Three: Leave behind a blood trail that could destroy the city.

In the aftermath of my battle in Ballarat, a wonder drug hits the street and promises to level the telepathic playing field.

Second Sight grants telepathy to the lucky ones and destroys the minds of the rest. My orders are clear: Lay low. Mind my own business. Leave the investigation to the Psi-Ops.

It’s too bad that one of the lucky new espers has decided to don my secret identity, calling into question the power of the Kings. When the whispers begin reaching out to me, and all evidence points to my inexplicable connection to Second Sight, hiding is no longer an option.

To flush out this Fake Spectra, the Kings will bring Melbourne to its knees. It begins with a whisper, but unless I’m carefully, it will end up destroying everything and everyone I love.

Whisper is the third novel in the Spectra Series. It is a young adult urban fantasy novel with slight Academy overtones. There are flavours of X-men and Alphas with a big helping of snark and a slow burn romance.

Okayyy. So I'm definitely liking this series more and more as it goes on. The first book (Origin) was awful because I didn't understand how the events correlated with the story. But now that I'm three books into this series, I definitely realize that Origin was like a comic book prequel. So far I really do love this series. It for sure isn't the best that I've read but it certainly isn't the worst. Spoilers below

The love interest

Alright so usually in books I do the main character first. But literally the love interest in this book, for me, was either going to make or break the story. While reading book one, I thought for sure the whole thing was a setup for Zeke to be the love interest. Similar backgrounds, similar personalities, the whole "vital link", etc, etc. I would've hated Zeke being the main love interest but then we got Oscar. Oscar. Damn. Hoffman. I kid you not when I was reading the scene where I literally almost through my kindle across the room. I would have DESPISED Oscar as the love interest. The age gap for me was just weird and he came into the story as a older brother type of bond. And then there were times where Willow was hinted at being attracted towards him. I wanted to cry. To sob.

BUT THEN WE GOT RYAN. And I literally love Ryan. Unlike most books where the love interest introduced right away, immediately attracted to one another, then marketed as a "slow burn", Lan actually does a SLOWBURN romance here. Ryan and Willow aren't immediately all over each other. Their bond forms slowly and even now she isn't 100% on board yet. I also like how he isn't just all over Willow and worshiping the ground she walks on. Honestly I'm probably a little biased because after the way I nearly sobbed thinking Oscar was the main romance, Ryan was genuinely such a relief.
Moving on, the outcome of this book reminded me of what happened to Lex and Kai in bBloodline Academy's book two or three . But there's literally not a doubt in my mind that they'll end up together in the end and can I just say I am ALONG FOR THIS RIDE.

Willow: Main Protagonist

I was annoyed by Willow in book 1 and I don't remember why exactly. Now, though, I love her. It's such a relief that she actually makes mistakes that impact the future. If you hand me a story with a "sassy heroin" I will eat that shit up 😭.

As you can see, the highlight of this review was literally JUST my love-interest dilema. But honestly, it's a good book and the world-building is pretty solid.

This is good...

And this series is seriously growing on me, it was a bit hard to get into the first book.
The only reason I marked down the stars is the mentioning of dog racing.... It's a huge deal for me with animal protection and having seen the backside of racing ~with my 3 rescued greyhounds from the racing sffthole~ it's not hard to understand why it's forbidden in many places and considered to be an act of animal cruelty.

Sorry author, you're the best new takeachanceon I've seen in a very long time but I just couldn't not ❣️

Captivating

This story is really really good at keeping you captivated! There are no slow moments. Willow is always caught in something. It's normally a life and/or death situation.

I'm running to read the next book to see what happens between her and Ryan. I imagine there will be more run-ins with the stiffs.

It's great to see how her relationships have grown with the other Hyper members. I'm looking forward to seeing more of their interactions and how fiercely they protect Willow.

This series is so addicting that I read all 4 books in one day. I honestly could not have predicted that ending and I loved seeing Callum again. I love Willow and Ryan together, Ryan is seriously my favorite character, and continues as my no. 1 through the next book.

Another fantastic installment from Lan Chan. Loved the pace and action of this book, in my mind I could see it playing out in a Netflix adaptation. Can't wait to see what happens with the gang and of course Ryan. My new fave series!

Excellent

This story keeps you on the edge of our seat the whole time. I could not put it down. I can't wait until echo comes out to see how willow handles not being able to be close to Ryan.

awesome!

This was a great read. This and the previous books. Great storyline too. Probably should have written this for the first book but I love the fact that you can’t categorize the series in one group, it’s a mix. Reading as many ya books as I have, I get used to what’s already there. My fav book so far is the second one. And personally I would prefer if Zeke and willow were actually a couple. Best friends are the best kind of love aren’t they?

I love how the author sets these books in Australia, it's so cool to hear about and see places I've actually been to!
This book was meh unfortunately, it just seemed to drag and the pacing was really slow, for a 300 page book.
Some of the characters were annoying too (Rich in particular got on my nerves)
